Words of Advice to Students
Find mentors in your chosen career. They can encourage you in your studies and help you hit the ground running once you graduate.
Networking is quite essential in career development and cannot be understated.
Try to gain the most "work" experience in the field you hope to pursue while studying at school. I found that my work experience was just as important as the classes I took. Take advantage of the many part & full time staff opportunities while attending classes at the U.

Words of Advice to Students
Although it may not always seem like it, the U is very organized and the online resources are amazing. I was very disappointed when I started looking at other school's websites like onestop and information I needed wasn't there, maps were bad and the interactive portions of also terrible. The class structure and amount of avaliable classes and times is also a huge assest. Take advantage of this!
Become close with professors in your field, become close with your advisor.
Being employed as a student or as an intern in your field of study during your undergraduate is a great way to get your foot in the door once you have completed your degree. Networking and professional contacts are a must!
Do what you love.
don't rely on goldpass. search as many avenues you can, don't be afraid to start low to get into a company or field you want. don't over estimate the value you of your degree
Even if it isn't a part of your program participate in volunteer opportunities and internships. While school gives you a foundation for your career, the only way to actually get a feel for what it will be like is to do the work. Also, try not to take out the maximum amount you can for loans and get whatever you took out paid off early.
Gain as much experience as possible through volunteer, internships, part time jobs, information sessions, personal interviews or anything that will better your knowledge on areas you are interested in. You can read anything in a book but only true experience will help you develop your own interests.
Get involved in mentor programs. Do things outside of school to prepare yourself for a career.
Get involved with as many intern positions and extra groups as possible
Go to an ICP information session if you are unsure of what career you would like to pursue.
Go to an Ivy League School. Or go to the U of M for a year maybe, and work hard on transferring out to another school
Graduate on time, it is a waste of time and money to spend more than four years in school. It is fun, enjoy it and four years is the right amount of time to spend in college.
I would tell them to get experience. You can tell a fish a 1000 times what it is like to walk on land, but until he does he will never know. Books are good, but learning by doing is more valuable. I think students and young people should supplement their education with jobs related to their field and starting small businesses while in school. I learned a lot of valuable information in college and I think in general, I am smarter and can solve problems better. Most people coming out of college are looking for jobs and money. The more skills you have the better. Also, do what you love, follow your heart. There is no point in doing something you hate.
Internships are invaluable. Always have your resume updated you never know when something will come up.
16
Internships, get internships
Keep all contact information of professors, classmates, and anyone who you come in contact with that has any pertinent advice to offer in your future career. Networking is key to getting into most careers.
KNOW WHAT YOU WANT TO DO, then study that. Don't sit around and wait for a major or interest to hit you in the face. You're wasting time and money. Get to college with an end-goal in mind, then be alright when that changes, and adjust the goal accordingly.
Learn to learn, and enjoy doing it.
look for outside experience and find specialized courses with good teachers. look to get experience and education outside of your coursework
Make sure ot be diverse in your education. Interdiscplinary degrees are attractive to employers so this is something to consider when organizing your curriculum. Also the ability to speak another language is extremely valuable for employers.
Make sure there is job placement. The university of MN job career fair is a JOKE~! The university has to help it's students. They just take their money and send them on their way with no resources or help. YOU ALSO NEED TO HIRE NEW ADVISORS! MY MOTHER ADVISED ME MORE THAN THAT POOR PITIFUL EXCUSE FOR AN ADVISOR YOU GAVE ME!
Make sure to look into internship programs and get involved in groups/campus activities to help your resume.
Make sure you Graduate
My major or my gpa had nothing to do with attaining my current position. However, it will help me move up to higher levels in my retail field. Real life experience is important so if you can work in a major related field you will find it extremely beneficial.
Speak with your advisor on a regular basis and make sure you lay out your plan to graduate clearly.
Start internships as well as volunteer work as soon as possible, because any sort of experience will count and help them when they pursue a career.
Start looking for a job early before graduating because it can take months to find a job, and volunteer/intern in the field you are interested in working in because most employers will not hire someone who does not have experience in the job field they are applying for.
Start thinking about what you want to do after college early, because finding a job is tough. I'd also suggest taking time off before entering grad school or further education to gain some experience in the work field, so when you decide to go back to school the material you learn can be applied to your experiences, which will enhance your learning.
Stay focused and study hard.
study hard and play hard
Take internships as soon as possible. Don't give up.
Take the time to explore the different classes and areas that interest you. It is easy to let these slide past, unused and looked over - challenge yourself to seek out and blossom your varied passions. Finding these post-college is not cheap or easy. Now is the time.
That it is very important to be in close contact with your guidance councilor so he/she can help you along the way. It is also very important to be involved in a well rounded range of activities within the school and in the community.
The ICP was a good choice for me although I don't feel I had enough support after graduation (probably because of below)
Work an internship prior to accepting permanent employment to confirm that you indeed enjoy the work you plan on doing for a career.
17
Write down all the things that they are interested in, and then determine what kind of occupation would fit those interests.
You have to look out for yourself and seek alternative help be cause the resources at the University are there, however are not very useful. You must seek out opportunities and talk to people in the field you wish to pursue to find out what it is they need to become prepared.
You have to work outside the system to get the experiences that will be truly beneficial. Create your own major.

Words of Advice to Students
Be aware of the job market for the field. Currently, the economy is not allowing for a high emploment rate for recent graduates of architecture.
Be involved and do not take easy ways out. The more you put into it, the more you get out. Seriously. While in school, despite the frustrations and time limitations you have, get out and do more than expected. It will help you post-graduation.
Be prepared to look for a job for at least 6 months. It actually does take longer than expected
I strongly suggest getting an internship. Employers look for real world experience.
Make sure to stay well-rounded in your studies. You never know what careers you may want to pursue, whether somewhat related to your degree or not.
Oh my goodness... Well, it's awfully nice to KNOW what you want do do in your career; however, most of us were not that blessed as was the case for me. My advice would be this: in the beginning of your college careeer, try taking general classes in the area of interest you think you MIGHT want to work in. Then, make a plan (and don't fret if you decide you don't like it) and try to stick with it. As far as jobs AFTER you graduate, I would recommend you start looking while still in school. Make a portfolio..send it out to everyone and remember...they may be interviewing you, but you are also interviewing them. And, if you're like me, and don't think you want to pursue what you went to school for, I suggest just hopping in on jobs. It sure does show you what you DON"T want. It's your life...do what you want with it.
Start looking for job openings early and take elective classes that will make you more marketable for the jobs.
Start networking now to find people in a field related to the one you wish to pursue. Doing so will make it much easier to find a job once you graduate. In addition research your profession to find out what to expect when you graduate and what additional training/education or licenses you may need.
-Try to line up a job before you graduate, so start applying for jobs 2 to 3 months before graduation. -Realize that out of every 100 jobs you apply for that you may only get a few interviews. -Have a couple review your resume and cover letter -Try to get experience volunteering or working in something related to what you want to do once you graduate

Words of Advice to Students
always focused your energy on a good resume/portfolio. Preseting yourself well is highly influencial for employers.
Architecture is a hands-on career where a learning curve is gradually and constantly increasing. I believe there is no way Architecture students will come out of the school knowing everything. It may feel hard to get a degree without feeling that one is knowledgeable enough to be a professional in the field. But that is how it will always be.
Begin looking for employment or internships while you are still in school, even if it means working part-time at the same time as classes, as these jobs usually continue on after graduation. Although it is a difficult choice to make for some students, because working during school cuts down on time you can dedicate to your studies. It is unfortunately often a trade-off between spending time to dedicate to the last year/semester of your studies and spending the time finding employment for after graduation.
dont settle for doing anything less than what you want to do.
even though it may seem impossible, try to develop a portfolio during school, look at the job market (which is horrible right now) and see what it is looking for (for example--you cannot get a job with a bachelors degree in architecture)
I would emphasize the classes that are actually pertanent to getting a job out of school ... CAD, Sustainability, Code Analysis, 3-D modeling, etc.
I would tell current students to work hard in class, but more importantly, start making friends not only inside your program, but also make friends with people in different fields. In terms of getting a job, its often who you know and not what you know.
If planning on pursuing architecture as a profession be sure to be aware of what it takes to become an architect; IDP, Graduate School, ARE. I would recommend looking into the construction management programs which give an insight into the the process of architecture/construction/project management which the architecture program does not offer. Also, I would highly recommend learning the technology which is actually used in the field; CAD, Revit, etc. Finally, I would recommend trying to obtain an internship in the field or a related field as soon as possible.
If you know what career you want to go into, try and find out what the day to day activities of that profession are. This will help you choose which classes are directly applicable to what you'll be doing. You can't live in theory and discussion forever.
If you think there's any chance you'll be working in an office after school, get an office job (especially a university office job) as soon as possible while you're still in school. Student employers may be lenient about the skills their workers come in with, but after graduation you're going to need AT LEAST one year, typically two or three years of office experience to get a decent job.
28
Learns as many SKILLS as possible in various programs. In the business of architecture, an entry level position will not ask you to design more than at the graphic level (presentation materials, layout etc.) But rather ask you to efficiently produce graphics and renderings using programs such as photoshop or 3D VIZ (3d modeling). A large part of production also relies heavily on CAD skills (computer aided drafting). If a student has a working knowledge of at least these 3 programs they will be highly marketable to prospective employers. -A good firm handshake and a nice smile also goes a LONG way when presenting yourself at job fairs and interviews.
Open minded attitude toward what you can accomplish. Keep your goals real but let imagination help to explore them.
-Seek part-time work in the field prior to graduation because it is very hard to find a job with no experience and only an undergraduate degree. -pursue fluency in computer drafting, modeling, and rendering programs. -Constantly add to and update your portfolio as you go.
Speak to prospective employers long before graduating to get an idea of what qualities and qualifications are desired. Find out what additional skills and activities outside of the University curriculum can be pursued to help prepare you for employment.
Start looking a semester before graduation. Believe in the skills that you have developed at the U. Take full advantage of the networking opportunities that the U provides / is.
Stay open to learning and thinking in new ways.
Take everything in that you are learning in school, but be prepared to be shocked at how little you really know once you enter the profession of architecture.
Take it all in spend less time partying and more time learning. You are paying an extreme amount of money best to get your moneys worth. I feel that many undergraduate students don't really appreciate the amount of money a college education costs until post graduation.
Talk to an advisor and make sure they have an interest in you. This way you can take the classes you need and want to take without overlapping categories. The nice advantage about the University of Minnesota is the diversity and options to pursue.
treat classes/studios with adjunct professors as semester-long interviews for jobs after graduation.
Try to get as much experience working while still in college

Words of Advice to Students
Ask graduates and current students detailed questions about the program you intend on pursuing. Write down these questions; be sure to speak with instructors as well. Explore the campus and its facilities. Check to see if there are numerous careers in the field you are entering.
Constantly practice your craft. Read about it, learn about it, physically do it to better your skills. Research far in advance about companies you would like to intern with and possibly work for in the future. Don't wait until you graduate to start looking for a position. This field is very competitive, and open position are sometimes far and inbetween.
Do as many internships as possible and try and find a job that way. An internship can pave the way for a successful career.
Go to school where there are actual opportunities and a job market in your field.
Learn everything you can, make contacts with industry professionals, utilize as many internship opportuinities as possible, and don't be afraid to ask questions.

Words of Advice to Students
Do not worry so much about grades. Interviews are more about how one presents themselves and presents their skills and assets. A great resume and portfolio presenting oneself is the most important object to prepare after graduation to obtain a job of interest. Focus on verbal communication skills within one's field of study and network as much as possible. Mett lots of people. The more people one gets to know the better of one is outside of school. The U of M is a great place to meet a lot of valuable people. Take advantage of it. From professors to students to other employees.

Words of Advice to Students
Don't expect having a degree and a small amount of student work to be enough -- in reality, a lot of agencies don't even take that into consideration. Real world experience from an internship at a well-connected firm and jobs at large campus student groups were the main things that helped me get a job and deal with its responsibilities, which, despite the entry-level position, were far beyond the scope of anything that I was taught in school from a technical/production standpoint.
Have more help and information when it comes to Design Students. There was a lot more help when it comes to other fields of study but not design. I personally, in one of my visits at the career office, was told to find people in my field and contact them with questions. I do not think that this was help at all.
I would tell them to keep looking until they find a career they are completely satisfied with and not to settle for less that what they deserve. I would also tell them, though, that every different career direction they may encounter is a new and good opportunity for learning.
It is really important to begin networking early in the program. I also think it is important to develop ideas past the project requirement, expand each project into a campaign.
Learn the programs inside and out; it is expected from you by the employers. In addition, know the printing process from the file preparation, through the printing process, to the final product.
Look for internships early.
NETWORK NETWORK NETWORK! And don't post horrible pictures of yourself on Facebook or MySpace.
School is much different than the real world of work. Get out there and research your field for yourself. Ask questions of professionals in your field, for they can give you realistic advice.
Start networking before you graduate. Intern with as many firms as possible. Finding your first job is the hardest and landing it has more to do with your work ethic and who you know than your talent.
take as many internships as you can.
35
take learning about companies and how the design field works into your own hands much sooner than your senior year.
Take your internships seriously. The more active you can be and more experiences you can have within your field before graduating, the more likely you will get a job quickly after graduation. I strongly recommend doing more than one internship, participating in student groups, and being pro-active with your educational experience.
work hard early... you have no idea how much all the little stuff throughout your years of college matters later, how helpful it is in preparation.

Words of Advice to Students
1. study abroad!!!!! 2. get involved with internships, informational interviews, etc. while you are in school so that you have a grasp of where you'd like to work when you are done w/school.
Be excited about the job you are interviewing for. Employers like to see that you are interested in the job and not just a paycheck.
Develop a network within the profession, as early and widely as possible.
Find an internship right away
For interior design students, I would tell them to make sure that they pursue an internship in their junior year, and/or take part in the mentor program. Take a lot of time to build your portfolio, and when you're in the interview, make sure to put the projects/skills that match the firm's projects/mission in the forefront. Research on potential future firms is critical. Make sure you know about their business and what's been happening in the news with them!
Get an internship during school! Your school projects will be much better, and you can establish vital relationships and skills for obtaining a job following graduation.
Get as much internship experience while you are in school as possible... you learn much more in the field than you do in school. Also seek a variety of experience at small vs. large firms, residential vs. commercial to determine what your best fit is.
I would advise them to utilize all the resources available to them through the University and also to join a professional organization in their field. I would advise them to network like crazy. I would also advise them to be realistic in their job search and plan for it to take longer than they might expect to find what they're looking for.
Look at job openings and the requested areas of knowledge (computer programs, etc) and try to learn as much about these while in school.
Since I can't find a full time job in my major now, I am in no position to offer advice.

Words of Advice to Students
Research what kinds of tasks make you happy and which do not. Don't narrow opportunities down because they aren't in your major.
Be patient! The right job will come if you look hard enough.
Have a general idea on what you want to do and then research where there are good places to work. Try to network as much as possible. Stay positive and work hard.
Start early. Informational interviews are a great way to network, and learn what it is that you really want to do.
Work with the career center and get as much experience as possible in your field before graduating. Anything to boost your resume is key
Think of the things you enjoy doing or learning about and research the University's major options. Once you've pinpointed a few choices reasearch the requirements, pre-requisites and classes needed to take to attain the degree, as well as what the job field looks like for that major. It may take a lot of time researching and going on google or the career office, but once you are ok with the "fun" and "not so fun" classes needed to achieving that degree, you are closer to being happy and successful in your classes, your major, and hopefully eventually your career. Make sure to ask anyone and everyone that is older or have gone through the process about their college expiriences too!! People love to talk about themselves and will tell you their story. Learning from other people's mistakes or successes is also a very great skill to have to prepare yourself for the right career field for yourself.
Get internships ASAP! Internships really help you determine whether or not a certain career is the right one for you. It also helps to determine what size and kind of company you want to work for.
Start the Job Search early and remember it takes time to find the right position. I also highly recommend doing a mock interview. I work with many people who conduct interviews and it's very important you make the right first impression.
Try different things. Go down different avenues. Break out of your comfort zone--its the only way you will figure out what you truly want to do and where your passion lies. After graduation, the job search is an extremely humbling and frustrating process. You have to keep your head held high and keep going. Believe in yourself and in your qualifications. The hardest part is getting the interview. Be persistent. And remember, your first job will not be your dream job.

Don't plan on finding a job right away, it takes time. A first job doesn't have to be what you plan on doing or want to do the rest of your career. Sometimes getting your foot in the door at a company that has positions down the road you would like to stay in is a good idea.
Get started searching for jobs early. Fall graduates should start in the summer and Spring graduates should be looking from the beginning of the school year.
Know the field that you are interested in and be willing to experiment. Internships are a great way to get a sample of what the job is like and it allows one to network. Know your own strengths and weaknesses and practice as many mock interviews until you feel comfortable and understand how they are.
Use career counselers for insight on your resume.

Words of Advice to Students Start searching early and apply at many places
Have fun and enjoy it before working every day for the rest of your life.
Don’t limit yourself to one career path. By the time you graduate you might like another aspect of something.
Start early! One internship experience doesn't cut it, I had two summer internships and wish I had done a third!
Start the search early and often if you want to get a job right after graduation.

Words of Advice to Students
Be sure to stay on top of paper work and other administrative things because you are one of many. Also, make sure to introduce yourself to your professors or chances are they will not know who you are either.
Don't just choose an internship because of the money. Really think about the career you want, and work hard to find and internship in that field. This will really help with experience when applying for positions.
Don’t worry about your degree or what it is in, you will be trained to your individual position anyway. Take a vast array of classes and you will have the fundamentals of everything.
Internships are very helpful in finding out how much you really enjoy a career feild because often you get to do a broad range of things at internships vs. a regular job. Networking with people in your career field and those in other feilds creates many more opportunities for you both business and personal.
Interview with as many companies as possible, even if you don't plan on working for them. The practice helps. Plus you never know what might come of an interview that you think may be unimportant in your overall career selection.
It's important to take your time in figuring out what you want to study, almost equally important is figuring out what you want to do for the rest of your life. Take the time to plan out your year to year objectives while you are an undergraduate, doing so will help guide you in deciding what career path is right for you. You will feel confident about the choices you make, the knowledge you receive and your ability to work professionally.
51
Keep an open mind about positions available. There are a variety of things you can do with any degree. Think about pursuing a graduate degree if you have the time and money. It will benefit you greatly.
Keep your mind and options open. There are so many more opportunities out there than you can imagine...you just have to look for them.
Meet with your advisor! They are one of the best resources you can rely on. Take a variety of courses, its good to be well rounded in the veterinary field, you never know what might spark a special interest. Include yourself in extra activities around the U. Join the pre-vet club or dairy club, shadow a DVM.
Networking is key, and you have to be able to market yourself to a broad spectrum of potential employers so be sure to make yourself well-rounded.
Start job searches early
Start looking early and try your best to fit in volunteering to gain experience. Employers are often looking for experienced people and I am having trouble with that as I had to work full-time during school and didn't have any opportunity to volunteer.
Stay active in campus activities to meet faculty members and fellow students in your area of interest.
Think about your future after college before picking a major. I thought i would go to vet school and in the end had no desire to go what so ever, so my degree really didnt bring very many opportunities.
Work hard in school but do not focus too much on grades and focus more on accomplishments and internships. I was once told a 3.0 students learns how to use their time wisely and a 4.0 only knows how to study

Words of Advice to Students Do an internship
Don't be shy to interview as many places as possible. Good jobs don't come from posting a resume online. Get up and get out of your own way to find a job!
every student should get experience during the school. I gain a great experience working on Campus as the student accountant. This definatly helped to receive the great offer as Sr Accountant just six months after graduation.
Get an internship early! Get an intership somewhere, it's more important than grades. Don't wait for the last minute to find a job.
Get an internship. Go to the Career Fairs.
Get involved with the professors. Utilize their office hours whether for help on assignments or to talk about the major or "real life" in general (as far as careers go). It would have helped to known some professors better, although many seemed too busy for me when I would go to visit them.
Get to know people in the industry you are planning to enter. Professional contacts like these are invaluable. They are often a source for you to tap into when looking for a job, but more importantly they will teach you things about the professional world that you can never learn in a classroom or text book.
I was a transfer durning my junior year. I highly recommend students completing their generals at a small school then transfer in to the U of M
Internships
It's never too early to start job hunting. Internships and student involvement is the to success after college.
Research everything. Call people and talk. People are willing to share opinions and offer advice if you are genuinely interested. Ask questions you think may be stupid because they usually aren't.
The Army has many opportunities....Besides that make sure you put serious effort into your job search, jobs will not come to you.
Utilize personal contacts (family and friends). Do at least one internship.

I wasn't well informed about all of the different aids the U offers in finding a job from career service, gold pass, to job fairs and more till very late. Words of Advice to Students
Be sure to do internships and RA or TA jobs that are pertinent to the type of employment you want out of college, because everyone in the environmental field wants two years of experience.
Establish good relationship with professors and fellow students. These people will more than likely be in the same field as you and be a good source of contacts.
Explore as many options as you can. Do and see as much as you can while in school. Get internships.
Know what types of jobs are available for your degree. Be prepared to get a masters degree if you want to move up quickly.
Make sure you gain professional experience during college so you are not overeducated and lacking professional experience

Words of Advice to Students Ask all kinds of questions regarding work interests. Do as many internships as possible
Decide what you want to do before you are a senior and get an internship.
Good internships and contacts are key
Start Early!
Try lots of new experiences. Move across the country for a summer, work for little money... Most of your "luck" comes from experiences you pursue and not your education.
Try out many different classes to see what really interests you.
Try your best, because all that "obscure" knowledge picked up in undergrad classes will someday be useful, believe it or not!
Work hard, get a great internship, and network.

Words of Advice to Students
Start out taking only generals, maybe obtain your AA first to have time to choose which program to follow because there are so many and sometimes it is difficult to change over. Make good contacts within the University-teachers, faculty, and other students because they can help during and after school with general student issues, making more contacts, and with employment. Maybe join at least 1 association, either through school or outside of school. Keep good relations with whomever you have your internship with. Pry information from people who know what is going on to see what trends are going on in the local industry or gov't sectors for jobs. Don't give up!!!!!!!!!

Words of Advice to Students Get to know your professors through jobs in their labs.
Make acquaintences with professors that are doing research in your field of interest. They will be guides to the professional world.
Rather than depending on classes to inform you of your professional interests, get involved in research. Get your hands dirty in the field that you are pursuing a degree in. There is no better way to see if you are suited for a particular job than to actually do it. For me, U of M's Undergraduate research Opportunities Program was an amazing way to get a real life look at my career field.
Start now persuing experience in your desired field
Stay active by doing things such as volunteer work and internships. It really pays off in the end.
take your time and make sure you know what it is you really want from your education.

Words of Advice to Students Both Grades and Experiences are important.
Don't leave school.
Don't stop doing what you started, even if it isn't what you think you want. If you change you mind, you will probably change it again. Just "power through" and finish what you started. You can always go back to school once you are done. Even if you get a degree in something, you won't necessarily be doing those things at your job. The more you change your mind, the more money it will cost you.
Find out what options you have for classes that you may not want to take. There are always other options, which aren't given to you flat out. Ask your advisor for options today!

Finding a job out of college takes a reasonable amount of time, start early!! Also, get the best grades you can, don't limit yourself to the bare minimum requirements to pass your classes. C's get degrees but they don't get you in Graduate School. Graduate programs are competitive! I've realized too late that I didn't put the studying and time in to reach my full potential. Also, work experience is almost as important as a degree. Having a 4 year degree doesn't guarentee a decent paying job. Work or volunteer in your career of interest to get experience and start buliding your resume.
Focus on classes while you are in school and interships/work experience during the summer. Your grades are important. Especially if you plan on furthering you education into graduate studies.
Get an Internship!
Get involved with clubs on campus.
Get out and Network!
Go to all your classes..."more bang for the buck!"
Great college overall. Student needs to be very self-motivated in order to succeed.
I would recommend that they continue with language studies, even if it is not required. Proficiency in a foreign language is useful in an international community. I would also remind them that most people who receive an undergrad. degree do not get a job in the field they studied directly out of college.
Make it personal. Join study groups, if possible smaller classes, get to know your professors.
NETWORK and start looking for a job before graduation.
Network and start looking quite early before graduation. Don't be discouraged if you are turned down for the first job you apply to. Keep pushing through interviews with a positive attitude.
Network early! Follow your heart and your passions because in the end you will be much happier.
Start early looking for jobs and be willing to start somewhere. Once you have experience it is easier to find a job in the field that you love.
Start hunting early and be open to any and all opportunities that come your way. You never know what a current job will bring and what other doors it will open.
start looking for jobs early, and don't be a nutrition major because its impossible to find a job with that major without having to go to graduate school
Take advantage of the career centers on campus to help finding a job, helping with resumes, and preparation for graduate school.
Take the time to get to know your professors, and for them to get to know you. A good letter from your professor could do more than your grades or test scores to get you into a good school.
Volunteer and get experience in your field of study before graduation.
Volunteer, network and more volunteering in the area you wish to work.

Words of Advice to Students
I would tell students to be open to working for free or little pay to get experience. I am unable to do that because I have a family to support, but single students need to work during their education to gain the 5 or so years of experience that is required by employers.
Just keep looking and researching until you find something you like. Do NOT take the first job that is offered to you if you feel pressured to take it. Take your time and find the job that you will really enjoy.
Students enrolled in the STC program at the University need to seek software training outside of the U.
