At the 2008 US Open, the player challenge systemfor electronic line calling—known as the “ChaseReview”—will change from its current two challengesper set plus one for tiebreakers to three challenges perset plus one for tiebreakers. The additional challengeper set is being added to increase usage of the playerchallenge system, while helping to create a uniformprotocol across the pro game. With this addition, allprofessional tennis events where an electronic line call-ing system is in place—including all Olympus US OpenSeries events this summer—will be using the “3 plus1” protocol. In 2006, the US Open became the first Grand Slam to
use electronic line calling technology, which was intro-duced to improve officiating for players while increasingthe intrigue and excitement for in-stadium fans and tele-vision viewers. The new technology was immediatelyembraced by officials, players and fans alike.
