    PRECAUTIONS ON SUPPLE-MENTAL RESTRAINT SYSTEM

This Supplemental Restraint System (SRS)section contains important information con-

cerning the driver and passenger supple-mental front air bags, supplemental side airbags and pre-tensioner seat belts.

Supplemental front air bag system:Thissystem can help cushion the impact force tothe face and chest of the driver and frontpassenger in certain frontal collisions.

Supplemental side air bag system (if soequipped): This system can help cushionthe impact force to the head and the chest

area of the driver and front passenger incertain side impact collisions. The supple-mental side air bag is designed to inflate onthe side where the vehicle is impacted.

These supplemental restraint systems aredesigned to supplement the crash protec-tion provided by the driver and front passen-ger seat belts and are not a substitute forthem. Seat belts should always be correctlyworn and the driver and front passenger

seated a suitable distance away from thesteering wheel, instrument panel and frontdoor finishers. (See Seat belts later in this

section for instructions and precautions onseat belt usage.)

The supplemental air bags operate onlywhen the ignition switch is in the ON orSTART position.

After turning the ignition key to the ONposition, the supplemental air bag warn-ing light illuminates. The supplementalair bag warning light will turn off afterabout 7 seconds if the system is opera-tional.

    WARNING

The supplemental front air bags ordi-narily will not inflate in the event of aside impact, rear impact, roll over, orlower severity frontal collision. Al-ways wear your seat belts to helpreduce the risk or severity of injury invarious kinds of accidents.

The seat belts and the supplemental

front air bags are most effective whenyou are sitting well back and uprightin the seat. The front air bags inflatewith great force. If you are unre-strained, leaning forward, sittingsideways or out of position in anyway, you are at greater risk of injuryor death in a crash and may alsoreceive serious or fatal injuries fromthe supplemental front air bag if youare up against it when it inflates.

Always sit back against the seatbackand as far away as practical from thesteering wheel or instrument panelAlways use the seat belts.

Keep hands on the outside of the

steering wheel. Placing them insidethe steering wheel rim could increase the risk that they are injuredwhen the supplemental front air baginflates.

Supplemental side air bag (if soequipped):

The supplemental side air bag ordi-narily will not inflate in the event of afrontal impact, rear impact or lowerseverity side collision. Always wearyour seat belt to help reduce the riskor severity of injury in various kindsof accidents.

The seat belts and the supplementalside air bag are most effective whenyou are sitting well back and uprightin the seat. The side air bag inflateswith great force. Do not allow any-one to place their hand, leg or facenear the side air bag on the side ofthe seatback of the front seat. Do notallow anyone sitting in the front seatto extend their hand out of the win-dow or lean against the door. Whensitting in the rear seat, do not hold

    Supplemental front air bag system

The driver supplemental front air bag is lo-cated in the center of the steering wheel. Thepassenger supplemental front air bag ismounted in the dashboard above the glovebox.

These systems are designed to meet op-tional certification requirements under U.S.regulations. They are also permitted inCanada. The optional certification allowsthe front air bags to be designed to inflate

somewhat less forcefully than previously. However, all of the information, cautionsand warnings in this manual still apply

    and must be followed.

The front air bag system is designed tinflate in higher severity frontal collisionalthough it may inflate if the forces in another type of collision are similar to those oa higher severity frontal impact. It may noinflate in certain frontal collisions. Vehicdamage (or lack of it) is not always aindication of proper supplemental front abag system operation.

When the supplemental front air bag i

flates, a fairly loud noise may be hearfollowed by the release of smoke. Thsmoke is not harmful and does not indicat

a fire, but care should be taken to notintentionally inhale it, as it may cause irrita-tion and choking. Those with a history of abreathing condition should get fresh airpromptly.

The supplemental front air bags, along withthe use of seat belts, help to cushion theimpact force on the face and chest of theoccupant. They can help save lives andreduce serious injuries. However, an inflat-ing front air bag may cause facial abrasionsor other injuries. Front air bags do notprovide restraint to the lower body.

Seat belts should be correctly worn and thedriver and passenger seated upright as far

as practical away from the steering wheel orinstrument panel. Since the supplementalfront air bags inflate quickly in order to helpprotect the front occupants, the force of thefront air bag inflating can increase the risk ofinjury if the occupant is too close to or isagainst the front air bag module during infla-tion.

The front air bags deflate quickly after acollision.

The supplemental front air bags operateonly when the ignition switch is in the

    ON or START position.

After turning the ignition key to the ONposition, the supplemental air bag warn-ing light illuminates. The supplementalair bag warning light will turn off after

about 7 seconds if the system is opera-tional.

    WARNING

Do not place any objects on the steer-ing wheel pad or on the instrumentpanel. Also, do not place any objectsbetween any occupant and the steer-ing wheel or instrument panel. Suchobjects may become dangerous pro-jectiles and cause injury if the supple-

    mental front air bag inflates.

Right after inflation, several front airbag system components will be hot.Do not touch them; you may se-verely burn yourself.

No unauthorized changes should bemade to any components or wiring ofthe supplemental front air bag sys-tem. This is to prevent accidental in-flation of the front air bags or damage

to the front air bag system.

Do not make unauthorized changes toyour vehicles electrical system, suspension system or front end structure. This could affect proper operation of the supplemental front air bag

system. Tampering with the supplemental fron

air bag system may result in serioupersonal injury. Tampering includechanges to the steering wheel and thinstrument panel assembly by placinmaterial over the steering wheel paand above the dashboard, or by instaling additional trim material around thfront air bag system.

Work around and on the supplemental front air bag system should bedone by an authorized NISSANdealer. Installation of electricaequipment should also be done byan authorized NISSAN dealer. Thyellow SRS wiring should not bemodified or disconnected. Unauthorized electrical test equipment andprobing devices should not be usedon the supplemental front air bag

    Supplemental side air bag system

(if so equipped)The supplemental side air bags are locatedin the outside of the seatback of the frontseats. The supplemental side air bag (onthe driver or front passenger seat) is de-signed to inflate in higher severity sidecollisions, although it may inflate if theforces in another type of collision are similarto those of a higher severity side impact. It isdesigned to inflate on the side where the

vehicle is impacted. It may not inflate incertain side collisions. Vehicle damage (orlack of it) is not always an indication of

proper supplemental side air bag operation

When the supplemental side air bag iflates, a fairly loud noise may be hearfollowed by release of smoke. This smoke not harmful and does not indicate a fire, bu

    cause personal injury.

The front seat pre-tensioner seat belt sys-tem activates in conjunction with the supple-mental front air bag. Working with the seatbelt retractor, it helps tighten the seat beltthe instant the vehicle becomes involved incertain types of collisions, thereby restrain-ing seat occupants.

The pre-tensioner is encased with the seatbelts retractor. These seat belts are usedthe same as conventional seat belts.

When the pre-tensioner seat belt activates, smoke is released and a loud noise may beheard. This smoke is not harmful and doesnot indicate a fire, but care should be takento not intentionally inhale it, as it may cause

    PRECAUTIONS ON SEAT BELTUSAGE

If you are wearing your seat belt properlyadjusted, your chances of being injured orkilled in an accident and/or the severity ofinjury may be greatly reduced. NISSANstrongly encourages you and all of yourpassengers to buckle up every time youdrive, even if your seating position includesa supplemental air bag.

Most states and all Canadian provincesor territories require that seat belts beworn at all times when a vehicle is beingdriven.

    WARNING

Every person who drives or rides inthis vehicle should use a seat belt aall times. Children should be properly restrained and, if appropriate, ina child restraint.

The belt should be properly adjustedto a snug fit. Failure to do so mayreduce the effectiveness of the entire restraint system and increasethe chance or severity of injury in anaccident. Serious injury or death can

occur if the seat belt is not wornproperly.

Always route the shoulder belt overyour shoulder and across yourchest. Never run the belt behind yourback, under your arm or across yourneck. The belt should be away fromyour face and neck, but not fallingoff your shoulder.

Position the lap belt as low and snugas possible AROUND THE HIPS,NOT THE WAIST. A lap belt worn toohigh could increase the risk of inter-nal injuries in an accident.

Be sure the seat belt tongue is se-

curely fastened to the proper buckle.

Do not wear the belt inside out ortwisted. Doing so may reduce its

effectiveness. Do not allow more than one person

to use the same belt. Never carry more people in the ve-

    CHILD SAFETY

Children need adults to help protect them. They need to be properly restrained.

The proper restraint depends on the childssize. Generally, infants up to about one year

and less than 20 pounds (9 kg) should beplaced in rear facing child restraints. Frontfacing child restraints are available for chil-dren who outgrow rear facing child restraints.

    WARNING

Infants and children need special pro-tection. The vehicles seat belts maynot fit them properly. The shoulder beltmay come too close to the face or neck.

The lap belt may not fit over their smallhip bones. In an accident, an improp-erly fitting seat belt could cause seri-ous or fatal injury. Always use appro-priate child restraints.

All U.S. states and Canadian provinces orterritories require the use of approved childrestraints for infants and small children. SeeChild restraints later in this section.

In addition, there are many types of childrestraints available for larger children whichshould be used for maximum protection.

NISSAN recommends that all pre-teens andchildren be restrained in the rear seat ifpossible. According to accident statistics, children are safer when properly restrainedin the rear seat than in the front seat. Thisis especially important because your ve-

hicle has a supplemental restraint system(Air bag system) for the front passenger.See Supplemental restraint system ear-lier in this section.

Infants and small childrenNISSAN recommends that infants and smallchildren be placed in child restraints thatcomply with Federal Motor Vehicle SafetyStandard 213 or Canadian Motor VehicleSafety Standard 213. You should choose a

child restraint that fits your vehicle andalways follow the manufacturers instruc-tions for installation and use.

Larger childrenChildren who are too large for child re-straints should be seated and restrained bythe seat belts which are provided.

If the childs seating position has a shoulderbelt that fits close to the face or neck, theuse of a booster seat (commercially avail-able) may help overcome this. The boosterseat should raise the child so that the shoul-

der belt is properly positioned across thtop, middle portion of the shoulder and thlap belt is low on the hips. The booster seashould fit the vehicle seat and have a labecertifying that it complies with Federal MotoVehicle Safety Standard 213 or CanadiaMotor Vehicle Safety Standard 213. Oncthe child has grown so the shoulder belt no longer on or near the face and neck, usthe shoulder belt without the booster seat

    WARNING

Never let a child stand or kneel on anyseat and do not allow a child in thecargo areas while the vehicle is movingThe child could be seriously injured o

killed in an accident or sudden stop.

PREGNANT WOMENNISSAN recommends that pregnant womeuse seat belts. The seat belt should be worsnug, and always position the lap belt alow as possible around the hips, not thwaist. Place the shoulder belt over yoshoulder and across your chest. Never ruthe lap/shoulder belt over your abdominarea. Contact your doctor for specific recommendations.

The retractor is designed to lock duringa sudden stop or on impact. A slowpulling motion permits the belt to move, and allows you some freedom of move-ment in the seat.

    3. Position the lap belt portion low andsnug on the hips as shown.

    4. Pull the shoulder belt portion toward theretractor to take up extra slack.

The front passenger seat belt and the rearthree-point seat belts have a cinchingmechanism for child restraint installation. It isreferred to as the automatic locking mode.

When automatic locking mode is activated, the seat belt cannot be withdrawn againuntil the seat belt tongue is detached from

Shoulder belt height adjustment(For front seats)

The shoulder belt anchor height should beadjusted to the position best for you. (SeePrecautions on seat belt usage earlier inthis section.) To adjust, pull out the adjust-ment button and move the shoulder beltanchor to the desired position, so the beltpasses over the center of the shoulder. Thebelt should be away from your face andneck, but not falling off your shoulder. Re-lease the adjustment button to lock the

    shoulder belt anchor into position.

    WARNING

After adjustment, release the adjust-ment button and try to move theshoulder belt anchor up and down tomake sure it is securely fixed in

position. The shoulder belt anchor height

should be adjusted to the positionbest for you. Failure to do so mayreduce the effectiveness of the en-tire restraint system and increasethe chance or severity of injury in anaccident.

    SEAT BELT EXTENDERS

If, because of body size or driving position,it is not possible to properly fit the lap-shoulder belt and fasten it, an extender isavailable which is compatible with the in-stalled seat belts. The extender adds ap-proximately 8 inches (200 mm) of lengthand may be used for either the driver or frontpassenger seating position. See an autho-rized NISSAN dealer for assistance if theextender is required.

    WARNING

Only NISSAN seat belt extendersmade by the same company whichmade the original equipment seabelts, should be used with NISSAN

seat belts. Persons who can use the standard

seat belt should not use an extenderSuch unnecessary use could resulin serious personal injury in theevent of an accident.

    PRECAUTIONS ON CHILDRESTRAINTS

    WARNING

Infants and small children shouldalways be placed in an appropriate

child restraint while riding in the ve-hicle. Failure to use a child restraintcan result in serious injury or death.

Infants and small children shouldnever be carried on your lap. It is notpossible for even the strongest adultto resist the forces of a severe acci-dent. The child could be crushedbetween the adult and parts of thevehicle. Also, do not put the sameseat belt around both your child andyourself.

Never install a rear-facing child re-straint in the front seat. An inflatingsupplemental front air bag could se-riously injure or kill your child. Arear-facing child restraint must onlybe used in the rear seat.

NISSAN recommends that the childrestraint be installed in the rear seat.According to accident statistics,

children are safer when properly restrained in the rear seat than in thefront seat.

An improperly installed child restraint could lead to serious injury o

death in an accident. In general, child restraints are de

signed to be installed with a lap belor the lap portion of a three-pointype seat belt.

Child restraints for infants and children various sizes are offered by several manufacturers. When selecting any child restrainkeep the following points in mind:

    1) Choose only a restraint with a label cetifying that it complies with Federal MotoVehicle Safety Standard 213 or Canadian Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 213

    2) Check the child restraint in your vehicto be sure it is compatible with the vehcles seat and seat belt system. Choosa child restraint that meets the guidelineof the Society of Automotive Engineerrecommended practice J1819 for chirestraint installation.

All U.S. states and Canadian provincesor territories require that infants andsmall children be restrained in approvedchild restraints at all times while thevehicle is being operated.

    WARNING

Improper use of a child restraint canresult in increased injuries for boththe infant or child and other occu-pants in the vehicle.

Follow all of the child restraint manu-

facturers instructions for installa-tion and use. When purchasing achild restraint, be sure to select onewhich will fit your child and vehicle. It may not be possible to properlyinstall some types of child restraintsin your vehicle.

If the child restraint is not anchoredproperly, the risk of a child beinginjured in a collision or a sudden

    stop greatly increases.

Adjustable seatbacks should be po-sitioned to fit the child restraint, butas upright as possible.

After attaching the child restraint, test it before you place the child in it.

Tilt it from side to side. Try to tug itforward and check to see if the beltholds the restraint in place. If therestraint is not secure, tighten thebelt as necessary, or put the restraintin another seat and test it again.

For a front-facing child restraint, ifthe seat position where it is installedhas a three-point type lap/shoulderbelt, check to make sure the shoulderbelt does not go in front of the childs

face or neck. If it does, put the shoul-der belt behind the child restraint. Ifyou must install a front-facing childrestraint in the front seat, see Instal-lation on front passenger seat laterin this section for details.

When your child restraint is not inuse, keep it secured with a seat beltto prevent it from being thrownaround in case of a sudden stop or

    accident.
