2008 Interoperability Special Report and Vendor’s Directory ConnectPress is proud to present the 2008 Interoper- ability Special Report and Vendor’s Directory. Recently, in Colorado, ConnectPress and David Prawel of Longview Advisors sponsored the annual 3D Collaboration and Interoperability Conference. According to Prawel, globalization, higher product complexity, more demanding customers, and brutal competition are all driving the need for more effective collaboration. Poor CAD interoperability remains the single largest sources of waste in product development. Two main sources of waste in engineering are: time spent fixing CAD data caused by poor interoperability between CAD systems or versions; and time spent fig- uring out CAD data created by someone else, resulting from poor CAD process standardization. Prawel’s assessment of trends include, progress in the quest for fully-functional interoperability. Read about STEP AP203 E2 in an article included in this roundup by Prawel. Another important trend is the increasing demand for fully-featured product models. Huge investments are being made in capturing prod- uct knowledge in digital product models; executives are realizing the huge value “trapped” in this data. However, product knowledge must be safe and secure, and significant progress has been made in this area, according to Prawel. Additional trends include the emergence (or re-emer- gence) of direct geometry editing and secure access and use of 3D data by vastly more people in the ex- tended global organization. Many new developments are pushing interoperability solutions into new frontiers, while significant improve- ments in tools and solutions that are already known and trusted are reducing the negative impact poor interoperability is having in the business of manufac- turing, every day. ConnectPress is proud to present the 2008 Interoper-ability Special Report and Vendor’s Directory. Here you will find a collection of informative articles, brought to you by the ConnectPress editorial staff and sponsored by TransMagic, ITI TranscenData, Quad-rispace, Core Technologies, Lattice Technologies (Lattice 3D), Datakit, Anark and Theorem Solutions.

Two main sources of waste in engineering are: time spent fixing CAD data caused by poor interoperability between CAD systems or versions; and time spent fig-uring out CAD data created by someone else, resulting from poor CAD process standardization.

Prawel’s assessment of trends include, progress in the quest for fully-functional interoperability. Read about STEP AP203 E2 in an article included in this roundup by Prawel. Another important trend is the increasing demand for fully-featured product models. Huge investments are being made in capturing prod-uct knowledge in digital product models; executives

are realizing the huge value “trapped” in this data. However, product knowledge must be safe and secure, and significant progress has been made in this area, according to Prawel.

Additional trends include the emergence (or re-emer-gence) of direct geometry editing and secure access and use of 3D data by vastly more people in the ex-tended global organization.

Many new developments are pushing interoperability solutions into new frontiers, while significant improve-ments in tools and solutions that are already known and trusted are reducing the negative impact poor interoperability is having in the business of manufac-turing, every day.

Eliminating Barriers of Interoperability in Distrib-uted Global Multi-CAD/CAM Environments - By Ken Feitz, Marketing Manager, TransMagic, Inc. Glo-balization in the manufacturing industry is increasing the need for 3D interoperability and collaboration. Design engineers and manufacturing professionals continue to wrestle with the monster of data exchange between computer-aided design (CAD) and com-puter-aided manufacturing (CAM) while trying to increase productivity and create a competitive edge.

is excited to participate in the yearly update Con-nectPress provides on translation technologies. Tradi-tionally, this report had been “translation” centric and focused on converting data between different CAD formats. While ITI continues to develop translation technologies, we are pleased with this year’s broader theme of “interoperability”. Since 2008 coincides with ITI’s 25th anniversary, we wanted to provide an over-view on how we got here. This is not simply a nostalgic trip down memory lane. All that ITI has accomplished has been through close relationships with OEM customers, PLM vendors and industry consortiums to create technical products and solutions that extend beyond simply data translation.

Product Documentation that is Easy, Affordable and Complete - Submitted By QuadriSpace Corpo-ration. Today’s companies have a huge investment in 3D product designs. Using 3D CAD models and data directly to create product documents greatly reduces product time-to-market and lifecycle costs. Product documentation software provides these capabilities. To be effective, product documentation software should be easy, affordable, and offer a complete end-to-end solution. Unfortunately most of today’s applications are expensive, unnecessarily complicated and still re-quire multiple programs to publish final documents.

Bridging the Gap Between CAD and CAE - By David A. Selliman, Vice President and James Ackron, Senior Applications Engineer. Communication in 3D is the driving force of 3D_Evolution’s© FEM mod-ules, developed by Core Technologies. These modules empower companies to bridge the communication gap between CAD and Computer Aided Engineer-ing (CAE) departments across the globe. Now 3D models can be provided to the CAE department with a click of a button. This article will provide insight to the following modules of 3D_Evolution: de-featuring, geometry simplification, meta-face and mid-face cre-ation of the models. Core Technologies’ development team has even gone one-step further to allow its users of 3D_Evolution the ability to modify the B-Rep data

with its ‘direct modeling’ module on any CAD model without the use of the CAD system.

How Using Ultra-lightweight 3D data Effectively Improves Design and Manufacturing in a Digi-tal Prototyping Process - By Bill Barnes, General Manager, Lattice Technology. The lightweight format, XVL, by Lattice Technology, enables very rapid design review of massive assemblies, and the applications delivered by Lattice deliver robust tools for identifying specific parts in 3D from a Bill of materials, check-ing tolerances and interferences, and ensuring that 3D CAD and its related product information can be de-livered and viewed in almost any standard format. The use of lightweight 3D data and Lattice applications means that recipients do not need high-end hardware and additional CAD seats to be able to do their jobs quickly and easily. And these functions fit perfectly into a Digital Prototyping workflow by allowing ac-cess, usability of 3D CAD data, without the need for expensive software and hardware tools.

Evaluating Interoperability - By John Myers, Con-nectPress Staff. Nathan Hartman of Purdue University discusses how he and a team of researchers went about evaluating the leading lightweight formats.

2008 3D and Interoperability Conference - By John Myers, ConnectPress Staff Writer. We present a sum-mary of some of the events that took place at the 2008 3D and Interoperability Conference.
