Whut has struck me just recently is that we take part in lots of activities particularly up the hi1ls but what happens if someonegot hurt. Do we have anyone who can administer First Aid? A serious question I thought? To this end I have been doing somebackground work on finding out about First Aid Courses. Is does not just apply to us but to everyone in our family so if theywant to take part then they would be most welcome (I must add it is for 16 years old and older as there are separate coursesfor below that age).

I haue written to both the St Andrews Ambulance and the British Red Cross to see what they can offer. The replies are as fol-lows:

British Red Cross2 hour Life Support (with attendance voucher) €10 per person plus VAT4 hour Save A Life (with a card of commendation) f,15 per p€rson plus VATNote: This reply was by letter.

St Andrews Ambulance2 hour CPR f 10 per person (f 100 minimum chargeJ Maximum 12 people on the training.4 hour Basics on First Aid S15 per person (S150 minimum charge) Maximum 12 people on the training.(The minimum charge means that we need to have l0 people on the course)Note: This reply was by telephone.

Ann yOU INTERESTED ? and if so can you let me know and I can go ahead and start putting the organising of it together.I think f 15 for the Basics on First Aid is a small price to pay to leam how to help someone, not just a club member but it couldbe someone in your familyI am really serious about this event so please do not let the normal apathy reigns scenario prevail, please think aboutit andgive me your response

I have been approached for the Radio Club to put on demonstration days at both the Port Seton and Haddington Gala Days.

Port Seton Gala Day - Saturday 3'd June.Haddington Gala Day - Saturday l2*August

I think these are worth while doing and have said that we will take part. I know we have done a few of these events in thepast and the interest shown is ZERO. Like yourselves I have often thought why bother, but then I think that well we might just"reach" someone one day and if we manage that then we have made a gfeat achievement. I also ask myself, how do we reallylet the public know about our hobby, it is very diffcult, and let us be honest the demonstration station is as good as any. Iknow that there are drawbacks in the sense that they, the public, just can not talk to who ever we contact. That is not our faultbut by the way that our license dictates. Maybe one day it will change but until then we can only demonstrate.

At the above events Landels GM4XZZ is hoping to demonstrate slow scan so hopefully that might draw peoples attentionrather than someone talking into a microphone. This raises the question in my mind, what do you think we should put togetherfor these types of events? Any ideas? There must be something, which we can use to draw "Joe public".

Let us go and get some new recruits for this marvellous hobby of ours.Bob GM4UYZ

Another generally quiet month this time. Everyone seems to have far too many other things to do at this time of the year.Despite this some pretty good QSOs have still been made. Here are the details...

This month, in his usual laid back way, Wallace MMOAMV says that "I guess the highlight is Karachi, my first AP". Defi-nitely a good one so far as I'm concerned Wallace! Other new additions from "The Shack By The Sea" were... l8Mtlz :Spain@A), Scotland(GM), Japan(JA), Austria(OE); 2l\&Iz: Israel(4X), Croatia(9A), Portugal(CT), Germany@L), Estonia@S), France(F), Hungary(HA), Finland(OH), Brazil(PY), Sweden(SM), Bosnia(T9), Ukrain(UT), Latvia(Yl); 24lvfrIz:Pakistan(AP), Spain@A), Italy(I) That adds a total of 20 to Wallaces Itr total.

No comments this month from Bob GM4UYZ. He seems to be just as busy as ever with limited time on the radio again. Iknow he has done a bit of contesting on 70MHz and appears to be really enjoyrng 10m with his new "coax" antenna. As a re-sult Bob's additions this month are... 28MHz : Croatia(9A), Turkey(TA), European Russia(UAl), Canada(VE), MacedoniaQ3); 70MHz : Isle Of Man(IO74) An increase of 5 on FIF and 2 on VHF .

David GM4WLL says "been a little more active this month"! He certainly has been with "little" being the operative wordlHowever, as a sign of things to come he finished with'time I got my finger out"l David's only addition this month was...7}MItz: G(IO95). One more on VHF for his total.

At GM0CLN it has been very quiet, which seems to be the general norm this month. The main reasons being a radio fault, in-terior decorating and major earthworks in the back garden (not radio related I'm sad to sayl). In between times I did managea small selection of contacts which score for the tables. One of them shows that there still is some life on 144MHz! I made ageneral CQ call to the North West (looking for a maritime mobile station who I knew was in the area) and I was answered byGM0PWS in the Outer Hebrides! The new ones were... 28MHz : Fernando de Norohna(PY0F); l44IvIIlz: Scotland(1068). Just 1 more on IIF and I on WIF.

From south of the border, John MOBEX, without a doubt, has this months biggest increase. He has obviously been extremelybusy and states the following highiights. "South Shetland Islands IIF0POL" which, once the QSLs have been collected, willallow him to claim the IOTA 100 award. Others he mentions are. .. St Helena(ZD1\, Galapagos Is(HC8), Juan Fernandez Is(CEAZ), Fernando de Norohna(PY0F), Sakhalin(UA0F), Grenada(J3), Hawai(KH6), Ivory Coast(TU5), French Guiana(FY5)and finally E2gDx(Thailand, HS) from Koh Nu in the Malay Peninsula South East Island Group. John is particularly pleasedwith this last one as it is a newly issued IOTA (AS-145) and also because HSO/G3NOM, a Stockport Radio Society member, was on the expedition. I wont go into further detail, as we would all still be here this time next month reading the list, butsuffices to say that John now has 193 more on FIF.

Jim MMOBQI keeps up his relentless pace with another large increase. I can't give you full details as I was only given bandtctals but Jim states his "best of the bunch " as l0MHz : Taiwan(BV); 14W{z: Malawi(7Q); zlIvIHz: Maldives(8Q),Philippines(Dl\; z{Ivftlz; Vietnam(3W); 28MI{z : Ghana(9G). In total Jim adds a huge 77 on IIF and 15 on VHF.

Thank you again fior your input this month. Please make sure that I receive the next updates by Wednesday 17th May at thelatest. Good DX wtd73 unlil next month.
