Thank you for saving our cow...

We use Udder Comfort faithfully for our fresh cows. We also use it on any cow with mastitis or an elevated SCC. It is defi nitely the best product available, says Les Olson, Olson Dairy, Spring Valley, Minnesota, home to a 275-cow mixed herd, which includes a Brown Swiss Genetic Honor herd.

A while back, the Olsons were frustrated by high SCC that would creep up over 400,000. Using a combined approach of DHIA testing, culturing, comforting and culling, they made tremendous strides to get counts down at 165,000.

Udder Comfort is a big part of the process, Olson explains. We were even more convinced when our cow Katrina came off the trailer at the Minnesota State Fair with a leaky, rock-hard right front quarter.

There were samples of Udder Comfort yellow spray at the show parlor. We kept the quarter sprayed, and two days later she was the top three-year-old and Reserve Intermediate Champion Brown Swiss.

All I can say is: Thank You Udder Comfort for saving our cow.

For external application to the udder only after milking, as an essential component of udder management. Always wash and dry teats thoroughly before milking.

Where there is livestock, there is also dead stock. Its a quote not overrated in the farming community. It is really a fact of farm life. You learn this at a very young age on any farm, and ours is de nitely no exception. With my dad being a vet, I was always quite sure he could and should save any animal that was important to me. I remember one of my rst Jersey calves getting a miserable case of the scours. Butterscotch was outside in a water tank (not really sure why-but thats the memory) and so terribly ill she could hardly move. I was all of eleven years old and positive that my dad, with all his vet-erinary skills, could save her. No such luck. He tried, but to no avail, that little body just couldnt do it. I vaguely remember being mad at him for his lack of effort. The vet should know how to save every special animal. Over the years, I have matured in this idea, and now take comfort in knowing that if he cant save them, at least he tries, and when and if they do die, he can tell us why immediately, not to mention its handy having a veterinarian on the farm for those near death experiences. Dad is trained as a large animal veterinarian, but when you are on a farm, there is a token amount of small animals that no doubt need emergency veterinary attention. Kittens with their eyes glued shut? Give them mastitis tubes in their eyes and mouth. Sick sheep? Well, a sick sheep is usually a dead sheep, but try some of this. Donkey acting funny? Give her some Kaopectate (cow grade Pepto-bismal) to make her poop. Our dear Maggie was a fan of biting cows if she thought they were going to hurt someone, and one time I swung the cane back to tap her and stop her, so I could deal with the cow. The swing had more umpf behind it than I realized, and I knocked her out. A screaming phone call to Dad brought him running with some medicine, I had

made her brain start to swell up, but within minutes she was up and ne again. Bull wasnt a big fan of Bessie when we got her as a puppy, and he made this fact known more than once when she got too close to him in the presence of food. Dad has stitched up her face at least twice, and yesterday it was quite the production to hold the chubby thing still, so he could stitch up her leg. It wasnt a Bull in icted wound. We dont know what happened, but good thing we had an on farm vet. My sewing skills are pretty good, but Ive yet to try my hand at sewing skin together, though I know that day will come when my on farm vet may not be on farm, and I just might have to try it myself. I think part of the reason that no one in our family has a weak stomach is because we have grown up assisting with twisted stomach surgeries, and helping dad post cows and calves. I have a picture in one of my cookbooks drawn by seven year old me depicting me helping dad with a DA sur-gery. My children are no different, already learning to hold the ends of the plastic sleeve so Grandpa can cut the tips off, hold the suture container down so he can pull out the right amount, and listen to the gas bubbles that come out the cows stomach. It fascinates them as much as it intrigued us when we were little. They also like to be right there when he is posting a cow. What a biology lesson, learning what the lungs are, the heart, the intestines, and what colors they are supposed to be. My dad will constantly explain things as he goes, pointing parts out, talking about why she probably died, and showing things to Ira and Dane. I observed this being played out one day while I was working on the cow computer. Do you see this right here? Its her heart, thats why she died. Dane exclaimed as they were dissecting a card-board box with screwdrivers. Dane, Dane, do you see the color in here? Thats what was making her sick. We have to get the calf out. Ira very adamantly explains. I know they are learning about life and death. They are also learning that sometimes we have to shoot a cow that went down unexpectedly, but we will use her meat. She helped us out by making milk, and now she will help us out by feeding lots of people. Last week, we had a rough week around the farm, even

our vet was befuddled. The craziest death experience wasthe nice looking cow I brought in to check the status of hercalving and found a twisted uterus. Good thing my vet was just steps away. Dad reached in and shook his head, yes, atorsion it was. After the chains were attached on the legsof the rst calf, some twisting and turning was involved toget the uterus untwisted so the calf could come out easily.A backwards, live bull, followed minutes later by his notso live heifer twin. As we worked to turn the cow out of the stall to help her get up easier, she appeared dead. We hurriedly ran to start an IV of calcium thinking she had abad case of milk fever. Half a bottle in, she was most de -nitely dead. When we got her outside and opened her up to determine the cause of death, blood poured out. Dad saidsometimes when the uterus is twisted, the main artery run-ning through it becomes twisted as well, and if it develops ahole, it wont leak until it is untwisted again. Life and death are all a part of living on the farm, some-times seeing both in a matter of minutes. We are lucky we have a vet on the farm for all of those cases, good, bad, andotherwise. With him right there, there is always the chanceeven the worst ones can be saved, and if not, at least we have immediate answers to probing questions.

Jacqui, her dad, sister, and brother milk 550 cows andrun 1,000 acres of crops in the northeastern corner of Ver-non County, Wis. Her children - Ira (5) and Dane (3) - farm with her while her husband, Keith, works on a grain farm. She loves to cook, quilt and garden and wishes there were more hours in the day to get it all in. Farming and teachingothers about farming are her passions.

Turn to COPING | Page 38also needs to be considered. Some by-products have too small of particle size, such as beet pulp and soy hulls, and do not contribute to the total time the cow spends chewing her cud. Kilmer suggested adding a few pounds of straw or low-quality, mature hay to the diet of lactating cows to in-crease cud chewing to enhance rumen fermentation. Kilmer advised against reducing trace minerals and vitamins, point-ing out although you may not see the impact on production, it will affect the herds health. It could be a long-term disaster to reduced growth rates on heifers, reduced immunity on all animals and reduced fertility on both cow and heifers, said Kilmer, adding that reduced immunity can also lead to higher somatic cell counts. Feed additives should also be kept in the ration because they have a return of three to 14 times over their costs. Ad-

ditives to keep include ionophores, si-lage inoculants, organic trace minerals, yeast-based products, rumen buffers and biotin. At the Tools for Coping seminar, Lee Schulz, ISU Extension and Out-reach livestock specialist and assistant professor in the Iowa State Depart-ment of Economics, predicted the pro t margin for dairy producers will remain tight in 2013. He added there could be an opportunity for dairy farmers to get ahead by contracting feed and milk prices early to mid 2013. Elwynn Taylor, agricultural meteo-rologist at Iowa State University, fore-casted that the Corn Belt, as a whole, is most likely to have better yields than 2012, but still below trend. I do not an-ticipate this year will correct the lack of soil moisture, at least before June, he said. But things should not be as bad as they were in 2012.

Have you ever given any thought as to why people in some parts of the world do so well and others do not? I bet as farmers one of the rst reasons for that which comes to your mind is the soil. To that response, some would say you are only partially right. I watched a fascinating PBS show a little while back (yes, I watch crappy TV too, not just the educational stuff, I am not a complete nerd). Scholar Jared Diamond wrote a book by the name Guns, Germs and Steel which the three episodes of the show are based on. Diamond has traveled the world, and in 1974, he began to ponder what he calls the roots of inequity. As he says, the people of a place, such as New Guinea, are just as intelligent as and even more resourceful than their European counterparts, so why do people that live there have so little while others have so much? Why did Europeans end up dominating much of the world? The answer, of course, comes down to who had steel, who had guns and who carried and transmitted the germs. This is where it starts to become really interesting, and I think you will get a kick out of his conclusions as well. At the end of the last Ice Age about 13,000 years ago, the limited number of people throughout the world were all hunt-ers and gatherers living in the Stone Age. When hunting and gathering became dif cult due to weather changes, the people of the Fertile Crescent area of the Middle East started to cultivate plants. Yes, it was the farmers who started it all. Diamond says of the millions of plant species on earth only a limited number can be domesticated, and even fewer of those are actually useful. The most useful of these, plants such as wheat, rice and barley, are native to Europe and Asia. You need the right soil and climate to make it all happen on a large scale. A few thousand years later, animals started to be domesticated. Diamond says of all the animal species in the world, only 14 have ever been domesticated, and 12 of these were native to Europe and Asia. Diamond says only ve have become farm animals found across the globe the goat, the sheep, the pig, the horse and, the one he refers to as our champion the cow. Really. Those friendly bovines out in your barn helped to change the world. Dia-mond says, Their ability to provide meat, dairy and draft while reproducing them-selves and eating nothing but grass, has made cows a source of wonder throughout human history objects of worship, even

to which European civilization may owe its very existence. Well that is pretty impressive. Okay, so once cows are domesticated, they also gure out that those cows are not only food; they can be beasts of burden. They are able to farm much more land and grow a lot more food with the help of ani-mals which can till the land and carry the harvest. Oh, and lets not forget the wonder-ful bene ts of the fertilizer those cows sup-plied too, and the nice leather. Once every waking hour doesnt have to be lled with nding food, people have time to gure out things like how to make steel, how to make weapons and how to de-velop languages. We all know the stories of smallpox kill-ing Native Americans, but Diamond says up to 95 percent of the native people of North and South America were killed by germs, which moved much more quickly than the actual white people, germs that came from numerous generations of humans breathing and eating animal germs. With only about ve percent of the population remaining, the Europeans horses, steel and guns easily conquered the Americas. All of this world conquering is thanks to the rst farmers, the humble cow and her friends the goat, sheep, pig and horse. I am of course really summarizing all of this, Diamond wrote an entire Pulitzer winning book on this topic after years of re-search. To learn more go to www.pbs.org/gunsgermssteel or all three episodes are available for instant streaming through Net- ix.
