DemidTO MAKE HER MARK

When SMSU senior Nissa Nordland says she loves the theater, she means she loves the theater.“(Retired Theatre Professor) Bill Hezlep always says that to me, ‘You love it more than anything, don’t you?’ I do. It’s something I need every day.”

The Theatre Arts major from Albert Lea, Minn., has appeared in 15 Mainstage plays over hercareer, not to mention many Black Box shows, including her senior showcase “The RedheadProject.” She’s experienced all aspects of theatre, from directing to costuming to designing, butprefers to be on stage. It’s her oxygen.

The drive she possesses has led to five nominations for acting honors at the Region 5 KennedyCenter American College Theatre Festival (KCACTF), the Oscars of college theatre. She’s alsoreceived a sound design nomination, and won a trio of cast ensemble merit awards, where theentire cast of an SMSU production is nominated for honors by an attending KCACTF judge.

Graduate school is in her future. “I know I’ll push until I do something in this craft,” she said.

“It’s what I want. It’s what I am.”

ExpienceIN THE CLASSROOM

Students who enter the Education program at SMSU get plenty of opportunities to be in front of aclassroom before their senior-year student teaching experience.

“We’re unique in the number of times our students do get field experiences, from their freshmanyear all the way through to student teaching,” said Dr. Wendy Claussen, Associate Professor ofEducation, one of the two biggest programs at the University. “Our Education students, in oneform or another, get field experience every year.”

Part of Claussen’s job is to supervise student teachers. Public schools within an 80-mile radiuscontract with SMSU each year for student teachers, she said, and in her position, she’s able towitness the maturation of students who grew up wanting to have their own classroom. “Nothingis as rewarding as seeing a student’s progression, seeing them shine,” she said.

And while many personality traits go into the making of a good teacher — passion, flexibility, organizational skills, empathy, professionalism, among them — none is as important as passion.“That’s the one, that’s where it begins,” she said. “That’s what sets teachers apart.”

Southwest Minnesota State University hosted a group of 13 doctoral students from Udon ThaniRajabhat University of Thailand in October 2008, to kick off a four-year agreement between thetwo universities.

The 13 doctoral students spent three weeks on campus. They took a graduate course in Educationfrom SMSU, and worked with area school administrators as part of their Ph.D. program atRajabhat University.

They studied U.S. schools at the elementary, junior high and high school levels, observing howschools operate in southwest Minnesota while having the opportunity to interview teachers andadministrators at participating schools.

Counseling and Testing Director Bob Larsen initiated the agreement between institutions. Hiswife, Premjit, is from Thailand. A Global Studies cluster to Thailand is planned as part of thecollaboration. The SMSU Jazz Band will also travel to Thailand in 2010 for a series of concerts.

Onli CONTHE RISE

The number of students taking online summer courses at the University has grown dramaticallysince they were first offered six years ago. For the first time, the number of online courses takenoutpaced the number of on-campus courses taken during summer session. The increasedavailability of online courses and their convenience helped make the 2009 summer semesterenrollment the largest in school history.

It’s a trend that will continue, said Dr. David Patterson, Associate Professor of Accounting andone of the first to teach online courses at SMSU. He taught online exclusively the past year-and-a-half. “I’m a firm believer in online education,” he said. New technology makes the experiencemore immediate and hands-on for the students, and Patterson believes, under the right conditions, online courses rival courses delivered in the traditional classroom setting.

Keeping up with advancing online delivery technology allows SMSU to increase its number ofundergraduate and graduate course offerings, which makes the University more attractive tostudents both from within the region, and across the country.

Southwest Minnesota State University hosts over 3,000 elementary-age students from across theregion at a trio of conferences during the year.

Sponsored by the Southwest/West Central Service Cooperative and hosted by SMSU, they includethe Young Writers Conference, Young Artists Conference and Science and Nature Conference. TheYoung Artists and Science and Nature Conferences are for those in grades K-8, while the YoungWriters Conference is for those in grades 3-8.

“We saw it as an opportunity to get exposure to the arts in areas they wouldn’t get in schools,”said Sue Gorecki, coordinator of student activities for the Southwest/West Central ServiceCooperative.

Instructors from SMSU and the region conduct the sessions which are filled with fun, engaginghands-on activities throughout the day. Students from the 18-county area travel to SMSU toparticipate.

Yng ArttsCOMMUNITY CONNECTION

Page 9: 2008-2009 President's Report

The SMSU Campus Call Center connects current students to alumni, family, friends, andprospective students of SMSU. A staff of nearly 30 students make calls throughout the year in aneffort to update records, keep you connected to campus, and garner your financial support. Eachstudent makes an average of 125 calls per night.

Thanks to our generous alumni, family and friends, the Phonathon continues to grow each year.Your support provides funding for scholarships, university-wide program enhancements andspecial projects. Donating through the Phonathon is a way to invest in SMSU and stay connected.Perhaps the best reason to give through this program is to show your support for Southwest. Take afew minutes to talk with these students. Ask about campus life and share a story of your ownexperience at Southwest.

Science lab improvements continue at the University, resulting in up-to-date space that greatlyenhances the classroom experience.

The Anatomy/Physiology Lab and Chemistry Lab received $545,000 in renovations, funded by ascience initiative within the state bonding bill, to create state-of-the-art facilities to improvescience and technology education and experience for SMSU students.

The Anatomy/Physiology Lab project includes smart classroom technology, new flooring, ceiling, cabinets, and fume hoods. A new layout features six pods where students sit. Three of the pods arewheelchair accessible. Six computer workstations fill one wall, and eight telescopes on adjustabletables occupy the back of the lab. “It’s just so much more efficient having this layout, versus thelong tables we used to have,” said Dr. Sandy Craner, Associate Professor of Biology.

“It’s a more lively environment. There is more interaction between the students, and we’re able to

do different activities in different areas.”

Associate Professor of Accounting Dr. Will Thomas incorporates real-life experience in hisclassroom but with a special mission — to assist low- and moderate-income people prepare theirincome taxes.

Collaborating with Western Community Action for the past three years, Thomas’ students preparetax returns for income-eligible clients. In 2009, a dozen students completed training andcertification in the IRS Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program and aided 577 local individuals.

Volunteer Michael Wulf, a senior accounting major from Sioux Falls, S.D., worked with hisclassmates to help Western Community Action clients receive $913,725 in income tax refunds.

Thomas said it’s a good way for his students to take what they master in the classroom and applyit in a unique and practical way. “Volunteering this way benefits the students in so many ways. They are learning, doing something that gives back to the community and gives them thesatisfaction of helping others.”

Bill Holm was a giant of a man, both literally, and figuratively. Standing six-and-a-half-feet tall,Bill was a beloved English professor at SMSU for 27 years, retiring at the end of fall semester2008. He died unexpectedly of complications from pneumonia on Feb. 25, 2009 while returningfrom Arizona. He was 65.

Bill was an immensely talented poet, essayist and musician who was named the winner of theprestigious McKnight Distinguished Artist Award in 2008. He wrote 16 books, innumerable essaysand other pieces, and was considered a state treasure. Some of his other titles included BoxelderBug Variations (1985), Coming Home Crazy (2000), Eccentric Islands (2000) and Playing theBlack Piano (2004).

He loved to travel and experience new people and ideas, yet always returned to his belovedMinneota, Minn., which he wrote about in his book, The Heart Can Be Filled Anywhere on Earth.

Bill was fiercely proud of his Icelandic heritage and spent summers in a cabin called Brimnes inHofsos, Iceland. Bill was a champion of everyman and railed against societal injustices. He wroteeverything longhand, on yellow legal pads, and delighted in the fact he did not own a computeror a television.

The Southwest Minnesota State men’s basketball team put together one of the most memorableseasons in school history in 2008-09, winning both the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conferenceand NCAA Central Region championships.

For the first time in school history, SMSU hosted the NCAA Region Tournament and entered theeight-team tournament as the No. 1 seed with a record of 25-6. Playing in front of a packed RAFacility, SMSU downed Northern State in the quarterfinals and Minnesota State, Mankato in thesemifinals.

SMSU beat Augustana 73-60 in the championship game, played to a record crowd of nearly4,000 fans. It was the University’s second regional championship in school history and propelledthe team to the national Elite Eight Division II tournament, played in Springfield, Mass. SMSU lostto eventual national runner-up Cal Poly Pomona 79-74 in the first round.

Unselfish play was the hallmark of the team as, amazingly, not one Mustang player averageddouble figures in scoring throughout the championship season, making it a true team effort andsuccess.

Dear Fellow Alumni and Friends,

The Southwest Minnesota State University Foundation is pleased to share with you our 2008-2009 AnnualReport. We would like to thank and recognize those whose time, talents and financial contributions have sogenerously supported the University.

This past year was a challenging one, but still very impactful for the Southwest Minnesota State UniversityFoundation. The pressures of the economic climate and the turmoil in the financial markets had theirnegative impacts on alumni giving and endowment performance. However, the Foundation was wellpositioned to weather this downturn and several strategic investments, including our Foundation ResidenceApartments and a sports marketing program on campus, have helped raise additional revenue to maintain ahigh level of private support. The support from countless alumni and friends gave us the ability to contributenearly $5.5 million back to the University with over $720,000 going directly to student scholarships.

The SMSU Foundation received a record $4,098,957 in contributions, revenue and support this past year, thelargest total in the history of the Foundation. This was made possible by the generosity of 5,531 donors. Thetotal net assets of the Foundation, however, dropped from $8,644,130 to $6,682,031, primarily as a result ofthe market downturn and the final transfer of dollars and equipment to the University in support of the newRegional Event Center.

As you read through this report, please note all of the individuals and businesses that have so generouslysupported Southwest Minnesota State University. While this report lists only those donors who have givenover $100 or more this past fiscal year, a complete listing of all donors is on display in the Alumni HeritageGallery located on campus in the Student Center. No matter what the size of the gift, please know that eachand every gift is important and appreciated by SMSU.

On behalf of the SMSU Foundation Board of Directors, thank you for all that you do to make SouthwestMinnesota State a great University.

Sincerely,

Bill MulsoExecutive DirectorSMSU Foundation

It’s impossible to say how many SMSU students took advantage of Doug Sweetland’s offer to stop byany time for a chat, but many did.

The former SMSU president, who served from 1994 to 2000, loved nothing more than interactionwith students. He insisted on teaching one course per semester, so he could maintain contact withyoung people and what they were doing and thinking. When he said his door was always open, hemeant it. His impact on students was immeasurable.

So when Doug Sweetland died on July 21, 2009, following a courageous battle with cancer,SMSU President Dr. David Danahar wanted to honor the man who served the University so noblyduring a crucial time in its history by naming its newest residence hall after him.

“Under his tutelage, the enrollment increased significantly. At the same time, he restructured theUniversity and as a consequence was able to enhance the size and quality of the teaching faculty.Without question, he was an effective and able leader, well respected by the larger regionalcommunity as well as by the campus community. Sweetland Hall will be an enduring and fittingtestimony to his service and commitment to this University and its students,” said President Danahar.

Sweetland Hall opened in the fall of 2009. The Sweetland family established the Doug SweetlandMemorial Scholarship in his honor. Donations can be made to the SMSU Foundation.

Dear Alumni & Friends,

This past year has seen our country’s economic challenges impact many segments of our diverseeconomy. Higher education and specifically Southwest Minnesota State University were certainlynot exempt from the financial downturn. Statewide budget shortfalls continue to erode the state’sinvestment in our educational systems and threaten the quality of arguably Minnesota’s greatestassets, our colleges and universities.

Challenges, however, are nothing new in the education world. Those challenges provideopportunities for re-focus, planning and new strategic initiatives. As state support continues todecline, the private support we receive from our alumni and friends becomes even moreimportant to the University. Private contributions this past year have allowed us to better ouracademic programs, improve our facilities and increase access and opportunity to a qualityeducation through scholarships. This annual report provides just a glimpse of the many wonderfulthings that were accomplished at Southwest this past year.

A new year brings a renewed call for your continued support, both financially and as advocatesfor education in this great state. Our elected officials need to hear from you about the importanceof investing in our state universities and the value that investment brings to both the quality of lifein Minnesota and the workforce that drives our economy.

Thank you for your personal generosity, support and continued investment in SouthwestMinnesota State University.
