Riverwood International Charter School djmunson, September 2010 2D PORTFOLIO: PRINCIPLES OF DESIGN These are the principles of design you should focus on for your 2D Portfolio. In other words, as you begin a new piece, choose one of the following to build your composition with. UNITY/VARIETY – Unity is how a piece is cohesive and can be through any element of art, or simply how the objects in the work are related. Variety is when an artist makes you look at a certain part or makes the artwork more interesting. BALANCE/EMPHASIS/CONTRAST – Balance can be formal, informal, or radial. Emphasis is when the artist manipulates the Elements of Art so that your eye is drawn to a particular area. Contrast is when an artist highlights the differences between elements in an artwork. RHYTHM – Rhythm is created when one or more elements of art are used repeatedly to create a feeling or organized movement. Rhythm creates a mood like music or dancing. REPETITION – Repetition, or Patterning, is the repeating of an object or symbol all over the artwork.

PROPORTION/SCALE – Proportion is created when all parts (sizes, amounts, or number) relate well to each other. Size relationships. Varying the Scale of an object can give your work more interest and create moods or feelings.

FIGURE/GROUND RELATIONSHIPS - The relationship between figure and ground is one of the most important relationships in design. In simplest terms the figure is what you notice and the ground is everything else.
