ANNUAL REPORT

To the Members and friends of Manly Warringah Cricket Club Inc. The Management Committee has pleasure in submitting for your consideration the 134

th Annual

Report and Financial Statement. The Club entered teams in the five Sydney Cricket Association Grade competitions along with the First Grade Limited Overs and T20 competitions, the Poidevin-Gray and AW Green Shield competitions. At the start of the season many people both inside and outside of the Club thought we would struggle having lost so many experienced players who had either retired or moved onto pastures new. To all of those I say have a look at this…….. 1

5th place in 1 Day competition

10th place in T20 competition

These results culminated in MWDCC becoming the SCA Club Champions for the third time in the last 12 years. The final day of the season was not to be forgotten with just 40pts between ourselves and Sydney Uni at the start of the day which meant that we could not rest on our laurels. With Sydney Uni winning all 5 grades, it meant that we had to win at least 4 grades and we did! What a performance by all the players. Then came the celebrations – the famous celebrations – with all players doing the nude lap of Manly Oval, led by our proud President Andrew Fraser … thankfully it was dark! It was something which will be remembered for many years to come.

This achievement becomes even more remarkable when you consider that the average age of the playing group this year was just 22, yes that‟s right 22, absolutely incredible to think that a group of players so young can achieve this. This bodes well for the future of the Club. I would like to thank everyone involved in the Club this season, starting with the committee led so passionately by President Andrew Fraser. The committee is a very hardworking team with EVERY member contributing to the betterment of the Club. Anyone who visits Manly Oval on a Saturday will see Fiona Lyon doing at fantastic job in the canteen. If you have been to any of the first grade matches, you will have seen David Gardiner doing a great job looking after the lads. This, along with many other roles within the club, contributed towards the decision to award Loz the Keith Marks „Clubman of the Year‟ award and very well deserved it is too. There are many others who do magnificent jobs which at time go unnoticed, too many to mention. I would, however, like to bring to everyone‟s attention the enormous amount of work that Greg Boyer, better known as Pathway Pat, has done this year managing the „Pathway Program‟, I honestly do not how he finds the time!. Another tireless worker is Joel Mason. It would take too long to mention everything Joel does for the Club, some things you see, but there are far more that you do not, he is just incredible. There are many other members of the backroom team who make this club run smoothly. I will mention a few here but I would like to say that, if I have missed anyone, then I apologise now – you know who you are:

Our scorers, Geoff Rogers, Gordon Currie and Don Sellin.

Allan Wright who not only assists at training but also does a sterling job as 3rd Grade manager.

Mal Elliott, Steve Cleary, Phil Munting and Ted Lindsay who assist in many different ways whenever they are asked.

We should also not forget the enormous work that went into the fundraising luncheon thanks to Tim Blank and Katinga Schroeder.

As you will see in the pages of this report the fantastic photography of Ian Bird, some of the action shots are amazing.

To all of you, I thank you on behalf of the Club for all your efforts, they are greatly appreciated. This season saw two events held at Manly Oval that took a lot of organising behind the scenes. These were the NSW Breakers Ladies games against South Australia and the T20 game between the Manly Sea Eagles and the Cronulla Sharks. Again many people helped out to stage these events and we appreciate everything they did. I would like to acknowledge the enormous support we receive from the local Mayors, Jean Hay and Michael Regan, as well as the NSW Treasurer Mike Baird. We are fortunate to count them as Club Patrons and great friends of Manly Cricket. I would like to acknowledge the support I have received from all the staff at CNSW during the season and, in particular, Roy Formica who was very patient in answering my questions. Our Club would not exist without the wonderful backing of our major sponsors, and we remain indebted to: Manly Bowling Club / Harbord Diggers / Mounties Group, Ann Wilson Funerals, TravelSIM, BOQ Manly, Bray‟s IGA, Quest Grande Esplanade and Fairlight Gourmet Butcher & Café. There are two other main contributions to our fabulous season this year; I have touched on the first one earlier, being the Pathway Program. This has ensured that the Club could cover for players not being available. It is, however, far more than just that as it gives the opportunity for all players in the district to follow a path from junior cricket all the way via Shires to Grade and hopefully to play for Australia. Fundamental to this are Warringah Cricket Club, coached by one of the greatest blokes you could wish to meet, David Gainsford. Without their fantastic support, the Pathway Program would not have been successful as it has been this year. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the committee at Warringah CC for their support of this great program. It will prove to be a beneficial program for years to come. The second is the amazing contribution of the coaching team, led so passionately by Dean Gilchrist and admirably assisted by Brett Penprase. Let‟s not forget this was their first season, making our achievement all the more remarkable. The time and effort Dean and his team have put into the Club this year will not be known by many outside of the playing group. This started with a very full pre-season and continued on during the

season. Due to the unforeseen weather, many changes to training schedules had to be organised which takes a lot more time than you might think. Then there was the additional time spent (outside of the twice weekly Club training sessions) with players honing their skills. The players are in great hands and, if they embrace Dean‟s philosophy and work hard at their game, there is no limit to what they can achieve in cricket. To put icing on the cake, it gives me great pleasure to inform you that Dean Gilchrist was awarded the Sydney Cricket Association Coach of the Year, the first time in our long history that one of our coaches has won this award! Well done Gilly, you truly deserve it! Finally, I would like to take the opportunity to thank all the wives and girlfriends of the players who became cricketing widows during the summer, we thank you for „allowing‟ them the time and space to participate in this great game. This is also relevant to the families of all the wonderful support staff we have at the Club who could not give their valuable time without your blessing. Personally I would like to sign off saying a big thank you to my wife Ann and two kids who have fully supported me in the role of Honorary Secretary which I have thoroughly enjoyed. Good Luck for 2012-2013.

2011/12 MWDCC PRESIDENT’S REPORT

It is once again with tremendous pride that I write my President‟s report for the Manly Warringah District Cricket Club, in this, our 134

th year.

I would firstly like to re-iterate the many thank you messages which were highlighted so aptly in our Honorary Secretary‟s report. I would like to acknowledge my Committee who have been tremendous this season – namely Simon Lyon, Fiona Lyon, John Parkinson, Dave Gainsford, Dave Gardner, Doug McGrath, Bruce Wickham, Langdon Gould, Greg Boyer, Joel Mason and John Warn, who also must be congratulated for his first year of work as SCA Chairman. A special thank you to Fiona Lyon who has spent countless hours putting together this Annual Report – a wonderful effort Fi! Thanks also to Parky for his efforts as Hon Sec. He is stepping down due to work commitments. To our other valued volunteers: our scorers Geoff Rogers, Gordon Currie, Allan Wright and Donny Dollars – your efforts week in week out, year after year are extraordinary – as are the many parents who chip in and help us out. To our coaches Dean Gilchrist & Brett Penprase: what a wonderful first year guys! Gilly, it is extraordinary how much time you devoted to the Club this season – so thanks once again mate! To each of the Captains: thanks for the time you all allocated to your roles – Tim Cruickshank, Ryan Bonnor, Craig Little, Max Burgess, Dave Farrell, plus Mitch Cleary and Corrie Boss as Club Captains. Plus of course our Green Shield and Poidevin-Gray captains: James Boyer and Adam Gummer. I would also like to congratulate our brothers at Warringah Cricket Club for capturing two premierships this season in the Shires competition. Our relationship with Warringah has never been stronger and thanks to the unique pathway program in place, we are now integral in each other‟s success. Great season guys and a fitting reward for Club Coach David Gainsford, who deservedly won their Clubman of the Year award! Now I want to focus on our performance in season 2011-12. There is always debate when comparing achievements and victories with past eras, but

what our Club achieved this season is arguably one of the greatest feats in our rich history. Following a successful 2010/11 season, we lost 15 players including three of our First XI stars in Adam Crosthwaite, Shane Cleary and Jackson Bird, plus several other senior players in the lower grades. We had a very young Club with an average age of just 22. With such inexperience, most people figured it would be a tough season for us and few gave us any hope of success. In fact, you could have got massive odds on us winning the Club Championship at the start of the season. The Club Championship is arguably the most prestigious trophy in Sydney grade cricket – there are 20 Clubs in Sydney, each with 5 x grades plus Green Shield and PGs. It is the accumulation of these the points from all 7 grades plus Green Shield and PGs that determine the Champion Club each year. We had a solid start to the season. Then, round by round, our performances continued to improve. We got on a roll and turned at Christmas in front of the Club Championship which was not expected – all of a sudden, you could see the self-belief in the players at the break. We have traditionally been poor performers in the rounds post-Christmas but the back half of the season draw favoured us as we had rounds against lowly-placed Blacktown and Mosman in the final rounds. It soon became a three horse race for the Club Champs between Sutherland, the very strong Sydney University club plus the mighty Manly boys. Then disaster struck when Northern Districts called off all three matches in their precinct during a Saturday/Sunday round (note the only 1

st grade

game in Sydney not to bowl a ball that round) – the less said on that one the better! But zero points to Manly that round. We went from having a 30 point lead, to a 70 point deficit to Sutherland, with Sydney Uni now right on our tail, just 10 points adrift. Blacktown was to be a defining round – again, with rain during the week, we almost didn‟t bowl a ball in the three away matches, as Council closed the grounds on the Friday afternoon. This would have killed off any hope of winning the title. But to the credit of the Blacktown President, he lobbied the Mayor and had the decision overturned. We

Page 12: 2006-07 MWDCC PRESIDENT’S REPORT · 2019. 11. 27. · 2008-2009 A Fraser R Wiblin (Gen Mgr) F Lyon 2009-2010 A Fraser R Wiblin (Gen Mgr) F Lyon 2010-2011 A Fraser R Wiblin F Lyon

won all 5 grades with outright points in two grades, to rocket back to the lead. Sutherland had a poor round, but Sydney Uni won all 5 grades also. So it came down to the final round, a One Dayer v Mosman – only Sydney Uni could beat us. We had a 40 point lead. In short, to catch us, they had to win all 5 grades and hope we lost at least 2 grades. So we all knew the scenario. Early on, it was clear Sydney Uni were going to win all 5 grades and that they did. Our 2s and 3s were bundled out cheaply. So things were very stressful at this point and the Prez grew a few more grey hairs! Thirds lost, but 2s, defending only 115, bowled superbly and rolled them for 65 – and incredibly won with a bonus point. 1s and 5s won comfortably – so it now came down to 4s – it was the last ball. Mosman were 9 down and needed 3 to win. We get a run out and win by 1 run. Then it was absolute pandemonium at Manly Oval as 20 players listening to the commentary on loud speaker now knew we had won the Club Championship by a mere 20 points over Sydney University. Was it a miracle, fate or pure hard work? I would say all of the above! The celebrations that evening will be remembered by all who attended forever – as our 1

st Grade

skipper Timmy Cruickshank aptly described it – “one of the all time great nights at Manly”. To give you an idea of how close it was, we scored 1564 Club Champs points to Sydney Uni‟s 1544 – so consider this – over the course of the season, we win by a mere 20 pts – that is just 1 x 3

rd grade win (24 pts)!

Randwick Petersham won last year with 1344 pts – so we had to score another 220 pts to beat Sydney Uni. It is believed to be a record Club Champs tally, surpassing our own record in 2006. Everyone appreciates how difficult is to win the Club Championship. It takes a collective effort from everyone involved in the Club, both on and off the field, from First Grade right through to Green Shield. Since 2000 – we have now won 4 x Club Champs titles. To put it in perspective, no other Club has won more than 2 during this 12 year period. We don‟t have hundreds of thousands of dollars to spend on coaching and administration resources. We don‟t have University degrees on offer. We don‟t have millions in Trust funds.

But what we do have at Manly is a wonderful group of people, a unique culture and a cricket family that breeds lifelong friendships - that‟s how we manage to defy all odds and keep winning Club Championship titles! Whilst we just missed out on collecting another two premierships and naturally there was disappointment – but to all the players, don‟t underestimate the enormity of what you achieved this season. It was nothing short of miraculous and one of the greatest performances from the entire Club in our 134 Year history! This success has been a collective effort from the coaches, captains, players, managers, supporters, wives, girlfriends, parents and our administrators. So the Sydney Smith Cup is for all of us to enjoy – CLUB CHAMPIONS - we all should feel incredibly proud of what we have achieved this season. Thank you to everyone involved and let‟s do it all again next season! Cheers “Frase”

CLUB COACH’S REPORT 2011/12

The 2011-12 Sydney Grade cricket season for the Manly Warringah District Cricket Club certainly turned out to be an „unexpected‟ yet brilliant success, despite the significant rain disruptions throughout the season. After an outstanding collective effort from the players of all five grades, the coaching panel, the Poidevin-Gray squad, the AW Green Shield squad, the committee and all the club‟s volunteers and supporters, the MWDCC won the extremely prestigious Sydney Smith Trophy (the Club Champions title) for 2011-12. A truly sensational result! In addition to this great achievement, four grade teams (one‟s, two‟s, three‟s and four‟s) plus the U/21 Poidevin-Gray team all made the preliminary finals series with Second and Fourth Grades ultimately making their respective Grand Finals. Unfortunately our young Fifth Grade team missed the finals by a whisker. And while the boys in both two‟s and four‟s were defeated somewhat convincingly by opposition teams who boasted a wealth of experienced „finals‟ cricketers, our Manly lads displayed glimpses of brilliance and resolve during their contests and ultimately came away better cricketers from the experience, albeit very disappointed ones. While we didn‟t put any Premiership silverware in the cupboard this season I do believe that the „unfinished finals business‟ will act as a powerful catalyst for the guys for next season. From the young players who experienced the grade environment for the first time this season through the inaugural Manly Warringah Cricket Pathway Program to those players who have been with the club for many years (and those somewhere in between), this season brought an incredible resurgence of mateship, enthusiasm and „collective success‟ that will resonate positively through the club and bring success for many years to come. The season was certainly one full of outstanding achievements and great personal milestones by many members of the playing group including; NSW representations, a five grade win double, grade debuts, maiden grade centuries, multiple centuries, record batting partnerships, career best bowling performances, outstanding individual fielding efforts and of course unbelievable team winning performances. Rather than going into the specific detail here, I will afford that privilege to that of the Grade, Poidevin-Gray and AW Green Shield Captain‟s reports contained within this Annual Report. I have, however, also provided a

very brief comment on each player further on in my „Player Reports‟ section. On a personal note, my first year as Club Coach at MWDCC was certainly special and somewhat of a „watershed‟ season for me. Seldom does a coach go into a „new role‟ with a new sporting organisation and have their „programs, principles and practices‟ all but completely embraced in their first season by all stakeholders. It happened this season and it couldn‟t have been a more fulfilling, enjoyable and rewarding experience. Certainly no less enjoyable than seeing the jubilant and ecstatic faces of everyone from the club the night we celebrated the Club Championship win. Again, a terrific result from a season of hard work and perseverance ... priceless! I would like to sincerely thank all those people who provided fantastic support to me throughout the season and assisted greatly in implementing the coaching program and structure. These people include:

my good friend and hard working Assistant Coach Brett Penprase (BP) for his consistent work and flexibility with the training program (especially on wet training days) and weekend team preparation;

Dave Gardiner - my right hand man at 1st

Grade and PG‟s;

Allan Wright – the Club Practice Captain, 3rd

Grade Manager, PG‟s Assistant and resident comedian;

all five grade Captains – Tim Cruickshank, Ryan Bonnor, Craig Little, Max Burgess and Dave Farrell; and PG‟s skipper Adam Gummer;

Karen Palmer – 1st Grade masseuse and her

team of masseuses from Australian College of Natural Therapies that looked after all grades at training;

Geoff Rogers – one of the best scorers in the business and one of the funniest;

Langdon Gould – Club Committeeman, resident cricket almanac and match strategy conversationalist;

Fiona Lyon – Club Treasurer and resident canteen lady (who makes a hell of a chicken roll); and

John Parkinson (JP) – out going Club Secretary and Lancashire comedian.

The support of President Andrew Fraser and all the other members of the Club Committee were brilliant to say the least. Having been present at many committee meetings this past season as an invited guest, I can assure all the clubs playing

Page 20: 2006-07 MWDCC PRESIDENT’S REPORT · 2019. 11. 27. · 2008-2009 A Fraser R Wiblin (Gen Mgr) F Lyon 2009-2010 A Fraser R Wiblin (Gen Mgr) F Lyon 2010-2011 A Fraser R Wiblin F Lyon

group, volunteers, supporters and sponsors that the club is administered exceptionally well by this great group of volunteers. Special thanks to Club Committeeman and long time friend Dave (Gainsy) Gainsford. Gainsy and I have known each other for nigh on twenty years and he was the key protagonist in getting me across to the club. I feel privileged to have him as a friend and also as a vocal supporter of my coaching approach. We had a theme this year in the club amongst the coaching and support staff and the complete playing group; that was … „EVERYONE is on the bus!‟ In other words, we are all in this together as a collective group and we will always work for one another and be there for one another, as we ride the bus to success. We don‟t want sky larkers and people that hang out of the back of the bus, nor those individuals who want to jump on and off when they feel like it, rather only those people who are prepared to go the full journey! Well the bus made it ... at least to the coveted Club Championship stop. Next season I will again call on the playing group to climb aboard „the bus to success‟, this time with an intent to ride it through to some Premiership stops whilst we ride it to defend our right to be called the best club in Sydney Grade cricket. When I look back over the season, I can‟t have any other feelings apart from a sense of pride as to what we achieved as a 1st grade group in 11/12. With an exodus of senior players from the previous season, it was time for some fringe players to step up and take responsibility to ensure we didn‟t let this be a rebuilding year and did everything possible to make it a year of success and triumph.

Unfortunately we have walked away empty- handed in regards to silverware but we can be very proud of contributing towards determining the club championship for the club as well as achieving some other worthy milestones throughout the year including qualifying for both the one day and two day finals.

There were some excellent individual performances throughout the season. Here is a brief run down on all the players that contributed during the year.

Nick Watkins – I can‟t speak any higher of what “Watto” sacrificed for our team this season. At the beginning of the year, I confronted him with taking on the wicketkeeping role when he only had little experience behind the stumps. He never hesitated in committing to the most demanding role in cricket and did an outstanding job for us. This show of selfless behaviour from “Watto” was invaluable to our side‟s success. Although I‟m sure he will be disappointed with his year with the stick, he can certainly hold his head high as he showed what a great team man he is and I hope there are many years to come for him at Manly.

Jack Ritchie – for someone who was considering not playing at the beginning of the season, I would like to think Jack had an enjoyable season and realised his love for cricket. I loved being out in the middle with „Cubby‟ to see him score his maiden 1st grade hundred. What I want to see from Jack now is take his game to the next level and consistently average over 30. There is no doubt he is good enough – he just needs to believe it and keep improving his game. A great team man and someone that everyone enjoys playing cricket with.

Cameron Merchant – “Nappa” came back to Manly this season with a refreshing attitude towards contributing as much as possible to helping the club and displaying a magnanimous approach in offering his 1st class experience to other players. I think this attitude played a massive part in his own success and took some pressure away from his own game. A fantastic year with the stick – when we needed him to step up, he did. I think he has now proven he is good enough to play first class cricket in Australia and if he continues working on his game and stays patient without putting pressure on it, then his time will come and he will be wearing that baggy blue in the near future.

Stephen O’Keefe – it is always great to be able to have the NSW captain come back to play for Manly. Even more so when it is someone like “Soky” who has an incredible sense of competitiveness and desire to win. I can see every single player in our dressing room lift 10% when Sok is around and this is a credit to his leadership capabilities and down to earth attitude. Hopefully he gets the success he deserves next season as NSW captain after what I‟m sure has been a testing year for him. Success is inevitable for you mate if you continue displaying your great attitude towards the game that has been so good to you.

Mitchell Cleary – after what was an indifferent start to the season for the “Beaver”, he showed great character in having such a strong finish. He could have easily taken a step backwards after not getting the results he desired; instead he trained harder and became more determined to succeed and did. A brilliant match-winning hundred in a crucial game against Blacktown showed maturity and discipline from a player that generally loves to play his shots. I hope this season kick-starts many more big years to come as I know you have the ability to be one of the best batters in the competition. Week in week out our best fielder and always gives his best for the side.

Luke Edgell – “Bomber” showed signs that he is ready to make his mark in 1st grade cricket during

Page 24: 2006-07 MWDCC PRESIDENT’S REPORT · 2019. 11. 27. · 2008-2009 A Fraser R Wiblin (Gen Mgr) F Lyon 2009-2010 A Fraser R Wiblin (Gen Mgr) F Lyon 2010-2011 A Fraser R Wiblin F Lyon

the season. He played some valuable innings in the middle order and also bowled some excellent spells of bowling whether it was coming on for a breakthrough or bowling economically in the shorter forms. It‟s now time for Lukey to become consistent at this level and, with more opportunities up the order, learn to accumulate big hundreds.

James Munting – it was great to see “Munter” once again continue to improve this season and was deservedly rewarded with selection in the NSW 2nd XI. This is a great advertisement for all the young bowlers through the club as Jimmy has worked his way up through the grades and worked harder on his bowling than anyone over the years. He is now recognised as one of the stand-out bowlers in Sydney Grade Cricket. With a bit of luck, this will convert into even higher representative honours next season and beyond. Well done on another great season. I would love to see Jimmy turn his bucketloads of batting talent into big runs over the next few years.

Corrie Boss – after disappointment through injury in 10/11, “Bossy” was like “a dog on heat” coming into the start of the season. Once the excitement of playing cricket again had died down, he really started bowling with great rhythm and pace and created a lethal opening bowling partnership with Munter. If his body can allow him to come back stronger in his 2nd and 3rd spells, then I am confident he can develop into a first class cricketer. Just like Munter, I would love to see his batting talent to convert into a lot more runs than we have seen thus far. A great team man who never leaves anything in the tank.

Ben Martin – Benny came across to Manly at the start of the season with a lot of expectation. He trained as hard as anyone through pre-season and showed glimpses of his class before injury cruelly put a premature end to his season. I have not seen as much talent in a bowler since Mark Cameron was at Manly and I genuinely believe if Benny can get it right then the sky is the limit. He‟s a genuine swing bowler which is few and far between these days and it is now up to him where he goes with all the talent. I‟m looking forward to watching him run in next season.

Mitch Coombs – the amount of talent I see in “Coombsy” is genuinely quite hard to explain. He is young, strong, bowls with good pace and hits the ball as hard and as clean as anyone in the club when he gets going. It is now up to “Coombsy” what he wants to do with it. He showed glimpses of brilliance in 1st grade this season but it is always hard for a young player to come from the country and succeed immediately. I really hope he makes the sacrifices required to reach his potential as a cricketer as I think he can

become a player of the highest class. It is a tough ask with all the travel but if you want it enough mate I think you have a real future in the game.

Andrew Lindsay, Aidan Baker, Matty Mee, Ben Smith and Nick McLachlan also played a big part in our side during the year. It was great to see “Billy” lead from the front as a senior player this season. “Flat” played some great cameos as he is capable of doing. As for Nick and Matty, it is great to see 2 local juniors make their mark in first grade. Both these guys have great attitudes and will be terrorising 1st grade batsmen for years to come. Benny Smith arrived late during the season and showed instant signs of a determined and hard cricketer that offers great value to the club.

It was also great to see Javed Badyari debut in 1st grade. He is a player with a lot of talent & has many successful years to come in the top grade.

As you can see from the above run down of all the players, we have had some great individual performances. The culture we created in the team was spot on and this goes down to a lot of hard work at training and everyone pulling together when needed.

I would like to thank Gilly for his hard work during the year. He put a lot of time into everyone‟s game and we are very grateful for it. Gilly has had a very successful first year as club coach and let‟s hope there are bigger and better things to come. I would also like to thank Davey Gardiner for all his hard work. He is much appreciated by all the boys around the sheds and now that we have had the luxury of him looking after us, I really don‟t know what we would do without him. Last but not least, a big thanks to Geoff Rogers. Geoffro has been around 1st grade for longer than anyone and it is always a pleasure to boast the best scorer in Sydney. These 3 guys have taken a lot of weight off my shoulders as captain and I thank all of you for your efforts. It is much appreciated.

It has been a pleasure to Captain 1st grade at this club I love so much and I am honoured every time I walk out wearing my Manly baggy. As I approach my 16th year at the club, a lot has changed but one thing that continues to remain the same is the culture. We should never take for granted how lucky we are to play for such a great club and this year that culture felt as strong as ever.

Thank you to everyone at the club for another great season.

All the best,

Timmy

2

nd Grade had a fantastic year, finishing number 1

and securing the minor premiership. To finish at the top of the competition ladder was a great reflection of the team‟s attitude to not only training, but also a constant belief that we could beat any side, and we were willing to do anything we possibly could to play on the day, whether or not the weather was permitting. I would just like to point out that the side we had throughout the year had a lot of changes, with players from 3

rd grade coming up to fill positions

that had been left due to players from 2nd

grade going up to 1

st grade. To all of those players that

came through 2nd

grade, I would like to thank you as you were an integral part of the side and we could not have done as well as we did without you, so thank you all. There weren‟t too many stand out performers/ performances throughout the year; we all seemed to perform individually when the side needed us to. One thing I would like to point out is that 2

nd

grade consisted of 80-90% of the Poidevin-Gray side which just goes to show you that the club‟s new generation of players are not only capable of playing higher grade cricket, but are actually standing out. Congratulations to Dylan Marshall for making the under 19‟s NSW side; throughout the year, Dylan was bowling extremely well and finished the year

as the second highest wicket taker in the 2nd

grade competition. I believe Dylan is going to go on and do special things – watch out for him! Congratulations also to Javed Badyari and Nick McLachlan for making their 1

st grade debuts this

season. I believe that there are many more 1st

grade games that both these guys will be a part of – congratulations. Also congratulations to Javed for scoring his first 100 for the club in the semi-final against Campbelltown. Along with Scott Patterson who also scored 100 in that semi-final, they went on to break the record for the highest third wicket partnership for the club in 2

nd grade –

well done guys. We also had two new faces at the club this year that played 2

nd grade: Greg Marks, a wonderful

wicket keeper and an even better bloke, and Mitchell Coombs, a wonderful batsman and bowler – the complete package. These two guys fitted straight into Manly, not only the cricket but the culture of the club, two wonderful guys that were a pleasure to play with throughout the year. Thank you to Gordon Currie and Fiona Lyon. I can‟t thank you both enough for all of your tireless efforts; the side would not have run as smoothly without all of your commitment week in and week out every Saturday, thank you to you both. In summarising the year, all of our achievements came about because of how tight all of us became on and off the cricket field. A wonderful bunch of boys to play cricket with and but also to share a beer with after the game. I believe that the culture we created in 2

nd grade this year is one that I‟m

looking forward to progressing into next season, and hopefully we can go one better for not only us but also the club, and win the 2

nd grade

premiership. Thank you to everybody who was involved behind the scenes, including the committee, sponsors and the coaching staff; without you guys, we could not have gotten as far as we did. And finally, to the players: thank you all for making my job so easy – all of your efforts at training and on the cricket field made the year a very enjoyable one – I can‟t wait to do it all again next year. Season 2011/12 is a season that all of the players who played 3rd grade should be proud of. In fact, it has been a season to remember and be proud of for every member of the MWDCC. To be crowned Club Champions, with the average age of our playing group only 22, is a truly remarkable achievement. I don‟t know if too many people around the Manly Warringah cricket community would have given us much of a chance of achieving this considering the number of senior players who moved on from last season, but credit must go to all the players this season for stepping up to the plate and contributing to a memorable season! There is no doubt the future of this great club is in good hands.

From 3rd grade‟s point of view, we can hold our heads up high. Losing a semi-final is always disappointing, but when you can walk away from the game knowing you have given it your all and fought until the end, then there is not much to be ashamed of. In the end we were beaten by Sutherland who, nobody can deny, were deserved premiers this season. Our team this season was extremely young and inexperienced. After the departure of 15 players from the top 3 grades from last season, we had to rely on players coming up through the grades from last year‟s successful 5th grade side and 4th grade side, all of whom excelled themselves. Whether they played 2 games or 14, I am extremely proud of them all. These players include 3 of last season‟s Green Shield side in Ryan Farrell, James Boyer and Mickey Edwards. These three players have very bright futures at this club and they all had fantastic results at this level this season. We also had Sam Gainsford play 2 games including the SF which is remarkable ... Sam played Green Shield this season. This year there were also some very frustrating results. Thanks largely to the weather gods, we experienced some very annoying cancellations and complete washouts. Two of these include the Northern Districts game where not a ball was bowled and the Randwick-Petersham day 2 wash-out, when we only needed 40runs for victory. Both these games could have seen us pick up 12 points and therefore finish higher on the ladder ... But I‟m sure all clubs feel the same. Which brings me to our Coaches … to Dean Gilchrist and Brett Penprase, I and all who played

under the 3rd grade umbrella this season, would like to thank you for your tireless efforts and dedication to this club over the pre-season and season combined. It is no surprise to me that the club went so well this year with the foundations laid early by these two blokes. GILLY, you are one seriously passionate bloke about the game of cricket and it shows in your meticulous approach to training, selections and game day preparations. Loved working with you mate, more silverware next year! Although I am looking forward to the off season mate.... my phone bill will be less than half during the winter months I‟m sure! BP, you are the perfect back up to Gilly and all the boys loved having you around this year. Thank you for all your efforts and dedication to the players. You should have been a Manly boy much sooner! There were some fantastic individual achievements as well as some nail-biting wins and some complete annihilations. There were close to 25 players selected this season in 3rd grade and all contributed in every way to our success. I feel that we have all learnt so much about winning games of cricket and playing hard but fair cricket. There are some bright futures amongst this group and it will be interesting to watch their progress over the coming seasons. Some of the highs of the season were:

Winning the first 9 rounds of the season.

Joel Mason's 150no against Parramatta in round 1.

Taylor Beatty and Reece Hodge putting together a 9th wicket partnership of 110 to defeat Penrith.

Taylor Beatty destroying Hawkesbury single handedly to take the figures of 7/16 off 8 overs.

Adam Gummer's 97 against North Sydney in a T20 game.

An outright win against Blacktown at the worst grounds complex in Sydney.

Chasing 155 against Sydney in the QF and winning by 4 wickets after being 4/10.

Mitch Pugh's majestic 120 in the SF against Sutherland.

Wrighty's graceful stage entrance and fluent match report after the Club Championship win!

As I have mentioned, there were about 25 odd players who helped us to the Semis this season. I will try and name as many as possible here but if I have forgotten anyone, please forgive me. Arshdeep Verdi, Louis Anderson, Nick McLachlan, Ed Burgess, Michael Lindsay, Tom Kaye, Mickey Edwards, James Boyer, Lance Stewart, Ben Smith, Greg Marks, Sam Alexander, Luke Grant … thank you all for your efforts – you helped 3rd grade and the club exceed many expectations. To the 12 players involved in the finals series... JOEL MASON Maso saved one of his best seasons until last. Started like a house on fire with 150no, then 60 in 2's. I‟m sure he would have liked to stay in 2's all season but, when he was with us, it was great to have his experience in our side. Joel won‟t be playing with us next year but I know he hasn‟t completely finished yet. Mate I really hope to take the field with you again one day. All the best next year. SAM WEBBER I was very happy to have Sam in 3's but I do feel that he got the rough end of the stick this year. Last season‟s 2nd grade keeper was always going to be a massive bonus for us and he showed that with his tidiness behind the stumps and his ability to accumulate the runs and bat for long periods of time at the top of the order. A great work ethic that will see him become our next long-term 1st grade keeper. ADAM GUMMER Gumms‟ first half of the year was outstanding. Made some big scores and was duly selected in 2's just after Christmas. Unfortunately he didn‟t quite kick on like I‟m sure he would have liked. Nevertheless, Gumms‟ hard work and dedication to himself and his teammates will see him kick on in the future. Knows his game well and, if he continues to plan his innings around that, he will score lots more runs in the higher grades. A great team man to have in your side. MITCH PUGH Mitch made the jump from last year‟s 5's to 3's this year and showed everyone that he has the technique and ability to become an outstanding batsman in higher levels. After a scratchy start to the season where he could easily make starts but couldn‟t go on to that big score he was after, he grew in confidence to become a real leader

amongst the group. His 120 in the semi was serious class of a batsman well beyond his years. DEAN READETT Burt Rockley really stood up and showed what he is capable of this year. Played all but 2 games in 3's and at times showed that he was really up for a fight when we needed him the most. Probably not as many runs as he would have liked but there were 2 occasions that come to mind where a 50 and a 30 probably won us the game. Was a real good team man to have around and was always working hard on his own game to improve. Deano, you should be proud of your dedication and personal performances this season. TAYLOR BEATTY A great debut season for Taylor with plenty of runs and wickets. Seemed to produce his best performances when we he was under lots of pressure from the opposition. His 7/18 against Hawkesbury was incredible and will never be forgotten by all who were there. Has lots of natural talent and a desire to perform at his best every single ball which certainly isn‟t a bad thing, but sometimes mate it won‟t always be perfect ... as long as you have a go, nobody will mind if it‟s not. Well done on a great first season! REECE HODGE Reece really showed this season that he is an all-round talent. No longer just a bowler, Reece showed us all that he is technically good enough with the bat to make big scores. Something that he did on 2 occasions. Both times he hit the ball cleanly and showed real patience. Lost his ability to swing the ball away from the batsmen like he did last year. This is something that probably needs to be worked on action wise in pre-season Reece, but with your Rugby commitments, it‟s up to you to find the time. RYAN FARRELL Ryan has the ability with bat and ball to become a first grade cricketer. Can really get the ball to turn and gave us glimpses of his talent with the bat in hand. Played every game that he was available for in threes and I hope he can look back on all those games and say that this season was a big learning experience for him, with excellent figures with the ball for a 17 year old leggie. However, Ryan, I feel that you need to be more confident in yourself both on the field and in the sheds. At times you can get a bit lazy and distracted but, if your confidence can grow, these little things will no longer be a part of your game. Well done this season Ryan, I‟m very proud of your efforts.

MICHAEL VISSER Viss joined us after Christmas and instantly made a difference to our bowling attack. Straightaway he was on the money and worked on just simply building pressure over after over. It worked and his stats back this up. Astonishingly our QF was his first ever finals game for Manly and I know he was really disappointed that we didn‟t continue to the final. Has more ability with the bat than he shows on game day, something that, along with his fielding, I‟m sure he will work on next season. Time to make yourself an all-rounder like Reece did this year mate. No matter where you bat, take the opportunity and push your way up the order otherwise chances may be limited. GEOFF ISAACS Probably a year Shaggers would like to forget. Not a great season with the bat but a couple of time he reminded us all just how good he is and why he has tasted first grade cricket. Took his demotion to 4's for the Semi extremely well and we were all so happy to hear that he got them through to the final with an innings of toughness under pressure. Mate, forget this season and come back stronger with the bat next season. Believe me, it can be done and it‟s a pretty good feeling when you prove to yourself that you can score the runs you desire. It was great to have you back around the club and I for one am looking forward to watching you bounce back next year. SAM GAINSFORD Sammy played only 2 games with us, one of which was the Semi, and showed us all that he is a very talented cricketer. Good control with the ball and good in the field with his energy adding something extra to our side. Well done on what you achieved this year Sammy.

Finally to the one bloke who "played" every game this season – ALLAN WRIGHT. Wrighty would do anything for any member of this club, whether in 3's or any other grade. He is a great clubman and he deserves all the thanks that come his way. Mate, I thank you personally and also on behalf of all who played third grade this year for all your efforts. You make our day so much easier and having everything organised for us makes my job easier. Always good for a laugh, as you proved with your entrance to the podium on the Club Champs night ... one of the all time great moments that was Wrighty ... Priceless! Also, thank you to our committee for all their hard work. Without you, this club just simply wouldn‟t be what it is. To our families, wives and girlfriends: thank you for understanding that we love the game we play and the club we play for. Thank you for supporting us all on and off the field. Thank you to all the parents: Hodges, Webbers, Pughs, Isaacs, Farrells, Gummers, Beatties and anyone else whom I have forgotten for all their help with the teas and scoring and supporting all the boys this season. It‟s great to have that support and have you at all our games. Congrats to all the Manly teams, coaches, committee, sponsors and supporters on a great season 2011/12. Club Champions! 3

The monkey is off the back of Manly fourth grade! For as long I have been associated with the club, fourth grade always had amazing talent but could never produce the winning results but this year was different and it came down to the playing group finding that winning feeling and not letting go of it through the whole season. We didn‟t start overly well losing our first two games in convincing fashion, seeing us dead last after the first two rounds but we turned it around to reach the grand final which, in looking back, is an amazing feat in itself. So what contributed to this turn around? As with any season, there are moments that define a season and a team. Here are a few that I feel contributed to our season: The return of Mick Lindsay and our first win After four years away from the game, the club saw the return of Michael Lindsay and he made an immediate impression the playing group, leaving a player from the opposition shaking in his boots and the team in stitches of laughter after the opposition player decided to run into Mick with his shoulder and Mick asked not to do that again in the politest manner he could. I don‟t think it was a fluke that this was the scene of our first win and, as we sat around in the middle of the field after the game, a belief came over the team that we could do something special and it was the first steps of turning our season around. The introduction of the Library Set Talking in the field can set the tone and apply pressure in the field but in round four, a different approach was applied with the introduction of the library set. This consisted of the head librarian, calling for it with the next over met by utter silence. At the conclusion of the over, an explosion of noise and energy would circulate around the team as we got ready for the next over. We often found that it was the library set that got us wickets and was a tactic regularly employed through the season. It was behaviours like the library set and the slow clap that kept everyone focused and made our cricket enjoyable.

The birth of the Curators It was round eleven against UNSW and we came off for rain early in the match. Sensing the importance for us to play and win the match, the boys were eager to play and, when the opportunity arose for us to get back on, the boys did everything in the power to get the field ready, with no help from the UNSW players. The eagerness of the young players was most evident with James Boyer and co running into the groundsman‟s shed, only to bring out three blowers to get the square dry. A game we went on to win and deserved to win. The outright loss against the NDs Everyone hates losing and losing outright is no fun – it was the wakeup call we needed as a team and changed our attitude for the rest of the season, an attitude that enabled us to win close games at the back end of the season. The win against Randy-Petes Wins at the back end of the season are important and this season, as the ladder was heavily congested, a loss meant we could drop out of the top six and a win would keep us there for another week. Only having 197 on the board, we knew we had to bowl well and Randwick-Petersham got off to a good start with 96 without loss. With the task getting tougher, the team stepped up a gear, taking 10 for 82 for a great win. Bowled Gainsford, Fielded Gainsford It was a game we should have won easily but things didn‟t go our way and we just didn‟t click. When Warren Evans aggravated a groin injury, we sent out reinforcements … enter David Gainsford. We found ourselves in the position that Mosman only needed seven runs to win from the final over with Sam Gainsford thrown the ball. With the last ball of the match, only three runs were needed. With the majority of second grade watching, Sam bowled the final dart for it to hit and met by a diving David Gainsford at short cover which stopped Mosman any chance of

victory or draw and secured not only second spot for us but the Club Championship, a special moment shared by father and son. First outright win We went through the whole season without winning one game outright or even with a bonus point but, in the semi final, we were able to defeat the minor premiers, Sydney University, outright. This was the team that easily defeated us in round two and it was a victory that illustrated how far we had come as a team. It was not just the moments like these that turn our season around but also the people that were involved throughout the season, from the president and the committee, all the coaching staff, the volunteers throughout the season and the players. First off, I would like to thank President Andrew Fraser and the committee for all the work off the field they do to ensure that the club runs smoothly. Also like to thank Allan Wright and John Parkinson for the time you both spend organising training and providing the cordial for the games and making sure the supplies are right for the game. Also like to thank Gene Ngamu and Tom Kelly from Green Options for their efforts in getting the ground ready each weekend. I would also like to pay special mention and thanks to a few people in making this season a successful and enjoyable one for fourth grade: Dean Gilchrist: First season at the club and right from the get go, you have challenged every one of us to strive to be better cricketers; you are passionate about the sport and the achievements of the clubs and the individuals under your command and this is shown in your approach to training. It is always hard settling in to new surroundings but you got stuck into it, with the club winning the club championship and 4 out of the 5 sides playing finals. Thanks for the season and I‟m sure you will be round again next season. Brett Penprase: The effort and work you did in helping me and the team warm up at the start of the season cannot be thanked enough – you allowed me to settle into my role for which I‟m very grateful. You were always willing to assist the team with training and team fielding sessions, thanks for your assistance during the season and see you next season. Greg Boyer: Although you were not with fourth grade the whole season, when you were there, you offered advice and an experienced eye on how the game was going. I would also like to thank you for scoring for the quarter final. Always

good to have you around, thanks for all your efforts. David Gainsford: The support you offered me as a captain and the rest of the team throughout the season was very much valued; you were always willing to assist in any way you could, even coming onto the field and assist in securing victory. Ted and Annette Lindsay: It was great have the both of you around supporting the team and, when it came to afternoon tea, there is nothing better than that famous „Lindsay dip‟ and your efforts with cooking some great burgers during our quarter final cannot go unsaid. Thanks again and loved having both around for the season. Kerri and Tony Burgess: I would like to thank you both for all your efforts – to Kerri for providing the boys with lollies, cooking them muffins for the final and to Tony for scoring for both the semi and grand final. To all the parents, families and the only two WAGS I would like to thank you all for endless support throughout the season and the efforts you did your getting your son, boyfriend or husband to the game. When it came to afternoon tea, there was never a bad spread and I would like to pay mention to all the mothers for their efforts to our afternoon tea. Like to thanks all the players that made fourth grade this season and for making it so special. I enjoyed playing with each and every one of you. Hope to see everyone next season. Ed Burgess: It is always special being able to play any type of sport with your brother and this season, playing alongside you was no different. To have the privilege of opening the batting with you and having you there, helped my batting a great deal. I know you didn‟t have the season you wanted but we all know you are a great talent and I hope you are back next season, just to enjoy your cricket. Tom Kaye: A good season was had by Tom, scoring 600 runs for the season. Although he didn‟t reach his full potential in 4

th grade, he

showed improvements through the season, especially in the mental side of the game and this was shown in the grand final, gritting out a 76. Keep working hard and stay patient – results will come your way and keep your head up. Louis Anderson: Although he didn‟t play many games in 4

th grade this season, he was very much

part of the side – a talented batsman with a great eye. The character you showed to give your spot in the grand final to Sam Gainsford just showed everyone in the club the person you are. I think

Page 40: 2006-07 MWDCC PRESIDENT’S REPORT · 2019. 11. 27. · 2008-2009 A Fraser R Wiblin (Gen Mgr) F Lyon 2009-2010 A Fraser R Wiblin (Gen Mgr) F Lyon 2010-2011 A Fraser R Wiblin F Lyon

you will admit yourself that you did not expect to be play third grade but it was well deserved. Look forward to seeing you next season. Michael Lindsay: Great to have you back at the club, playing with the boys apart from being king of the hill. You had the ability to bring the team together and enjoy each other‟s company and this was seen in many aspects of our game and played a major role in us reaching the grand final. Although you didn‟t have the season you wanted in terms of personal performance, coming back next season and getting back into the rhythm of things, I feel you will be back to your best. Sam Gainsford: Winning player‟s player was the icing on the cake for a great season you had. Your results this season were built upon the hard work you put in at training and this was seen with you taking little wickets at the beginning of the season to be joint top wicket taker in 4

th grade.

Your batting also improved and, although you didn‟t get the runs which you wanted, I‟m sure with a season of grade under your belt you will be mentally tougher, with runs not far away. Luke Grant: This season you have really shown what a club man you are. From being top wicket taker for 4

th grade last year, you willingly put on

the gloves at the start of the season and did a fabulous job. You were a leader amongst the team and this was seen in your attitude in the field and your innings against Randy-Petes and I predict you could find yourself being a captain in the future seasons. You have shown qualities that you are reliable player and are something a captain always looks for. James Boyer: Another season of grade and another grand-final. You are another great young player in the club who has a bright future. You have a great work ethic which will pay off with good results for you. Although you may not be entirely happy with your season, that is no reason to be disappointed with it – your work behind the stumps is impressive as you led the team well with your constant talk. Keeping is a tough trade and takes years to master but, with the work ethic you have, I am sure you will be a fine keeper-batsman in the future. Warren Evans: It was great to have you around the club again – you proved your weight in gold not only with your bowling performance in the semi final but also assisting the younger bowlers throughout the season. The advice and support you gave me throughout the season was invaluable and I thank you very much for that. I hope you to see around the club again for another season. Ash Virdi: You are a very talented cricketer who goes about their business very quietly. On your

day, you are a lethal bowler with your hooping in-swingers, as Eastern Suburbs found out, and you also consistently set the tone for the day with your opening spells. You are a handy batsman and got us out of a few situations this season and your fielding is sublime. With two full seasons under your belt, each resulting in playing in a grand final, I‟m tipping a good season for you next season. Mickey Edwards: A great season was had by you and this was seen with your selection in the NSW u17‟s team, reaching 2

nd grade and your inclusion

in the NSW u19‟s squad. The only disappointment for me as a captain was that I couldn‟t bowl you for longer spells. You have shown this season that you will be an awesome fast bowler in the future, take it off Mick! Sam Alexander: What a breakthrough year you had! To start in fifth grade and quickly find yourself playing third grade on the back of some awesome bowling and a good work ethic, is an awesome effort. Although you may be disappointed with some aspects to the season, I feel that you will be a stronger player mentally for it. You are great to have around in the sheds and good to play alongside with, just remember we play cricket because we love it and to have fun with the people alongside us. Don‟t lose sight of this because this is when you play your best cricket. Jacob Graham: Your first season here at Manly was a solid one. I know you may be disappointed with just missing the final 11 during the finals but your season was far from a disappointment – you showed that you can be a powerful all-rounder. You bowl in consistent area and showed that you can bowl very well at the death as was shown in your 5 wicket haul. Your batting can stabilise the order or very easily consolidate a good start. You have a great work ethic and your heart is always in the right place and, with this attitude, results will come your way. Sam Hole: You are a real talent and a player for the future; first season of grade and were impressive from round 1. I know you may be disappointed in finishing the season in 5

th grade

but, with a good off-season and good consistent results, I see no reason why you can‟t be playing third grade next season. You have great maturity in your batting and a handy bowler to have. Looking forward to seeing what you can do next season. Jarrod Rawlings: Having some great trials, you came into the season in some good form; unfortunately, lady luck was not on your side in some early innings and it saw a loss in confidence. You need to stay with it as results will eventfully come your way. You showed at the back end of the season that you have it, with

Page 41: 2006-07 MWDCC PRESIDENT’S REPORT · 2019. 11. 27. · 2008-2009 A Fraser R Wiblin (Gen Mgr) F Lyon 2009-2010 A Fraser R Wiblin (Gen Mgr) F Lyon 2010-2011 A Fraser R Wiblin F Lyon

some good innings with Dave. Work hard on your mental game to consolidate your good starts. Billy Darcy: A good opening batsman with a solid technique, unfortunately you could not find your feet in fourth grade after good performances in 5s. Confidence is the biggest issue and you need to believe that you are good enough to be playing where you are and, once you believe that, your batting will see the results. Tom Sky: Came to the club late and showed some signs that he can be a good player for the future – a talented keeper and a handy batsman. I‟m sure with a full season under your belt we will see your full talent in the coming seasons.

I would also like to say thank to Adam Parkinson, Matt Cranney and Peter Lindsay for making themselves available – you boys are always good to play with and each of you contributed to the side‟s success this season – as did all the players that played fourth grade this season and I would like to thank you for the season; Taylor Beatty, Matt Fox, Jordan Daly, Will Jonkers, Mitch Pugh, Reece Hodge, Dean Readett, Luke Mannell, Cody Bruce and Sam Webber.

th Grade missed out on the silverware this

year, it was still a very satisfying season for the young squad. 28 players contributed to a final position of 7

th on the ladder. Ultimately it was a

combination of wet weather and missed opportunities that cost the team its chance of finals cricket and the chance to defend title. That said, the positives far outweigh these facts, with many fine cricketers wearing the Manly cap for the first time, who are sure to be around the club for many years to come. During the first half of the season, the new “Pathway” junior development program was put to the test. Unavailability in the higher grades meant that many Shires players were brought into the grade set-up through this system. What a great initiative from Manly and Warringah Cricket Clubs. A clear defined link between Shires and Grade, well planned by passionate locals, to benefit cricket in the district. This program is a winner. Run by Pathway Pat, Greg Boyer and supported by every branch of cricket on the Peninsula, the steps through Saturday morning cricket, to Shires, to Grade, are now set out before promising players and even at this early stage is a model for other associations to follow. Greg and Dave Gainsford can be very proud of what they have done for cricket in the area. The Pathway program will evolve and be refined over time, with both Manly and Warringah cricket cashing in for years to come. Direct from the pathway and trials came Sam Gainsford, Sam Alexander, Cody Bruce, Jacob Graham, Will Jonkers, Billy D’Arcy, Stu Wiblin, Cam Toomey, Josh Wigney, Zac Trewartha, James Crombie, Mat Cole, Liam Tully, Brad Wilson, Will Outred and Jack Garay, while Jordan Daly played when school commitments allowed. Some of these players moved up the grades, others were sent back to Shires to find form, while a few formed the basis of the 5

th

Grade team for the season. The great thing was the communication between the clubs and the fact that the system was working. Players were being rewarded for good performance and learnt that runs/wickets were needed to stay in the team.

The season started well, winning 4 out of 5, before losing the next 4 straight to tumble out of the top 6. In all of those 4 losses, bar 1 20/20 game, the team were in a winning position but failed to get over the line. Looking back now, lessons were learned by everyone involved that will hopefully be remembered in the future when put in a similar position. It is always a pleasure to see someone stand up and grab their chance. Sam Alexander did just that in the early games. Fit from off season training, SA grabbed 5 for 17 (7 for the match) v Parra and 5 for 50 v Uni to leap straight into 4

th

Grade. What a great story. Sam had the desire to play grade cricket and went out and worked hard to get there. There will be many grade seasons ahead for this club favourite. Others to shine with the bat at this time were Billy D’Arcy, Jacob Graham, Mat Cole and Jordan Daly, who all scored their first 50‟s for the club. The standout performance from the early rounds came from Louis Anderson. A watershed innings of 201 v Easts in Round 4 was such a great moment for Louis, showcasing his natural ability with a new found desire to play a long innings. Just about all of his runs were scored off “proper” cricket shots, ridiculously timed to all parts of Snape Park. Once again, like SA, Louis was lost to higher grades for the rest of the season and rightly so. The results that would ultimately define the 5

th

Grade season occurred from Rounds 6-9. All losses that just needed an ounce of luck to turn the result around. Someone to pull off a direct hit, take the spectacular catch, or score the match winning runs. Unfortunately the side was out of luck and out of form. From this point on, 5

th Grade

were playing catch up to make the finals. Training was intensified, some players were dropped and a new approach was needed. Brad Wilson was the standout performer during this run of outs. Brad started the season late after injury, but cemented his place at once, with his pacy left arm swingers to open the attack. Brad went on to take 13 wickets at the excellent average of 11 for the year in a great debut season for the club.

After Round 9 overall player numbers were up in the club and teams were looking stronger across the Grades. This meant that 5

th Grade had a real

quality look about it. Jordan Meredith was brought in for his customary 2 or 3 games and contributed with both bat and ball. The biggest change to happen to the team was that Ross Trewartha committed to playing (and training) for the remainder of the season. Having someone like Ross around was truly inspiring to the younger players and he backed it up with performances that matched his experience. 327 runs at 82 (6 innings) flowed from Ross‟s bat in a sensational comeback to the crease. His 156 no in the washed out game against Randy Petes was a pleasure to watch against a decent bowling attack. I really hope that Ross decides to go around again next season. The benefit to those around him will be obvious. Sam Hole was another to stand out in the run home. Probably more noted as a batsman, Sam‟s left arm orthos reaped him 15 wickets at 7 (6 matches). More flight and turn paid dividends for Sam, who is a very good listener/learner of instructions. While his batting will no doubt continue to develop, Sam‟s bowling should not be dismissed by his captains in the years to come. 5

th Grade were undefeated from Round 10

onwards, but as luck would have it, missed out on vital points with 3 wash outs. With the side in form, we were capable of going deep into the finals. Results from other games went against us and that was that, so near to another finals appearance, yet so far. To me it doesn‟t really matter. 5

th Grade is the entry level to the club and

young players should be treated accordingly, with patience. Winning games is obviously the goal and it‟s easy to get caught up in the win at all costs mentality, which I was guilty of at times this year after the success of the previous season, but the development of players for higher grades is and must be the aim. With such a young playing roster, only the best will climb the grade ladder, which makes 5

th grade even more vital to the

continued success of the club in the future. I don‟t have enough space to write about all the players that have played this year, but Will Jonkers, Billy D’Arcy, Cody Bruce, Liam Tully, Stu Wiblin, Mat Cole, Josh Wigney, James Crombie and Zac Trewartha all showed glimpses of what they are capable of and played the majority of the season in 5

th Grade. Jonks will go

on to take a heap of grade wickets in the years ahead, while Zac, James and Josh are just beginning their senior cricket careers, with loads of promise. Cody, Stu, Liam and Matt are probably at the crossroads. Only hard work and refinement of technique will see them get the runs they need.

Billy on the other hand, has the batting tools already. Patience and technique are pre requisites of an opening batsman and Billy has both. The only thing missing at the moment is the consistent big scores. I‟m sure those scores are just around the corner as Billy continues his Manly career. Two other guys I would like to mention are club legend Rowley Alexander and Pete Lindsay. Rowley once again showed his passion for the club, filling in as skipper for a couple of games early on, while Pete decided to have a run later in the year, ending up in 5

th Grade for the last 3

games. Both champion blokes who were a pleasure to have around. Mention must also be made of the other players not noted above. Thanks to Tom Sky, Mat Fox, Jim Ryan and Dave Gainsford (sorry if I missed anyone out) who all took the field for 5

th Grade

this year with Gains taking a hot chance off Wood Duck junior, to seal the game against Easts. Congratulations to all who have pulled on the Waratah cap this season, in all the Grades. To win the club championship was as good as it gets. Every player contributed, every player put in as much as he could, or was allowed to, culminating in a great celebration down at Manly Oval as the last result came in, including the famous nude run. An amazing achievement when you think about it and one that everyone should be really proud of. Not a Premiership win this season (and I know how 2

nd and 4

th Grade must be hurting) but as a

club, a season to remember. Special Thanks: Gilly – First year in and already a club championship winning coach. Thanks mate for your skills and advice. Your work ethic is second to none and you certainly did the hard yards for the club, succeeding in brining a tougher edge to the playing group. BP – Again a new face to the club and a guy who has been responsible for lifting standards in the field across the grades, with his innovative drills. Thanks for your commitment to the lower grade players BP, really appreciated. Dollars – Once again the Manly legend carried the pencils for 5

th Grade and did a wonderful job.

You may struggle some days mate with your health, but rest assured that you are as vital a part of the team as any player. People like you do not come along very often and the job is yours as long as you want it.

Manly Captains & Committee – Tim, Ryan, Craig & Max can all feel satisfied to have contributed to the clubs success. All of you are passionate about the club and it shows to everyone involved. To Ryan and Max, my utmost respect for guiding your lads to the GF.

I would also like to thank Maso and Gumms for their website work. All the Monday News, team selections, social events and more are posted by these 2 great clubmen. Your contributions do not go unnoticed guys. The committee was again led expertly by Frase, who kept an eye on results in 5

th Grade all year.

Frase and all of the committee are to be congratulated on their excellent work behind the scenes.

The Poidevin-Gray squad for the 2011/12 Season looked quite promising, and there was a quiet confidence that we would be real contenders for some silverware. The majority of boys from the previous season were re-signed by new coach Dean Gilchrist, while there was some fresh blood in the squad such as the imported superstar Mitch Coombs and the up-and-coming tweaker Sam Alexander. We kicked off the season with the first of three T20s, taking on Bankstown at Bankstown Oval. On the back of Gilly‟s fail-proof T20 approach, we started with a win and managed to back it up in our final two T20s against Gordon and Campbelltown. So needless to say our campaign started wonderfully, but we needed to take our form into the upcoming four One Dayers. We faced our first hurdle in Rd 4 against Blacktown, where a poor batting performance meant we were bundled out for 98 on a road. However, all the boys showed great determination to get over the line in the next three games in what were often nail-biting finishes. This ensured we secured a PGs finals birth for the first time in a while, finishing 4

th on the ladder with 6 wins and a

loss. So we ventured down to Hurstville Oval for our QF match up against St George, and the gods weren‟t on our side in the rain-reduced contest. We did extremely well to reduce Saints to 170 off 40+ overs, however as was the case against Blacktown, no one put their hand up with the bat and we were rolled for 130 in a disappointing performance. It ended an impressive campaign for the boys, and I‟m sure we can all take a lot out of it and come back bigger and better next year. Our bowling line up was definitely our strength this year. The pace attack was ridiculous, with Matty Mee, Nick McLachlan, Mitch Coombs and Matt Alexander all proving a nightmare for opposition batsmen. This was backed up by a variety of tweaking options, with the classy offie Dylan Marshall well supported by Javed Badyari and Sam Alexander. If required, we also had options of swing-king Taylor Beatty or the medium pace variety of Reece Hodge or even Mitch Pugh.

Evidently the quality and variety here made Manly arguably the best bowling attack in the competition. Most wickets went to McLachlan, who had a remarkable year in both PGs and regular grade. He made a name for himself around the club as being the go-to man with the ball, and this was especially called on in PGs as he consistently did the job of keeping the runs down and picking up poles at the death. He finished with 13 wickets @ 17.38, with an economy that was way too low for a death-bowler. Bowling average went to the magnum ego of Dylan Marshall (10 wickets @ 15.50), who was always reliable with his accurate offies in the middle overs. I think he definitely matured as a bowler this season and he knows his art extremely well. If he manages to maintain consistent body-language in the future then higher honors are a certainty for him. In terms of performances with the bat, it was more of a mixed season for the boys, but there were a few positive signs for the future. Taylor Beatty backed up his performances with the ball and proved he truly is a future 1

st grade all-rounder.

His high score of 72 made the difference in the Sydney Uni match, and you‟ve never met a bloke with more humility. Pugh was his usual self, showing glimpses of his immense talent, class and timing, but still not having the most memorable season. Coombsy also displayed his all-round ability by producing a match-winning half-century, but the star with the bat was undoubtedly Tom Kaye. Tommy had an amazing PGs campaign this year and he was probably the real revelation of the season. I felt he didn‟t live up to his potential in all the grade games, but his talent and composure really shone through in PGs as he was consistently the star with the willow, despite being the youngest in the team. He finished with an impressive 222 @ 37.00, and he single-handedly managed to hold our batting line-up together in almost every match. Tommy took out both the batting aggregate and average, and with about

four PGs seasons left in him, he‟s definitely one to watch for the future. All in all, it was a great season for the U21 Waratahs, as we combined perfectly to come out on top of some tight contests and make a real push to reach the finals. Special thanks have to go to the tireless efforts of the coaching staff and

all the other helpers throughout the season. Gilly came on board and provided a real feel of determination and drive throughout the season which helped us to get over the line in some close games. Lozza, Wrighty and Fi were always there to support us and make life easier which was much appreciated.

Go Manly! Adam Gummer

After a successful pre-season with the DCA squad, the expectation was there that this team would probably continue in the same vein on the back of solid wins and strong momentum. There were a few changes, with Matt Levene, Sam Gainsford and Zac Trewartha all being selected from the Under 15‟s squad. Sadly some players had to miss out when the time came to cut the squad from 22 to 12, and this was not an easy decision. Despite a school trip to Vietnam just before the start of the programme, I felt that we were as fresh and ready as we could be. Our first game at Sydney University on the Number 2 Oval was a nail biting day; we didn‟t manage to score enough runs, with only the Captain, Boyer, making 49 and too many players giving their wickets away too cheaply meant that we didn‟t even utilise our quota of overs. But our bowling and fielding in general was excellent and with one more chance being held we might have pulled off an unlikely victory. At Coogee Oval two days later it was to be the same story; batting first we could only post 168 off our 60 overs and the hosts passed us 5 down. Matt Levene had to pull out with a back injury which made a difference but the mere fact that James Crombie was the top scorer with 47 told the story. Round 3 was washed out at Manly Oval against Bankstown with the visitors facing only two balls (one of which was legal) before the heavens opened and play was called off at 2.30pm. A Draw. Christmas, it seemed in hindsight, came at the right time. With 4 games to go we still were a chance of making the Finals and the game at Asquith Oval on a poor wicket against Brett‟s former club was another nail biter but that boys fought through having posted a low score of 127 (including a collapse of 7 wickets for 33 runs) and won by 12 runs. There were scenes of joy but I think more like relief. Round 5 we were back at Manly Oval and on a beautiful wicket Campbelltown Camden only made 187 thanks to some tight bowling and

determined fielding. We were heading towards victory when a tumble of wickets (5-22) left us one run short after a dubious LBW decision against Matt Levene. Dejectedly the boys left the wicket only to find out that there had been a miscount and in fact we had tied the match. It was a pity though because we really should have won this game with a crowd building up of grade players set for training and the Club Coach looking on. Anyway points shared was better than none at all. Two days later we were back at Manly Oval against Gordon coached by former Kiwi Test opener Bruce Edgar whose team was unbeaten at this stage. Gordon got off to a terrible start losing some of their star top order and were struggling all day to post a competitive total. In the end they made 175 and our Vice captain Sam Hole notched up his top score of 70 in partnership with his Captain James Boyer who made 58. we won by 6 wickets in a confident and convincing display of all round cricket. What was sadly to be our final match was played at home against Blacktown. They were inserted and could only muster 9 for 141 on a good wicket thanks to excellent bowling from our top seamers, Levene, Trewartha and Wigney with 7 wickets between them. Our chase faltered as their two opening bowlers quickly made inroads into our top order as Hamish Ferguson battled on to make 38. Luckily James Crombie was there at the end to finish the job off to cap off a fine season where he had grown in maturity as a batsman and occasional bowler despite a nagging hamstring injury. A 5 wicket win was enough for the team to feel that they had performed well enough in the tough matches and reflect on what might have been. To have ended up unbeaten in 2012 with 3 wins and a tie (which could so easily have been a win too) was a first class effort. The bowling and fielding were the highlights for me and the increasingly competent captaincy by James Boyer who led the team well throughout. Three players who will return next year will take a great deal from this season, Levene, Trewartha and Gainsford. Each one of these Under 15 players will need to carry the burden of the bowling in

Page 56: 2006-07 MWDCC PRESIDENT’S REPORT · 2019. 11. 27. · 2008-2009 A Fraser R Wiblin (Gen Mgr) F Lyon 2009-2010 A Fraser R Wiblin (Gen Mgr) F Lyon 2010-2011 A Fraser R Wiblin F Lyon

2012-13 and remind themselves of the need to value their wickets (and get that message across to their team mates). Joined by Jake Ellis who made a cameo appearance and proved to be a player of some talent, next summer‟s campaign should realise more success if these key points are developed. I will be watching with interest. I would like to conclude this section of this report by saying that it was a pleasure for me to coach this group, including the extended group we had in October and to express my sadness that not all those who tried out could be picked. Weather and injuries always seem to get in the way but it was the spirit of these young fellas that I was impressed with; despite some low team scores, their dedication to fight to the last was outstanding and no opposition walked away with a victory. Added to that, the camaraderie that prevailed in the team was very special and there is no doubt that the nature and politeness that existed within this group will carry them far in the future. Well done Greenies! I would like to end my last Report with some comments about those who have really made this job worthwhile. David Gainsford who took on the Manager‟s role and for helping along the way, Andrew Fraser for his support, Gordon Currie for taking on the scoring role this summer and Donny Sellin for his statistical work and photography. Also Nick White for his scorebox duties.

In addition it would be crazy for me not to mention Ian Bird who has had a wonderful season with the lens and nearly had a game too! Thanks for your support Birdy. I would particularly like to mention those parents who lent a hand, especially David Gainsford and Greg Boyer; without their help when rain threatened and Fiona in the canteen with her by now famous DIP, the job would have been barely feasible. My congratulations extend to Ryan Bonnor and his 2

nd Grade side who came so far, and to Max

Burgess for his efforts in getting 4th Grade to the

Grand Final. And thanks of course to my Assistant, Brett Penprase, new to the Club this year, who has settled in well and got to know the lads, some of whom will be under his sole care next year as I stand down from my coaching role.

My final word of thanks goes to Gene Ngamu, our curator at Manly Oval who provided us with some great decks this year and was very helpful to us whenever rain threatened. Good luck, to you all; it has been a wonderful experience these last 4 years trying to help young players develop into good cricketing men. I will be watching with interest from behind the white line. My journey ends here, but for others it is just beginning. I am excited for you all.

Go Manly
