� Library Foundation of Hennepin County

The Library Foundation of Hennepin County—now united with The Friends of the Minneapolis Public Library—is a non-profit organization dedicated to supporting all 41 public libraries in the County through community building and fundraising.

Dear Friends,

For local library lovers, 2008 will be remembered as a historic year. The year began with the official merger of the suburban Hennepin County Library system and the Minneapolis Public Library. The new system – the Hennepin County Library – consists of 41 facilities, more than 5 million books and other materials, and directly serves about one quarter of Minnesota’s residents. It is a terrific, diverse library system, recognized as one of the best in the country. We are extremely proud to support this invaluable community resource.

The year ended with another merger – of the Library Foundation of Hennepin County and The Friends of the Minneapolis Public Library. Our two library support organizations officially united on December 1, 2008. We present this combined annual report to reflect the energetic and important work these two organizations have done, and now continue to do together, to help support and sustain the Hennepin County Library.

We are proud of the accomplishments of our now united organization. With your help, we have provided millions of dollars in assistance to our public libraries in recent years. As you will see in this report, these funds have supported essential programs and services at our library, such as homework centers, services for new immigrants and seniors, reading programs for boys and teens, the purchase of thousands of new books and materials, and so much more. We believe you will be pleased and amazed at the scope and impact of our work as you read this report.

Our work in support of the library wouldn’t be possible without the help of numerous individuals and organizations. We offer thanks and recognition to our current and former board and committee members for their diligence in bringing together our two organizations and their ongoing commitment to the library. Thank you as well to all of our current and former staff, and especially our new Executive Director, Stu Wilson, and the former Director of the Library Foundation, Jane Johnson, and Interim Director of the Minneapolis Friends, Anita S. Duckor. Additionally, we’d like to thank the County Commissioners and Library Board members, and our new and former Library Directors, Lois Langer Thompson and Amy Ryan, and the entire library staff for making the Hennepin County Library a revered, dynamic, and valuable institution.

We especially thank you – our donors, supporters, members and sponsors – for your generosity. We are fortunate to count major corporations and foundations, local library Friends groups, avid Pen Pals attendees, community businesses and organizations, bookstore shoppers, and more than 5,000 incredible individual contributors in our family of Foundation supporters. Celebrating 85 Years of Supporting Libraries


The Library Foundation of Hennepin County and The Friends of the Minneapolis Public Library merged on December 1, 2008, creating a unified, dynamic library support organization for all of Hennepin County.

On January 1, 2008, the Minneapolis Public Library and the Hennepin County Library systems consolidated into a single, county-wide library system – one of the largest in the country. The consolidation was truly a reunification. Minneapolis Public Library Director Gratia Countryman founded the Hennepin County Library in 1922. It operated as a department of the Minneapolis Public Library for decades. The Hennepin County Library became independent in the 1960s, but the two systems always maintained complementary strengths and often operated in tandem. With forty-one libraries, nationally acclaimed programming, a collection of 5 million

items, and substantial online resources, the Hennepin County Library now directly serves nearly one-quarter of all Minnesotans. Following the consolidation of the two library systems, the Library Foundation of Hennepin County and The Friends of the Minneapolis Public Library merged on December 1, 2008, creating a unified, dynamic library support organization for all of Hennepin County. The merger brought together two renowned organizations with 5,000 supporters and 85 years of experience in supporting libraries. Library use is skyrocketing and the Library Foundation of Hennepin County is now positioned to support and serve our library as a place of learning, culture, community, and fun.

Seeing the need for a permanent library support organization, The Friends of the Minneapolis Public Library was founded in 1948 to “promote a better understanding of the Minneapolis Public Library, its resources, and its possibilities with adequate financial support.” The organization’s first major public event — the Library’s 60th anniversary celebration — was attended by about 5,000 people. From 1950 through the 1970s, the Minneapolis Friends continued to grow as an organization — hosting regular author events, supporting free programs, operating a used book store, establishing offices with professional staff, and helping the library purchase thousands of new books and other collections items.

In suburban Hennepin County, Friends groups began forming at local libraries in the 1960s. These volunteer organizations have a proud record of library support and continue to raise much-needed funds for their community libraries. In 1986, at the request of the Library Board and County Commissioners, a new Library Foundation of Hennepin County was developed “to provide for programs and services beyond the public resources available.” The Foundation board and staff achieved that goal by successfully raising funds for library

programs, services and collections, and by working collaboratively with the 26 community Friends groups.

Over the years, the Minneapolis Friends and the Library Foundation of Hennepin County have met many challenges at the request of their libraries. Particularly over the last decade, the collaborative efforts of the organizations have greatly improved and enhanced library services in our community, thereby enriching the lives of thousands of individuals and families. The Library Foundation of Hennepin County has conducted many successful collections and programming campaigns to support such innovative programs as Guys Read and library services at corrections facilities. The Foundation also launched the popular, award-winning Pen Pals author lecture series to promote and raise additional funds for the library. Meanwhile, The Fr iends of the Minneapolis Public Library developed a strong and committed membership base, expanded literary and cultural programming, and advocated for strong public support of the library. The Minneapolis Friends led a successful referendum campaign to raise $140 million for library capital improvements and completed a $16.5 million capital campaign for the new Central Library. Today, the complementary strengths of our united organizations foretell an even brighter future for our outstanding library.

The Foundation Board appointed Stu Wilson as the new executive director in October 2008. Wilson brings a new perspective and vast exper t ise to the Foundation. For the past 12 years, Wilson worked for The Friends of the Saint Paul Public Library, where he managed individual giving, programming, public relations, strategic planning, and the Minnesota Book Awards. With new

leadership, combined resources, reduced administrative costs, and increased visibility, the Foundation is now an even more effective and efficient organization. Governed by a 32-member board of directors, the merged organization will help ensure that our public libraries are thriving community centers of intellectual discovery and lifelong learning.

Nearly 16.8 million items were checked out in 2008 — more than at any other time in the Hennepin County Library’s 124 year history.


Working Together to Support �� Libraries

In 2008, the Foundation provided more than $1.5 million in funding support for cultural programs, library-initiatives, collections, technology, and public awareness activities. Here is a selection of some of the program areas the Foundation is honored to support.

Collections. The Foundation, together with the community library Friends groups, granted just over $140,000 to support the purchase of new books, CDs, and DVDs to be shared throughout the 41 libraries in Hennepin County. This infusion of private funding was much needed, since public funds for collections have declined in recent years. Special thanks to the following Friends groups for raising over $42,000 for the Children’s Collections Initiative: Augsburg Park, Brooklyn Park, Champlin, Eden Prairie, Edina, Excelsior, Golden Valley, Hopkins, Minnetonka, Osseo, Penn Lake, Plymouth, Rockford Road, Rogers, Southdale, St. Bonifacius, Maple Grove, and Wayzata.

Homework Hub. With the 2008 merger of the library systems, the Minneapol is Homework Helper program consolidated with the similarly focused suburban TTYL@HCL. Now called Homework Hub, the program of fers tutor ing for k indergar ten through grade 12 students, as well as innovative out-of-school programs. In a comprehensive evaluation conducted by the Universit y of Minnesota’s School of Social Work, 75% of survey par t icipants self-repor t improved confidence at school, 80% reported

improved grades in the subjects for which they sought assistance, and 98% indicated that they would like to come to Homework Hub more often. Support for Homework Hub was provided by G & K Services, Nash Foundation, Piper Jaffray, Phyllis S. Poehler/ Walter E. Stremel Charitable Trust, Qwest, RBC Wealth Management, The James R. Thorpe Foundation, Wal-Mart, and Xcel Energy.

Youth Development. A generous grant from The McKnight Foundation of $70,000 over two years enabled the library to develop a year-round youth development program at the North Regional Library. Located on the boundaries of the Hawthorne and Jordan neighborhoods, North Regional Library has always been a gathering place and safe refuge for neighborhood youth. Dedicated staff deliver over 20 hours per week of programming for youth ages 10 to 15 including a youth advisory team, daily teen technology lab, open gaming studio and chess tournaments.

Game Design Studio. Design Studios motivate teen gamers to develop literacy in language and technology skills; use critical and strategic thinking; develop problem solving and execution skills – all of which are crucial for success in the 21st century workforce. Suppor t from Best Buy has allowed library staff, in partnership with the Science Museum of Minnesota, to conduct a rigorous evaluation of the kinds

of learning that occurs when teens participate in a Game Design Studio workshop. This assessment will guide the development of future technology programs for youth.

Guys Read Book Clubs. This signature program was launched by the Hennepin County system in 2003 and saw a major expansion of its reach to seven Minneapolis libraries in 2008. During the summer months, over 40 Guys Read book clubs were offered, targeted at boys grades 4 to 6. Additional clubs were added to accommodate the overwhelming demand for the program. Many libraries also offer Guys Read book clubs year-round. The Foundation is pleased to offer support for club facilitators, books, materials, and promotions made possible with generous grants from Best Buy Children’s Foundation, Highland Bank, and the Ann and Jack Cole Children’s Fund.

Corrections Outreach Programs. Through unique collaborations with Hennepin Count y Cor rec t ions, the library presents a var iety of programs including int roducing incarcerated adults to children’s literature and recording stories for their own children; literacy and writing programs that engage Youth Home School residents; and Libraries Plus You, an early intervention program to reduce truancy and connect students to library resources. The Foundation thanks Target for their support of these programs.

Immigrant Resource Programs. The Foundation raised funds for essential multicultural programs such as the Franklin Learning Center, an adult literacy center at the Franklin Library; Library Links!, programs and resources for new immigrants; and a celebration of literacy for children of all backgrounds called El dia de los ninos/El dia de los library (Children’s Day/Book Day). These are just a few of the services and programs designed to connect new immigrants to the vast resources available to them at the library. Funding for immigrant resources is made possible in part by the generous support of Comcast, Fredrikson & Byron, Elizabeth C. Quinlan Foundation, and Thrivent Financial for Lutherans.

Pen Pals. The Pen Pals author lecture series features highly acclaimed authors of national and international stature. Each author presents a unique lecture prepared specifically for our audiences and often includes key literary influences and approaches to the writing process.

In 2008, our award-winning series closed out its 11th season, and celebrated the beginnings of its 12th. In the spring, Life of Pi author Yann Martel explained the symbolism and structure of his internationally renowned work, while Robert Alexander fascinated with the history of Russia and the Romanovs. Fall Pen Pals attendees heard Michael Beschloss delve into presidential politics and the LBJ White House, and Alexandra Fuller recounted tales from Zimbabwe and Montana. Last year added four more significant names to the long list of literary luminaries to appear on the Pen Pals stage. We look forward to many more entertaining and engaging Pen Pals talks in the years to come. The Pen Pals author lecture series is a major fundraiser for the Library Foundation. Proceeds from this series support Library programs vital to our community. Over the past three years, Pen Pals has raised over $250,000 to support the Foundation and Library programs.

Off the Shelf Gala. The Library Foundation of Hennepin County and the Friends groups throughout the County celebrated in “Wonderland” style with over 400 people at the Minneapolis Central Library on May 31, 2008.

Marking the historic consolidation of the Minneapolis and Hennepin County systems and the first joint initiative hosted by the support organizations, the evening raised $65,000. A portion of the proceeds supported innovative K-12 library programming. The event included entertainment by MacPhail Faculty Jazz Quartet and Tambuca, and a literary-inspired auction.

Minerva Circle. The Minerva Circle is a society of the Foundation’s best fr iends and strongest suppor ters who give $1,000 or more annually to support the Library. A statue of Minerva has welcomed patrons to the Central Library since it opened in 1889. Minerva is the ancient Roman goddess of wisdom, learning, and the arts. She is also the protector of libraries. The Minerva Circle is an integral part of our Foundation community. In 2008, the Minerva Circle’s 195 members raised more than $589,00. Thank you to all of our generous Minerva Circle members. See page 18 for a complete list of members.

The Bookstores. The bookstores at the Central and Washburn libraries offer some of the best bargains in town for book lovers. Our stores sell a combination of books “weeded” from the library collection and books donated by library patrons. In addition, the Central Library store features a wide range of library merchandise, including iconic t-shirts, book bags, and other gifts.

Our stores are operated with the support of 59 volunteers, who contributed 4,150 hours in 2008. The stores raised $131,000 to support the Foundation and library this year.
