dean’smessage

Dear DCP Alumni and Friends,

When it comes to providing a high quality education for our students, DCP does not do it alone. As alumni and friends of the College, you are a critical component of our community, helping develop DCP students into fully functioning and well-prepared individuals who will reach across the nation and the globe to impact the lives of many.

The passion we devote to our teaching and research endeavors changes lives and communities, and it is made possible by your support. Looking through the pages of this awards booklet, you will see the names and faces of the students whose lives were in some way affected by your vested interest in their academic development.

However, the awards and scholarships our College confers are more than just recognition of academic achievement. Many of these scholarships and funded competitions encourage community service, active professional engagement, personal development and the pursuit of unique academic endeavors.

As you look through this booklet, you may find additional opportunities for further enhancing the College’s programs through giving. As a leader in design, construction and planning education, DCP has the opportunity to remain at the forefront of education in our disciplines through your continued support, which helps attract the best faculty and students.

Establishing endowments creates a legacy and allows you to have a lasting influence on the College’s character, while providing the College with the resources it needs to stay at the cutting edge. I promise that the reward to you will be as great as it is to the students and faculty your gifts support.

Again, on behalf of the College, I thank you for giving your time and money to provide these invaluable scholarships and awards.

Sincerely,

Anthony J. DastaInterim Dean and Professor

Alumni ofSponsored by Col. Arthur and Beverley Witters of Orlando, this competition fosters cooperation between designers, builders and planners through a problem-solving exercise involving multi-disciplinary student teams from the college. The recently created Rinker Scholar Endowment will for the first time be awarded to Capt. Patrick C. Suermann for the

upcoming academic year. Patrick received his bachelor’s degree from the U.S. Air Force Academy and his master of science degree in construction management from Texas A&M. He teaches construction courses at the U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Col. Patrick will start his doctoral program at the Rinker School starting the Fall 2006 semester. Established in 2006 by a generous gift from the Marshall E. Rinker, Sr. Foundation, Inc., this $1 million endowment supports fellowship awards to Associated Schools of Construction faculty members pursuing a Ph.D. in construction management at UF. Establishing this endowment is, in part, a response to

the growing need for Ph.D. level faculty members actively conducting research at top-level schools like the Rinker School of Building Construction. UF is uniquely positioned to support this type of opportunity for doctoral fellowships in the construction management field because it is one of only four in the nation with a doctoral program focused on the management field. Continued support for the Rinker School through generous gifts like this keeps opportunities available to the most qualified recipients with the greatest potential to maintain the Rinker School’s position among the nation’s premier building construction management institutions. This gift is eligible for matching funds from the State of Florida Major Gift Trust Fund. Capt. Patrick Suermann,

Rinker Scholar

ConstructionS cholarBOB MOSS, president of Moss & Associates, receives a BCN Construction Hall of Fame award for his proven excellence in the construction industry. While CEO of Centex Construction Group from 2000-2003, the firm grew to be the nation’s top rated domestic general contractor with projects spanning 45 states with 1,500 employees. He came to this position after serving as CEO of Centex Rooney where in his 14 year tenure he increased annual revenue from $100 to $700 million. In the two years since its founding, Moss & Associates has grown from two employees, Bob and Scott Moss (BCN 1996), to 200 employees with 21 active projects.

Bob is an emeritus member of the Rinker School Advisory Council Executive Committee, and member of several professional organizations such as: Board of Directors, Governor’s Florida Council of 100; World President Organization, Chief Executive Organization, and Heart of Florida United Way. Today, Bob’s favorite new role is playing “Papa” to his grandchildren Sarah, Wyatt and Ann Claire.

CHIP REID (BCN 1976) is CEO of Current Builders, one of Florida’s premier construction companies. Chip, a diligent leader and savvy businessman, has more than 25 years experience in the management of large-scale survey and engineering construction projects. Recognizing client needs and market trends has navigated the success of Current Builders.

Chip’s success in the industry is balanced by his involvement with the community. He is actively involved with the Toys for Tots Christmas program, and he is a member of the National Associated General Contractors Workforce Development Committee, which creates partnerships with high schools. This provides construction industry opportunity exposure and training to those students not pursuing college.

Chip is a member of the Rinker School Advisory Council Executive Committee, a member of Presidential Council for the University of Florida, President of Associated General Contractors-South Florida Region 2000-2002, and an Associate of the American Institute of Constructors.
