Dear Friends, Most of us probably have a pretty good idea of what our dream holiday would be like. What we wish for may vary from person to person, some of us may want sunshine and others can’t stand the heat, but I suspect there is one common characteristic……we want to determine the way things are on our holiday. There are enough times in our ordinary lives when we have to put up with what comes our way, that make us treasure the ability to choose what happens on our holidays. This year the weather has been totally out of keeping with the atmosphere that we like to associate with the summer holiday season. Rain, rain and more rain have made us realise that these days we can’t take anything for granted about the weather. We may be able to predict with great accuracy when a storm is coming in… but we are becoming reacquainted with the sometimes frightening power of nature. For a long time we have assumed that we are masters of our own destiny – we choose what we want to do and then do it. Perhaps we need to realise that man is not all-powerful and that we actually live in this world by the grace of God. The struggle, which informs and holds together much of what is contained in the Old Testament part of the Bible, is the struggle to understand the nature and mystery of God. You don’t have to turn many pages before you come to the story of Noah and that judgemental flood. But note how the story ends. God promises, never again shall there be a flood to destroy the earth. Yes, the Bible does talk often and with great honesty about human sinfulness, but it also tells us with ever-increasing confidence, the truth that John expresses
with great joy in the New Testament: God is love. There is absolutely nothing that I can do which would make God love me more
than He does already.
And equally, there is nothing that I can do that will make God love me less. Like the sun in the sky, which is always there even if it’s hidden by clouds, God’s love is constant. The problem is not with him, but with our tendency to try to find shade – or to hide from the sun. God’s invitation to us is to come and find all the fun, excitement, light, and warmth that we’re missing! With every good wish,
The Revd. Sue Wilson

Alpha What is it? The Alpha course is an opportunity for anyone to explore the Christian faith. It’s relaxed, low key, friendly and fun!
There is a meal together at the beginning of each session which gives an opportunity to get to know each other.
Listen, learn, discuss and discover…and ask anything! Alpha is a place where no question is too simple or too hostile.
What’s involved? The Alpha course consists of a series of talks looking at topics such as, ‘What happens when we die?’ ‘Is forgiveness possible?’ ‘What relevance does Jesus have for our lives today?’
After a DVD talk we divide into groups to talk about what we’ve heard. Who is Alpha for? Alpha is for everyone, especially:
Ø Those wanting to investigate Christianity Ø New Christians Ø Those who are Christian and who want to brush up on the basics
What will it cost? There is no charge for the Alpha course, although there will be the opportunity to give a contribution towards the food. Where will it be held?
Ø On Tuesday evenings, 7.15 pm until 9.35 pm in Heversham at ‘Mugisha’, Woodhouse Lane.
Ø On Wednesday lunchtimes, 12.15 pm until 2.35 pm at the Church Centre in Milnthorpe
When will it take place?
Heversham: Tuesday October 2nd and then weekly finishing on Tuesday 11th December 2007 Milnthorpe: Wednesday October 3rd and then weekly finishing on Wednesday 12th December 2007 For further information please contact: The Revd Sue Wilson 015395 63125 or look at the notices in both St. Peter’s Church and St. Thomas’ Church.

Saint Thomas’ Church: Milnthorpe Special Services, Events and News
We start October with our Harvest Thanksgiving Service and the Bishop’s Harvest for the Hungry Appeal. We have so much for which to be thankful here – let us not forget those in other countries with so little.
St Thomas’ Church celebrates its 170th birthday this month!
It’s not quite the time to match the year long celebration of events that marked the 150th anniversary…we’ll have to wait another five years for that!
Nevertheless, those of you with long memories will no doubt remember some of the events… the dinners, entertainments, flower festivals, treasure hunts and carnival children’s holiday week. We’ll have to rely on the photograph albums to jog our memories for the rest.
However, we do want to thank God for all the stories and happenings that have made up the history of the last 170 years and for the way in which He has led us on such a fascinating journey throughout this time.
Anniversaries aren’t just an opportunity to focus on the past, looking forward is important too and so it is with real thanks for the past and excitement for the future that we have a United Service at St. Thomas’s on the 30th September at 11 o’clock. Mary Davidson
The meeting of Milnthorpe -with -Heversham Mothers Union opened with contemplative music, followed by the hymn “Be still for the presence of the Lord”, and meditation on the Lords Prayer- being the theme of the service led by Joan Ellam, with a Bible reading by Judy Dyer. Branch leader Joan Ellam announced that she was retiring after 3 years leadership – Judy Dyer will also be retiring, as secretary. Are there any volunteers for the posts??
The new theme for the years programme is “Time for Relationship”. PLEASE NOTE: Meetings for October and November will be held at Heversham due to the Alpha programme at Milnthorpe.
Diary of events: October 26th A preparation meeting for the Woman’s World Day of Prayer (March) will be held at Holy Trinity Church, Kirkland, Kendal - all welcome,
November 22nd - Members’ visit Shap branch for their meeting at 2.00 pm
December 5 th -The Chr is tmas lunch will be held at Crooklands Hotel.

Emmaus Nurture
Do you want to meet with others and learn more about your faith? In October and November we are planning arrange these group(s) to meet in peoples houses. There is more information below about the course. If you would like to attend or could offer your home please sign up on the sheets provided in St John’s.
The Christian life is a journey. The Emmaus Nurture material is the ideal course for interested enquirers who want to learn about the faith in company with others it is also a good course for established Christians who want to journey again and discover with others why and what they believe. The course is split into 3 parts and in Levens we will do part one in October and November, part 2 after Christmas and part 3 after Easter. The sessions are: PART 1 : WHAT CHRISTIANS BELIEVE God is there and he matters; we need God in our lives; Jesus – his ministry and death; the Resurrection of Jesus; the Holy Spirit; becoming a Christian. PART 2 : HOW CHRISTIANS GROW Learning to pray; reading the Bible; belonging to the Church; sharing Holy Communion. PART 3 : LIVING THE CHRISTIAN LIFE Living God's way; serving the Lord; your money and your life; learning to love; sharing the faith.
What can I expect to find in each session? Each session includes Bible study, input and discussion, group exercises, meditations, ways to put faith into practice, and prayers.

St John’s Levens PCC meeting 29/08 spent some time on plans for the now-in-existence Kent Estuary Group and its inaugural service on Saturday December 1st at Arnside. We looked at our progress on Survival to Revival (or S2R) and noted intentions for the future. Recent activities were reviewed and Harvest, Advent and Christmas services planned in outline. It was also agreed to have an All Souls Day Service on the evening of Friday 2 November* .Every one involved in the Boon Day spring cleaning in early August was thanked again. We also considered the possibility of recording services in church for later use with people who were unable to get to church – practicalities and costs are to be looked into. D Hughes Gain

All welcome to come and ask for names of loved ones to be remembered – see notice in church .
Levens Village Plan Update The questionnaires have been circulated to all the households in Levens Parish, these were very well received and the level of response has been high. We now have the onerous task of inputting the data gathered onto the analysis software. In addition to the household questionnaire:- a young persons social event is being held to gain the views of all 11-17 year olds within the Parish and also a Business questionnaire is to be circulated to all businesses within the Parish. A school project was carried out earlier in the year to obtain the views of the under 11s within Levens Parish. We would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone involved so far, for their assistance with the Levens Village Plan. We will keep informed over coming months of any further updates, in the meantime, if you have any queries, please contact us (see notice boards for contact details). Many thanks - Levens Village Plan Committee
