Access covers and gully grates installed in the UK should meet therequirements of the European standard BS EN124. This applies to

all situations, road and off-road and all materials. Products designed

to BS EN124 are grouped and classified depending on their place

of installation.

It is the responsibility of the engineer to ensure that the correct product

is specified,

The appropriate class of manhole top or gully top to be used dependsupon the place of installation. The selection of the appropriate class is

the responsibility of the designer. Where there is any doubt the strongerclass should be selected.Clause 5 BS EN124

Today, more than ever before, quality is of paramount importance in

the construction of the road network, not just to manufacturers but

to suppliers, installers and road users alike. With ever increasing trafficvolumes, the strain placed on roads and upon the access covers and gully

grates within those roads, is at the highest levels ever.

In this climate, specifiers have become increasingly conscious of their

obligation to ensure road user safety by demanding products which are

manufactured and tested to the highest standards. This re-assurance

is afforded by specifying high quality, third party accredited products.Customers can be sure that products bearing the BSI Kitemark have

been independently certified as complying with BS EN124.

The Kitemark is recognised around the world as proof

that a product has been made, tested and fully complies

with the technical requirements of the Standard.

Saint-Gobain PAM UK manufactures its highway

products in accordance with the following three

Kitemark licences:

BS EN124: 1994,

BS 5834: Part 2 : 1983 and

BS 5834: Part 3 : 1985.

Saint-Gobain PAM UK manufacture a wide range of access covers and

gully grates each designed for a specific application. When selecting

a product it is important that the specification of each product is

considered in addition to the guidance contained within BS EN124 in

order to best meet the requirements of the application.

In many cases a number of products will be classified to the same

BS EN124 reference and group but may have specific and different

recommended usages.

Factors such as volume, speed and type of traffic plus any special

conditions such as narrow lanes, roundabouts, traffic lights, traffic

calming and bus routes need to be considered for road applications.

In off-road situations consideration should be given to the likelihood of

vehicle loading for parking or to gain emergency access, frequency of any

trafficking and the type of vehicles likely to traffic the product.

Guidance is given throughout this guide on the recommended applications

for each product.

LTS (Load Transfer System)

The LTS feature was designed specifically to reduce the strain the

casting creates in specific areas of the bedding material.

Large Corner Webs

The range has been optimised so that there is an

increased area where the load is concentrated

giving a reduction of measurable strain between

30% to 50% in the bedding.

Bonding Ribs

Rib design significantly improves bonding to the

bedding material creating a greater resistance to

lateral shift. This helps to avoid early separation and

cracking of the bedding material, which can cause

premature failure.

Rib Positioning

Positioning of the ribs plays a critical role in

reducing the risk of cracking the bedding material.

The position opposite the cover seating areas

reduces the risk of frame deflection and insures that

impact to the surrounding materials is limited.

Flange Stiffness

The thickness of the flange at the corners prevents

bending caused by dynamic loading. Prevention

of bending in this area reduces disturbance of the

bedding material.

The Inter-Ax Range

Product features

Developed following a research programme atNottingham University, the Inter-Ax range of traditional liftcovers has been developed with the research conclusionsin mind and incorporates the new LTS feature.

The Inter-Ax range has been specically engineeredto cope with all the varying trafc loadingsencountered on todays busy highways.

The D400 products are marked with one of the following trafc intensitymarkers to simplify specification and selection of the most appropriatecasting:

H for High traffic intensity locations

Nfor Normal traffic intensity locations

L for Low trafc intensity locations

All the Inter-Ax range has been developed for use with

Saint-Gobain PAM UKs LTS Polyester Resin Bedding Mortar(SAP: 190277 & 190556).

Inter-Ax also features a bre-optic point of drilling hole inthe cover, avoiding the underside cover webs to provideaccess into the sewer for bre-optic cameras.

Inter-Ax D400 - H

Recommended for use in trunk roads whereexceptional levels of fast-moving continuous heavytrafc are present and for the installation of seal plates.

Pamrex

Designed to withstand the rigours of modern trafc conditions,Pamrex is capable of withstanding loads in excess of the EN 124 D400requirement.

This is achieved in silence thanks to its unique elastomer gasket. Morerecent enhancements included improved ergonomic and securityfeatures.

Inltration

To dramatically reduce the amount of surface water entering thesewer system, engineers at Saint-Gobain Pipelines have developed aninnovative plug for the hinge housing.

The dual wiper plug reduces the amount of water entering thenetwork while at the same time enabling debris to be easily removed

from the hinge housing and an additional ring completes the no-ingressperformance.

Safety

Protecting eld personnel from the risk of injury and the below-groundnetworks from catastrophic failure are two of the primary concerns facingtodays engineers and municipal administrators.

Hinge incorporates a 90 blocking feature to prevent accidentalclosure.

Self-centering design of the gasket eliminates the need to guide thecover into position when closing

Lifting loops in the frame assists safe ofoading and installation withappropriate and safe equipment

The cover is designed to open and release the pressure if the sewerbecomes surcharged (provided that no additional lock has been fittedand that the frame has been securely anchored to the top of thechamber)

The cover opens to 130 to allow uninterrupted access. It can also becompletely removed if deemed necessary.

Aqua-Max Range

Easier, safer, more secure and highly efcient

Saint-Gobain PAM UK have always been at the forefront of product design anddevelopment, constantly pushing boundaries and with the new Aqua-Max grating,this theme continues.

Increased security

The Aqua-Max has an automatic passive spring locking system that secures thegrating firmly in place once it has been closed. This spring lock is standard on allAqua-Max products and is integrated into the grating itself.

A locking arm engages with a lug on the inside of the frame to preventunauthorised or accidental opening. A prising bar is required to lever the gratingopen at which point the locking arm elastically deects past the frame lug, allowingthe grating to be hinged open.

Increased safety

Saint-Gobain PAM UKs engineers have developed the markets rst truly captivehinged grating. Designers have generated a product that does not employ separatehinge pins.

The Aqua-Max grating is tted into the frame during manufacture and held securelyin place by a welded rear frame panel. This ensures that once assembled the gratingand frame cannot be separated even under the most arduous conditions.

Improved efciency

Aqua-Max has been designed with water absorption at the forefront of the engineersmind. The most efficient part of a grating is the area in immediate proximity to thekerb, where the vast majority of surface water is located during rainfall.

Designers have ensured that the Aqua-Max has a signicant water clearing areaadjacent to the kerb ensuring it is the most effective grating in its class.

Improved durability/lifespan Load Transfer System

In recognition of the importance of whole life costs in todays nancially prudent

environment, the Aqua-Max range has been exactingly designed with durability inmind. The frame incorporates the benets of the Load Transfer System (LTS) aswith the popular Opt-Emax and Inter-Ax ranges. In addition wedge seatings reduceand restrict grate movement which would otherwise lead to wear and ultimatelyto failure.

The Selecta kerb gully drainage unit in ductile iron with opening top andgrating for optimum access, is the professionals solution to the problem ofdraining rainwater.

Available in two sizes and two proles: Selecta Maxi and Selecta 500,Selecta units have been designed to ensure drainage performance whilstmaximising safety.

Screening of debris

A raised bar limits access to the sewer system for larger debris and some

objects carried by run-off water.

Anti-Obstruction

The surfaces of the bars are equipped with facets that are oriented to preventleaves or litter from blocking the drain.

Drainage

In the lower section of the gutter, the barsare arranged longitudinally in order tomaximise water drainage.

Operation

Full opening with two aps providesa wide unobstructed clear opening area tothe sewer system, well suited to the insertion of

cleaning or inspection equipment.

Opening

Both Selecta Maxi and 500 feature vandal resistant ductile iron spring barsto prevent unauthorised entry.

Grating and covers can be opened separately or together using a crow bar or

pick axe to obtain full access.

Closing

Applying a little pressure to the top of the cover or grating will ensurethat the spring bar activates and again provides an effective barrier againstunauthorised access.

Safety for Cyclists and Pedestrians

On the carriageway, the bars are perpendicular to the direction of the trafcin order to ensure safety for cyclists.

On the pavement side, the elimination of clearance on the hinge system andof any roughness on the surface of the cover ensures safety for pedestrians.
