Name 2 living and 2 nonliving things in an ecosystem.
Living 1. Plants
2. AnimalsNon-Living1. Water2. Rocks
Which type of organisms make their own food?
Producers: PLANTS
Name four different types of ecosystems.
Pond, Ocean, Forest, River
What is the primary energy source on the Earth?
THE SUN!
Explain how an ecosystem can be self-sustaining when
there is no human interaction.
As organisms grow they are held in check by other
factors in the environment such as depletion of food, disaster, and an increased
number of predators.
Name 4 things that would make a food chain.
Sun-Producer-Consumer-Decomposer
Explain in you own words the difference between a food
web and food chain.
A food web is all food chains in a community. In a food chain, an animal may eat more than one organism.
What will happen if all of the plants died in an ecosystem?
Animals would have to relocate or die.
Describe the food chain in your terrarium and aquarium.
Producer (grass, green plants)Consumer (grasshopper)
Consumer/Scavenger (pill bug)Decomposer (rotting leaf matter)
Give examples of fresh water and salt water ecosystems including
producers, consumers, and decomposers.
Examples include:Fresh water: pond snail, fish,
eloda plantSalt water: crab, sea snail,
seaweed
What does an herbivore eat to get energy?
Plants
Which organisms recycle decaying plants and animals into
something useful?
Decomposers
Describe how the sun is the Earth’s main energy source.
Energy comes from the sun’s rays to heat the Earth.
Nature recycles decaying plants and animals. How is energy from the soil used in
an ecosystem?
It puts nutrients into the soil that nourish new plant growth.
If the rabbits in a forest are overeaten by foxes, what
effects would occur due to this scarcity?
The hawks, for example will relocate or die without their main
food source.
Name 3 types of pollutants.
Rock Salt, Acid Rain, Fertilizer
How does acid rain impact our environment?
Too much acid rain changes PH level of the soil and water which disturbs the balance of
the ecosystem.
Using a PH scale, Mr. Brancaccio was checking a
liquid to find whether it was an acid, base, or neutral. What is indicated if the PH scale range
is between 2 and 4?
The lower the number, the more acidic the liquid is.
How does an automobile pollute the environment?
It burns fossil fuel (gas) and produces dangerous gases out of the tailpipe. It uses many gallons of oil in the
engine and transmission for routine maintenance.
What would happen if we fail to reduce the amount of
pollutants into the environment?
What can we do to be responsible citizens?
The balance of Earth’s ecosystem will be destroyed.
RECYCLE! Do More With Less…
Name a saltwater ecosystem.
Ocean
Describe how you would test the PH of soil with (PH) litmus
paper.
Press PH paper into the soil until it gets wet.
Where is the oxygen coming from in your aquarium?
green plants
What is the purpose of using models in science?
We use models to simulate something larger and predict how
they will work in the real world.
Describe a situation when a change in an organism’s
habitat could be beneficial.
1. An aquatic snail is healthier when humans clean the trash out of a
creek.
2. If people stop using fertilizer, the creek will no longer be polluted.
3. Using compost instead of fertilizer in a garden will be healthier for
organisms.
