Round 6 saw us back at home to tackle Gepps Cross in what was another massive game for the A grade team. With some key personnel missing and a few boys struggling with sore spots, it was going to take a big effort to get the job done and remain unbeaten.

The first quarter was pretty even with both sides having some good patches. Gepps scored 4 goals to our 3 and held a 7 point buffer at the first break.

We then started to get some fluent ball movement going and dominate the midfield and it looked like we would break the game open. We kicked a couple of goals clear and had all the momentum only to let them reply with 3 late goals through some undisciplined acts and lack of concentration. Playing in patches is something we have done a fair bit this year and we need to fix this up come the business end of the season. We scored 3.6 to 4.0 in the term and still remained behind by 7 points at the main break.

The feeling was still very positive at half time as we had dominated periods of the game and just had to tighten up a few areas. The 3rd quarter did however belong to the opposition and they kicked away to lead by 16 points at the final change. We seemed to lack some intensity at times and just went off the boil a little so it was going to take a huge effort to reel them in.

The first 10 minutes of the last quarter was pretty tight with not much scoring and time was running out as we approached time on still trailing by 18 points. We scored a point and then got on a roll and piled on 3 goals in 5 minutes to hit the front by a point with 2 minutes remaining. We kept our heads and showed show real poise to hang on in a thriller. Final scores Pembroke 14.14-97 to Gepps Cross 14.13-96. An awesome, gritty effort by the boys!Nick Worrall was outstanding all day, taking many contested marks and kicking 3 goals, Jaiden Pengelly was another standout, winning many hard balls and kicking 2 important goals and Skipper Jack Green was hard at it all day in the middle and had a big influence on the game.

In Defence Ollie Harms and Jake Van der Hoek continued their stellar form and Alex Rowe and Heath Rusby were both solid all day. Ben Wood continues to play well each week and also kicked 2 good goals.

Sam Harms came into the side and kicked 2 important late goals and his defensive pressure was great all day and Max Bawden had his best game for the kings since returning to the club this year.

This week we travel down South to face Morphettville Park at Kellett Reserve as we look to lock in a top 3 spot and keep our unbeaten run intact. Looking forward to seeing lots of support down there on Saturday.

After a great win against the top side in Woodville South, Round 6 saw The Kings Reserves up against the 3rd place Gepps Cross and another challenge but this time on our home deck.

The weather in the days leading up to the game had been wet so we prepared for a wet weather game however such is the condition of Haslam this year (and every year) this was not required as the ground drained away nicely and we got to play in good conditions.

With Pol Captaining the side for the first time this year, he lead the boys out onto the ground for what was to be another good challenge for our boys. The first was just that, although our midfield were getting first use through Maxi Read’s tap work, we a weren’t able to capatlise, we weren’t being beaten but we were being challenged. Having said that we had more use of the ball and certainly had the ball in our forward 50 for a majority of the quarter but not with enough depth that was a focus. The quarter did finish in our favour with 5 scoring shots to 2 but only a 3 point advantage. 2.3-15 to 2.0-12

The second we started to take real advantage of Ready’s dominance and the mids got on top, Zoanetti got moved onto their dangerous forward and then things clicked. We were dominant for a majority of the quarter and had more of the forward 50 entries and they were much deeper however our percentage for scoring was still down, kicking 4.3 for the quarter and went into half time well up. Izaak Twelftree was playing up great debut game and well on top at CHF, watch this space he could be anything! Halftime The Kings lead 6.6 – 42 to 3.0-18.

One thing about big clubs is you know they are going to challenge you when the time came, anyway they can whether it be on the ball carrier, score board or just with physical presence and Gepps were going to come. They got on top of us physically and started to read Ready and Duhne’s tap work and dominance and for only the second time this year we lost our composure and left our game plan. We were getting beaten around the ground but our defence stood tall and quelled many of their forward entries managing to ensure we stayed in a dominant position during the quarter. Gepps’ physical intimidation got to us a bit (and some really dubious umpiring decisions by their 19th onfield player, whatever the dumpy umps name is!) ad Bred’s and Duhne came off the worse for it after getting caught retaliating and then questioning the decision, not worth a card boys but just remember it is always the retaliator that gets caught … just saying. We lost the quarter 4.1 to 3 straight, one of only 7 for the year, but considering their dominance it could have been much worse. 3 quarter time score 9.6-60 to 7.1-43.

At the last break we talked about composure and not letting the opposition get on top of through physicality, to match it, but most importantly not to leave our game plan. The boys were great and dominant in all areas on the ground. We won the quarter easily with Gepps only scoring 1 point for the quarter, whilst we kicked 2.4 (still a bad conversion rate). Despite a number injuries to key players it was a well fought out win and one to be proud of. Final Score 11.10-76 to 7.2-44.

Players that deserve a mention but didn’t get in the 5 were Breda, Ployak, L, Switala, Neshy, Benno and Lake

In round 6 our Glamours came up against a previously struggling Gepps Cross in our final game before the bye. As it has been every week in this 8 game season it was very important to come away with a big win as we looked to push into second spot on a very tight ladder. The rotation of players continued this week as we brought in 4 players for their first game of the season with Jake Brennan, Ben Cox, Jordan Switala and Alex Brown. All 4 of these blokes came in with the hunger to prove themselves and its this kind of drive and pressure on team selection that’s been pushing the selected boys to perform all year.

The lads were buoyed by our return home to Haslam for only the second time this season and it showed with a blistering first quarter. It was evident from the beginning that we were a class above our opposition as we dominated all over the ground. Our midfield could barely be touched with Ben Cox, Jason Raz and Justin Dealiveria all clearly dominating and Jake Brennan coming off the back off the square providing plenty of drive forward. This meant our forwards were getting plenty of opportunities with multiple entries meaning Mitch Zilm and Todd Bevan could really get on top. A 6 goal to nothing quarter saw us go into the first breaky up 6.5.41 to 0.

The second quarter brought more of the same as I called on the boys to have the game dead and buried by half time with another big quarter. Our continued dominance in the midfield and our rock solid defence that was also providing plenty of rebounding run meant that the forwards were getting a ton of opportunities once again. Jeremy May and Jake Brennan were calving off the half back, dominating their opponents on the rebound and using their skill to drive attacks into our forward 50. Another 6 goals to nothing quarter meant we went into the main break with a massive 82 point lead but the job was far from done.

In a season with only 8 games and a ladder as tight as ours is at the top it is vitally important to capitalise on big percentage boosting wins. It was put to the boys at half time to be ruthless in this game and ensure we came away with as big a win as possible. The message was heard loud and clear and our boys did not let up in the slightest as we piled on 8 goals in what was easily our most dominant quarter for the season. It was clear that this was going to be another totally dominant 4 quarter effort and our ruthless mindset was bound to carry on into the fourth quarter as Gepps Cross tired further. The score at the final break 20.15.135 to 1.2.8 with a massive 127 3 quarter time lead.

The tale of the fourth quarter was much the same as our dominance continued. One of the most pleasing aspects of this performance was the fact that we did not slow up or take our foot off the gas at all. Even as we kicked another goal late with about 90 seconds on the clock our mindset was to quickly get back to the middle and set up and go again to try and get another goal to increase our lead further. This is such a good attitude to have and it shows just how hungry we all are for success this season and it doesn’t matter if we’re 160 points up or 1 goal up we’ll still be pushing and looking to score. A totally dominant 4 quarter performance from the Glamours with another 5 goals in the last meaning we ran out 160 point victors with a scoreline of 25.20.170 to 1.2.10.

Unbelievably impressive from the boys and great to see us heading into the bye in second spot. Our attention now turns to SMOSH in round 8 in what is looming as a playoff for second and easily our most important game before finals. Love your work Glams, go Kings!!
