Philanthropy in Dubai In 2015, the United Arab Emirates was listed as the world’s leading aid donor, contributing US $5.1bn to poorer nations in 2014, according to figures released by the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development. In Dubai, International Humanitarian City has delivered more than 1.3 billion dirhams in humanitarian assistance via its members – which include UN agencies and NGOs – in the last three years. And with humanitarian action now the UN’s costliest activity – more so than its peacekeeping operations – philanthropy is absolutely necessary.

His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum is the vice president and prime minister of the United Arab Emirates (UAE), and ruler of the Emirate of Dubai. He is responsible for the growth of Dubai into a global city, as well as the launch of a number of major enterprises including Emirates Airline, DP World, and the Jumeirah Group. Sheikh Mohammed has overseen the development of numerous projects in Dubai including the creation of a technology park and a free economic zone, Dubai Internet City, Dubai Media City, the Dubai International Finance Centre, the Palm Islands and the Burj Al Arab hotel. He also drove the construction of Burj Khalifa, the tallest building in the world.

Philanthropic Initiatives of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum

Dubai Cares is playing a key role in helping achieve the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 4, which aims to ensure inclusive and quality education for all and promote lifelong learning by 2030, by supporting programs in early childhood development, access to quality

primary and secondary education, technical and vocational education and training for youth as well as a particular focus on education in emergencies and protracted crises. The Mohammed Bin Rashid Global initiatives (MBRGI)

The Mohammed Bin Rashid Global Initiatives is a charitable foundation which consolidates the work of some 33 charitable foundations, entities and initiatives which together implement more than 1,400 development programs, contributing to the support of more

than 130 million people in 116 countries in collaboration with over 280 strategic partners, including governmental institutions, private sector companies, as well as regional and international organizations.

Cultural humanitarianism In 1998, His Highness set up the Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Centre for Cultural Understanding (SMCCU), a not-for-profit organisation that aims to raise awareness and demystify the local culture, customs, and religion of the United Arab Emirates. Operating under the motto "Open Doors. Open Minds", SMCCU aims to improve cross-cultural understanding and communication between UAE locals and guests visiting or residing in the UAE. An initiative by Sheikh Mohammed in 2015 saw Dubai's Metro stations turned into art galleries in the period leading up to Art Dubai 2015.

Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Humanitarian & Charity Establishment: The humanitarian services of this establishment go beyond Dubai and the UAE to all needy people round the world. These services include financi al aid to needy families, both national and expatriate, in addition to education and food. They include maintaining and building houses for citizens, financing charitable projects in the education and health fields, building mosques outside the UAE, providing aid to people of determination and for sponsoring orphans.

His Excellency Abdul Aziz Al Ghurair Al Ghurair is also the CEO of Mashreq Group. He was appointed to the role in 1990 and has since steered the bank into becoming a world-class financial services institution. Under his 17-year tenure the bank’s assets have risen to AED 72.6 billion as of June 2007—a 50.3 per cent increase from 2006.

Abdulla Al Ghurair Foundation for Education, a multi-billion dirham charitable venture set up by UAE businessman Abdul Aziz Al Ghurair to provide Arab youth from underprivileged backgrounds access to higher education. The foundation aims to place 15,000 students in universities over 10 years.

Dr Reem Osman holds a master’s degree in eye diseases, surgery and in business administration from the University of Wollongong. As CEO of Saudi German Hospital Dubai since 2012, she has been awarded by many global and regional institutions for her accomplishment in business and humanitarian work. Some of her notable awards are: Middle East Women Leaders Excellence Award; Forbes Middle East — 200 Most Powerful Arab Women; Ambassador for Humanitarian Action by Sheikh Zayed Giving Initiative Organisation; and Goodwill Ambassador for Women and Children by Arab Women Foundation.

The Arab Women Foundation an Arab non-governmental organization for research and programs that aims to increase Arab women’s roles in the social, political and economic and Sports fields; expand women’s participation in senior positions; and empower women to reach leadership.

Mohamed Alabbar Mohamed Alabbar is a global entrepreneur with active interests in real estate, retail, luxury hospitality and now e-commerce, technology, logistics and the food industry, Alabbar is the founding chairman of Emaar Properties, the leading developer of iconic assets such as Burj Khalifa. He is also the chairman of Eagle Hills, the Abu Dhabi-based private investment and real estate development company, and the chairman of Americana Group, a Kuwait-based pioneer in food industries.

Dubai International Humanitarian City The International Humanitarian City (IHC) was founded in 2003 by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum. The city was created by the merger of Dubai Aid City (DAC) and Dubai Humanitarian City (DHC). It is the one and only non-profit, independent, humanitarian free-zone Authority, hosting a community of members comprised of UN organisations, international non-governmental organisations, intergovernmental organisations, and commercial companies.

Dubai World Trade Center The mission of the Dubai World Trade Center is to deliver ‘Destination Dubai’ for the region, by providing a world-class business networking platform with integrated end-to-end services. Dubai International Financial Centre

The Dubai World Trade Centre has played a pivotal role in the growth of international trade for the Middle East, since its creation in 1979. Today it is the region’s largest purpose-built complex for events and exhibitions. Emirates NBD Emirates NBD is the largest banking group in the Middle East. It is headquartered in Dubai and employs 9,000 staff. The bank currently manages 221 branches and 1,023 ATMs and SDMs in UAE and overseas. It

operates through different business segments: Retail Banking and Wealth Management, Wholesale Banking, Islamic Banking (IB), International, and Information Technology and Operations. In 2016, the bank’s total assets amounted to US$121 billion and net profit reached US$1.97 billion.

Goldman Sachs Dubai Goldman Sachs (GS): One of the oldest banking firms founded in 1869 and headquartered in New York City, GS offers a wide range of services spread across four divisions - investment banking, institutional client services, investing and lending and investment management. Goldman Sachs reported net revenues of $32.07 billion for 2017 fiscal year, of which investment banking division contributed $7.37 billion. The revenue generated in the investment banking division was the highest among all divisions.

Morgan Stanley & Co. International plc Founded in 1935, the global firm employs 55,794 employees spread across multiple countries. It reported net revenue of $37.9 billion in FY 2017, of which the

investment banking segment contributed $1.4 billion, increasing from $1.3 billion a year ago. Apart from the usual capital raising, M&A, corporate restructuring services, the firm also offers diversified services like prime brokerage, custodian, settlement and clearing, etc.

National Bank of Abu Dhabi Established in 1968, the National Bank of Abu Dhabi is the largest lender among banks in UAE. It provides corporate, retail, private, investment, and Islamic banking services. The bank is headquartered in Abu

Dhabi and is present in 19 countries across the world. The National Bank of Abu Dhabi employs 10,849 staff. In 2016, the bank reported total assets of US$114 billion and posted a net profit of US$1.44 billion.
