The United States Peace Corps is a non-political, non-religious organization, which brings American Volunteers to various munispiu in Timor-Leste to work with communities on development projects on two- year assignments. The Peace Corps is an agency of the United States Government and was founded by President John F. Kennedy in 1961. General information about Peace Corps can be found at www.peacecorps.gov. Peace Corps will be conducting a 10-week training for Peace Corps Trainees (PCTs) in the English Education program. To support this training, Peace Corps will hire an English Education Technical Trainer who will collaborate closely with the Education Specialist and others on the training team. The Technical Trainer (TT) for English Education is responsible for delivering the training course for Peace Corps trainees who will teach English in Timorese schools. The training course is based upon the core competencies and the learning objectives for Peace Corps Timor-Leste Pre-Service Training (PST). The purpose of PST is to prepare Volunteers for their first six months at site and give them the skills to teach English in Timorese schools with Timorese teachers, build relationships and integrate into their rural communities. Implementation of this training may include formal group training sessions, small group sessions, assignments to be completed both in groups and individually, facilitated sessions; practice teaching with a Timorese teacher in a school; visits and observations to schools, and post-PST ongoing learning assignments. The work of the Technical Trainer (TT) is under the management and direction of the Director of Programming & Training and, during PST, under the Training Manager. The TT is responsible for working with other staff to plan and coordinate these activities and other activities that comprises the training. The Training Manager will oversee the technical trainer’s activities on a daily basis. This is a contracted position and requires living and working fulltime at the central PST training site, with frequent travel to training clusters and/or Dili. The TT will be required to follow a six-day work week, with additional preparation time and activities in the evening, and on weekend and holidays. Help in the design and delivery of practical activities that allow trainees to learn experientially by teaching Timorese students English and co-teaching with Timorese teachers;

Observe and provide feedback to Trainees during classroom observation, lesson planning and teaching practice;

Lead Peace Corps Trainees through a process of learning and discovery to understand the school system and community life and develop skills to be facilitators of change;

In collaboration with the PST Staff, ensure that trainees are meeting the required core competencies in all components of PST (technical, language, homestay program, safety and security training, medical training);

Review and utilize the Peace Corps PACA Field Guide and support Volunteers in learning and practicing community participatory process outlined in the guide;

Make recommendations for and call upon a limited number of guest speakers who can provide local context for the Education project framework;

Provide feedback to Trainees on the progress toward competencies and ability to meet Core Expectations and technical requirements of becoming a Volunteer;

As needed, coordinate with local community leaders and resource persons on implementation of different training activities including community meetings, and practicum for PACA.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: Education: Minimum requirement: Bachelor’s degree in English or in Education. Preferred: Teacher training license or certification Post graduate studies in Education or English Professional Work Experience:

Minimum:

At least 3 years’ experience teaching English

Demonstrated experience in communicative student-centered teaching approaches

Preferred:

Experience working or living in a cross-cultural environment demonstrating ability to adapt to local customs and values

Experience designing, delivering or evaluating training

Experience delivering training to English teacher

Experience facilitating a training for adults including both small and large group training

Evidence of facilitation skills and adult learning principle Previous experience working with Peace Corps or Peace Corps Volunteers

Language: Fluent speaker of English and Tetun. Note that you will be delivering teacher training in English.

Evidence of English language proficiency inferred based on experiences detailed in application materials as well as grammar, syntax, word choice, and sentence structure in written materials.

Preferred: Bahasa Indonesia or Portuguese

Attitude necessary: Must be willing to live for 12 weeks at the training site (outside of Dili) Ability to work within a cross-cultural team which includes American and Timorese Staff Strong computer, interpersonal communication, organizational and time management skills Personal skills: flexible, proactive adaptable, reliable, sense of humor, sensitivity to gender and diversity

Security Clearance: Candidate must be able to obtain a security clearance which requires a National ID Card and recent/valid Ministry of Justice Requerimento de Certificado de Registo Criminal. Candidates will also require a valid passport and must not have any restrictions on travel to the United States from previous experience. Salary: $45/day starting daily rate, paid for days worked
