News From The Executive Desk

Welcome to June! I think we have finally made it past the winter and the danger of frost—at least I hope so. In approximately a month, the Chamber will be hosting the 50th anniversary of Sidewalk Days. We have been planning for this event since last October and are really excited about how it is shaping up. We are almost at capacity already with vendors of all types; our entertain-ment is schedule is nearly complete, and our Kids Zone area will be back this year complete with a climbing wall, fun crafts, athletic games and more. Stay tuned for more details and please mark your calendars for July 7 and 8. You won’t want to miss this! We’ve been busy with other projects as well. Our membership directory is hot off the press and we plan to distribute it throughout this month and next, but please stop by our office if you are able and grab your own. Senator John Eichelberger will be our guest at this month’s breakfast on June 15th at Blue Heron Events and a link to RSVP can be found inside the pages of this newsletter and on our website. Speaking of website, Julie has been working hard for on our website. New law allows HCC to lower tuition for bordering out-of-state counties

(Hagerstown, MD) – Thanks to a new Maryland law, residents who

live in out-of-state counties that border Maryland will pay reduced

tuition, starting this fall.

For Hagerstown Community College, that means that residents in

Franklin and Fulton Counties, Pa.; Berkeley, Morgan, and

Jefferson Counties, W.V.; and Loudoun County, Va.; will pay $230

per credit this fall, compared to $246 for other out-of-state

counties. This will save these residents $48 on each three-credit

course and at least $960 on a 60-credit associate degree.

Greencastle-Antrim’s Taryn Parks wins PIAA 1600m gold,

becomes country’s fastest freshman.

Fueled by hunger to atone for wins that have eluded her as 2017’s

track season approached its climax, Parks won the PIAA 3A girls’

1600-meter run at Shippensburg University. Her 4:45.81 is not only

the fifth fastest in the country this year, but also the fastest time by

an American freshman this year and one of the fastest—if not the

fastest—times for a freshman in Pennsylvania history.

Well-women Exams: More than Just a Physical

An annual well-women exam is an opportunity to stay on top of your health. The appointment includes a

physical exam and discussion about your health to help identify serious health concerns before they become

life threatening. A well-women exam is tailored to your age, family history, past health history and need for

preventive screenings.

With an increased focus on patients’ well-being, physicians also see well exams as an opportunity to look at

the whole picture—physical and mental health.

“Depression and anxiety are more common for women,” says Nelson Echebiri, M.D., obstetrician and

gynecologist with Meritus Women’s Health Specialists-Robinwood [http://www.meritushealth.com/

Physician-Directory/E/Nelson-C-Echebiri-M-D-.aspx]. “From childbirth to menopause, women can experience

mood changes so it’s important to discuss mental health issues during a well-women exam.”

Daily struggles like finances, lack of time, relationship problems and parenting demands can produce

stress—and when left unchecked, cause serious health problems.

Stress, says Dr. Echebiri, can be a risk factor for weight gain, high blood pressure and cardiovascular disease.

Dr. Echebiri recommends these 10 strategies to help you cope with stress and anxiety:

Set aside a certain evening or afternoon for yourself and schedule an activity that will bring you pleasure.

Like a doctor appointment, putting the date on the calendar makes it more likely you’ll keep it.

Take breaks where and when you can get them. Look for 15 minute of relaxation while your child

practices sports or while you wait for a flight. Use the time for a quick burst of exercise, to listen to

music or read your favorite magazine.

Walk it off. Taking a walk can help lower stress hormones by increasing your endorphins. Even walking for

10 minutes can help you shed stress.

Live in the moment. Watch your children play in the park and take a snap shot of this moment in

time—they’ll be in college before you know it.

Stay connected to friends. Social support is key to managing stress. Call a friend or schedule a 30 minute

walk with a buddy or loved one.

Pick up a book. Reading can temporarily take you away from the present and into an alternative space.

Get enough sleep. According to the National Sleep Foundation, adults should aim for seven to nine hours

of sleep each night.

Eat a balanced diet of fruit, vegetables and whole grains.

Breathe deeply. Inhale slowly through your nose, let your belly expand and exhale through your mouth.

Don’t aim for perfection. It’s OK to say no, delegate and let someone else play the role of super woman.

Women are notorious for placing everyone’s needs ahead of their own. As a result, they often put off or

forget to schedule a well-women visit. If you need a primary care physician, contact Meritus Medical Group

[http://www.meritushealth.com/Our-Services/Meritus-Medical-Group.aspx] and schedule your well-women

exam today.
