Transport Canada is continuing
its restrictions on passenger
transport of liquids, aerosols
and gels through Canadian airports.
Passengers are permitted to bring liquids,
gels and aerosols through security
screening at Canadian airports only if
the items are packaged in containers
with a capacity of no more than 100
millilitres/100 grams and the containers
fit comfortably in one clear, closed and
resealable plastic bag with a capacity of
no more than one litre.
This reminder is important, as the
United States Transportation Security
Administration (TSA) announced on
May 1, 2008, that it has approved the
use of security tamper-evident bags for
the transportation of duty-free liquids,
purchased post-TSA security, on flights
leaving the U.S.
However, passengers are advised
that security tamper-evident bags are
not approved in Canada at this time.
Passengers who arrive in Canada and Anglers can now hop on a plane in Vancouver and in less
than three hours be casting their rods in the waters off
the north coast of the Charlottes.
Air North, Yukon’s Airline, has partnered with Queen
Charlotte Lodge to provide a direct flight between YVR’s South
Terminal and Masset Airport. The new service launches on May
30, just in time for the opening day of the 18th fishing season
at Queen Charlotte Lodge, which runs until early September.
The charter flight will operate on Mondays and Fridays,
transporting passengers, baggage and freshly caught fish
between YVR and Masset Airport on an 80-minute flight.
Delivering its signature “golden air of hospitality,” Air
North’s flight will enhance the traveller experience with
increased passenger comfort and reduced flight time to the
remote north. Flights will take to the skies in Air North’s Boeing
737-200 or Hawker-Siddeley 748 turbo-prop aircraft. From
Masset, passengers will be flown via Helijet helicopter service
in and out of the lodge in Naden Harbour.
Headquartered in Whitehorse, Air North is 48.8 per
cent owned by the Vuntut Development Corporation,
the economic arm of the Vuntut Gwitchin First Nation. It
operates scheduled and charter services throughout the
Yukon, with extensions to Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton,
Fairbanks, Alaska, and Inuvik, Northwest Territories.

If you happened to see a buzz of
activity on the south side of YVR on
the morning of April 15, there was no
cause for alarm. The Airport Authority
was simply testing emergency response
plans with a live emergency exercise.
More than 100 volunteers and
multiple agencies participated in a
scenario that involved a mid-air collision
of two aircraft, in which one aircraft
landed in the water and the other at the
threshold of the crosswind runway. The
scenario was selected to involve multiple
airlines and as many responders as
possible, including Canada Coast Guard,
Richmond RCMP, Richmond Fire Rescue,
Canada Border Services Agency and
Vancouver Coastal Health Authority.
More than 100 volunteers playing
injured victims, passengers and family
members participated in the exercise,

Air Canada announces changes to its checked baggage policy
Air Canada will implement changes to its checked
baggage policy on flights within Canada, and between
Canada and the U.S. including Hawaii, effective May 15,
2008 for travel on or after July 15, 2008.
Under the new policy, customers who purchase Tango
and Tango Plus tickets may check one bag at no charge
and a second bag for a $25 service fee. Tango and Tango
Plus customers will continue to
have the choice of customizing
their fare including obtaining a
discount when travelling without
checked luggage.
“In an environment of record
high and unrelenting fuel costs it
is more critical than ever that the airline reviews its product
offering to ensure it can continue to offer everyday low fares,”

On may 1, 2008, the Airport Authority welcomed
members of the community to our Annual Public
meeting where we had the opportunity to meet with
a number of our constituents and present our 2007 operational
and financial review.
As a private, not-for-profit corporation we do not have equity
shareholders but we do have stakeholders from many walks of life
who have a “stake” in what we do and how well we perform. our
mission at YVR is to serve this community. We serve the business
community by connecting them to customers and suppliers and
new opportunities. We serve the public by connecting them to
friends and family and tourism destinations near and far.
We serve the community by building better airport facilities –
in 2007, we completed a new wing on our International Terminal;
the Link Building which will provide more international check-in
facilities, and also gate C38, to better serve our Interprovincial
customers.
YVR is a community-based organization and we are dedicated
to producing results for our customers and our community. To
review our 2007 Annual and Sustainability reports online, visit
www.yvr.ca > Who We Are > Annual Report. The site also includes
an online form that you can fill out if you’d like to have a printed
copy mailed to you.
Last year, we continued to grow at YVR—a record 17.5-
million passengers arrived and departed through our airport—
representing a 3.4 per cent increase over 2006. our studies
showed that passenger travel to and from the U.S. rose by 2.6
per cent and domestic passengers increased by 3.5 per cent. on
international routes to Europe, traffic increased by 3.4 per cent
and our Asian traffic increased 3.5 per cent. The increased volume
hasn’t diminished our performance. Customer satisfaction
surveys in 2007 showed that 87 per cent of all passengers were
satisfied or very satisfied with our facilities and services.
Consulting with the community and getting their feedback
plays an important role in our ongoing operations and each year
we look for opportunities to let the community know what we
are doing and why.
In addition to our Annual Public meeting, I have been
meeting with members of the business community – at a
presentation to the Richmond Chamber of Commerce (in march)
and the Vancouver Board of Trade (in April). This past spring, a
number of our senior executives took part in metro Vancouver’s
Future of the Region Sustainability Dialogues.
Throughout the next few months, we will continue to seek
public input as we make formal presentations before various
municipal councils throughout metro Vancouver. As well, YVR
will take part in a variety of community and charitable events
throughout the year. Your input is always welcome through the
Contact Us section on our website.
our willingness to listen to the community, learn from our
experiences, and continually improve our performance lies at the
heart of our success now and in the future.

Answer: Piper AztecThe Piper PA-23, named Apache and later Aztec, was an American twin-engined monoplane, the first twin-engine aircraft built by Piper Aircraft.Declining sales of the Apache promoted the redesign dubbed PA-23-250 Aztec.Among other light twin-engined airplanes of its generation, the Aztec was known for its good load hauling, long endurance, stable handling and respectable single-engine performance, at the cost of higher fuel consumption and a slower airframe.

giving everyone involved a realistic

YVR’s Emergency Management
Plan centres around three principles—
prevent, prepare and practice—and
deals with any emergency, be it an
aircraft incident; a natural disaster,
such as an earthquake, fire or flood; a
medical emergency; a security threat; or
a biological hazard.
The plan is assessed and refined
on an ongoing basis to incorporate
knowledge gained through real-life
and simulated emergencies, and the
latest developments in airport safety
and emergency. And because a plan is
only as good as its execution, practicing
with live scenario training, emergency
simulations and tabletop exercises are
essential to ensuring the continued
safety of passengers and airport
employees.
and chief administrative officer. “This
policy change is part of the on-going
review of our activities that allow us
to keep pace with current industry
standards and economic realities, while
remaining competitive with our main
North American competitors.”
There is no change in the checked
bag policy for customers purchasing
Latitude and Executive Class tickets.
Air Canada Elite, Super Elite and
Prestige members, as well as Star Alliance
Gold and Silver members, maintain
their current baggage allowance when
purchasing Tango and Tango Plus fares.
Baggage allowance for travel to and
from countries other than Canada and
the United States will remain unchanged.
This includes North American flights as
part of international travel.
Complete details of Air Canada’s
baggage policies are available at www.
aircanada.com.
are required to undergo Canadian
Air Transport Security Authority
screening on their way to a connecting
flight will be asked to surrender
any liquids, aerosols or gels that
do not comply with the restrictions
mentioned above, with or without a
security tamper-evident bag.
Transport Canada has been assessing
the issue of security tamper-evident bags
and is working with European authorities
to implement an arrangement similar to
that announced by the TSA as soon as
possible, provided security standards
are maintained.
As part of continued efforts
to reduce emissions in our
communities, the Airport
Authority recently launched Idle-
Free at YVR, a campaign designed to
reduce unnecessary vehicle idling at the
airport.
The initiative aims to educate airport
employees, bus drivers, taxi drivers
and the public using visible curbside
signs that remind drivers to turn off
engines. An important target is reducing
idling frequency and duration for the
Airport Authority’s vehicle fleet, which
includes YVR buses, airside trucks and
emergency vehicles.
Natural Resources Canada (NRC)
reports that an idling car can release
up to twice as many exhaust fumes
as a moving car. It cites studies that
have shown a direct link between
contaminants in vehicle emissions and
significant respiratory health effects.
NRC also says 10 seconds of idling uses
more fuel than restarting the engine and
that if every Canadian driver avoided
idling for five minutes per day, it would
prevent 1.6-million tones of carbon
dioxide from being emitted into the
atmosphere.
Idle-Free is just one of the ways
that YVR and its partners are taking
action towards a sustainable future.
YVR supports the local economy by
connecting people and services, and is
working to do so in a sustainable manner
that addresses social and environmental
needs.
Next time you drop off a friend or
family member off at YVR, remember to
turn off your engine. You’ll save fuel and
money and limit vehicle exhaust.
Another important aspect of the Idle-
Free campaign is training, supporting
and motivating YVR business partners
about changes they can make to the
environment at the airport.
Recently, one of YVR’s partners,
Purolator Courier, introduced 30 hybrid
electric delivery vehicles to its curbside
delivery fleet. Purolator also has a
strict no-idling rule, which imposes an
automatic 20-second maximum idle time
on all its vehicles, helping to conserve
fuel and reduce emissions. Keep a watch
out for one of these hybrid delivery
trucks as it runs to and from YVR.

Swedish operator Nord-
Flyg has ordered two 11-PF
Package Freighter conversions
from Cascade Aerospace, which will
be the first of their kind in the
world. Cascade will convert the first
aircraft to Q400-PF configuration
at its heavy maintenance and
modification facility in Abbotsford
by August 2008, and will deliver
the second in kit form to Nord-Flyg.
The latter will have the kit installed
in a second aircraft at a yet-to-be-
disclosed facility in Europe.
Nord-Flyg acquired the two
Bombardier Q400 aircraft from
Scandinavian Airlines in March 2008.
The Q400-PF Package Freighter is
based on a similar conversion Cascade
produced for the Government of France,
which was a multi-role Airtanker, dubbed
by Cascade as the Q400-MR. Cascade
designed, built, certified and delivered
two Q400-MR multi-role Airtankers to
France in 2005, which today are used
in the passenger, aerial fire control and
cargo roles.
The Q400-PF Package Freighter will
be of similar design, and use the existing
Cascade Supplemental Type Certificate
(STC) for product modification, except
that the Package Freighter will employ
a multi-zone, vertical net system to
accommodate packages, which for
Nord-Flyg, are typically mail packages.
Cascade designed, certified and
built a similar “vertical net” Package
Freighter conversion for installation in
Bombardier’s CRJ200 aircraft and has
sold two CRJ200PF kits to a Europe-
based leasing company.
“The Cascade Q400-PF Package
Freighter will be an additional
workhouse to Nord-Flyg’s present
freighter fleet and will modernize the
present aging turbo prop cargo fleets
in Europe,” said Nord-Flyg president,
Ulf Denarius. “Nord-Flyg is convinced
that this new generation turboprop will
be welcomed by the industry, because
of its ability to perform at jet-like
speeds on both long and shor-haul
routes.”
Cascade Aerospace is a privately
owned Canadian company providing
program and fleet management, heavy
maintenance, repair, overhaul and
modification services for commercial and
military transport aircraft. The company
is the prime contractor in providing full
fleet management services for Canada’s
Department of National Defence’s fleet
of C-130 aircraft, as well as on-going
heavy maintenance service to WestJet,
Alaska Airlines and others.

Personal travel kits provide all the necessities
Last month, Delta and Northwest
Airlines announced an agreement
in which the two carriers will
combine in an all-stock transaction with
a combined enterprise value of $17.7-
billion, creating the world’s biggest
carrier.
The new airline, which will be called
Delta, will provide employees with an
equity stake in the combined airline.
Delta CEO Richard Anderson will be
chief executive officer of the combined
company. The Board of Directors will
be made up of 13 members, seven of
whom will come from Delta’s board,
including Anderson, and five of whom
will come from Northwest’s board,
including Doug Steenland, the current
Northwest CEO. One director will come
from the Air Line Pilots Association
(ALPA).
Combined, the company and its
regional partners will provide access
to more than 390 destinations in 67
countries. Delta and Northwest,
together, will have more than $35-billion
in annual revenues, operate a mainline
fleet of nearly 800 aircraft and
employ approximately 75,000 people
worldwide.
In an industry where the U.S.
network carriers have shed more
than 150,000 jobs and lost more than
$29-billion since 2001, the combination
of Delta and Northwest is set to create a
company with a more resilient business
model that is better able to withstand
volatile fuel prices than either can on a
standalone basis.
The transaction is expected to
generate more than $1-billion in annual
revenue and cost savings from more
effective aircraft utilization, a more
comprehensive and diversified route
system and reduced overhead and
improved operational efficiency.
The merger will offer customers and
communities direct service between the
United States and the world’s major
business centres.
Record fuel prices have fundamentally
changed the economics of the airline
industry. Fuel is the highest single
expense for Delta and Northwest. At
the beginning of 2007, oil prices were
approximately $55 a barrel. Now, oil
prices have nearly doubled, making the
transaction even more compelling.
The agreement, which is subject to
pilot ratification, provides the Delta
pilots a 3.5 per cent equity stake in the
new company and other enhancements
to their current contract.
Delta officials have said it will use its
best efforts to reach a combined Delta-
Northwest pilot agreement, including
resolution of pilot seniority integration,
before the closing of the merger.

Delta and Northwest combining to create world’s largest airline
WestJet has introduced fuel surcharges of $20,
$30 and $45 on all short, medium and long-
haul flights, effective immediately.
This follows the decision by Air Canada earlier this
month to charge $20, 40 and $60 on every one-way ticket
flying within Canada and the United States. Costs for a

“This is not a decision we have taken lightly,” said
Bob Cummings, WestJet executive vice-president, guest
experience and marketing. “All Canadians have felt the
impact of rising fuel prices and the airline industry is no
exception. We held off as long as economically possible,
but with the unrelenting and unprecedented increases in
the cost of fuel over the last year we are implementing
this measure to offset the effect.”

When Zoom Airlines first
started flying to the U.K.
from Canada in the summer
of 2003 it was a niche carrier for U.K.
leisure travel, operating flights from five
Canadian cites to four centres in the U.K.
Five years later Zoom has transformed
itself into an international transatlantic
carrier for value-conscious Canadian
travellers and expects to carry nearly half-
a-million Canadians to Europe in 2008.
The addition of Rome to Zoom’s
U.K. and Paris routes coincides with
the growing popularity of Europe as an
overseas destination for Canadians.
According to Statistics Canada, seven
of the top 15 overseas destinations for
Canadians are located in Europe and
over the period 2001-2006 the number
of Canadians travelling to these seven
European countries increased by 37 per
cent.
The U.K., which is still the number one
European destination for Canadians, also
remains the number one transatlantic
destination for Zoom. The airline now
serves five destinations in the United
Kingdom (London, Glasgow, Manchester,
Cardiff and Belfast) from seven Canadian
cities (Vancouver, Calgary, Winnipeg
Toronto, Ottawa, Montreal and Halifax).
Zoom will operate 27 flights per week
to the U.K. this summer, including daily
flights from Vancouver and Toronto,
while its service to Paris, which now
represents 25 per cent of the airline’s
passengers, will see seven flights per
week.
During Zoom’s early days, ex-pat
travellers to Britain took advantage of
the carrier’s economic airfares. And
while Zoom continues to attract ex-pats
with the lowest scheduled airfares across
the Atlantic, it has also hit a sweet spot
with boomers and young travellers who
are looking for a Canadian carrier that
provides value, but not at the expense of
comfort and flight flexibility.
“At one time air travel was a
special experience,” said Kris Dolinki,
chief executive officer, Zoom Airlines.
“Too often today it’s not. At Zoom, we
have put ourselves in the seat of our
customers and asked ourselves what
would we want if we were taking a
transatlantic flight and it comes down
to four things: seating comfort, friendly
on-board service, flight flexibility and of
course, an affordable air ticket.
“Our customer care philosophy is
built around these four areas and are
the reasons why 40 per cent of our
customers are repeat Zoom passengers
or referrals and why we have been able
to expand our transatlantic service every
year.”
Zoom’s flexible booking system
allows passengers to buy one-way tickets
and travel without any restrictions,
such as staying over a Saturday night.
Additionally, Zoom allows customers to
fly into one of its European destinations
and home from another without
additional fees or charges.

flyzoom.com.

For travellers looking to get far off
the beaten track this summer,
a rare Arctic expedition may fit
the bill.
“All voyages to our planet’s polar
regions are special, but the Arctic Islands
expedition visits places that few other
people will ever see,” said Pat Shaw,
president of Connecticut-based Quark
Expeditions. “This voyage is offered only
once or twice a decade.”
The 2008 Arctic Islands voyage runs
from July 21 to August 6. The expedition
will include shore landings in:
• Franz Josef Land, a former Soviet
“national security zone,” off-limits
to foreigners until recently;
• Svalbard archipelago, the world’s
northernmost inhabited land (land
that humans share with polar
bears);
• NortheastGreenlandNational Park,
a UNESCO Biosphere reserve larger
than the state of Texas.
Over the course of the voyage,
travellers will visit known habitat of
polar bears, whales, seals, Arctic foxes,
walrus and reindeer. The trip includes
an overnight stop in Helsinki, Finland,
known as “the Belle of the Baltics.”
The expedition is offered on Kapitan
Khlebnikov, a helicopter-equipped, polar-
class icebreaker. Khlebnikov carries only
108 guests. The ship’s two helicopters
are used for ice reconnaissance, aerial
sightseeing and shore excursions.
Between landings, guests can socialize
in the ship’s lounge and bar, heated
indoor swimming pool, exercise room
and sauna.

In celebration of B.C.’s 150th year,
YVR’s landscaping team is planting
150 cherry trees at YVR in 2008.
Landscapers have already planted 18
Akebono cherry trees and 15 Kwanzan
cherry trees by Templeton Road and
Grant McConachie Way.
Akebono trees, commonly known as
Daybreak cherry trees, typically blossom
in late March with a shell pink flower,
fading to nearly white.
The Kwanzan cherry tree is the most
widely planted cherry tree in Vancouver
and typically flowers in late April or May
with pink and purple flowers.
YVR’s cherry trees will be joined
by an additional 220 flowering trees,
including dogwoods, to be planted along
the same corridor this spring.
The Airport Authority’s
comprehensive landscaping program
features a four-season effect that will
grow and evolve over time. By the end of
2009, more than 1,000 plants, including
magnolia, plum and dogwood trees,
evergreens, poplars and ground cover
will have been planted to beautify the
land surrounding Grant McConachie Way
and along the new Canada Line route.
Stands of conifers and groves of trees will
supplement masses of seasonal shrubs
and grasses that will frame stunning
views of the North Shore Mountains.
Planting techniques will help to integrate
the Canada Line more naturally with Sea
Island’s estuary landscape.
So when you’re driving along Grant
McConachie Way toward YVR, enjoy the

New service helps with overseas travel trauma
From Terminal 5 chaos at
Heathrow to violence in Oaxaca
City, today’s globetrotter can
encounter a myriad of emergencies,
often complicated by language barriers.
That’s why BCAA Travel, one of the
largest travel agencies in B.C., is offering
customers a new 24-hour Traveller’s
Helpline, putting them in toll-free touch
with professional travel assistance,
anytime, anywhere in the world.
Following are some of the scenarios
that BCAA’s new service can counsel
customers on.
• A civil unrest or natural disaster.
In the event of a disaster, pay close
attention to your personal security
and monitor media for updates on
the situation. Keep a low profile,
avoid protests and large gatherings
and maintain contact with your
family to inform them of your
situation. Canadians are encouraged
to sign-up with the Registration of
Canadians Abroad (ROCA) service
to be contacted and assisted by
government officials during an
emergency.
• There’s no record of a reservation
you’ve made. Arrive at the hotel
or the car-rental counter with a
confirmation number and a printout
of your reservation. If there’s no
evidence of your booking, think
about how it was made—third party
or in a spouse’s name—and ask the
front desk clerk to search again. If
nothing turns up and you’ve booked
through BCAA Travel, their 24-hour
Traveller’s Helpline will provide
assistance. Confirming reservations
and special request a few days
before arrival (late arrival, non-
smoking room, car seat), can help
prevent mishaps.
• Yourflighthasbeencancelled.The

rebook.
• You’ve lost your passport. Notify
your consulate immediately and

passport is handed in. To replace
your passport, you will need to
establish your identity. One idea is to
make digital copies of your driver’s

files to an account you can access
through the Web. Also, leave paper
copies with a family member.

Mexicana, the leading carrier in
Mexico and Central America, is to join
the oneworld airline alliance. At the same
time, Mexicana’s low-cost subsidiary
Click Mexicana also will join the alliance
as an affiliate member.
Their joining process is expected to
take 12 to 18 months to complete, with
Iberia supporting Mexicana through
these tasks, as its prime oneworld
sponsor, assisted by American Airlines.
For Mexicana, joining oneworld will
strengthen its competitive offering and
its financial position.
For oneworld, adding Mexicana will
expand the alliance’s network in Mexico
and Central America, and enable it to
build further on its airline grouping
serving Latin America.
Oneworld is already the only global
alliance with any airline members
based in South America--through LAN
Airlines and its sisters LAN Argentina,
LAN Ecuador and LAN Peru. American
Airlines is the leading airline serving the
region internationally, and Iberia is the
leading carrier between Latin America
and Europe.
Mexicana’s addition to oneworld
comes after a year that has seen the
alliance complete its biggest expansion
drive, with 11 airlines joining in 2007—
Japan Airlines, Malév Hungarian Airlines
and Royal Jordanian as full members
and, as affiliates, LAN Argentina, LAN
Ecuador, Dragon air and five other
carriers in the Japan Airlines group.
Mexicana’s invitation to join
oneworld was sealed at a ceremony
last month in Los Angeles, attended by
its chief executive officer Manuel Borja
with his counterparts from all 10 of
oneworld’s established member airlines
and oneworld managing partner John
McCulloch.
Mexicana is the biggest non-U.S.
airline operating at Los Angeles, which
is its biggest hub outside Mexico.
With the alliance’s existing members
serving 11 points in Mexico, Mexicana’s
addition will expand to 35 points the
alliance’s network in Mexico, which is the
world’s 11th most populous country, the
12th biggest economy and the seventh
most popular tourist destination,
attracting more than 20-million foreign
visitors a year.
Oneworld’s existing members already
serve almost 110 airports throughout
Latin America. Mexicana’s addition will
extend that to more than 130.
In the months ahead, Mexicana will
adapt key internal process to conform
with oneworld’s requirements, link its
IT systems to those of its oneworld
partners and carry out an extensive
employee training and communications
programmes to ensure that its staff
worldwide are ready to provide
oneworld’s customer services and
benefits.
Once all its pre-joining
requirements are sufficiently
progressed, an exact date in 2009
will be confirmed for it to join.
Mexicana provides 11 non-stop
flights per week to Mexico City from
Vancouver International Airport.

luggage is destroyed or lost, you

to proceed before leaving the

• You’vebeen a victimof crime. If
you have been assaulted, robbed or
threatened with violence, contact
local authorities immediately. At
the same time, you should report
the matter to the nearest Canadian

• You’re really sick. At that
point, you’ll realize the value of
travel medical insurance. Trip
cancellation or trip interruption
insurance will compensate you for
lost monies if you’re too sick to
begin your travels or need to return

“We not only want to help our
customers before their trip, but
during and after as well,” said BCAA

“Obviously we want to mitigate any
foreseen problems before they go, but
sometimes travel plans don’t always
work out perfectly. That’s where
BCAA’s 24-hour Traveller’s Helpline
can make a real difference—it gives
travellers the tools to nip the problem

Last month, Air New Zealand had
confirmation from Boeing that it
can expect a delay in the delivery
of its first Boeing 787-9 aircraft.
Boeing had announced in January
that the first flight of the 787 had been
moved from the end of the first quarter
of 2008 to around the end of the second
quarter to provide additional time to
complete assembly of the first airplane.
Air New Zealand has eight 787-9
aircraft on order, with delivery of the
first initially expected around the end
of 2010, and all aircraft to be delivered
by late 2013.
The delivery of the first aircraft is
now likely in early 2012.
As a result of the delay, Air
New Zealand will be entering into
compensation discussions with Boeing.
“While disappointed, Air New
Zealand has retained sufficient flexibility
in its existing portfolio of leased and
owned aircraft to ensure no capacity
shortfall arises during this period,” said
Air New Zealand chief financial officer
Rob McDonald. “However, we are yet to
determine if there will be any impact
on our network expansion plans. We
are obviously very disappointed that
in the current environment of high jet
fuel prices, we will not be able to take
advantage of the significantly improved
economics that this aircraft will provide
in the timeframes we initially expected.”
Air New Zealand also has four 777-
300ER aircraft on order from Boeing,
which will be delivered in 2010 and 2011.
Their delivery remains on schedule and
will allow Air New Zealand to continue
to grow capacity over this period as
planned.
Boeing delays 787 deliveryAround the world, 25 Boeing 787 airplanes are in various stages of production.
This number includes the static and fatigue airframes, which will not be delivered to customers. Since its launch in April 2004 the 787 Dreamliner has amassed nearly 900
firm orders valued at US$151-billion from 58 airlines.

According to China’s government
news agency, Xinhua, China has
established Commercial Aircraft
Corp. to build regional commercial jets,
with a goal of eventually reducing the
country’s reliance on Boeing and Airbus
for jumbo jets.
Shanghai-based, the company has a
capitalization of 19-billion yuan, or $2.72-
billion, with the central government and
the Shanghai government being among
the major shareholders, along with
China Aviation Industry Corp. I and
China Aviation Industry Corp. II, China’s
two main aircraft manufacturing and
servicing companies.
China Aviation Industry Corp. I
unveiled a 90-seat ARJ21-700 last year,
which would be the first regional jet
developed and produced by China. It is to
be test flown later this year and deliveries
are scheduled to begin in 2009.
General Electric’s aircraft leasing
arm said in March that it had signed
a preliminary agreement to buy five
ARJ21s, the first order from a major
foreign customer.
There are total orders for about
181 ARJ21s, almost all from Chinese
carriers.
Chinese airlines, which Airbus estimates
will need about 2,650 new passenger jets in
the next 20 years, have been placing large
orders with Boeing and Airbus in recent
years to help keep pace with the country’s
rapid economic growth.

Most people are familiar with
the influenza virus, which is
known to be contagious and
sometimes deadly.
There is another ‘virus,’ termed
“affluenza,” which is perhaps less well
known, but shares the same contagious
and painful symptoms. A British
psychologist, Oliver James, coined the
term to describe a “contagious middle-
class ‘virus’ causing anxiety, depression,
addiction and ennui,” which stems from
a hunger for more money, and for more
possessions. According to James, those
with affluenza value the style and brand
of a product more than substance or
quality.
This ‘virus’ tends to be more prevalent
in the teenage to 40-plus age groups, but
can be found in all demographics.
Affluenza is the product of a society
where advertising and hype leads one
to believe that happiness will only be
achieved when the latest and most
up-to-date equipment, car, or clothes are
acquired. Many in our society have fallen
for the idea that we should measure
our success by how much money
or possessions we have managed to
accumulate. Gone are the days when
people were judged by their integrity,
their impact and their involvement and
contribution to the community. Often,
those with affluenza also have substantial
consumer debt because of shopping and
spending habits.
Affluenza is painful because buying
more and more products does not lead
to happiness or security—it simply
exacerbates the disease. The more goods
acquired, the greater the need. Affluenza
also complicates lives, since all those
cars, motorcycles, toys, etc., require time
and effort to look after.
Affluenza may have originated in the
U.S., but it has spread to Canada and
other countries. Interestingly, affluenza
is absent, for the most part, from poor,
developing countries.
Since we live in a consumer society it is
difficult to eliminate the affluenza virus,
but there are some ways to vaccinate
yourself and your family:
• Payasyougo:Donotpurchaseany
consumer items on credit. Period.
• Develop a culture of saving.
Encourage savings and investment
accounts, and learn the benefit of
saving today for future expenses.
• Fosteracultureofservice.Servingand
assisting others in your neighborhood
or family will help fight affluenza.
• Stop the flood of flyers/
advertisements: send them
immediately to the recycle bin.
• WatchlessTV.Readmore.Avoidthe
mall.
• Learn to say “no” to unneeded
purchases.
As a financial planner, I see many
families battling the affluenza virus.
Unlike influenza, the affluenza virus is
one of choice. Those who ‘vaccinate’
themselves are usually resistant to the
virus, while those who don’t increasingly
become burdened with debt.
Peter Kutney is a financial planner with Partners in Planning Financial Services. He can be reached at (604) 438-1603, or [email protected].
