and tear, and that are not covered by the originalNew Vehicle Limited Warranty - such as brakepads, brake rotors, and wiper blade inserts - areincluded, provided wear and tear exceeds BMWspecifications. Any adjustments required due tonormal operating conditions are also included.See pages 5 - 8 of this booklet for additionalinformation.

    Maintenance Intervals

Time intervals should be followed using themaintenance interval as indicated by the BMWService Indicator lights on the check controlpanel in the dashboard.

This BMW Service and Warranty InformationBooklet should be presented to your BMW cen-ter when maintenance is required. Your BMWcenter will stamp this book documenting the ser-vices or maintenance performed.

Maintenance ProgramThe BMW Maintenance Program has beendevised with the following objectives: to maxi-mize vehicle safety, reliability, and resale value byminimizing breakdowns resulting from wear, and

    1

    6/54

minimizing cost and inconvenience by comput-

ing maintenance intervals based upon the spe-cific manner in which each individual vehicle isdriven.

Maintenance intervals on motor vehicles haveconventionally been specified based uponaccumulated mileage. However, the type ofdriving conditions has a major influence onroutine maintenance requirements; distancetraveled is only one of the significant factors.A vehicle driven for 50,000 miles of short tripsin the city with numerous cold starts, pro-longed periods of idling, stop-and-go driving, and high engine speeds during accelerationrequires morefrequentmaintenance intervals

than a vehicle driven for50,000 miles for longdistances at low engine speeds primarily atoperating temperature.

The advanced technologies at BMW have led tothe development of the unique BMW serviceinterval indicator which computes the actual opti-mum maintenance requirements based not onlyupon the accumulated mileage, but taking intoaccount important factors such as engine cool-ant temperatures, high or low engine speeds, short or long trip driving, and number of vehiclestarts. The maintenance interval may thereforebe maximized with considerable savings to own-ers of vehicles subjected to light duty.

The Service Interval Indicator consists of amileage reading, and the inscriptions OIL SER-VICE and INSPECTION.

Whenever the ignition is switched on, the displayshows the next scheduled type of service and theremaining distance until the service should beperformed. The distance is based on your drivingstyle.

If the maintenance interval has been exceeded, a-- symbol reminds you of the urgent need forservicing. In the interests of road safety and reli-ability, you should avoid driving your BMW

when the -- symbol is showing, and havethe

    essential maintenance work performed withoutdelay.

After each maintenance is performed the serviceindicator is reset in order to compute the nextservice interval.

If the Service Interval Indicator displays an illogi-cal reading, or if there is no display, consult aBMW center.

If the speedometer, tachometer or coolant tem-perature gauge should develop a fault, the ser-vice interval indicator will probably cease tooperate correctly as well, since it depends oncorrect speed, distance and temperature read-

ings. The fault must be located and rectified by aBMW center.

A detailed list of all maintenance operationsincluded in each of the elements of the BMWMaintenance Program is found on pages 3 - 13.These elements are as follows:

Quality Certification I will be performed by yourselling center and certified on the following page.

The performance of certain subsequent mainte-nance elements, as required by the BMW NewVehicle Limited Warranty, will be specified atintervals computed by the BMW service intervalindicator as follows:

Oil Service: Engine oil changed with theengine at operating temperature.

Note: change oil at least once a year.

Your BMW is factory-equipped with a newly-developed synthetic engine oil. At the time ofthe printing of this booklet the only approvedengine oils are: Castrol TWS Motorsport SAE10W-60 Synthetic, or Castrol Formula RS10W-60 Synthetic (BMW part number 07 51 0009 420).

BMW recommends that you check engine oillevel whenever fuel is added to your vehicle.

Inspection I: Major vehicle maintenance as

specified in the following pages under Inspec-tion I.

Inspection II: Additional major vehicle mainte-nance as specified in the following pages underInspection II.

The following maintenance elements must beperformed at the mileage/time stated (time inter-vals begin from the vehicles production date):

Brake Fluid Service: Change brake fluid everytwo years.

Oxygen Sensor Service: The oxygen sensordeteriorates strictly on a mileage basis andmust therefore be replaced every 120,000miles to maximize vehicle fuel economy andminimize exhaust pollution. The replacement ofthe oxygen sensor is required under the termsof the applicable BMW emission system war-ranties.

Spark Plug Service: Replace spark plugs atevery Inspection 2.

The engine coolant has a lifetime rating and doesnot need to be changed.

For your convenience, you may also wish to haveyour BMW center perform any necessary opera-tions to fulfill any state inspection requirementsin your area concurrent with the maintenanceelements specified above during other repairs.

Make sure that confirmation of maintenancework is always entered in this Service and War-ranty Information Statement. You may need thisfor any warranty claims that become necessary, and later on as evidence that your car has beengiven the correct and regular maintenance thatjustifies its resale or trade-in value.

BMW has applied the most modern technologi-cal advances not only to the design and produc-tion of your vehicle, but also to computing of theoptimum maintenance interval for your type ofoperations and driving style. Your BMW centerhas made a substantial investment in uniqueBMW special service tools to enable his BMWfactory trained service technicians to performquality repairs on your BMW in minimal time.Your service technician looks forward to servingyour every service need and to help maximizeyour satisfaction with your BMW, its longevity, and resale value.

The engine in your Z4 M Coupe and Roadster isa race-bred engine design which includesincreased power output and maximum enginespeeds compared to conventional BMW Z4engines. The increased power output also affectsother major drivetrain components such as thetransmission and the rear axle differential. The1200 Mile Service requires changing the oil inthe engine and both the transmission and thedifferential.

    Unscheduled Maintenance

Only use fuels advertised to have adequatedetergency and low alcohol content. Use of fuelswith insufficient detergent and/or excess alcoholcan cause driveability problems that necessitatecleaning intake valves and fuel injection valves, and, when applicable, adjusting the engine idle.We suggest having this work performed by yourauthorized BMW center, perhaps while regularmaintenance is performed. Your BMW center canalso recommend a gasoline additive that will pro-vide sufficient detergency. While this recom-mended unscheduled maintenance is notrequired in order to maintain the emission war-ranty, cleaning of intake valves or, when applica-

ble, fuel injection valves, or adjustment of engineidle, necessitated by use of inappropriate fuel, isnot covered by warranty because no defect inmaterial or workmanship or component failure isinvolved.

    Special Note

Maintenance items and schedules stated hereinreflect the combined recommendations for all2007 Z4 M Coupe and Roadster models are sub-ject to change. The most current maintenancerecommendations are available from your autho-rized BMW center.

    Battery Care

If your car is driven only for short distances ofless than 10 miles over a prolonged period oftime, without an occasional drive at highwayspeeds, the engines charging system will notmaintain the battery. Insufficient use of the vehi-cle could result in short term starting problemsand in the long term could damage the battery.

In case the car is not operated for more than fourweeks it is advisable to:

    a. consider using a proper trickle charger, follow-ing the charger manufacturers instructions, tomaintain the batterys state of charge; or

    b. consult your BMW center regarding batteryremoval. Once removed, the battery must becharged and stored in a cool, dry place whereit can be protected from freezing. If the batterywill be stored for over 3 months, it must berecharged every 3 months, or else it willbecome damaged and useless.

Please consult with your BMW center for furtherguidance and information.

    Corrosion Protection

Extensive corrosion protection measures imple-mented by BMW now make it possible to offer a

twelve-year limited anti-corrosion warrantyagainst rust perforation on your vehicle providedthat the vehicle is maintained in accordance withthe provisions of the New Vehicle Limited War-ranty as outlined in the Warranty Section of thisStatement (page 29).

The major degree of corrosion protection is dueto the electrophoretic dip painting process whichcathodically deposits paint particles on all bodyparts, attracting paint particles into the minutestcavities or seams. Body parts are designed toprovide optimum corrosion protection.

During manufacture, exterior body parts receive

an additional corrosion protection coat. Hood, trunk, doors and other body parts with metalfolds are coated with PVC and sealed from theoutside.

All floor panels receive a resilient coating of PVCfor maximum protection against damage due tostones, etc.

Corrosion protection materials tested over manyyears are applied to the surfaces of cavities andto the entire underside of the vehicle during andafter assembly.

Requirements for maintaining the twelve yearunlimited mileage anti-corrosion warranty areoutlined in the Warranty Section of this State-ment (page 31).

    Restoring corrosion protection

Please take care that anti-corrosion material isreplaced when your car is repaired after body orchassis damage.

BMW will not accept any liabilityfor any partsand accessories not approved by BMW.

    Underbody maintenance

The underbody has to be cleaned at least once ayear, in spring, with plain water in order to removemud, chemical sediments and other deposits. Ifthose materials are not removed, corrosion (rust)will occur.

Your BMW center will do this anti-corrosion ser-vice for you.

    WARNING

Do not apply additional undercoating or rust-proofing on or near the exhaust manifold, exhaustpipes, catalytic converter or heat shields. Duringdriving, thesubstanceusedforundercoatingcouldoverheat and cause a fire.
