CourseOverview&ObjectivesThisprogramwillbemorethanjustacquiringknowledge,itwillbeafullimmersionintotheart,science,andpracticeofYoga.TotrulyunderstandYoga,onemustexperienceit.Whetheryourintentionistoteachyogaorsimplydeepenyourpersonalpractice,this8-weekintensivewillimmerseyouinthepracticeandtheoryofthisancientscience;encouragingyoutodevelopaconnectionwithmind,body,andspiritwhilefacilitatingpersonalgrowthandtransformation.Throughin-depthexplorationandpractice,youwillleavetheprogramwithastrongfoundationinyogainstruction.
TheprogrammeetsYogaAlliancestandardsfor200-hourteachertrainingprograms.ItiscurrentlyinthereviewprocessforbecomingaYAapprovedprogram,andwillbeanapprovedprogrampriortothestartdate.Oncetheprogramiscompletedstudentswillhaveaccomplishedthestandardsnecessarytobecomea200-HourRegisteredYogaTeacherwiththeYogaAlliance.
YogaYogatodayiscommonlyrecognizedbyasanas(physicalpostures).It’sthroughthepracticeoftheseposturesthatwelearntofocusourawarenessinwards(Pratyahara)anddevelopbetterconcentration(Dharana),whichpreparesusformeditation(Dhyana).Inthemeantime,wedevelopmuscularstrength,flexibility,balance,andwestimulatetherelaxationresponsewhichhelpstheendocrineandimmunesystems.Throughasanapractice,webegincreatingadeeperawarenessofthewayourbodymovesandfeels;thisawarenesseventuallytravelsintootheraspectsofourlives.Withtimeandpractice,Yogahelpsusbecomemoreawareofourthoughtsandemotions,moreawareofwhoweareandhowweexpressourselves.Asourfocusandconcentrationimproves,wecanbemorepresentinourlives,findpeaceandclarityinthemind,andletgoofmentaldistractionslikestress,worry,anxiety,frustration,andfear.

YourInstructors:AmandaMontavonandJuleHarlemetinAnchorageascollegestudentsin2007.BothnewtoAlaska,theyfoundaconnectionthroughtheirlovefornatureandwildernessexploration.Theygrewclosethroughremotebackpacking,rafting,packrafting,andskiingroutesthroughoutAlaska.Bothavidyogis,theywouldfrequentlytaketheirpracticeoutdoors;discoveringYoga'smagicbothonandoffthemat.Togethertheyhaveover20yearsofteachingYogaandbothhavestudiedandpracticeAyurveda,yoga’s‘sisterscience.’TheylovesharingwithothershowYoga,Ayurvedaandaconnectiontonaturehelpsonetapinto"theirspiritualheart"or"trueself."Theyarelookingforwardtosharingthesewithyouandbuildingapositivelearningcommunityinthis200-hourHathaYogaTeacherTraining!
AmandaMontavon,M.A.,E-500RYT,CAP:Amandahasover15yearsofexperiencecoachingandteachingpeopleofallages,fitnesslevelsandwalksoflife.She’sworkedinthefitnessindustryasaswimcoach,personaltrainerandgroupfitnessinstructor.ShestartedteachingYoga13yearsagoasacertifiedHathainstructorthroughFiTour.Atfirst,shewaspurelyinterestedinthephysicalbenefitsofYoga.However,uponexperiencingthesubtlerbenefitsofherpracticeshebecameintriguedbyYogaphilosophy,mind-bodymedicineandconceptsofholistichealth.Sincethenshe’scompleteda200-hourYogaTeacherTraining(YTT)inMulti-StyleYoga,a500-hourYTTinTraditionalTantraYogafromtheShriKaliAshraminGoa,Indiaandseveralcontinuingeducationworkshops.SheholdsaBachelorofArts(B.A.)inOutdoorStudies
fromAlaskaPacificUniversity,andupongraduatingsheworkedinmentalhealthasawildernessguide/behavioralhealthtechnician,activitytherapistandasaYogatherapist.HercontinuedpursuitofYogaeventuallyledhertothestudyofAyurveda,andshecompletedthetrainingrequiredtomeetthestandardsoftheNationalAyurvedaMedicalAssociationforAyurvedaPractitioners.Shetaughtherfirst200-hourYTTprogramasacapstoneprojectforherMastersofArts,andherthesiswasondevelopingholisticteachingmethods;holisticallysupportingothersalongtheirownuniquepathofpersonalgrowth.ShehastaughtfourYTTsaccreditedbytheYogaAlliance.SheworksfulltimeastheDirectorofProgramsforOnwardandUpwardanon-profitSchoolforAdventureBasedLearningandSelfDiscoveryinPalmer,Alaska.Thestudy,andmoreimportantly,thepracticeofYogaandAyurvedacontinuetobeanintegralpartofherpersonaldevelopment.

JuleHarle,M.A,500RYT,AHC:JulestartedregularlypracticingYogain2005torestoreandstrengthenherbody;sheenjoyedtheconnectionofmovementwithbreathalongwiththeincreasedenergyitgaveherforAlaskanadventures.Shewasdrawntomanystyles:Hatha,Vinyasa,Iyengar,Bikram,Kundalini,andAshtanga,anddrewinsightfromallofthem.In2010,shetraveledtoIndiawithaspirationsofbecomingaYogateacherandcompleteda200-hourYTTinRishikiish.LivinginanAshramfor2monthsimmersedinaYogiclifestylehelpedherbetterunderstandYogaanatomy,philosophyandsubtlepractices.Indiacalledagainin2013;shereturnedtotheashramlifestyletocompletea300-houradvancedYTTwithhersameteachers.Again,shewasimpressedathowgreatherbodyfelt,howstillhermindwas,andhowmuchpeaceshefoundwithherselffromaregularasana,mantra,pranayamaandmeditationroutine.Juleviewsherselfasalifelonglearner-sheseeseveryoneandeverythingasateacher.ShehasaB.A.inCounselingPsychologyfromAlaskaPacificUniversityandaMastersofArts(M.A.)fromUAAinCounseling.She’salsoanAyurvedicHealthCounselorthroughtheNationalAssociationofAyurvedicMedicine.StudyingYoga’s‘sisterscience’hashelpedherunderstandhowbothfacilitatedeepphysicalandmentalhealingwhilesupportinggrowthinheryogapractice.Julealsohasamentalhealthcounselingpractice,specializinginintegratingyoga,Ayurveda,DBT&CBTtechniqueswithholisticlifestylechanges.SheownsAlaskaYogaAdventuresandguideswildernessyogatripsandretreatsthroughoutthestate.

classesthroughouttheyear.YogahashelpedAilisbecomeabetterpersonbyteachingherself-discipline,patience,understanding,loving-kindness,andtolerance.Aregularyogapracticealsohelpsherwithheroffthematactivities:biking,hiking,gardening,keepingupwithatoddler,andswimming.Yogahasalsotaughthertoloveherselfnomatterwhatobstaclessheencounters.Sheencouragesanyoneandeveryonetotryyoga,andtotryitatMidnightSunbecauseoftheinclusivefeelthestudentsoffertonewstudents,andthevastknowledgeoftheinstructors.Sheteachesyogabecausesheloveshelpingpeoplehelpthemselves.Hergoalistohelpstudentsfeelbetter,morerelaxedandmoreatpeacewhentheyleaveclass.Shebelievesthatifeveryoneintheworldpracticedyoga,theworldwouldbemuchmoreatpeace.
CourseDescription
Techniques,TrainingandPractice(TTP):Thiscategoryincludesasana,pranayama,anatomy,yogaphilosophy,meditationandothertraditionalyogatechniques.Analyticalandguidedpracticeinhowtoteachtheseconceptswillbereceived.
TeachingMethodology(TM):Thiscategoryincludesvariousteachingstyles,communicationskills,groupdynamics,timemanagement,healthyboundaries,demonstrationofyogaasanas,observationofbodies,assistingandadjustingandhowtoaddressthespecificneedsofindividualsandspecialpopulations.Discussionofstudentlearningprocesses,qualitiesofateacher,andthebusinessofteachingyoga.
AnatomyandPhysiology(A&P):Thiscategoryfocusesonhumananatomyandphysiology(bodilysystems,organs,etc.)aswellasenergyanatomyandphysiology(chakras,nadis,etc.).Italsoincludesboththestudyofthesubjectandapplicationofitsprinciplestoyogapractice(benefits,contraindications,healthymovementpatterns,etc.).
YogaPhilosophy,LifestyleandEthicsforYogaTeacher(PLE):ThisentailsthestudyofyogaphilosophiesandtraditionaltextssuchasTheYogaSutrasofPatanjali.HathaYogaPradipika,andTheBhagavadGita.Wewilldiscussapplyingthe8limbsofyogatoeverydaylife,ethicsforyogateachers-suchasthoseinvolvingteacher/studentrelationshipsandcommunity,andunderstandingthevalueofteachingyogaasaserviceandbeingofservicetoothersthroughyoga.
PracticumHours(P):Thisentailspracticeteaching,receivingandgivingfeedback,observingothersteach,assiststudentswhilesomeoneelseisteaching.
