Case Study: Publisher provided XML

•  XML allowed for the automated process for 10,000 titles in 45 days •  Core process innovation: technology-enabled deep

tagging (rich semantic) the elements on a page •  Increased processing times for conversion 10X. •  Cost saving associated with titles being submitted with XML

was 30%. •  Most significant problem: tagging structure lacked maturity

•  Programmatic transform can keep XML current to evolving standard once ingested

•  Formats and output can be “Future Proofed” by storing XML with the asset.

Lessons from our Work with Publishers

•  Not all text is created equal: Complex titles push the boundaries of ebook standards & technology •  Both the publisher and the conversion service need to be clear about the

expected output

•  Converted format is not an exact replica of the printed text.

•  Shortening processing times: Publishers are under increasing pressure to speed up delivery of content to market

•  XML First may be critical in this regard.

•  Bottleneck: Multiple steps for QA are required to assure the ebook is both formatted correctly and the text is accurate

•  Standards must be dynamic: on the horizon - color, real-time & rich media •  Today’s Epubs will need to be regenerated as standards change
