On behalf of the Georgia High School Association and its cor-porate partners, I want to thank you for your support at this year’s State Championship matches, and for your support of high school wrestling throughout this season. The Georgia High School Association could not offer quality tournaments such as this without the hard work of a large number of volunteers who give of them-selves tirelessly. This championship event is hosted by the Atlanta Takedown Associa-tion, whose members have participated in its planning and operation. A special word of thanks goes out to these volunteers led by Bud Hennebaul, Tournament Director, and to GHSA Assistant Executive Director, Gary Phillips, who is the GHSA administra-tor for Wrestling. The staff of the fantastic Arena at Gwinnett Place stands ready to help you if you have any needs. The GHSA is extremely grateful for the support of a number of corporate partners. As you look through this program and as you

look around the Arena, please note the names of these fine partners – and please use their products and services whenever possible. The quality of wrestling in Georgia continues to grow tremendously as play-ers, coaches, and officials perform at new levels of excellence. The Georgia High School Association strongly believes that lifelong lessons about discipline and hard work are learned in the competitive arenas of high school athletics, and this is especially true with Wrestling. Now, get ready for exciting wrestling ac-tion. Support your wrestlers vigorously, and remember to demonstrate good sports-manship always.

jefferson continues to dominate the mat, regardless of classificationSome things in life you can take for granted.

Then there’s the Jefferson High wrestling team. If you’re a wrestling fan from the small town about 12 miles northwest of Athens, it’s a good thing. For wrestling fans everywhere else… not so much. How good coach Doug Thurmond’s Jef-ferson wrestling team is year in, year out is not the question. The question should be: “How great are the Dragon grapplers decade after decade?” Before 2000, Jefferson had won a respectable four state titles. That’s pretty good, but since 2001, Jeffer-son has won every state championship possible. That season, they won the state title in Class A. For the next seven years, they won both the traditional (tournament style) title and the dual (meet format) crown. In 2009, the Dragons moved up to Class 2A and did the same. With a win in this week’s traditional tournament and next week’s dual meet event, Jefferson will be beginning a second decade of dominance. For his efforts, Thurmond has been named Geor-gia’s Coach of the Year four times.

A FAMILY AFFAIR … The freight train doesn’t seem to be headed for a slowdown anytime soon, de-spite returning only four of last year’s seven individual state champions. They are led by the Thurmond’s second son, Casey, a senior. The younger Thurmond is just a handful of matches from finishing with four individual

state titles. Two other seniors, Cain Finch and Zach Allen, already won two state titles each. Of course, high school wrestling is a team sport, and the Jefferson squad is flat-out dominant in almost every weight class. They finished the dual meet season undefeated with 35 wins. Pity the last three teams to wrestle against Jefferson on Jan. 25, when Dun-woody, Lakeside-Dekalb and St. Pius X lost to Jefferson in a quad meet by an average of 67-8. Of the 12 weight classes, 10 boys won each of their three matches.

SPeeD BUMPS … The biggest issue for this year’s team to repeat in both categories appears to be

the tournament schedule. Although Jefferson is solid from 103 lbs. all the way to 285, all wrestlers must qualify for the traditional state meet. Therefore, there is no guarantee that every wrestler will be making the trip to the traditional tournament. (The state dual meet championship was scheduled for the middle of January, but Georgia’s snow and ice prob-lems forced postponement). Now, the state duals have been pushed to next weekend. This presents a challenge for some wrestlers to remain sharp. “We hope to keep all of them with us and keep everybody pretty much focused,” Coach Thurmond told MainStreet Newspapers. “It’s hard to focus for some of them at this point

because, if they’re not going with us (for the traditional tournament), they’re not getting to compete and they just have to practice (then be ready for state duals). But, you hope that they’re focused enough to do that for team purposes.” Obviously, it doesn’t appear that a week of snow will derail Jefferson. The team is a pipeline that starts before many of the boys enter kindergarten. Casey started wrestling in the Jefferson USA Kids program when he was four. Following him and his two-time state champion older brother Cam in their hand-me-down wrestling shoes are two younger Thurmonds, Tanner and Tyson. Un-like in some organizations, there is definite synergy between the youngest wrestlers and the seniors on the high school team, as Coach Thurmond was the architect of the youth pro-gram. There is no doubt he continues to watch closely. When he talks about his four boys he could be saying the same for all the kids in singlets. “They are all wrestlers,” said Thur-mond to the Athens Banner-Herald. “They have been little mat rats since they were little bitty guys. They grew up around it so much.” Wrestling fans in Class 2A can expect Jefferson to continue to dominate. Their best hope may be that the population of Jefferson continues to grow, and 3A teams will soon be trying to get out of the way of the Jeffer-son freight train. Conway can be reached at 404-256-1572.

Championships for duals around corner, format differs from traditional-styleBud Hennebaul and Pete Fritts know their

wrestling. After all, they’ve been been involved with the sport since childhood. Hennebaul was a five-year-old beginner in Wilkes-Barre, Pa. where his father was running the local youth wrestling program at the YMCA in town. Now, it’s a family affair for the man who is now Vice President and Tournament Di-rector of the Atlanta Takedown Association. Despite his father’s death, Bud has kept the Hennebaul wrestling tradition going. Not only does his son Jay wrestle for Mountain View High School, he also serves as the “unofficial” assistant tournament direc-tor, helping his dad when the meets are taking place. Also taking part in the family wrestling business, Bud’s wife Beverly keeps score in the Class 5A meets, while his sister keeps score in Class 4A and his niece keeps score in Class A. Hennbaul’s brother Rick is a tournament official and his mother Marianne is in charge of hospitality at the meets. And if that weren’t enough, Hennebaul’s brother-in-law, Mark Smith, will be singing the national anthem at the traditional state meet this weekend. “He wasn’t tough enough to be a wres-tler,” joked Hennebaul.

DUALS DIFFeR … The dual wrestling meets differ greatly from the traditional style, as Hennebaul ex-plained. “There’s more strategy involved,” he said in a recent interview with Score Atlanta. “Coaches can shuffle lineups and more kids get to wrestle.”

Another life-long wresting fanatic, Pete Fritts, thinks fans enjoy the dual more than the traditional-style. “There’s more enthusiasm and support from the fans,” he said. “That arena (The Ma-con Centreplex where the duals were held in the past) would rock.” Fritts has been around wrestling since his high school days, when he grappled for leg-endary Blair Academy in New Jersey. Fritts then went on to wrestle at Bucknell Universi-ty before joining the army. There, he coached wrestling for 20 years in Hawaii, Germany and Iran before returning to the States to coach at Woodward Academy for 10 years. “I was one of the pioneers for Hawaiian wrestling,” he proudly stated. During an interview with Score, Fritts mentioned that dual-style wrestling focuses more on the team than traditional, which may be why the fans seem to enjoy it.

“It gives more wrestlers an opportunity to participate,” he said. “There is more focus on the team concept as it gives kids a chance who don’t qualify for the traditional.” While in traditional, each weight class has just one wrestler per team with just his coaches watching, dual wrestling allows 28 total wrestlers and up to four per weight class. Also, coaches are allowed to move any wres-tler up one weight class to compete, if they feel they have a better chance to win. “For example,” Hennebaul explained, “if a coach has a strong wrestler in one weight class, but his opponent is state champion-cal-iber, the coach can move that kid up a weight class and bring in a JV kid to be a ‘sacrificial lamb’ of sorts. Then, his stronger wrestler can have a better chance in the next weight class.” While 28 are dressed out for the meet, only 14 may wrestle. This gives coaches the chance to get their team in the better matchup.

HISToRY LeSSoN … The first state dual tournament was held in Macon in 2002, when the Atlanta Takedown Association first held the event. McEachern, Ringgold, Lovett, Northgate and Jefferson each won state titles that year. Ring-gold and Jefferson each won titles in the tra-ditional championships as well in 2002. Since that first year, McEachern has stepped onto the top of the podium two more times while Collins Hill has grabbed the gold in four of the last six years, including the last three in Class 5A. In Class 4A, Ringgold has won two more while six other programs won one championship each since 2002, including Loganville last year. Lovett won the first two Class 3A dual titles, but Gilmer has won three of the past six. The other five championships were won by different programs each time, except in 2008 when Cass and Henry County shared the championship. Dawson County and West Laurens have each won two state dual titles in Class 2A, but Jefferson has won the past two after mov-ing up from Class A. The Dragons had won all seven dual titles in Class A before joining Class 2A in 2009. While Jefferson and Collins Hill have been especially dominant in recent years, Hennebaul has seen some top programs fall over time. “It’s like the NFL or Major League Base-ball,” said Hennebaul about the competition in Georgia high school wrestling. “It is hard to get to the top, but it is even harder to stay there.” Black can be reached at [email protected].

Collins Hill, Ringgold dominate the mats in state’s two highest classificationsWrestling is a sport typically dominated by

a handful of schools in the state of Geor-gia. While other high school sports have dynas-ties come and go, wrestling seems to be owned by just a few programs, with Class 5A and 4A proving to be prime examples. Class 5A has seen Collins Hill win the last three traditional titles and the last three dual crowns, while Class 4A was dominated by Ringgold for much of the last decade.

WHeRe eAGLeS SoAR … In the highest classification, the Collins Hill Eagles have been on top dating back to 2002. Former coach Cliff Ramos got the ball rolling and current coach Josh Stephen has continued those winning ways in his first year in charge. “I feel the same as I did last year except I carry more responsibility to continue the suc-cess,” says Stephen, who served as an assis-tant before becoming the head coach. “Any coach who cares about what he’s doing is go-ing to put pressure on themselves to win.” Collins Hill recently won its seventh straight traditional area 7-AAAAA title and, in the process, qualified all 14 of its wrestlers for the state sectionals. “I feel like all 14 can do big things at the end of the season,” said Stephen. “They are all capable.” The Eagles have been steeled for com-petition by engaging in a national schedule while carrying a target on their backs. “We as a coaching staff are constantly reminding them that there is a target and we are going to get the best from our opponents,” Stephen acknowl-edges. “I have always been a huge advocate for wrestling the toughest schedule you can.” The Eagles head coach says he teaches his team that there is always someone who can beat them and it is the losses that make teams better. “I prepare my team to be the best in the country.

If you do that, then State will take care of itself.” But how do you get ready for the rest of the state? Stephen says he has to change the plan up a bit. “You want to have your team peak at the right time.” Part of that comes from going against strong Gwinnett compe-tition. “We have great coaches in Gwinnett who want nothing more than to beat us. If we can be successful in our county, then we’ll do very well around the state.” One of those Gwinnett teams that should offer a challenge is Parkview. The Panthers will be looking to disrupt the dynasty and Parkview coach Chris Hardin knows his team is capable. The team is coming off an eighth straight Area 8-AAAAA title and faces many of the same Gwinnett teams Collins Hill does. “With us being in Gwinnett, we get to see some of the best teams and individuals in the state on a regular basis,” Hardin said. “With our Area being so tough, we feel very prepared to take on the rest of the state.” The success culminated a few years back in 2006 when Parkview won both the tradi-tional and dual titles, and Hardin admits the success all starts with the individual wrestlers. “I think it is very important that each wres-tler creates goals for themselves and the team at the beginning of the season,” Hardin says. “Our success also helps in motivation (and meeting the goals). Success breeds success.” With yet another Area title in their pock-et, the Panthers have momentum and that could help Parkview knock off Collins Hill. “Once you string a couple victories together, the wrestlers will feed off the momentum and keep the ball rolling,” Hardin says. “These guys fight for each other and are very sup-portive…that support amongst teammates is crucial to team success.” Marietta coach Tommy Carthers and the Blue Devils would love another chance at Col-

lins Hill. “(The Eagles) beat us pretty soundly (earlier this season), but I just reminded the team that just being the best in our room does not mean a lot everywhere,” Carthers says. “We have to work to be the best we can.” Teamwork will be key to a successful sectionals and finals says Carthers, especially after his team won the Area 5-AAAAA title. “Our wrestlers definitely feed off each other, they have really pulled together this season and it has shown.” As a coach, Carthers val-ues the idea of teamwork in wrestling. “Each individual knows that by doing the absolute best that they can, it helps the team when they score bonus points.” In 4A, Ringgold has claimed three du-als titles since 2002 and four traditional ti-tles in five years since 2002, but the school has since dropped down to 3A. Look-

ing to become new dynasties, Loganville and Alexander have appeared on the scene re-cently, each claiming a title last season while Whitewater and Effingham County claimed the top prizes in 2009. Collins Hill’s Stephen may only be in his first season but he knows that once you taste a championship, you want it again and again. “The guys are motivated to fight and win state titles. That never gets old.” At the state finals, plenty of schools will seek that winning feeling that the Eagles have held a monopoly on for so long. Proctor can be reached at [email protected].

Talented individuals, teams highlight the field in these three classifcationsFebruary means championship season for

winter sports across the state of Geor-gia, and action is heating up on the mats as the 2011 GHSA Traditional Wrestling State Championship takes place at the Gwinnett Center. Dozens of individuals have battled their way through area and sectional qualifi-cation to book their spots in the state brackets, and now it’s time for them to give it their all in search of coveted state titles for their re-spective schools.

cLASS A … Bremen knows a thing or two about win-ning state titles having taken home Class A’s top prize in both 2009 and 2010. With eight returning wrestlers who scored points in last year’s traditional state tournament, the Blue Devils are in prime position to make it a three-peat this weekend. Ryne Eriquezzo (135 pounds), Sam Murphy (171), Travis King (189), Joe Bexley (285) and a host of other Bremen grapplers have a good chance of capturing individual state championships. Gordon Lee, Wesleyan and Holy Inno-cents’ will be looking to unseat Bremen at the top of the heap. Both the Trojans and Wolves return five point-scorers from the 2010 event. Mika Clark (112), Alex Spires (119), Jacob Bryson (130) and Ethan West (135) lead the way for Gordon Lee. Wesleyan relies upon Zack Rindik (125), Brent Hornbuckle (140) and Kevin Brou (285) while Holy Innocents’ could enter the mix if Wes Fanning (130), Ja-son Grimes (152) and Lee Davis (160) turn in standout performances.

cLASS AA … If Bremen is a powerhouse, Jefferson is nothing less than a dynasty. The Dragons (see feature on page 4) have won 10 con-

secutive traditional state titles dating back to 2001, the first eight in Class A and the last two in Class AA. Jefferson head coach Doug Thurmond recently spoke about the balance of individu-al and team competition. “We can’t lose sight of the team aspect of the season,” Thurmond told the Gainesville Times heading into the traditional event this week and the dual state championship next week. “We’ll continue to develop the guys individually, but we are still focusing on looking at this as a team and not just individual efforts.” Thanks in part to Sonoraville, the Dragons’ stranglehold on team state cham-pionships could be in jeopardy. Despite go-ing up against a tough Calhoun team, the Phoenix managed to dominate the 7-AA Area Championship with seven individual champs and more than 300 points. So-noraville qualified 14 wrestlers for section-als and is without question Jefferson’s big-gest threat this weekend. Class AA action could be especially in-tense at the 140 weight class. Sonoraville’s Layson West, Chattooga’s Brandon Siffles, Dade County’s Caleb Massey and Buford’s Michael Lane are expected to be among the contenders for individual titles. Although his Westminster team and other Metro Atlanta schools—including a dangerous Lovett squad—are looking up at Jefferson and Sonoraville, Sam Bondurant has his sights set on a strong showing at 145. Bondurant is the Wildcats’ lone area winner this season, as he defeated Lovett rival Connor Johnson in the 6-AA Area Championship. As a senior, Bondurant knows what it takes to win both individual and team state championships. “The goal is always to qualify as many

guys as possible to maximize your chances of getting points,” Bondurant explained. “Once you get to state, it’s all about mental tough-ness. If you wrestle with the willpower of knowing that it’s ‘lose and you go home,’ you can usually find a way to get the job done.”

cLASS AAA … The Gilmer Wildcats have been getting the job done so well on the mats that they boast two of the last three Class AAA state ti-tles and three of the last six. Gilmer is bidding for a fourth trophy to go along with triumphs in 2005, 2008 and 2010. However, Gilmer will continue to deal with significant competition from teams within its own area, 7-AAA. The Wildcats join Heritage, Catoosa and Lafayette to make 7-AAA one of the most difficult wrestling ar-

eas in the entire state. At last month’s duals, Gilmer edged top-seeded Lafayette for the title before Heritage took down the Ramblers for second place. “When the (GHSA) realigned, they ob-viously didn’t look at the wrestling world,” Heritage coach Kenny Hill told the Chatta-nooga Times Free Press. “It was already a tough region, even without Gilmer getting put in there. Now it’s probably one of the best areas, if not the best area, in the state.” The 7-AAA trio, though, is not alone. Henry County, Woodward and Locust Grove all have the potential to claim a title in what could be the most wide-open clas-sification in Georgia. Dimon can be reached at [email protected].

Team Georgia sponsoring state championship; tournament to be aired on GPBThe Georgia Amateur Wrestling Associa-

tion, better known as Team Georgia, has been helping spread the sport of wrestling in Georgia since 1979. For more than 30 years, Team Georgia has been an ambassador of the sport and raised interest to record heights. With over 7,000 members of Team Georgia this year, the sport is still growing rapidly. Now, Team Georgia has taken the next step by taking wrestling to a place it has never been before in the state of Georgia. Team Georgia has partnered with GPB to become the prin-cipal sponsor of the GHSA State Wrestling Championship broadcast. For the first time ever, viewers will be able to

tune their televisions to championship-caliber high school wrestling.

THe MAN IN cHARGe … Anthony Flatt is the man responsible for completing the deal with GPB. Flatt has been involved with Team Georgia since 2004 and has been the State Chairman of the organiza-tion for the last three years. “Our reason for being is to promote the growth of wrestling in the state of Georgia, and that’s at all levels,” he explained when

asked about the organization’s mission. “From the youngest wrestlers all the way up through college,” Flatt said. Team Georgia’s dedication to the sport is apparent; however, even in their Mission Statement, it’s clear the organization’s dedica-tion to youth goes beyond sports, and that they also want to help make successful young men. “With an uncompromised commitment to safety, opportunity, character, training, and customer satisfaction,” the mission states. “Consistently increase the number of Georgia wrestlers that attend and graduate college.” Flatt talked about the relationship be-tween the GHSA and Team Georgia in a re-cent interview with Score Atlanta. “During the summer time, we have programs for high schoolers and we develop high schoolers through Team Georgia,” he said. “Once the high school season starts we could continue to promote high school, but we don’t. We promote the kids to compete with their school and compete through the GHSA. When that season is over in February, in April we start our spring and summer season, and that has high school wrestlers in it.” Flatt’s attempts to garner excitement for the sport around the state have been noticed by others. Recently, Flatt was named USA Wrestling State Chairperson of the Year. “Our perspective is that the Georgia Am-ateur Wrestling Association, which is known as Team Georgia USA, is a non-profit orga-nization that teaches life skills,” Flatt said after winning the award. “We look at this as primarily as a non-profit service organiza-tion. We are growing our girls program, our developmental program, and many other activities. We are much more than just a

state-level club.” Team Georgia offers young kids a

chance to participate in a sport that normally isn’t offered until high school. There is no ex-perience required to get started, nor is there a required talent level to join. That is not what this organization is about.

eXPeRIeNce IS keY … “We’re very much an organization that believes in grassroots development,” Flatt said. “The way you make it onto one of our National teams is first you have to come out and com-pete and go through all the practices and prep-arations for those teams. And then secondly, if there is more than one wrestler wanting to make one of those teams at a particular weight class then we would have a wrestle-off and the winner of that wrestle-off would be established as the No. 1 wrestler at that spot and the other wrestler would be an alternate.” Team Georgia’s goal isn’t to win tourna-ments, but to help kids improve as wrestlers and give them as much experience as pos-sible. “Team Georgia runs about 100 events annually and then we are going to 10 na-tional events a year. And we are increasing the amount of events we go to as the sport is growing and as the funds become available,” Flatt said. Team Georgia and the GHSA’s relation-ship is circular. “It’s our Team Georgia USA wrestlers that are the six-to-eight year-olds that then grow into middle school wrestlers that then grow into high school wrestlers under the GHSA,” Flatt said. Team Georgia is the feeder program. Then, by sponsoring GHSA events like the state championship, Team Georgia is able to give back and receive more publicity for their cause. It is a win-win for wrestlers, parents and fans alike. Watson can be reached at 404-256-1572.
