WEYBRIDGE with OATLANDS PARK. WEYBRIDGE is a town and parish, with a station on the London and South Western railway, 19 miles from London, 8! west-south-west from Kingston and 3 south-east from Chertsey, in the North Western division of the county, first division of Elmbridge hundred, Chertsey petty sessional division, union and county I'Ourt district, rural deanery of Emly, archdeaconry of Surrey and diocese of Winchester. The Ba& ngstoke canal and river Wey here form their junction with tht> Thame.s below Shepperton lock. Under the provisions acres in extent, and are managed by 12 trus'ees (uader a scheme of the Charity Commissioners), who meet twice a year; the holders pay 4d.. a rod yearly, and the rents are distributed in coals a.nnua.lly among the poor of the village ; Mr. William Orchard is clerk to the trustees. In this parish and partly in Byfleet is the racing track of the Brooklands Automobile Racing Club, which has been laid out on the estate of H. F. Locke King esq. at an estimated cost of £150,000. The cement track is a pt>ar-shaped course 2! miles round and 103 feet wide and will admit of ten cal'8 abreast. The track was opened July 6th, 1907. Oatlands Lodge, the seat of the Hon. Sir Charles Swinfen Ea.dy, Justice of the High Court, is a f the "Lo al Government Act, 1894" (56 and 57 Vict. c. 73, Weybridge is governed by an Urban District Council of 12 members, formed in 1894. The village is supplied with gas by the Walton-on-Thames and Weybridge Gas Co. from works at Walton, and with water by the West Surrey Water Co. The church of St. James, t>rected in 1847-8, is of stone in the Pointed Gothic style, and has a tower with spire 175 feet in height and containing a clock and 8 bells : the east window and most of the other windows are stained, and there are many ancient and curious brasses, removed from the old church, a.nd some m dern monuments, one by Sir F. Chantrey to H.R.H. the Duchess of York, d. 6 Aug. 1820, whose remains are deposited in a vault in the churchyard : the chancel was rebuilt in 1890 : the church affords 1,000 sittings. The register dates from the year 1625. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £320, with 50 acres of glebe and residen e, in the gift of the Lord Chancellor, and held since 1903 by the Rev. Spencer Richard Arthur Bull<>r M.A. of Queen's College, Oxford. St. l\Iichael and All Angels, erected in 1874 as a chapel of ease, is a structure of brick in the Gothic style, consisting of chancel, nave and aisles, and has for 550 persons, half being free. In the Port. mere Park di"trict is a large 1\Iission room, holding 350 persons. The Cathohc church, dedicated to St. Charles Borromeo, was built by Mrs. Taylor, and adjoins Waverley House; beneath the chapel, in a tomb, were temporarily deposited the rema·ns of Louis Philippe, .King of the French, who died 26 Aug. 1850, and Amelie, his Queen, who died 24 March, 1866, and also the Dur>hess of Orleans, the Duchess de Ne m ours and the Due de Conde ; the bodies of the Orleans familv, . - mansion in the Italian style ; in the grounds are two groups of yew trees, planted by Queen Elizabeth, and the space between the groups is popularly known as " Queen Elizabeth's bow shot." Brooklands is the seat of Hugh Fortescue Locke King esq. J.P. ; Noirmont of Patrick Riddell; and Field Place, of Mrs. Y ool ; other principal residences are Bartropps, Oakfield and Weybridga Park. Henry Edwards Paine esq. of Chertsey, is lord of the manor. The principal landowners are Hugh Fortescue Locke King esq. Sir C. Swinfen Eady, John Alan Clutton-Brock esq. and 1\frs. Henry Yool The soil is sand ; subsoil, gravel. The area is 1,330 acres of land and 41 of water; rateable value, £69,447; the population in 1901 was 5,329 and in 1911, 6,286. OATLANDS PARK is an ecclesiastical parish, formed 15 ,January, 1869, very pleasantly situated between Walton· on-Thames and \Yeybridge, 1 mile north-west from Walton· on-Thames Railway station. The church of St. Mary, erected in 1861, at a cost of between £4,000 and £5,000 and since enlarged at a cost of £3,000, is a building of stone in the Early English style, consisting of chancel, nave, aisles, south porch, and a tower containing 8 bells inserted in 1913: the tower was erected in 1905, from designs by Jl.'lr. Compton Hall, architect, as a memorial to Mr. G. T. Woodrooffe, a former resident in this parish, at a cost of £2,500, left for this purpose by his stepson, Mr. H. G. Burgess ; there are 14 memorial windows, a finely carved pulpit of stone and marble, and a marble reredos, presented as a memorial to the late Rev. George Bowes Watson M.A. vicar here 18715-87, d. 1891. The register dates from the year 1861. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £420, derived chiefly from pew rents, in the gift of the Bishop of \Vhchester, and held since 1887 by the Rev. John Hands Townsend M.A. of Trinit:f College, Oxford, chaplain to the Jietropolitan Convalescent Institution and rural dean of Emly. The parish room was built in 1887. The Working l\fen's Club was erected in 1884 ou a site presented by F. B. T. M. Coutts esq. J.P. Oatlands (formerly the seat of Frederick Duke of York & Albany K.G. (d. 1827), and afterwards of Lord Francis Egerton) is an ex- ceedingly beautiful domain, commanding delightful views over the river and valley of the Thames, with Windsor Castle tower- ing in the distance : the mansion is now the Oa.tlands Park Hotel, and stands upon elPvatoo terrace land, with a dry gravelly subsoil: the hotel includes a dining saloon, 88 feet by 40 feet, and there are livery stables and motor garage at- tached: in the grounds is a grotto, a magnificent structure of shell work, con'!tructed about 1747 by Henry Pelham-Clinton K.G. 9th Earl of Lincoln, at a cost of about £40,000: a father and his two sons are said to have been employed upon it for upward'! of twenty yPars: it consists of three chambers of elaborate Pxecution leading by passages into each other; the walls and vaulting are inlaid in variou" devices with coloured spars, minerals and she-lls ; at the entrance in a niche is a marble statue by tht> Florentine sculptor, Pietro T rre- giano : at the foot of the terrace i'l Broad\\ ater Lake, and on a gra'lsy mound overhanging it stands a model of the Temple of Vesta at Tivoli, now forming the vestibule of a. gentleman's residence. Foxhole'! i" the residence of Miss l\Iartineau. The land i'l much sub-divided for villas with extensive grounds, which are occupied by the owners. The population in 1911 was 1,897. including 177 in the Metro· politan Convalescent Institution. With the exception of that of the Duchess de Nemours, were removed to the family burying place at Dreux in France, in 1876 ; the Comte de Paris, who died at Stowe House, Bucks, 8 Sept. was here buried 12 Sept. 1894; there is a residence for the prieat attached to the church. The Congre- gational chapel, erected in 1864, is a cruciform building of stone in the Decorated style, with a tower and spire rising to a he ght of 90 feet, and has sittings for 480 persons ; there is also a Wesleyan chapeL The Meeting House of the Plymouth Brethr n, erected in 1873, has sittings for 80 persons, and there Evangelistic and Gospel :Mission rooms. The cemetery is 3 acres in extent, and has two mortuary chapels under one roof and a residence lodge for the curator ; it is under the control of the Urban District Council. Holstein Hall and As3embly Rooms were opened Jan. 19, 1905, as a public hall for dramatic performances, concerts, meetings &c. ; the hall will hold 800 per3ons. The Technical Institute, in Church street, was erected in 1912, at a cost of £4,440, and is under the control of the Urban District Council. The Village Hall, in Princes road, built in 1883, is used for concerts &c. A Watermen's Regatta is held here yearly in September. Here are some remains of a palace built by Henry VIII. several of the gateways and undl'rground pas'<ages remaimng entire : the ground-;, formerly part of the park, are now occupied as a private nursery ground and fruit garden. 9n the green is a column, about 30 feet high, erected by the IDhabitants of Weybridge and the vicinity, 6 August, 1822, to the memory of H.R.H. the Duchess of York. In 1907 a recreation ground, 7 acres in extent, was given by John Lyle esq. for the use of the inhabitants. There is a rifle club here, consisting of about 190 members. The \Veybridge Cotta.cre Hospital is under the management of local doctors. The charities amount to about £100 yearly, of which a sum of £38 yearly was bequeathed for the repairs of the church, and the remainder distributed in bread, coals and clothing among the poor. 'Vll\IBLEDON WIMBLEDON is a town, paiish and municipal borough 3 miles south-west from \Vandsworth and 6 north-east from Kingston, in the North Eastern division of the county, Brixton west hundred, Kingston union and county court district and S uth W stern postal district, and within the Metropohtan p lice district, in the rural deanery of Barnes, archdeaconry of h.m0 ston and diocese of Southwark. The London and South \\ es ern main line of railway intersects the parish, and h:ts a st tion here, 7! miles from \Vaterloo terminus, and from VI hi h br n hes extend to Leather head via. Raynes Park, to Tulse Hill via Tooting, to Kingston via Maiden and another through Putney, across the Th'tmes to the Putney Bridge s ti n of the Metropolitan District railway; the London, Brighton and South Coast railway has a brunch from bene~ to Mltch m Junction, where it meets the lines to Croydon, the Cry,tal Palace and London Bridge, as well as to Epsom and Le therhead. The river Wandle skirts the parish. The "I.ocal Government Act, 1858 " (21 and 22 Vict. c. 98), was adopted here May 11, 1866, and the parish was subsequently controll d by an Urban District Council created by the " Local Government Act, 1894," but a charter of incorporation was granted 24th July, 1905, under which the borough is divided mto six wards, and is now governed by a Corporation con­Slating of a mayor, six aldermen, and 18 councillors. The town is lighted by electricity, and by the Electric Lighting Orders Confirmation (No. 7) Act, 1903, power is given to the Council to supply electricity within the adjoining parishes of Mt>rton, Old Malden, New .Maiden and Coombe: it is sup· plied with water by the Metropolitan Water road (Southern district). The sewage farm is 66 acrt's in extent.

The parish church of St. l\'hry ~as built, with the exception of the chancel, in 1788, and rebuilt in 1843 in the Perpendicular style, and in 1860 the chancel was rebuilt: the tower has a I fty spire, and contains 6 bells and a clock : a small mortuary hapel on the south side of the chancel, erected by Sir Edward

Cecil, Viscount Wtmbledon, in the early part of the 17th cen­tury, contains an altar tomb of black marble to the Viscount, ob. 16 Nov. 1638, and to other members of the Cecil family: there are 1,000 sittings, 300 being free : in the churchyard ts the tomb of one Hopkins, a usurer, mentioned by Pope as "Vulture Hopkins." The register of baptisms dates from the year 1538 ; marriages and burials from 1594. The living is a vicarage, gross nominal yearly value£1,000, withresiden('e, in the gift of the Dean and Chapter of Worcester, and held since 1903 by the Rev. James Alien Bell M.A. of Corpus Christi College, Cambridge, rural dean of Wimbledon, surrogate and acting chaplain to the Forces.

Christ Church, Copse Hill, erected in 1859 at a cost of about £6,000, as a chapel of ease to St. Mary's, is of Kentish ragstone in the Decorated style, and has a central tower containing 6

bells : the east window and two others are stained : the church was enlarged in 1881, and has 675 sittings, one-third of which a.re free.

St. John the Baptist's, Spencer Hill, a chapel of ease to St. Mary's, built in 1875, is of brick in the Decor ted Gothic style: there are 740 sittings, half of which are free.

St. 1\Iark's Church, Alexandra road, a chapel of ease to St. Mary's, erected in 1880, is of brick in the Early English style, and has a turret containing one bell: there are 630 s1ttings.

St. Matthew's Church, Durham road, Cottenham Park, a chapel of ease to St. Mary's, was opened as an iron building in 1892, and the first part of the permanent church built at a cost of £4,000 in 1909, with sittings for 400 persons.

All S'1ints, South Wimbledon, is an ecclesiastwal parish formed from Holy Trinity, 9 August, 1892: the church, com­menced in 1891 and consecrated in 1893, is of red brick with Doulting stone dressings in a late Gothic style : there are several memorial windows : the church affords 650 sittings. The register dates from the year 1892. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £320, with glebe house, in the gift of the Bi,hop of Southwark, and held since 1911 by the Rev. Ri hard Mervyn Faithful! Davies B.A. of Toronto University and A..K.C.L.

Holy Trinity, South Wimbledon, is an ecclesiastical parish formed FebrtMry 6, 1872. The church, erected in 1862, is of stone in the Early Decorated style, and has a turret con­taining one bell : the east window is stained, and there is one other: there are 750 sittings, half of which are free. The register date~'~ from the year 1872. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £315, chiefly derived from pew rents, w1th residence-, in the gift of the Vicar of Wimbledon, and held since 1910 by the Rev. William James Margetson M.A. of Oxford University.

The church of the Holy Spirit, which is attached to Holy Trinity, is a temporary building in Faradey road, and will seat 300 persons.

St. Andrew's, South Wimbledon, is an ecclesiastical parish formed by Order in Council, dated August, 1910, from Holy Trinitv; the church in Herbert road, erected in 1909, i'l an edi-

St. Luke's, Farquhar road, is an ecclesiastical parish formed April, 1910, from St. ~fary's: the church, erected in 1909 at a. cost of £15,000, is of red brick and Portland stone, in the Gothic style. from designs by T.
