    class of 2006

    Currently in medical school at

    the Medical University of South

    Carolina

    A biochemistry undergraduate

    at Clemson, Ahmed served as

    president of the Student Senate

    and founded a chapter of

    Amnesty International. In the

    summer of 2007, he volunteered

    for several weeks at a medical

    center in Akot, South Sudan,one of the most desolate and

    war-torn regions in Africa.

    Ahmed worked with a group

    to vaccinate more than 8,000

    Sudanese against meningitis. The

    experience greatly affected him.

    sChristen Smith, class of 2007

    Currently serving in Peace Corps

    in Ethiopia

    As a Clemson student, Christen

    focused on international service

    with internships in Tanzania

    and Mexico. She also led an

    effort to create a campus

    chapter of an international

    childrens medical relief group.

    That pioneering commitment

    to global health has continued

    with her placement in the Peace

    Corps. Christen is currently

    working as a community health

    adviser in the northern Amhara

    in medicine to inectious

    diseases. The problems that

    were most prevalent there

    malaria, tuberculosis, inant

    mortality are unheard o

    Katherine Chisholm, class of 2005

    Graduated Emory University in 2007 with a masters in global public health

    Katherine works with the Rwanda Zambia HIV Research Group (RZHRG) focusing

    on heterosexual HIV transmission and prevention in cohabiting African couples.

    Katherine works with a program that offers counseling to couples and conducts

    research on HIV transmission and vaccine trials. In her short time in this role, shes

    already seen impressive results.

    Because 60 percent o new HIV inections in Arica are acquired rom a spouse, this population represents the largest ri
