When Lewis Haskew put on his graduation cap and gown, he’d already worked in his dream job for months. Now a much-loved voice on Canberra’s airwaves, Lewis secured his role as a news reader for the ACT’s most prolific radio network, Canberra FM, while completing his Bachelor of Communications in Journalism at UC.

Lewis credits his success as a young journalist to the opportunities he received as a student. ‘At uni, I learnt a lot about myself — who I am and what I want to do,’ he reflects. ‘My tutors and lecturers were either working journalists, or former journos with a tonne of experience in the field. They brought their own stories to the classroom and used their connections to help me get a foot in the door.’

‘One of my lecturers was a former ABC journalist, with strong connections to ABC Canberra. She helped me get my first internship at the ABC studios, and my career’s progressed from there.’

In his final year, Lewis won the Peter Leonard Scholarship for Broadcast Journalism. After spending three weeks working at WIN Television, Lewis’ segments aired in prime spots in the evening news. ‘It was incredibly exciting. To go from studying journalism to having the chance to put my studies into practice on-camera was amazing.’

Canberra has proved the perfect place for Lewis to start his career. ‘I love Canberra — it’s a world-class city without all the people.’

Energetic, driven and agile, Emily Coates’ success stems from taking chances, believing in her talent and actively embracing new challenges.

While studying for her Bachelor of Advertising and Marketing Communication, Emily took advantage of every exciting experience UC threw her way, including spending a semester studying fashion marketing in Milan at the Istituto Europeo di Design.

‘Studying abroad was a real highlight of my time at uni. I learnt from some of the industry's top fashion marketers, stepped behind the scenes of luxury fashion brands and explored Europe on weekends. It doesn’t get much better!’

After returning to Canberra with the world in her sights, Emily’s diverse career has seen her do everything from managing

digital campaigns for Cartier to working on award-winning brand campaigns for the Australian Air Force, and starting her own social media consultancy agency to buying HOORAY!, an online magazine for lovers of parties and good times.

Exhausted? Ain’t nobody got time for that!

Emily has lived her life by two simple rules: have your own back, and just say yes.

‘Take opportunities as they come to you — big and small. You get invited to an event? Go. Someone asks you to get involved in a project? Do it. You never know where these small actions will lead.'

LIVE MUSICIf you live for live music, the UC Refectory is going to be your new home. Located right on campus, this venue pulls seriously heavy punches, making sure UC students get to party to some of the biggest names in the country – think everyone from Allday to Peking Duk to Troye Sivan.

NICK SMITHUC Alumni, Bar Rochford owner

If great bartenders make even better therapists, it should come as little surprise that Nick Smith, owner of Bar Rochford and kingpin of Canberra’s burgeoning bar scene, holds a Bachelor of Psychology from UC.

‘I studied psychology to learn more about myself,’ Nick explains. ‘I always felt I was good with people and wanted to be a counsellor at the time.’

As Nick moved through his degree, he grew in confidence, building writing skills, learning how to network and making new friends. ‘UC helped me grow as a person,’ he reflects. ‘It gave me the guts to go out and get a job and made me feel secure in my ability to write well and connect with people.’

While psychology and hospitality are vastly different fields, Nick applies the skills he learnt during his degree to his current work at Bar Rochford. ‘Running a bar is all about knowing how people tick. I work with people full-time and my degree informs the skills I need when dealing with the challenges of owning a business — giving people a chance, managing my staff’s daily issues, and talking to customers.’

Thanks in part to Nick’s skilled management of talented staff, Bar Rochford has experienced astronomical success in its short life – the establishment won Gourmet Traveller’s ‘Bar of the Year’ and received its first hat in 2018.

‘Mum was very excited,’ Nick laughs. ‘It’s amazing to be part of a venue where you feel proud to come in to work.’

When asked to give advice to future students, Nick doesn’t hesitate. ‘Work hard, keep humble, and put 110 per cent into your craft. Otherwise, what’s the point?’

HOLD ME CLOSER, TINY DANCERUnlike other major cities we won’t name (*cough* Sydney), our parties don’t shut down just as things are getting started. Dance until dawn to national and international DJs at Mr Wolf or head to the famous Mooseheads for classic pub rock.

BARS AND PUBSNo matter your tastes, you’ll be impressed with Canberra’s booming bar scene. Famous for its grungy fine times, Bar Rochford (run by UC alumni Nick Smith) took out top place in Gourmet Traveller’s 2018 ‘Bar of the Year’ awards. Experience magical mixology at Highball Express and Molly’s, Canberra’s favourite speakeasy. If you’re into craft beer, head to Bentspoke or Capital Brewing Co. to enjoy a pint in a working brewery.20

As the game changers and rule breakers shaping Canberra’s aesthetic, UC grads Tim Lynch and Colin Haining don’t believe in doing things by the book. Since opening Inklab Creative Agency in 2009, the two young guns have been driven by the desire to create great work, exactly the way they want.

Tim and Colin met while studying a Bachelor of Graphic Design at UC, and their uni friendship easily transitioned into a fulfilling work partnership. ‘We share a love of design and making things better. After graduating UC and opening Inklab, our business has grown every year in both size and the quality of our work.’

By shaping a work culture that fuses passion, talent and thoughtfulness, Tim and Colin help their team bring their clients’ vision to life with equal measures of electric creativity and careful consideration. ‘We have high standards and we’re constantly pushing ourselves to produce better projects.

The best part of our job is putting work into the world that we’re proud of, and that helps our clients achieve their goals.’

When it comes to advice for incoming UC students, Tim and Colin shoot straight from the hip. ‘Don’t look for shortcuts — there aren’t any. Be generous with your time and always seek to make things better.’

‘Get as much real-life experience as you can. If your friend asks you to design their band’s poster, make it the best poster they’ve ever seen. Find a mentor and annoy them with as many questions as they can tolerate.’

For Virginia Haussegger AM, 2019’s ACT Australian of the Year and award-winning journalist and advocate, UC is headquarters for a vital campaign to change the world for the next generation of leaders.

Virginia launched the 50/50 by 2030 Foundation at UC’s Institute for Governance and Policy Analysis, with the aim of seeing women equally represented in leadership and key decision-making roles at all levels of government and public administration throughout Australia and across the region.

STUDY SKILLSThe UC Study Skills team helps you find solutions to study related problems you may be having, providing assistance with writing and grammar, researching and referencing, the structuring of assignments, avoiding plagiarism, online learning systems, maths and stats, and more. Study Skills offers orientation programs, both face-to-face and online. These include the Smart Study Transition and Orientation Program which can be done at any time through the Study Help UCLearn site. This program has multiple pathways for you to choose from to help you develop your writing, referencing and maths skills. Study Skills also runs face to-face sessions to help you learn how to plan your studies, how to study effectively, and how to use the UC online systems.

For 24/7 study help, the Study Help UCLearn site contains online interactive learning resources to help with finding information, referencing, assignment writing, maths and stats, time management, exam preparation, and more.

PEER-ASSISTED LEARNING SESSIONSPeer-Assisted Learning Sessions (PALS) offer extra learning and study support for traditionally difficult units. PALS leaders are past students who have succeeded in these difficult units and have received additional training to assist them in passing on their knowledge.

INTENSIVE ENGLISHThe Study Skills Intensive English Course runs four times a year: just before the start of both Semester 1 and Semester 2, and in Week 8 of both semesters. This course is free for UC students, and is designed to help you improve your English writing, reading, speaking and listening skills.

MATHS AND STATS HELPDrop-in Maths and Stats Help (MASH) sessions are held Monday to Friday in the MASH Centre. These are open to all students, with friendly tutors available to assist with a range of mathematics and statistics queries. There are also a range of online maths and stats learning modules available on the Study Help UCLearn site.

LIBRARYThe UC Library offers extensive information resources and reference works, including online materials, to support your study and research. You can use library facilities for individual and group study and the Library Commons is available 24-hours a day. Our library staff provide individual and group assistance, both in the library and online.

CHILDCAREIf you’ve got little ones in tow, childcare is easy at UC. We have two childcare facilities on campus: the Kirinari Early Childhood Centre and the Wiradjuri Preschool and Child Care Centre. Both complexes offer childcare support for the community, students and staff of the University.

CAMPUS SERVICES On campus, you’ll find everything you need, including a bank, post office, hair salon, convenience store, supermarket and cafés and restaurants offering delicious food. NEED HELP BUYING TEXTBOOKS?A textbook bursary provides students with a $100 Co-op bookshop voucher to assist those students experiencing financial difficulties in purchasing their textbooks. The bursary is awarded on a first-come, first-served basis and there are a limited number on offer each year.

As you work towards your future, there are certain fees you may need to pay throughout your studies. Fees change depending on your enrolment status and may include Student Services and Amenities Fees and tuition fees.

DOMESTIC STUDENTSUniversity fees for domestic students fall under one of two categories: Fee-Paying Places or Commonwealth Supported Places (CSP). How much you end up paying for your course depends on the type of fees associated with your degree.

All domestic undergraduate students are eligible for a CSP, and some domestic postgraduate students may also be eligible for a CSP depending on their course.

1. FEE-PAYING PLACESIf your course offers Fee-Paying Places, the price listed is the annual fee for students enrolled in full-time study. Although Fee Paying Places are not subsidised by the Australian Government, you can still access a FEE HELP loan to assist with paying your fees. Please see Financial Support for further information.

2. COMMONWEALTH-SUPPORTED PLACES (CSP)If you’re enrolled in a CSP, Australian Government funding covers most of your university fees and you only need to pay the amount that’s left over. This is called the Student Contribution Amount. You can choose to pay your Student Contribution Amount upfront, or you can access a HECS-HELP loan to assist with your fees. Please see Financial Support for further information.

Each year, the Australian Government releases the Student Contribution Range which identifies how much a university can charge students. At most universities in Australia, including the University of Canberra, students are charged the maximum amount.

3. CALCULATING CSP FEESThe various subjects you undertake as part of your degree fall under three separate bands known as Student Contribution Bands.

You can calculate an approximate cost for your degree by selecting the Student Contribution Band relevant to your course and multiplying the full Student Contribution Amount by the number of years your degree takes to complete.

Student Contribution Amounts change each year, so the fees in the year you commence your studies may be different to those in subsequent years. You might also choose to undertake some units during your degree, as part of a major, for example, that fall under another band, and this will impact the overall cost of your degree.

FINANCIAL SUPPORTAll university fees can be paid upfront, or you can choose to use the Higher Education Loan Program (HELP) to defer paying your fees until a later date. The Australian Government Higher Education Loan Program consists of three loan schemes known as HECS-HELP, FEE-HELP, and SA-HELP.

HECS-HELP Higher Education Contribution Scheme (HECS) is the type of loan you take out as a university student to pay your Student Contribution Amount. All students enrolled in a Commonwealth-Supported Place (CSP) are eligible for a HECS-HELP loan.

FEE-HELP FEE-HELP is a similar loan scheme to HECS-HELP but for students enrolled in a Fee-Paying Place. FEE-HELP differs from HECS-HELP in that it has a maximum limit that can be borrowed (known as the FEE-HELP limit) and is usually for university students studying postgraduate courses. For 2019, the FEE HELP limit is $104,440 for most students.

SA-HELPSA-HELP is a loan scheme available to Australian Citizens that have been charged the Student Services and Amenities Fee (SSAF).

APPLYING FOR A HELP LOANWhen you enrol at university, you’ll be asked to complete an online form and select your preferred billing option. You can choose to pay your fees upfront, make a partial payment and defer the remaining fee, or defer the whole payment via your HELP loan.

TERM DESCRIPTION

Accreditation A certification of competence in a specified subject or area of expertise awarded by a third party.

Articulation A formal agreement between two educational institutions to award credit towards a course based on previous completion of an award program.

Australian Tertiary Admissions Rank (ATAR)

A rank calculated so that universities and other tertiary education providers can compare students who have completed different types of Year 12 study. The ATAR is used as a basis for admission into university. Other criteria may also be used in conjunction with an ATAR.

Course A program of study, usually taking three or four years to complete. When a student completes their course, they’re awarded a degree.

Credit The recognition of prior learning and skills, which can excuse a student from undertaking certain units within a degree.

Deferring A term used when a student receives an offer from a university but chooses to delay their start date by six months to one year.

Degree A qualification a student earns after completing their course of study.

Discipline A group of degrees at an institution that share common themes, units and resources.

Double Degree Students can study two undergraduate degrees at the same time and complete both degrees in a condensed time frame.

Faculty A collective group of associated disciplines, run by a Dean who oversees teaching and research.

Hecs (or HECS-HELP) HECS-HELP is a financial loan available to eligible students enrolled in a Commonwealth-Supported Place at a higher education institution. Find out more at studyassist.gov.au

Honours A one-year course for high-achieving students, typically undertaken at the end of a standard three year bachelor's degree.

Lecture A class which presents the critical information from a unit to students.

Major A sequence of related units that form a student’s main field of specialisation within a degree. Students are required to undertake a certain number of units within this specific field to qualify with a major.

Mature Age Students Students who are entering tertiary study and are aged 21 or over.

Minor A sequence of related units that form a student’s secondary field of specialisation within a degree. Minors also require a certain number of units to be studied.

Non-School Leaver Students who are entering tertiary study without having graduated from Year 12 the previous year.

Packaged Offer When a student doesn’t meet the admission requirements of a degree, they may be required to complete another program of study prior to commencing study, such as a bridging course or English language program.

Pathway Alternative entry methods into university that aren’t based on a raw ATAR score, including schools’ recommendation schemes, adjustment factors and bridging courses.

Postgraduate Study undertaken after a student has already completed at least one undergraduate bachelor's degree or equivalent.

Prerequisite Prescribed conditions students must satisfy to gain entry into a course.

Scholarship Financial grants given to eligible students to help cover costs associated with university, based on merit, need, career or equity grounds.

School Leaver Students who plan on studying either straight after completing Year 12 or in the following year.

Selection Rank An adjusted score for entry into university consisting of a student’s ATAR plus any adjustment factors that they are eligible for and have been awarded. Selection ranks advertised in this guide reflect the course cut-offs provided to the Universities Admissions Centre (UAC) for assessing applications to UC for the 2019 admissions round.

Tutorial A class intended to assist students in the understanding and practical application of information provided in the lecture.

Undergraduate A student who has not yet completed any tertiary study. Most bachelor's degrees are referred to as undergraduate degrees.

Unit A subject of study at university. A degree is made up of units that a student must pass.

Universities Admission Centre (UAC)

UAC processes applications for admission to most undergraduate and some postgraduate courses at participating institutions (mainly located in NSW and the ACT). uac.edu.au

Work Integrated Learning The combination of workplace experience with academic learning, assessment and support.
