THE COACHES CLEVELAND BROWNS - ROMEO CRENNELRomeo Crennel is entering his fourth season as Head Coach and was rewarded with a two-year contract ex-tension (thru 2011) on Jan. 29, 2008. Crennel led the Browns to a 10-6 record in 2007, including a franchise-best seven consecutive home wins, and witnessed six Browns selected to the Pro Bowl. Crennel’s offense developed into a highly productive unit and ranked eighth in the NFL in offense (5,621 net yards) and scor-ing (402 points). The output of net yards and scoring also ranked third best in franchise history. Crennel was

named head coach of the Cleveland Browns on Feb. 8, 2005, the 11th full-time head coach in franchise history. Crennel returned to Cleveland in 2005, after serving as the Browns defensive coordinator in 2000, and along with Phil Sav-age helped rebuild the football operations. Crennel previously led the Browns to a respectable 6-10 record in his fi rst year as a head coach and added a 4-12 mark in 2006. His resume includes 38 years of coaching experience, including 27 years in the NFL. Prior to rejoining the Browns, Crennel served as the defen-sive coordinator for New England (2001-04), helping the Patriots to three Super Bowl victories. From 1997-99, Crennel coached the defensive line on the New York Jets. He spent 12 years on the New York Giants coaching staff starting as the special teams and defensive assistant coach in 1981. Crennel began his professional coaching career in 1970 at his alma mater, Western Kentucky. He also saw stints at Texas Tech, Mississippi and Georgia Tech before entering the professional ranks.

CINCINNATI BENGALS - MARVIN LEWISLewis is in his sixth year at the helm for Cincinnati. Lewis became the ninth coach in Bengals history on January 14th, 2003. In his fi ve seasons with the team, Lewis has compiled a 42-41 regular season record and has registered just one losing season. The Bengals fi n-ished 8-8 in each of their fi rst two seasons under Lewis and in 2003 and 2004, Lewis fi nished second behind Bill Belichick of New England in Associated Press vot-ing for NFL Coach of the Year. In 2005, Cincinnati re-corded an 11-5 record, winning the AFC North division

and making the playoffs for the fi rst time in 15 years. Despite setting multiple franchise records in the regular season, the Bengals lost to the rival Pittsburgh Steelers, 31-17, in the wild card round. Lewis entered the NFL coaching ranks in 1992 with the Steelers as a linebackers coach, spending four seasons in the Steel City. From there, he joined the Baltimore Ravens staff as the defensive coordinator, spending six seasons (1996-2001) there, including a Super Bowl victory in 2000. Prior to joining the Bengals in 2002 he directed the NFL’s fi fth-ranked defense with Washington, serving as assistant head coach in addition to his coordinators role. McGinest (15th season) and Davis (7th season) will serve as defensive captains, Anderson (4th season) and Fraley (9th season) will serve as offensive captains, while Dawson (10th season) and Cribbs (4th season) as special teams captains.

Each NFL club will have team captains wear a captain patch on their uni-form. The idea came from NFL players during a meeting of Commissioner Roger Goodell’s new Player Advisory Council last season. The purpose of the program is to support and recognize the importance of team lead-ership through the role of the captains. Captains traditionally serve as a link between players, coaches and management to help foster cohesion within the teams.

2008 Browns LegendsThe Cleveland Browns have announced that Warren Lahr (1948-59), Paul Wig-gin (1957-67), Walter Johnson (1965-76) and Eric Metcalf (1989-94) are the newest members of the Cleveland Browns Legends based on the combined vot-ing of fans and 10-member panel. All four Legends will be inducted at a special ceremony at Cleveland Browns Stadium during the Browns home game vs. The New York Giants on October 13.

The Browns created the Cleveland Browns Legends in 2001 to annually honor former players who have made a major impact on the organization. Players must have been on the Browns’ active roster for a minimum of fi ve seasons. The Cleveland Browns Legends were determined by fan balloting on the Browns’ website – www.clevelandbrowns.com - (weighted 20%) along with voting by a 10-member Legends Panel (weighted 80%). Each of the Browns alumni in the Pro Football Hall of Fame were automatically inducted into the Cleveland Browns Legends.

Warren Lahr – DB– 5’11 – 189 lbs – Years with Browns: 1948-59A staple in the defensive backfi eld for the Browns for 12 seasons, Warren Lahr fi nished his storied career with 40 interceptions, landing him second on the all-time franchise list. In 1950, Lahr had his most prolifi c season as a cornerback, intercepting a career-best eight passes and ran back two picks for touchdowns. The Pennsylvania native followed his stellar 1950 season by returning two more interceptions for touchdowns in 1951 and started a streak of fi ve seasons (1951-1955) where he recorded fi ve interceptions. A graduate of Western Reserve, Lahr ended his career with 530 interception return yards and fi ve defensive touchdowns and cemented his place in Browns history. Lahr passed away on Jan. 19, 1969.

Paul Wiggin – DE – 6’3 – 242 lbs – Years with Browns: 1957-67Wiggin aided with the progression of the defensive end position as one of the most dominant players of his era on the end of the defensive line. A sixth-round pick in the 1957 NFL draft out of Stanford University, Wiggin was a two-time fi rst-team All-America selection and was inducted into the college football Hall of Fame in 2005. The durable Wiggin was the picture of endurance, playing in every game for 11 seasons in Cleveland. Despite playing his entire career at defensive end, Wiggin recorded three career interceptions and returned his lone interception in 1960, 20 yards for a touchdown. Born in Modesto, Calif., Wiggin returned to his alma mater and coached for three years after a three-year stint as a coach with the Kansas City Chiefs.

Walter Johnson – DT – 6’4 – 275 lbs – Years with Browns: 1965-76Nicknamed “Zoom” for his notorious quickness off the ball, Johnson was taken by the Browns in the second round of 1965 NFL draft and went on to play every game of all of his 13 seasons in the league. Johnson teamed with DT Jerry Sherk to create one of the most dominant defensive tackle tandems of their time. During his career, Johnson fronted a Browns defense that notched twenty or more forced fumbles in every season he was on the team. Even as an interior defensive lineman, Johnson corralled two interceptions during his storied career and even broke off a 24-yard kickoff return playing special teams in 1972. Born in Cincinnati, Ohio, Johnson attended Los Angeles State University and ended his NFL career having played in 182 games. Johnson passed away on June 30, 1999.

Eric Metcalf – RB/KR – 5’10 – 188 lbs – Years with Browns: 1989-94An explosive player at the University of Texas, Metcalf was selected by the Browns with the 13th overall pick in the 1989 NFL draft and made an immediate impact. In his rookie season, Metcalf rushed for 633 yards and six touchdowns while also reeling in 54 receptions for 397 yards and four scores. As a kick returner, Metcalf was regarded as one of the most dangerous players with the ball as shown by his 1,052 return yards in his second season, including two touchdowns one of which came via a 101-yard kickoff return. As his versatility increased throughout his career, Metcalf earned back-to-back Pro Bowl selections in 1994 and 1995 before he was traded to the Atlanta Falcons. With 43 career touchdowns from scrimmage and 12 more from kickoffs, the Seattle, Wash., native remains one of the biggest playmakers in the history of the Browns organization.

Tuck-er spent the last three seasons as the Browns defensive backs coach under head coach Romeo Crennel. Tucker, a Cleveland native, inherited a young second-ary in 2007 as the Browns ranked 24th in the league, allowing 230.1 yards passing per game. Tucker was re-sponsible for the development of two young safeties in the secondary and tutoring youth at the corner position as well. Tucker assisted in the development of two rookie

draft choices who made an immediate impact in the Browns secondary. Second-round selection Eric Wright started 13 games at left corner and tied for second on the team with 11 passes defended, while fi fth-round pick Brandon McDonald became a force in the second half of the season as the nickel defensive back and tied Wright for second on the club with 11 passes defended. Tucker previously served as defensive backs coach and co-defensive coor-dinator for Ohio State University for four seasons (2001-04) and the defensive backs coach at Louisiana State University for the 2000 season. Tucker began coaching as a graduate assistant at Michigan State in 1997 and 1998 before taking the defensive backs coach position at Miami (Ohio) University in 1999.

Cory Undlin - Defensive Backs CoachThe Cleveland Browns named Cory Undlin as defensive backs coach. Undlin received a one-year contract ex-tension and is signed through the 2009 season. Undlin spent the last three seasons as the Browns secondary coach/assistant special teams coach under head coach Romeo Crennel. Undlin came to Cleveland from the New England Patriots, where he spent the 2004 season as the defen-sive assistant helping with the defensive backs. Undlin was part of a Patriots team that won back-to-back Su-per Bowl championships and also won an NFL record 21 straight games.

Before joining New England, Undlin spent two seasons assisting with the defensive backs as a graduate assistant at Fresno State University (2002-03). During those two seasons, Fresno State won back-to-back Silicon Valley Bowls by defeating Georgia Tech and UCLA, respectively. Prior to Fresno State, Undlin spent four years at Cal Lutheran University as a linebackers/defensive coordinator (1998-2002). Undlin played defensive back at Cal Lutheran from 1990–94, and received a Master’s degree from CLU in 2003.

New D-Lineman Set an Early ToneOn Sunday, Sept. 14, against the Steelers, DE Corey Williams posted a career-high nine tackles, including six solo and three assisted tackles, for the fi fth-year pro. Williams led the team in tackles and also shared a sack with S Nick So-rensen on a nine-yard sack of Steelers QB Ben Roethlisberger. Since Romeo Crennel brought the 3-4 defensive scheme to the Browns in 2005, Williams’ performance marked only the fi fth time since 2005 that a defensive lineman has either led the club or tied for the lead in tackles in a game.

Prime TimeThe Browns have fi ve nationally televised regular season games during the 2008 campaign, including three Monday Night (ESPN) contests, one Sunday Night (NBC) game and one Thursday Night (NFL Network) contest. Previously, the most national primetime games that featured the Browns in a single-season was three during both the 1988 and 1989 seasons.

Hosting the Last Three Super Bowl ChampsThe Browns will host the defending Super Bowl Champion New York Giants on Monday Night Football on Oct. 13 at 8:30 p.m. Cleveland will play the last three defending Super Bowl Champions at Cleveland Browns Stadium--N.Y. Giants (NFC Wild Card), Washington (NFC Wild Card), Jacksonville (AFC Wild Card) and Tennessee (AFC Wild Card) also earned postseason berths.

Big day against the BengalsDespite his record setting rushing performance with the Baltimore Ravens against the Browns earlier in his career, RB Jamal Lewis has more 100-yard rushing performances and rushing TDs against the Bengals than any other team in the NFL. During his seven years with the Ravens and after one season with the Browns, Lewis has played in 13 games against Cincinnati and totaled 1,551 yards rushing on 284 carries (5.5 avg.) and 10 rushing TDs. In those 13 contests, Lewis rushed for nine 100-yard games, including seven consecutive games from 2000-04.

During his career against the Browns, Lewis set the NFL record (at the time) with 295 yards rushing on Sept. 14, 2003. In his 12 career games against the Browns, Lewis rushed for 1,524 yards on 271 carries (5.6 avg.) and 8 rushing TDs. Lewis had six 100-yard rushing performances in his 12 games against Cleveland.

EDWARDS’ 2008 GAME-BY-GAME STATISTICS

DYNAMIC DUOBrowns WR Braylon Edwards and TE Kellen Winslow became the fi rst duo in Browns history to each record 1,000 yards receiving in the same season. “The opposing defense has to pick their poison, double either myself or Braylon,” said Winslow. “Braylon is good to have as a catalyst on this offense because he is getting open and beating his man. Opposing defenses have to account for both of us on the fi eld and then it creates opportunities for other players.”Edwards became the sixth receiver in Browns history to eclipse the 1,000-yard mark in a single season, setting the franchise record for most receiving yards in a single season. Winslow joined Edwards as the seventh Browns receiver to eclipse the 1,000-yard mark in a season.BROWNS 1,000-YARD RECEIVERS IN A SINGLE SEASON

Romeo Crennel Press Conference Transcript 9-22-08(Opening statement)- “I think that everybody understands now that last year is offi cially over and where we are is where we are. I think that we have to evaluate this year’s team for who we are, how we’re playing right now and what’s happened this year and not look at what happened last year or anticipate that it’s going to be okay because it’s not okay. We’re going to evaluate the team and try to fi gure out what we need to do to get the team better so that we have a chance to play better and have a chance to win some games. That’s what we started looking at today and will continue to look at as we prepare for the game on Sunday to try to get through that one. As I told you yesterday, it was a game of two halves. The fi rst half we played decent and we had a lead going into halftime and then we come out and the same team did not come out. We made too many mistakes, we put ourselves in a hole, we were on the road, crowd noise impacted us a little bit but if you’re a good team you can work through some of that and we didn’t work through it at all. Before we know it, we go from a 10-7 game to a 10-21 game and that puts us under the gun. It was tough trying to come back and probably affected some of the play calling to try to get the scores back. This is where we are and I think that the thing we have to do is evaluate what we’ve done so far and who can give us the best chance to win, who can go out and play. That’s what we’re going to try to get done the next couple of days here and then we’re going to try to go forward.”

(On injuries)- “From the injury standpoint, Shantee Orr, he took a hit in the head but it was just mild. We took him inside, he was okay, they brought him back to the sideline and he should be okay. Derek (Anderson) has a bruise on his forearm, he had a wrap on it I believe. Those were the other things that came out of the game.”

(On getting Derek Anderson’s confi dence back)- “That’s one of the things I think that maybe several things have to happen. I think the pressure affected him a little bit yesterday so we have to protect better, we have to be better route runners and catch better and then he has to throw better. I think all of those things impacted the results yesterday, particularly in the second half.”

(On evaluating the quarterback position)- “I think we have to look at all the positions. I think that we’ll defi nitely try to get the other guy ready and get him ready to go and then we’ll see how it progresses from there.”

(On the possibility of a change at the quarterback position)- “When you talk about shaking things up, I think what we have to do is we have to evaluate it and do what we think is best for this team to try to win a game. If that’s what it is then that’s what it needs to be, if we decide that. If we decide that that’s not what it is then we have to fi gure out what we can do to help the position more. We’re going to evaluate it and we’re going to look and then we’re going to make a decision and then we’re going to go with it. Now, where that is, what percentage, I can’t put a percentage on it or anything like that.”

(On play calling in the second half)- “When you get down 21-10 against a good football team in an adverse situation like that, you kind of feel like you need to get some points back and the quickest way to try to get yardage is to throw the ball. We had a good mix in the fi rst half of runs and passes and we got away from that in the second half and I think the score of the game had more to do with it than anything else.”

(On Jamal Lewis)- “I thought that Jamal ran the ball well. When you look at his totals from the game, I think he had a 4.7 average and that’s pretty good for a running back and that’s pretty good for a running back. When you look at that, you would say that he probably should have carried the ball more. Then, like I said, we come out in the second half and before we know it, it’s 21-10 instead of 10-7. If it’s 10-7, he probably gets more carries but now when it becomes 21-10 then you’re behind in the game, you feel like you need to catch up a little bit and so that changes the play calling a little.”

(On Jamal Lewis’ comments about not getting enough carries)- “Jamal, he played in Balti-more before he got here and so he was ready to play this game and he wanted to go down there and show that he was still the running back that they got rid of and he was a good run-ning back. So he wanted the ball more and I can understand his frustration about not being able to have the ball more, in that game particularly.”

(On Derek Anderson’s struggles)- “As I just mentioned it’s a combination of things. When the defense can pin their ears back and come after the quarterback like they were able to do in the second half because of the score, and sometimes because of the yardage, it’s tough for the quarterback because the pocket gets collapsed on him. Then, he has to do try to deliver the ball downfi eld depending on the coverage and if its man coverage and you can’t get anybody free then you have nowhere to go with the ball. Now the pressure gets to you so you have to move off, your timing is off and now you still have to throw and deliver the ball. All of those things play into it, that’s why I said if you can have a good mix in your play call-ing, you can help the quarterback a lot more so that they’re not able to pin their ears back. When you get to third and 15, there’s not much mix that you can have there. You have to try to get 15 yards to get the fi rst down so you need to call a play that can give you a chance to get 15 yards and generally you drop back to throw the ball and your opponent knows that and if they’re a good rushing team like the Ravens are, they pin those ears back and they make it tough on everybody.”

(On the challenges the coaches face with an 0-3 team)- “I think the biggest challenge, as I just mentioned also, is that we as coaches have to determine which players are playing good and which players give us the best chance to win. Then we’ve got to get those guys out there on the fi eld. Then, if we have players who have some defi ciencies on the team,

and there are players who have some defi ciencies because everybody can’t be All-Pro, everybody’s not a superstar, then we have to try to protect those guys that may be limited for whatever reason. Maybe a guys is limited because of an injury or whatever, we have to try to protect that guy and not put him in situations that will get us beat.”

(On Braylon Edwards)- “We coach Braylon up, we talk to him, we council him, we point out to him the correct way to block, the correct angle to take and that you’re not supposed to block in the back. The thing that we try to emphasize is on penalties, they hurt your team and they cause you to lose. We talk about it but evidently we don’t talk about it enough. You can get to the point where you can put the guy on the bench if he continually does that, so that’s what you can do about it.”

(On the option of bringing Brady Quinn in the game late against the Ravens)- “As the situa-tion went along it was 10-21 and then it got to be 10-28. We felt like if we could get a score then it’s back to a 10-point game and felt like that DA, because he had all the practice reps during the week basically, probably gave us the best chance. So I decided to leave him in the game.”

(On what Derek Anderson needs to do to improve)- “Last year he got every rep in practice, he played every preseason game. This year, he hasn’t been able to do that. Last year he had all the receivers working with him and this year he doesn’t have all the receivers work-ing with him and a key guy that he had last year is not even practicing at all this year. I think all of that goes into it. The offensive line, they don’t have quite as many people as they did last year and the fact that Ryan Tucker was a starter last year and he’s not a starter now because of an injury. We have to work through it and that the challenge of coaching in this league, trying to work through adversity and trying to get your team to play more consistent than we’re playing now.”

(On the rest of the season)- “I talked to the players just like I mentioned to you already. What we have to do is we have to focus in on getting the guys on the fi eld that give us the best chance to win, guys that will concentrate and focus and play to the best of their ability. Then we have to try to adapt and adjust if a guy is limited for whatever reason to try to limit the tough situations that he’s put in. If we can get that done and be a consistent football team, then that will improve our chances of winning.”

(On Eric Steinbach)- “He is recovering. He is working and we have not ruled him out for this week. We will see how his strength is, if his strength is okay then he will play.”

(On what changes need to be made)- “One of the things we do is look outside and we have got some guys coming in to work out today. I don’t know if they are the answer because if they are the answer then they wouldn’t be on the street. We are going to look at those guys and see what they look like and try to go forward and see what we can do to improve the team.”

(On Quinn starting vs. Cincinnati)- “That determination hasn’t been made yet so I am not going to sit here and say that. I have told Quinn all along that he is one play away and that’s the way he has to approach it. He prepares himself every week like he is the starter and like he is going to get playing time. The number of reps he gets in practice is not up to him, it’s up to us as coaches. I know that he will do everything he can to be ready and when he gets called on I think he will go in there and perform to the best of his ability. We will have to see how good that is.”

(On Quinn being considered a rookie)- “I think the year to prepare and get versed in the system helps him defi antly. It’s not like being a total rookie but you still haven’t had the game reps. The game reps are the thing that get you experience basically.”

(On Jerome Harrison)- “We had him in the game same. We weren’t able to get the ball to him or call his number. You have to try to see how you can disseminate the ball and who dis-seminate it to. Jamal is the starting running back so when he is not in there you put Harrison in and he is kind of more of a role player right now. On the screen pass he played his role very well on that particular one. The other times he was in there the ball didn’t get to him in the role that he had to play. Here again, as coaches we are going to have to look to see if Harrison in the game and getting him the ball will help us.”

(On the defense)- “The fi rst half I thought they did okay. We got some turnovers which was good. In the second half after the score got to be what it was, I don’t think we did as well overall. I thought they kept playing a little bit but we never got them into that third-and-long situation. I think there might have been one of two series in the second half where we got to a third down and got them off the fi eld. They loaded up that offensive line and hammered the ball.”

(On the most frustrating part of the season)- “Our inconsistency and not being able to ex-ecute the way we need to execute to win. We come out in the second half we got the kickoff and we got a penalty on the kickoff. Then we are backed up and we get penalties to back us up further then you are in a hole and have to try to get out of the hole and you throw and interception. It kind of snow balls a little bit so that is the most disappointing thing. Being as disciplined as we need to be for this team because everybody - players coaches - felt like this team was going to be a good team from what we did last year and we were kind of living off that I believe. Now I wanted to make the point that last year is offi cially over. It’s over so we are not living on last year. What we did last year will not impact us this year. We need to do a whole hell of a lot better this year.”
