After a magical run through the NCAA Tournament, their fi rst SCAC Championship since 2001 and a school-record 28-4 fi nish, the 2008-09 Millsaps

men’s basketball team hopes to continue a winning tradi-tion that has been established the previous two seasons by the departed senior class. “It will certainly be a different look with the seniors gone from last year and the success they had the previ-ous two years,” sixth-year head coach Tim Wise said. Last year’s team handled the ball extremely well and forced opposing teams into bad decisions, which con-tributed to the most successful season in the program’s 97-year history. Millsaps had the SCAC’s No. 1 scoring offense at 77.5 ppg and committed just 394 turnovers against 557 assists, ranking fourth nationally at 1.41 to 1 in assist/turnover ratio. The Majors dished out 17.4 dimes per game (9th nationally), led by senior guard Chad Songy with 126. “Taking care of the basketball and eliminating turn-overs is something we’ve emphasized. The combination of our defensive pressure and solid guards who have played a lot of games put that turnover ratio around 11 a game for us, while we forced 19 a game.” Under Wise, who recently moved into fourth all-time on the career wins list at 74-61 overall, Millsaps has won 42 of its last 50 games (84 percent) dating back to the 2006-07 season. The Majors were a perfect 16-0 in the Hangar Dome last season and carry a 17-game overall home winning streak into the 2008-09 campaign. With the loss of two, four-year starters in Lorenzo Bai-ley and Rodney Rogan, a three-year starter in All-American Edrick Montgomery and fre-quent starters Allen Odum (80 games – 43 starts) and Deonte Oscar (87 games – 35 starts), Millsaps is without 65 percent of its scoring from a year ago and close to 61 percent of its rebounding. “The ability to score is a concern with the graduation of three, 1,000-point scorers,” Wise said. “The last few years we’ve felt that if we could be close in rebounding that the amount of turnovers we caused would give us more op-portunities on the other goal. Rebounding will be more of a premium this year with the absence of guys like Mont-gomery and Rogan at the forward spots.” Montgomery, the SCAC’s Player of the Year runner-up the past two seasons, ended his stay as Millsaps' career-

leader in rebounds with 761, one better than John Garber who grabbed 760 boards from 1993-97. He also ranks second all-time in rebounding average (9.2 rpg), third in blocks (116), fi fth in points (1,383) and seventh in fi eld goals made (552) and fi eld goals attempted (1,043), while becoming only the seventh player to score 1,000 career points and grab 500 career boards. The contributions from Bailey, Rogan, Odum and Oscar will be missed just the same. Bailey set a new career record in 3-pointers made (232) and attempted (617), Rogan fi nished in the Top 5 all-time in four offensive categories, Odum fi nished with 200+ assists and 100+ steals and Oscar had a 41 per-cent career fi eld goal percentage. Wise and third-year assistant coach Justin LeBlanc will work with two returning senior starters in Chris Sanders and Chad Songy and will rely on several key role players from a year ago to fi ll out the remaining three slots. Sanders, 6-foot-4 guard who has the potential to have a breakout season, averaged 9.4 ppg and 5.2 rpg last season. The senior from Brandon played in 31 of 32 games, ranking fi rst on the team in 3-point percentage (.400) and steals (56) and third in fi eld goal percentage (.462). He is the returning rebounding leader and will have to use his pure ability and wingspan to help lead the Majors’ defense. The hero that sent Millsaps into the “Sweet Sixteen” with a last-second shot to defeat Mary Hardin-Baylor 57-56, Songy returns as the starting point-guard with plenty of poise. The senior from Lafayette, La., started 22 of the Majors’ fi nal 23 games and provided an immediate spark in the scoring col-umn. Songy reached double fi gures in scoring in 11 of the fi nal

23 games and dished out 97 assists, to fi nish at 8.8 ppg and 3.9 apg for the year. Juniors Cameron Var-nado and Blake Martinez established themselves as key players off the bench at just fewer than 13 mpg and will compete with Chris Ingle and Russell Booth to join Sanders and Songy in the starting role. Varnado is a guy who can come in and take an important charge and provide solid defense,

while Martinez is used more as a shooter from the perimeter with a career 3-point percentage of .390. Booth, the fi nal se-nior, provides a 6-foot-6 frame in the post that can block a few shots and also knock down a shot from beyond the arc. Ingle, a 6-foot-5 sophomore forward from Baton Rouge, La., missed the entire 2007-08 season with a back injury and will

get his chance to start. As a freshman, Ingle played in 26 of the Majors’ 27 games, knocked down 44 percent of his shots from the fl oor and grabbed 38 boards. He, Booth and Sanders will be looked upon to do a majority of the rebounding with the absence of three of the top four rebounders. Chris Steele and Cody Aucoin, who combined to play in 33 games, have parted ways with the Majors, while sophomores Richard Craven, Brett Hittel, and Morgen Viel are all back for another run at a conference championship. Viel has the most court experience of the bunch, playing in 13 games as a true freshman. The 6-foot-4 guard from League City, Texas, provides a ton of athleticism and can get up and down the court to help the Majors succeed this year. In the offseason, Millsaps also welcomed nine new play-ers to the team in Jeff Brown (Atlanta, Ga./Marist HS), Chase

Cone (Atlanta, Ga./Marist HS), Ben Coo-per (Guntersville, Ala./Guntersville HS), Ryan Doherty (Sugar Land, Texas/Clements HS), Kaylon Durham (Mem-phis, Tenn./White Station HS), Joe Hunter (New Orleans, La./Ben Franklin HS), John Love (New Orleans, La./Jesuit HS), Brian Merkel (Baton Rouge, La./Saint Michael the Archangel) and Jason O’Rear (Mandeville, La./Northlake Chris-tian). Practice offi cially opened on Oct. 15 in the Hangar Dome and the Majors’ fi rst game of the season is slated

for Nov. 15 at 7 p.m. against cross-street rival Belhaven Col-lege. After three straight road games to open the year, Millsaps will put its 17-game home winning streak on the line against Wesley College on Friday, Nov. 28 at 7 p.m.

S

HEAD COACH TIM WISE

The Coach:Tim Wise enters his sixth season as the Millsaps

men’s basketball head coach after guid-ing the Majors to a 74-61 overall record the previous fi ve seasons at the helm. The Majors were a perfect 16-0 at home a year ago and have won 42 of their last 50 games overall dating back to the 2006-07 season. The 2007-08 season provided its share of highlights, with the team winning its fi rst SCAC Championship since 2001, posting the best record in school history at 28-4 and advancing all the way to the Elite Eight in St. Louis before falling to the eventual national champion. On top of that, D3hoops.com rewarded Millsaps with a No. 6 ranking in the fi nal poll of the season, the highest they’ve ever fi nished in the program’s 97-year history. They were also recognized as the 17th most improved team in all of Division III basketball. Wise won just 14 games against 36 losses as head coach during the 2003-04 and 2004-05 seasons after taking over for Millsaps’ all-time winning coach John Stroud, but has guided the Majors to a 60-25 record over the previous three seasons to become the fourth winningest coach in school history dating back to 1911. The Majors lose fi ve, key players from last year’s starting lineup, including SCAC

Player of the Year runner-up Edrick Montgomery in the post, and will have to rely on the play of three returning seniors and a pair of juniors. A native of Memphis, Tenn., Wise played both basketball and golf for Millsaps from 1985-89, earning four letters each under head coach Don Holcomb and the late Mary Ann Edge. Wise graduated from Millsaps in 1989 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Eco-nomics. He holds the Millsaps career record for assists with 552. A 1985 graduate of Memphis University School, Wise coached at three Memphis area high schools from 1989-98. He started his coaching and teaching career in 1989 at St. Benedict Catholic School in Cordova, Tenn. In 1992, Wise returned to Memphis University School where he coached the junior varsity until 1997. In the fall of 1997, Wise moved to newly opened Cordova High School as the men’s head basketball coach and head golf coach. Wise, also Millsaps’ athletic director, is married to the former Rachel Cook of Mem-phis, who is also a Millsaps graduate. They have three children, Luke, Anna and Allie.

TEAM PHILOSOPHY

“WE ARE A GROUP OF INDIVIDUALS USING THE STRENGTHS OF EACH OF US AND THE COMMITMENT OF ALL OF US TO STRIVE FOR PERFECTION EVERY DAY. THERE IS NO PROBLEM TOO DIFFICULT TO SOLVE AND NO GOAL TOO LOFTY TO

ACHIEVE. WE TAKE PRIDE IN OURSELVES, OUR TEAMMATES, AND IN WHAT WE REPRESENT. WE ARE CONFIDENT AND COURAGEOUS IN OUR EFFORT TO ACHIEVE OUR GOALS BECAUSE WE HAVE PREPARED FOR THE BATTLES ON THE COURT AND IN LIFE. OUR ENTHUSIASM AND WILLINGNESS TO WORK HARD ARE A RESULT OF OUR LOVE FOR THE GAME, OUR

RESPECT FOR EACH OTHER AND OUR DETERMINATION TO WIN.”

------The Millsaps Women’s Basketball Team

2008-09 Millsaps College Basketball 27

Excitement surrounds the 2008-09 edition of the Millsaps College women’s basketball squad. With a blend of veteran presence and youthful energy, the

main goal for this year’s squad is to win its fi rst confer-ence championship together. With all fi ve starters returning to the fl oor and the ad-dition of seven newcomers, third-year head coach Mary Bolton now has more depth and talent to work with than ever. The only thing holding back the Majors will be stay-ing healthy and eliminating turnovers. “We have a great combination of returning players who are now more experienced at playing at the col-legiate level,” Bolton said. Our newcomers will make an immediate impact to the team and I feel strongly about us winning a SCAC Championship this season.” A big part of any success this season will rely on the play of the fi ve seniors on the team. Crystal Dick-erson, Tiffany Whitmore, LaReina Adams, Jessica Bowie and Amber King return to the team hungry and as more experienced basketball play-ers. Dickerson and Adams have been at the core of the offensive scoring for the team for the last three years, while Whitmore made an immediate impact for the Majors after transfer-ring from Louisiana State-Eunice last season. Dickerson averaged a team-best 12.2 points and 7.8 rebounds in 24 games and was second to fellow classmate Whitmore in fi eld goals made. Whitmore, who averaged 11.8 points, led the team with 71 assists. At 6-foot-2, Bowie has been strong for the Majors in the post, averaging 9.4 points and grabbing 8.3 rebounds per game (fourth in the SCAC). Her 53 blocks ranked third in the conference overall, while her 2.79 bpg ranked fi rst. Adams has been a force on both ends of the court, averaging 10.4 points and 8.1 rebounds per game a year ago. Adams has totaled 18 double-doubles in her career thus far, tallying 11 in 2006-07 to lead the conference and seven in 2007-08. “I am looking forward to seeing some big contribu-tions from my seniors this year,” Bolton said. “This is their last chance to shine on the court and I have a feeling they will step up their game and play really aggressive basketball.” Setting up the plays offensively for Millsaps will be sophomore point guard Cori Tucker. According to Bolton,

Tucker is one of the best at setting up the offensive schemes that have been drawn up for the team. “No one can beat Cori at setting up the plays at the point guard position. She is one of the best out there.” After playing in all 25 games as a true freshman and earn-ing the start in 22, Ronda Webb also returns to the Majors’ lineup after shooting 46 percent from the fl oor. A lockdown defender who can also score at will, Webb ranked second on the team in steals with 38, while averaging just over 8.1 ppg. As for the newcomers on the team, there will be many chances for them to contribute early. Some of the names to watch out for are Janice Okeke, Olivia Coats, Brittany Ussin, Morgan Shell, Ashton Foust and Chloe Carr. Both Okeke and

Coats will help the Majors immediately on offense, with their speed impacting the transitional/fast break opportunities. Shell and Foust will bring intensity and energy to the team, while Carr is a big post player that has a great shot from beyond the 3-point arc. “No spot on this team is secure and I expect for many of my newcomers to play quality minutes and even get into the starting line-up this year,” Bolton said. Another new thing to the basketball team this year is the new strength and conditioning program the staff has imple-mented. “I really feel this new program will help the players last longer on the court and be more dynamic and explosive scor-ing in games.” “We have a long way to go to the top, but as long as we are aggressive, stay healthy and play fundamentally sound basketball, then a championship is within

our reach. The team is very motivated and hungry, especially our seniors because they know this is their best opportunity to win. They also want to build a program that any young girl would want to be apart of. I am very excited and can’t wait for the basketball season to start.” The 2008-09 slate features 15 away games against 10 home games. The Majors start the season with a four-game road stretch before hosting their fi rst home game against Rust College on Nov. 30 at 5 p.m. They will then host their fi rst conference game against Hendrix College on Dec. 6 at 3 p.m. This year’s conference tournament is back in Conway, Ark., for a second season from Feb. 27 – March 1.

Bolton’s Coaching Record

The Coach:After joining the Majors' staff in August of 2006,

and weathering a tough fi rst two seasons, McLain native Mary Bolton returns for a third year at the helm of the women's basketball program in 2008-09 with a wealth of veteran presence and youthful energy. Bolton is the ninth women’s basketball coach in the program’s 30-year history, hold-ing a 10-38 overall record with the Majors, including a 7-18 mark last season and 4-11 record in league play. The third-year coach recorded her fi rst Millsaps career win at home on Nov. 18, 2006, a 78-55 victory over Rust. Coming off an improvement of four wins, Bolton did not lose a single senior from last year's team and returns four starters in ad-dition to seven newcomers. The new faces include standouts Olivia Coats (Dallas, Texas/Highland Park HS) and Janice Okeke (Jack-son, Miss./Murrah HS) who should fi nd a spot in the starting lineup immediately. In just her fi rst season, Bolton's tutelage helped sophomore LaReina Adams gain All-

SCAC Honorable Mention recognition after averaging 13.0 points and 10.8 rebounds per game. Last year, that number grew to three, as Crystal Dickerson was tabbed Third Team All-SCAC and both Adams and Tiffany Whit-more were named honorable mentions. Bolton is no stranger to the college courts, having served as an assistant coach at the University of Southern Mississippi and Jones County Junior College. She also acted as head coach at Perry Central High School. In addition to her role as head women’s basketball coach, Bolton took over as the Senior Woman Administrator upon her arrival. She was named to the National Association of College Women Athletic Administrators Class of 2007 West. The former mayor of McLain from 2001-04, Bolton is a graduate of Nicholls State University in Thibodaux, La., where she received her bachelor's in physical education and participated as a women’s basketball student-athlete. She later earned her mas-ter's degree from the University of Southern Mississippi. Coach Bolton’s two sisters, Ruthie and Mae Ola Bolton, are former WNBA players. Ruthie Bolton is known for playing on two United States Olympic Women’s Basketball teams.

ASST. COACH JOHN REED

The Coach:John Reed enters his 24th year of coaching and

his third on the Millsaps women’s basketball staff as an assistant coach, working primar-ily with post players and playing a part in recruiting efforts. Prior to joining the Majors’ staff in 2006, Reed spent one season coaching side-by-side with his daughter Tameka and with head coach Denise Taylor at neighboring Jackson State University, earning the title of SWAC Co-Champions. Reed coached football, baseball and bas-ketball with the YMCA boy’s club (junior high – high school) for 17 years upon his arrival to college coaching, winning 13 champion-

ships in little league play. For his efforts with local area youth, Reed received recognition around the community, including the Ronald Reagan Outstanding Achievement Award. He’s coached several football players who have advanced to the collegiate and national level, including OL Toby Myer who played for the New York Giants in the mid 90’s. He’s also had players play for Auburn, MSU and Ole Miss out of the Southeastern Conference and Alcorn State, JSU and Grambling out of the Southwest Athletic Conference. Born into a family of 10 with seven boys and three girls, Reed is the father of three boys, Casanova, Carlos and Victor and one girl, Tameka of his own. He currently resides in Jackson.

*In 1978, the administration at Millsaps College reinstated the women’s intercollegiate basketball program for the fi rst time since the 1935 season. The Majors originally competed in the Mississippi Intercollegiate League from 1920-35, winning the Mississippi State Women’s Title during the 1931 season. Few records remain today to track the success of Millsaps’ earliest women’s basket-ball teams that battled state powers such as Ole Miss, Delta State and Mississippi University for Women.
