Today marks the fi rst time that Ohio and Tennessee-Martin have met on the gridiron.

RECENT MEETINGS

• This is the fi rst meeting ever between the Bobcats and Skyhawks in football.

THE OHIO VS. TENNESSEE-MARTIN SERIES

• Jason Simpson is in his fi rst season not only as the Skyhawks’ head coach, but also as a head coach at the collegiate level. Simpson was the offensive coordinator at Tennessee-Chattanooga last season.

• UT Martin is coming off its fi rst winning season since 1993, fi nishing the 2005 campaign at 6-5.• Tennessee-Martin fi nished 4-4 in the OVC last season, good enough for 4th place in the conference.

It was the highest the Skyhawks had fi nished since 1995. • Tennessee-Martin returns many of its major contributors from 2005, including leading rusher,

junior Donald Chapman., a 2005 Lindy’s All-American. The Marietta, Ga. native rushed for 1,396 yards and scored 16 touchdowns. Chapman looks to continue a streak from the previous two seasons, setting the Skyhawk single-season rushing record with 1,084 yards in 2004, and then breaking his mark in 2005.

• Senior Taurean Stephens was Tennessee-Martin’s leading receiver in 2005. He will try to become Tennessee-Martin’s all-time leader in receptions and receiving yards during the 2006 season. He is currently second in receptions and third in receiving yards.

• The Bobcats are the third Division I-A team the Skyhawks have faced. The other two teams were Western Michigan and Arkansas State.

2006 OPPONENT BREAKDOWN

• Ohio is the home state of 12 players on the 2006 Tennessee-Martin football roster, the most of any state outside of Tennessee.

• Eleven of the 12 Ohio natives are from Cincinnati. The only player not to hail from Cincinnati is Kevin Rondo, a junior safety from Columbus.

• Two sets of Ohio high school teammates will square off against one another. Bobcat senior linebacker Michael Graham (Cincinnati, Ohio) and UT Martin senior defensive end Zach Kleinfelder both played scholastically at St. Xavier High School. Bobcat rookie kicker Matt Schulte (Cincinnati, Ohio) and Skyhawk sophomore linebacker Tirrdell Byrd each played at Colerain High School.

• Ohio has one player from Tennessee, senior quarterback Austen Everson (Brentwood, Tenn.). Everson will have one former high school teammate on the opposing sideline. Tennessee-Martin’s Adam Hansen, a junior offensive lineman, is also from Brentwood and attended Brentwood High School.

HOMECOMING FOR SEVERAL SKYHAWKS

• Ohio cornerbacks coach David Brown will participate in his fi rst game as a member of the Bobcats’s staff when they play UT Martin. Brown joined the Bobcats last March after spending the last fi ve years at his alma mater, Cal Poly. The last two years he served as the Mustangs’ defensive coordinator.

• The Bobcats are hoping continuity on the sideline will aid in their improvement this season. The other eight assistants all return from 2005. It is the fi rst time in his career that the senior quarterback Austen Everson (Brentwood, Tenn.) will be using the same playbook.

BOBCATS EARN PRESEASON HONORS

• Since the start of the 2002 season, the Bobcats have played 44 games in which one team or the other has held the lead at halftime. In those games, the squad leading at intermission has won 37 times (.841).

• Ohio has won seven straight games when leading at halftime, including all four games last season. The last time the Bobcats could not hold a halftime lead was on Nov. 15, 2003 when Akron overcame a 21-14 halftime defi cit to win, 35-28.

• The Bobcats have lost 20 consecutive games when trailing at the half, including all seven of last season’s defeats. The last time Ohio won a game when trailing at halftime was against Akron on Nov. 9, 2002. Ohio trailed 10-0 at the break, but won the game, 27-10.

• The Bobcats are 1-1 when tied at halftime since the start of 2002.

QUICK STARTS IMPORTANT FOR BOBCATS

• The Bobcats return most of their statistical leaders from last season, including their leading rusher, passer, receiver and tackler.

• Not only are the leaders back, but most of the depth returns as well — - Ohio returns 96.8 percent of its rushing yards (1,854 of 1,915) - Ohio returns 97.9 percent of its passing yards (1,275 of 1,303) - Ohio returns 80.9 percent of its receiving yards (1,054 of 1,303) - Ohio returns 84.6 percent of its touchdowns (22 of 26) - Ohio returns 84.3 percent of its tackles (739 of 877) - Ohio returns 87.1 percent of its tackles for loss (61 of 70) - Ohio returns 91.2 percent of its sacks (15.5 of 17)

PLAY THE PERCENTAGES

• There are three rule changes this season that will signifi cantly affect how the game is played. Two have to do with the clock, while the third is a change in the instant replay system.

• Coaches will now have more control over the plays that are reviewed by instant replay. Each coach is now permitted one instant replay challenge per game. The team must have a time out remaining. To initiate the process, the coach calls one of his team’s time outs and informs the referee he would like on-fi eld call reviewed. If the call is overturned, the team does not lose its time out, but the coach is not permitted another challenge. If the call is upheld, or the play is deemed not to be reviewable, the team loses the time out.

• Coaches, players and fans will also have to keep a closer eye on the clock this season. The fi rst major change is that the clock will start on a free kick when the ball is put in play rather than when it is touched by the receiving team. The second change will more than likely have the biggest impact. Following a fi rst down, the clock will be started on the referee’s ready for play signal. Under the old rule, the clock did not start until the offense snapped the ball.

• Despite starting all 11 games in 2005, senior quarterback Austen Everson (Brentwood, Tenn.) entered spring drills and preseason camp having to earn the starting nod in 2006. Everson was named the starter about halfway through preseason preparations.

• Last season, Everson became the fi rst Bobcat quarterback to start every game of a season since Dontrell Jackson in 2000. When Everson takes the fi rst snap of the 2006 season, he will own the longest string of starts by a Bobcat signal caller since Jackson started 26 straight games from 1999-2001.

• Everson fi nished the 2005 season second on the team in both rushing yards (224) and rushing touchdowns (6). His six running scores were the most for a Bobcat quarterback since Fred Ray had eight in 2003. Former quarterback Kareem Wilson is the Bobcats’ single-season rushing touchdown record holder with 14. He has 10 rushing touchdowns for his career.

• Everson is poised to crack the Bobcats’ all-time top 10 in several statistical categories.

BOBCAT FOOTBALL • BOBCAT FOOTBALL • BOBCAT FOOTBALL • BOBCAT FOOTBALL • BOBCAT FOOTBALL • BOBCAT FOOTBALL

• Junior Kalvin McRae (Decatur, Ga.) was a fi rst-team All-MAC selection in 2005. He ran for 1,153 yards, the third-best single-season rushing total in school history. McRae’s 104.8 yards per game was fi fth in the MAC and 26th nationally.

• McRae was the fi rst Bobcat since Arnold Welcher in 1975 to have three 200-yard games in one season. Nobody has ever had four at Ohio. He was the fi rst Ohio player since Steveland Hookfi n in 1998 to have consecutive 200-yard games (vs. Ball State, vs. Buffalo), and was one of only six backs in the nation with at least three 200-yard games in 2005.

• McRae had 139 carries combined in the last six games (23.2/game) of 2005. He had a then-career-high 29 rushes against Central Michigan and Ball State before running 31 times at Buffalo. It was the most carries for a Bobcat since Chad Brinker had 36 in 2002.

• McRae’s quest for Bobcat history begins against Tennessee-Martin. He is trying to become the fi rst Bobcat in 30 years to rush for at least 1,000 yards in consecutive seasons. Arnold Welcher was the last to do it, running for 1,175 yards in 1975 and 1,034 yards in 1976. Steveland Hookfi n is the only other Bobcat to have at least two 1,000-yard seasons (1996 & 1998).

• McRae became only the fourth Ohio player ever to rush for 1,500 yards in their fi rst two seasons. Prior to McRae, the last player to do it was Dontrell Jackson in 1999 and 2000. Here is how McRae stacks up to the Bobcat’s all-time leading rushers through their fi rst two seasons.

Matt Coppage

Coppage Back to Start New Start Streak• Senior offensive lineman

Matt Coppage’s (Walton, Ky.) team-best streak of 28 consecutive starts ended against in the 2005 fi nale Miami. The tackle missed the game with a hamstring injury.

• Coppage’s streak dated back to his redshirt freshman season in 2003.

• Coppage’s fi rst 18 starts came at left guard, but he was the Bobcats’ left tackle in 2005.

• Linebacker Matt Muncy enters the 2006 season with Ohio’s longest starting streak at 24 straight contests. Linebacker Michael Graham is next at 17 straight starts.

Offensive Line Looks to Continue Improvement• Ohio’s offensive line returns three players

— senior Matt Coppage (Walton, Ky.), senior J.J. Knabb (McMurray, Pa.) and junior Matt Miller (Mechanicsville, Va.) — that started at least six games on the offensive line last year. In addition, junior Paul Johnson (Vienna, W.Va.) and sophomore Tommy Stuck (Lancaster, Ohio) each started fi ve games.

• That level of experience should allow for even more improvement. Despite allowing a season-high four sacks to Akron, the Bobcats reduced their number of sacks allowed in 2005 by 65 percent. The Bobcats fi nished fourth in the MAC with only 19 sacks allowed in 11 games (1.7/game). In 2004, Ohio allowed 55 sacks in 11 games (5.0/game).

• In the running game, Ohio averaged 174.1 yards per game, up 61 percent from 2004’s average of 108.2. The team’s yards per carry jumped from 2.9 in 2004 to 4.5 in 2005.

Bryson Bush

Bush to Miss 2006• Junior offensive lineman Bryson Bush

(Canton, Ohio) suffered a season-ending knee injury during preseason camp. Bush was slated to be in heavy rotation at offensive tackle.

• Bush fi nished the 2005 season as the Bobcats’ starting left guard. He played in all 11 games, starting fi ve times.

• Senior wide receiver Scott Mayle (Philippi, W.Va.) led the Bobcats in receiving last season with 21 catches for 358 yards and three touchdowns. Mayle

• In addition to his receiving skills, the Bobcat offense utilizes the speedster’s ability in the running game. Last season, he haad a career-high 21 carries for 141 yards.

• Mayle had a 39-yard touchdown catch and a 50-yard run against Buffalo to increase his career total to 25 playes from scrimmage covering at least 20 yards.

DUAL THREAT• Mayle led the MAC and ranked 17th in the

nation in kickoff returns with an average of 27.2 per return in 2005.

• He registered his fi rst career kickoff return for a touchdown with an 88-yard score against Ball State. Mayle’s return tied for the fi fth longest in school history. It was the fi rst for the Bobcats since Kahiem Maxwell went 99 yards against Western Michigan in 1998. It was the fi rst Ohio kick return for a touchdown at Peden Stadium since Courtney Burton went 88 yards against Miami in 1992.

Justin Riley

Receiving Corps Mixes Experience with Youth• In addition to Scott Mayle,

the Bobcats return fi ve receivers that caught at least three passes in 2005.

• Junior Justin Fitzgerald (Richmond, Va.) was Ohio’s second-leading receiver last season with 19 catches for 236 yards and his fi rst career touchdown. Fitzgerald also had an 80-yard touchdown run against Ball State.

• Senior Justin Riley (Grove City, Ohio) led the Bobcats with a 16.2 yards per catch average. Riley missed four games with a hand injury. He had six catches for 97 yards last season.

• Other key returnees to the receiving corps are senior William Norwood (Racine, Wis.; 8 catches, 87 yards), senior Ahmona Maxwell (Paducah, Ky.; 7 catches, 40 yards) and junior Robert Preston (Columbus, Ohio; 3 catches, 32 yards).

• Several newcomers have been added to the mix that are expected to make immediate contributions. Junior college transfer Chido Nwokocha (Elk Grove, Calif.) may make the quickest transition. Nwokocha had 119 catches for 1,655 yards and 14 touchdowns in his two seasons at Sacramento City College. He joined the Bobcats in time for spring practice.

• Freshman Chris Garrett (Bristow, Va.) is also being asked to contribute, not only as a receiver, but also on speical teams. Garrett, a running back in high school, will be used on both the kickoff and punt return units.

• In addition to Garrett, the Bobcats have fi ve other freshman receivers vying for playing time.

Tight End Trio• The Bobcats have three

senior tight ends that will see the bulk of the playing time in 2005.

• Rudy Sylvan (Suisan City, Calif.) made fi ve catches for 24 yards in 11 games last season. Corey Logan (Columbus, Ohio) hauled in four passes for 29 yards in 11 games, while Thomas Christy (South Euclid, Ohio) had one catch in 11 games.

• One or more of the tight ends will need to develop into a receiving threat. Last year’s starter, Dave Cody, ended the year as Ohio’s third-leading receiver with 15 catches for 144 yards.

• Muncy was a fi rst-team All-MAC pick in 2005 after averaging a league-best 10.5 tackles per game. He also ranked among the nation’s top 20 in tackles per game.

• Muncy had at least 10 tackles in six of Ohio’s 11 games in 2005. It was the most double-digit tackle games in a season for an Ohio player since Dennis Chukwuemeka had six in 2003.

Lasher to Pull Triple Duty• The Bobcats have some

questions to answer on special teams. No one on the roster has attempted a collegiate fi eld goal or extra point, and the only player on the roster with a collegaite punt is quarterback Austen Everson (quick kick vs. Buffalo in 2005).

• Headed into the opener, senior Matt Lasher (Copley, Ohio) is slated to handle all three kicking duties.

• Lasher averaged 62.0 yards with nine touchbacks as the Bobcats’ kickoff man in 2005.

• Ohio has two rookies competing with Lasher. Freshman Justin Gomes (Erie, Pa.) was brought in to compete for the placekicking job, while rookie Matt Schulte (Cincinnati, Ohio) will back up Lasher on the punt team.

•Last season, the Bobcats had Matt Miller punt and kick fi eld goals. An honorable mention All-MAC pick at punter, he averaged 38.6 yards per punt, was 3-for-4 on fi eld goals and 14-for-15 on extra points.

Yates Gets Sixth Year• Senior defensive lineman

Shane Yates (Martinez, Ga.) was granted an extra year of eligibility by the NCAA in March. Yates joined the Bobcats in 2001.

• After redshirting his fi rst season at Ohio, Yates played in the fi rst two games of 2002 before suffering a season-ending foot injury. As a sophomore in 2003, Yates played in seven games, but another foot injury forced him to miss the remainder of that campaign.

• During preseason practice prior to the 2004 season, Yates was moved to the defensive line. He played in 10 games, including eight starts and made 14 tackles, including two for a loss. As a fi fth-year senior in 2005, Yates started all 10 games that he played in. He fi nished fourth on the Ohio defensive line and eleventh on the team in tackles with 27, including fi ve for loss.

Safety in Numbers• The Bobcats have three

safeties that earned valuable playing time last season, including two starters. Juniors Todd Koenig (Nanty-Glo, Pa.) and Tony Ward (Beaumont, Texas) both return after starting nine and eight games, respectively, in 2005. Added to that pair is sophomore Michael Mitchell (Ft. Thomas, Ky.) who played in nine games as a true freshman in 2005.

• The trio is interchangeable between the free and strong safety positions. The depth at the position is the main reason junior Michael Hinton (Burlington, N.C.) was moved to cornerback during preseason practice.

• Koenig led all defensive backs in 2005 with 77 tackles, including 3.0 behind the line of scrimmage. He ranked third on the team overall. Koenig also had two interceptions.

• Ward fi nished fourth on the squad with 69 tackles, including 2.5 for a loss., with one interception.

• Mtichell had 21 stops in nine games. He made 1.5 tackles for loss, broke up two passes and forced a fumble.
