2008 Newsletter Volume 2

Dear Students and Parents, In UK, there is an ongoing movement that focuses on assessment for learning driven by a research study conducted by Black and Wiliams. I would like to share 2 of the quotations from them:

“The ways in which assessment can affect the motivation and self-esteem of pupils and the benefits of engaging students in self-assessment both deserve careful attention.” (Black and Wiliam, 1998) “Marking is usually conscientious but often fails to offer guidance on how work can be improved.” (Black and Wiliam, 1998)

It was timely to reflect on what else we could have done to better manage and improve the confidence of learners in SmartLab. We had focus on developing and implementing our curriculum in the 3 stages: Exploration, Strengthening and Consolidation since inception, and found them beneficial in gearing and conditioning students to improve their assessment scores. The step-by-step programme planning focus on developing confidence of learners and cultivating their interests in learning.

In 2008, our teachers would be spending more time to analyse the assessments of learners to help learners develop competence in application of knowledge and resilience in managing challenges. The after assessment analysis would provide students, teachers and parents a better understanding on what went wrong or right during the assessment, and examine ways that can be adopted to better improve the learning outcome. Both the process and outcome of learning should be celebrated equally. A series of talks on “Believe in Yourself” would be conducted by myself to engage students and parents on our approach. I look forward to meeting all of you. Tony Founder

In 2007, SmartLab conducted its first Teen Towkay programme aimed at helping students understand the basics and foundations of developing a successful business, and developing and implementing business ideas. The modules would provide platforms for development of creative ideas, conducting research to develop ideas and experimentation to implement new ideas. The programme consists of 2 parts: an initial 2-day full time programme to expose them to the basics and foundations of developing a successful business, followed by a 3-day presentation and brainstorming session to develop a business plan. Using Problem-based and Practice-based learning approaches, the entrepreneurship programme is conducted through (1) real-life scenario-based discussion (2) business strategy games (3) starting and operating a functional company selling services or products or providing consultancies. The programme is structured in accordance to the Business Start-up module in Cambridge International Diploma in Business, where students will be exposed to modules on business organisation and environment, effective business communication, marketing, business finance and human resource management.

Part 1 The first part of the TeenTowkay programme fully exposed its participants to the importance of leadership and how effective team management and communications can get people to work together. TEAM = Together Everyone Achieves More. Through the lectures conducted on the first day of the programme, the participants were introduced various leadership styles, and the basics of teamwork and effective project management.

Speeches were required to be made by would-be team leaders, where an election was conducted to select the team leaders. The participants were then separated into small groups when they were required to work as a team to brainstorm on their mission: to sell handmade gifts and items from SPCA and SPD.

The leader and their members were given a taste of the need to manage uncertainties by conducting online bidding for their stall locations and the selling rights of a long list of products provided by the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) and the Society for the Physically Disabled (SPD). Unexpected outcomes from the bidding results allow trainers to observe and comment on how the leader reacted and rallied the team to move forward. Project management skills are utilized when the members plan and organize for the selling of the products. In conjunction with the Christmas fair organized by the Civil Service Club, the participants of the TeenTowkay programme set up their stalls and started operations to work together as a team in accordance to the project management plan. With the generosity and support of the visitors at the fair, all the groups did exceedingly well and helped to raise funds on behalf of SPCA and SPD.

Part 2

The second part of the TeenTowkay programme focused more on the development of the participants’ business idea, and how an idea can be developed to become a business plan. Participants learned that detailed market research and good teamwork were required to support the planning and development of their business ideas. The participants were required to conduct discussions, presentations and online research. They were also taught about the process involved in setting up a local company in Singapore, and the fundamentals of a business plan.

The participants were also introduced to the financial management of a business and how to construct profit and cashflow forecast during the development of their business plan. The programme ended with the participants pitching their business plans and making a presentation to a group of trainers, including NYP business lecturer, Mr Ong acting as mock investors.

Title of Talk: Believe in Yourself

“Pupils who encounter difficulties and poor results are led to believe that they lack ability, and this belief leads them to attribute their difficulties to a defect in themselves about which they cannot do a great deal. So they “retire hurt”, avoid investing effort in learning which could only lead to disappointment and try to build up their self-esteem in other ways.” Page 9, Inside the black Box, raising standards through classroom assessment by Paul Black & Dylan William, Department of Education & Professional Studies, King’s College London. The talk focuses on the importance of developing the confidence of students as part of their education. A brief outline of the areas being covered during the talk includes the following:

• Assessment for Learning or Learning for Assessment? • Effective Curriculum Development and Implementation • Can learner-profiling make a difference? • Student profiling to be done for participants.
