After a one-year absence, the collegiate women’s volleyball program thathas become a fixture of the NCAA Final Four was back in the spotlight. In2006, the Stanford Cardinal made a 16th Final Four appearance andadvanced to its 12th national title match, figures unparalleled by any pro-gram in the country. The Cardinal finished the season with a No. 2 nation-al ranking, a 30-4 record and an unprecedented 10th Pac-10 title, all col-lected while playing 15 matches against ranked opponents and 22 matchesagainst eventual NCAA Tournament participants.

Stanford was nearly perfect in the preseason, going 9-1 with a small hic-cup against BYU in the Cougars’ home tournament. With the exception ofthat match, the Cardinal entered the Pac-10 season having not lost a singlegame and was ready for the challenging conference season. Despite battlinga conference schedule that included five top-10 teams, the Cardinal cameout on top with a 16-2 Pac-10 record.

Stanford received an automatic bid to its 26th-straight NCAATournament, and eased past Sacramento State in the First Round in MaplesPavilion. In the Second Round, the squad won a thrilling five-game battlewith Missouri to advance to the Regional in Austin, Texas. In Austin,Stanford swept Bay Area rival Cal, before knocking off the Texas Longhorns

on their home court. The Cardinal routed defending National ChampionWashington in the NCAA semifinal, but fell 27-30, 30-26, 30-28, 30-27 toNebraska in the championship match.

Stanford had much to be proud of in 2006, however. Of the team’s 30wins, 25 were by 3-0 margins. The Cardinal produced four All-Americans,matching the highest single-season total in program history, with BrynKehoe, Cynthia Barboza, Foluke Akinradewo and Kristin Richards allreceiving the honor. Five players earned All-Conference recognition, andnine of the ten eligible team members earned Pac-10 All-Academic honors.

It was a record year for Richards, as the senior outside hitter finished hercareer ranked in the top-10 in program history in nine career categories. The Orem, Utah native shattered the program dig record, notching 1,597in her time on the Farm. She also graduated as one of the top five playersin kills, service aces and total attacks and found herself in 10 places on theStanford single-season charts. Akinradewo set a single-season hitting per-centage record with a .431 clip and Kehoe continued her climb to fourth onthe career assists chart. Barboza led the Cardinal in kills (463), service aces(48) and points (562.5).

At the end of the run, Stanford said goodbye to four outstanding seniors:Richards, Nji Nnamani, Lizzie Suiter and Michelle Mellard. The foursomefinished their careers having helped Stanford to two Final Four appear-ances, a 111-23 record and the 2004 National Championship.

In 2007, there are some new and excitingchanges being made in the Stanford AthleticDepartment. One of those is in the area of indi-vidual sport program fundraising. StanfordAthletics is in the process of providing Women’sVolleyball, as well as all of the other varsity pro-grams in the department, full operating budgetsfor the first time in almost 10 years. Our newbudget will include all of the components neces-sary for our programs to compete for conferenceand national titles each and every year. Because ofthis, Women’s Volleyball will no longer fundraisefor our basic operating budgets effective fiscalyear 2008 (September 1, 2007).

Women’s Volleyball’s new budget will be fund-ed in large part by the Buck/Cardinal Club, andthis will allow us to focus more time and energy

on coaching and recruiting instead of onfundraising for our basic operating expenses.

Instead of receiving solicitations through theQuick Set Club, donors will now receive a singlesolicitation from the Buck/Cardinal Club. Donorsto the Buck/Cardinal Club will also now receivebenefits such as improved seating, parking passes, and newsletters. By giving a gift to theBuck/Cardinal Club, you will be helping to pro-vide Women’s Volleyball, and all of Stanford’sother programs, with the budget resources weneed on an annual basis.

At the time of your donation, you will have thechance to select Women’s Volleyball as your sportof preference, and by doing so, will continue toreceive communications from our program. TheQuick Set Club will still exist; we will continue tohost events such as the post game hospitality

room and barbeques, and continue our benefitschart, awarding benefits to donors who con-tribute at a certain level.

To supplement our budget support fromBuck/Cardinal, we will also fundraise on occasionfor special one-time projects that are not coveredin our new budget. We will do this through spe-cial events and/or donor outreach with the coop-eration of our Athletic Development Office.

This change is a very positive and exciting onefor our programs, and we hope you will continueto support Stanford Women’s Volleyball and all ofour fellow varsity sports, by giving to theBuck/Cardinal Club.
