2006 SEASON PREVIEW2006 SEASON PREVIEW2006 SEASON PREVIEW2006 SEASON PREVIEW2006 SEASON PREVIEW

The Northern University volleyball team will be looking tobounce back from an overall slate in 2005 of 15-12 and 12-6 in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference(GLIAC) which was good for a third-place tie in theGLIAC North with Ferris State. The Wildcats werebounced by Northwood in the GLIAC Tournament. Theteam this year will have almost a complete makeover. There is optimism in the air that the ‘Cats have theconfidence to move up in the GLIAC standings.

NMU’s team make up will be on the young side. The‘Cats will not have a senior on the roster, but will have twojuniors. Three sophomores along with 11 newcomers willtilt the balance of the team. Missing from the 2005 teaminclude Holly Greenamyre, Nicole Hintze and AndreaSmith. Greenamyre had 259 kills in 2005 which was goodfor third on the squad. She led the ‘Cats with 73 totalblocks as her 14 block solos tied her for team-honors andher 59 block assists led the team. Smith had a team-high345 kills last year (4.01 kills/game). Hintze, the 2005GLIAC Freshman of the Year, was second on the team in2005 with 315 kills (3.28 kills/game) and 24 service aces.As a team in 2005 the ‘Cats were second in the GLIAC inassists with 1,327 (13.54 assists/game) and third in killswith 1,463 (14.93 kills/game). “We have confidence andpotential,” head coach, Qi Wang, said. “We feel good sofar.”

Brittany McGowan and Megan Elliott are the elderplayers on the squad. Bothare entering the 2006campaign as the two lonejuniors on the roster.McGowan, an honorablemention All-GLIAC selection, led the 2005 ‘Cats with 815assists (9.70 assist/game) andhad 265 digs. Elliott wassecond on the team with 25service aces. Northern willutilize a two-setter system.“Brittany is one of our topsetters,” Wang said.

Sam Schulte, Second-team All-GLIAC pick, Sam Schulte, leads the sophomores. She registered 241 kills in 2005,which placed her fourth on the team (2.77 kills/game). Shealso had 68 total blocks, which was good for secondbehind Greenamyre. Schulte tied Greenamyre in block

solos and had 54 block assists.“Upperclassmen can helpcoaches,” Wang said. RachelMartinez and BreanneZaremba round out thesecond-year players for the‘Cats. Martinez was secondon the team last year with 284assists. Zaremba had 39block assists, which was goodfor third on the team.

A large class of newcomersjoin the program for theseason. Twelve freshmen areon the roster. Eleven players should see some action, oneof the player will redshirt the season. Because of an injury,Heidi Breitenfeldt , will redshirt the 2006 season.According to Wang the spots are wide open as thenewcomers will have to prove themselves. The followingnewcomers will be trying to garner some playing time. ErinGallagher (OH/DS), Katt Garvick (OH/MH/RH), AmyAndersen-Goldsworthy (RH/MH), Barbara Homann (MH/RH), Becky Jarosch (OH/MH), Mandie Meyer (OH),Aimee Mohr (S/DS), Caitlin O’Hara (MH), Kate Olechny(OH), Cassie Osiecki (L/DS) and Callie Youngman (S/RH).According to Wang it will be a challenge to get thenewcomers in the mix by the time conference play comesaround.

NMU jumps into GLIAC play by hosting Michigan Techthe first Tuesday in September. NMU will be looking tomove up in the standings this year. After Wang’s first tourof the GLIAC last year he still thinks it is a very toughconference. “It is one of the toughest conferences in thenation,” Wang said. “We want to do our best and see howfar we can go.”

The ‘Cats will be young, but they will gain valuable timeon the court. A couple of the youngsters are going to haveto take a giant step and contribute right away. If the ‘Catscan achieve that, the team will be in good shape.

The Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference(GLIAC) was founded in June 1972. During the two yearsprevious to the GLIAC’s founding, several attempts weremade to create a new NCAA College Division conference. In1971, the Great Lakes Athletic Conference was formed, butplans for the new conference were put on hold, and several ofthe participating schools subsequently withdrew their support.

The idea did not die, though, and since 1972-73 the GLIAChas been a leader in the advancement and promotion ofintercollegiate athletics for men and women.

The GLIAC features a membership of 13 schools: AshlandUniversity, Ferris State University, Gannon University, GrandValley State University, University of Findlay, Hillsdale Col-lege, Lake Superior State University, Mercyhurst College,Michigan Technological University, Northern Michigan Uni-versity, Northwood University, Saginaw Valley State Univer-sity, and Wayne State University.

Overall the GLIAC conducts championships in 21 sports,11 for men and 10 for women. The policy-making body is theGLIAC Executive Council, which is comprised of threerepresentatives from each member institution – its director ofathletics, faculty representative, and senior woman adminis-trator. Final approval of all GLIAC legislation is required by theCouncil of GLIAC Presidents.

As GLIAC commissioner, Tom Brown is responsible forall conference administration. He is beginning his 14th seasonas the conference’s fifth commissioner.

Northern Michigan (27-9) emerged onto the Division II women’svolleyball national scene by qualifying for the NCAA Tournament for thefirst time in school history. Jim Moore regrouped from a 9-23 campaign inhis first season as the Wildcat coach in 1989 to guide Northern to a berth twoyears later in an NCAA regional in Warrensburg, Mo. NMU did not wasteits opportunity as it defeated Missouri-St. Louis (3-0) and host CentralMissouri State (3-1) to advance to its first Elite Eight. The ’Cats wereeliminated, however, by eventual national runner-up Portland State in thequarterfinals by a 3-1 margin.

NCAA QuarterfinalistsAmarillo, Texas

Following their inaugural appearance in the NCAAs, the ’Cats (34-4)thirsted for more success and fell just short of winning their first national title. The journey began by hosting an NCAA regional and defeating GLIAC-foeFerris State, 3-0. The ’Cats met Northern Colorado in the quarterfinals andfought off a shaky second game to register a 3-1 triumph. In the semifinals,Northern dominated defending national champion West Texas A&M witha 3-0 shellacking. In the finals, an epic battle ensued as NMU surged to a 2-1 game lead and a 6-2 point advantage in the fourth game only to see the hostPortland State Vikings rally to win the contest with a victory in the rally-scored fifth game by a 15-10 margin.

1992NCAA FinalistsPortland, Ore.

The heartbreak from 1992 carried over into the following year asvirtually the entire squad returned on a mission in its quest to win the nationaltitle. The Wildcats (38-1) became the first team ever to hold the No. 1 nationalranking for an entire season as it suffered only one blemish to its record. Thistime Northern would host the Elite Eight after dispatching arch-rivalMichigan Tech in the Great Lakes Regional. With a boisterous home crowdon its side, the ’Cats tookfull advantage of their fa-miliar surroundings with3-0 victories over New Ha-ven and Northern Colo-rado in the quarterfinalsand semifinals, respec-tively. NMU met Cal.-State Bakersfield in the fi-nals, which was coachedby eventual Wildcat headcoach Mark Rosen. TheRoadrunners had handedNorthern its only setbackof the season to snap theWildcats’ school-record28-game winning streak.CSUB came out firing witha 15-4 victory in the firstgame, but Northern recov-ered to capture the finalthree games – 15-5, 15-3,15-10 – and the first NCAA title in a women’s team sport in school history. An Elite Eight record of 6,825 fans turned out for the three-day affair, including 3,112 for the championship match.

1993NCAA ChampionsMarquette, Mich.

With only one starter returning from the 1993 NCAA championshipsquad, not as much was expected from the ‘Cats (32-4). However, thedetermination and character from the previous two seasons carried over andcontinued NMU’s stay as a major factor on the national scene. Under first-year head coach Mark Rosen, NMU defeated Wayne State (3-0) in the firstround of the Great Lakes Regional before upsetting host and top-seedMichigan Tech to advance to the Elite Eight for a fourth straight year. The’Cats then defeated New Haven (3-0) and Central Missouri State (3-0) toreach the finals versus host and No. 1-ranked Cal.-State Bakersfield in arematch of the previous year’s national championship match. The Roadru-nners started strongas they did in the1993 matchup witha 15-8 game one vic-tory. But NMU ral-lied from a 7-1 defi-cit in game two andproceeded to cap-ture the next twogames (15-13, 15-8). In game four, the’Cats held a 14-6lead before finallywinning matchpoint after CSUBforced 12 sideoutsand had rallied to within 14-13. With the title, Northern became only the thirdDivision II school ever to capture back-to-back national titles.

1994NCAA ChampionsBakersfield, Calif.

NMU (34-3) began the campaign as the nation’s No. 1-ranked team inits quest to become the first team ever to win three consecutive Division IInational championships. The Wildcats lost their No. 1 ranking with an early-season defeat at Barry (Fla.) University, but regrouped after a loss to CSU-Bakersfield to post the second-longest win streak in school history – 26matches. Northern defeated Michigan Tech (3-0) in the Great Lakes Regionalfor the third year in a row to advance to the Elite Eight for the fifth straightseason. The ’Cats downed West Virginia Wesleyan (3-0) and CentralMissouri State (3-0) to reach the finals against host and top-ranked Barry.NMU started strong with a 15-6 victory in the first game, but the Buccaneerswere too much to overcome as they posted a 3-1 victory on their homecourt. With their appearance in the finals, NMU became just the second programever to reach the national championship match in four consecutive seasons.

Vandament ArenaThe Vandament Arena is a volleyball-only facility, one of the finest in NCAA II, and is located inside NMU’s PEIF. The arena, which is named for formerNMU President William E. Vandament (1991-97), opened in 1995 and was officially dedicated in 1997. Vandament, an avid supporter of the Wildcatvolleyball team, was Northern’s president when the Wildcats won their national championships in 1993 and 1994.Since 1995, the Wildcats have posted a 123-17 record for a winning percentage of .878. Included in that total is part of a school-record 66-match homecourt winning streak, and part of a conference record 80-match string of home wins. The 1,500-seat arena features retractable bleachers on each side of the main court. When not used for volleyball matches, Vandament Arena has threebasketball/volleyball courts for student use.

Physical Education Instructional Facility (PEIF)The PEIF, as it is more commonly called, houses the PEIF Pool, home to the NMU swimming and diving team, and Vandament Arena. Berry Events CenterThe Berry Events Center is a multifunctional venue and NMU’s newest athletic facility, which ishome of the Wildcat hockey, basketball and United States speedskating teams. The hockeyplayers and speedskaters compete on an Olympic-size ice sheet measuring 200 by 100 feet.Northern is one of two schools, Alaska Fairbanks being the other, in the Central CollegiateHockey Association with the larger ice sheet. The basketball team plays on protective flooring, placed over the ice in a process that takes aboutfive hours. During a basketball game seating for 500 fans is available courtside, while the entireseating capacity of the facility is 3,800.The Berry Events Center is named afterJohn W. Berry Jr., a 1971 NMU graduate, who donated $2 million to the project. Itwas opened in 1999. THE NORTHERN CAMPUS

Northern Michigan University has a campus that’s large enough to offer scenic

spaces and 50 quality facilities but is still small enough to keep everything

within walking distance.

Students can use the high-end spe-

cialty computer labs, the learning

resource center, the Headstart

classroom, the theatre, the speech

and hearing clinic, the student art gallery, the university museum, two on-

campus radio stations, the public TV station, the Jacobetti Center for technical

programs, an observatory, and the

athletic facilities.

Northern’s campus is wired to state-of-the-art technology and the Internet and

also is completely wireless so students

can utilize their notebook computers

to the fullest extent.

Along with the academic facilities,

nine residence halls are organized into living areas called “houses,” which

include 40 to 45 students who actively shape their own living environments.

Four students share a suite, and all residence halls have great locations within

five minutes of eating, learning and studying.

Possibly the most vital part of the campus is not its bricks and mortar but its people, particularly the outstanding faculty

members of which more than 70 percent hold a doctorate or the highest

degree in their respective field. The class ratio is about 24 students to one

faculty member and teaching is our faculty’s No. 1 priority.
