In celebration of Saint Patrick’s Day and how lucky weare to be supported by such an incredible community, theMystic Irish Parade in year fourteen welcomes and thanksyou for joining us this parade day, with Irish spirit andtons of green!

Welcome ALL to the 14th Annual Mystic Irish Parade indowntown Mystic, Connecticut!

The Mystic Irish Parade Foundation, family and friends havehonored the holiday joyously in Irish spirit all month long inpreparation of the annual parade day! Over a decade ago, afew of friends joined together to celebrate their Celtic heritage.In an effort to continue the celebration of their Irish spiritand cultural traditions with their beloved community, theydecided to start planning what is now the most renownedparade in Eastern CT and one of the best in the state!

The Mystic Irish Parade Foundation continues to celebrateeach year as an 100% volunteer driven organization,supported by team members dedicated to promoting Irishheritage and organizing a spectacular parade for thecommunity! The MIPF is a registered 501c3 nonprofit andall donations are tax deductible.

Each year, a sliver of Ireland is brought to the small town ofMystic, Connecticut and friends & family from near and farcelebrate together in support of the Mystic Irish ParadeFoundation! This organization is composed of an outstandingteam of local residents, business leaders and communityvolunteers. The dedicated team plans, executes and deliversan unforgettable Mystic Irish Parade that has transformed intoMystic’s largest single day celebration!

Kicking off at 1:00 pm, the parade, extending from the MysticSeaport Museum to the Mystic Art Association, GrandMarshal Chief Darren Stewart of the Stonington PoliceDepartment will lead almost 2,200 local community memberswhile they march alongside creatively designed floats anddance to the Celtic music echoing throughout the village whileover 30,000 supporters cheer and celebrate the day!

The 2017 Mystic Irish Parade will be host to outstanding pipebands, more than any other parade in the state, as well as fife& drum units and high school area marching bands! And, for

the very first year, please join us in welcoming the Patriot BrassBoston Marching Band! This unit of the Patriot BrassEnsemble, a national non-profit organization committed toperforming for Veterans in long term care, brings qualitymarching brand performances to clients all over the greaterNew England area. With clients as substantial as ParamountPictures, Pepsi and Marriot International, all proceeds will goto support the mission. With an incredible blend of marchingband beats and Irish anthems, they are sure to make this year’sparade the best yet!

The parade, funded by proceeds from events, the generosityof local business sponsorships and individual sale of raffletickets, is an annual celebration that has become a communitywide cultural tradition. Surplus funds from the Mystic IrishParade are donated to local charities in the area. A sincerethank you to the parade’s sponsors, volunteers, and mostimportantly…

The 14th Mystic Irish Parade is honored to haveStonington Police Chief, Darren Stewart, lead thecelebration as the Grand Marshal in 2017. Each year, theboard members of the Mystic Irish Parade Foundation(MIPF) select a member of the community whocontinuously dedicates their time and effort to improvingEastern Connecticut. Given the nature of not only hiscareer, but his leadership roles in the local community,the board found Chief Stewart to be a perfect role model,local inspiration and the ideal candidate to serve as GrandMarshal this year.

True to form, Chief Stewart accepted under one condition.“I’m accepting in recognition of the men and women ofthe Stonington Police Department and of police officersthroughout Connecticut who put themselves in harm’sway each and every day.”

Chief Stewart is a lifelong resident of Stonington, andhas participated in the Mystic Irish Parade since it began14 years ago. As a member of the Stonington Police Forcefor 33 years, he has also served his community as Chiefof Police for the past nine years.

He holds leadership positions in many law enforcementorganizations. He is President of the Law EnforcementCouncil of Eastern Connecticut, a member of the LawEnforcement Memorial Foundation Board and a VicePresident of the Connecticut Police Chiefs Association,among several others.

For 13 years, he has been an adjunct professor at SalveRegina University in Newport, RI. He also previouslyserved as adjunct professor at University of Connecticut.In 2016, Chief Stewart gave the commencement address

at UConn. He serves on the Criminal Justice and HomelandSecurity Advisory Board at Mitchel College.

Chief Stewart is a member of the Pawcatuck Lions Club and isChairman of the Risk Control Advisory Committee for theConnecticut Inter-local Risk Management Agency. He hasreceived a number of honors and awards, including theDistinguished Chiefs Award in 2012 from the PoliceCommissioner Association of Connecticut.

Chief Stewart and his wife, Beth, Executive Director of theStonington Community Center, are both active in the localcommunity. They have three daughters who all serve their localcommunities as well.
