70 Mile Coastal Yard Sale - 20192
Since relocating to the east coast in 2013, Ontario native Nick Doneff has become a staple in the PEI music scene as a busy sideman and multi-instrumentalist.
Following the release of his debut record, Doneff has been steadily attracting more attention for his earnest songwriting and his magnetic live performances.
His song Old Dog has been featured on CBC’s flagship arts and culture program, Q, where host Tom Power described him as a cross between John Prine and Joel Plaskett.
Nick will be performing at the Wood Island Village (formerly Plough the Waves) on Sunday, September 22 from 1:00 - 3:00 pm.
Nick Doneff
Quilt RaffleLifetime quilt maker Bertie Cook has made many quilts.
This year’s quilt is a real beauty! Bertie Cooke remembers starting as a young girl sewing all
her own clothes. She married Charlie when she was 19 and there were soon many beds that needed to be covered to stay warm. She learned to quilt from books and from looking at quilts that were already made. She especially likes following patterns in an old book that her mother used to use to make quilts.
Bertie has no idea how many quilts she has made over the years or how long it takes to make one. Bertie states “a lot” when referring to the number and we suspect it’s around a 100. She has always felt it was important to have some extra quilts on hand in case a neighbour had a fire and needed to stay warm.
Bertie always has enjoyed quilting to pass the time. The selecting of the quilt design, then the Fabric, and finally the assembly are always great times to converse or to be mindful while being productive.
In a busy household of family she states “sometimes the fabric came from the cloth flour bags. These Baking flour bags came in large cloth bags sometimes with lovely patterns on them, these bags were highly sought after to be used for quilt making and for girl’s bloomers. She muses: the bag sold the flour not the other way around. Bertie often quilts alone, but has been to many a quilting bee at the local school house. She enjoys helping out a family member to design and put together a quilt.
To quilt one must choose a pattern, wash the fabric and cut the pieces, then piece them together, sew them with ¼ “ seam on the sewing machine, then they go into the quilt frame and quilting is begun. These are the fine stitches that make the quilt a quilt.
She is always interested in learning the stories behind the quilts or to try a new pattern. She shared an article about how quilts were used along the Underground Railroad. Slaves, while escaping from the south to the north, would look for homes hanging quilts on the line or in a window. The quilt patterns conveyed messages about where to travel or if it was a safe house to come into.
We wish to thank Bertie Cook for our lovely quilt this year and wish Bertie many more quilts to make.

"RCMP Safety Tips for the 70 Mile Yard Sale" RCMP are reminding homeowners, motorists, and pedestrians
to be extra vigilant during their travels during the 70 Mile Yard Sale.
During the sale, there is a considerable increase in traffic on our roads and there are many vehicles parking alongside the road at the various stops along the way. Motorists are reminded to be extra cautious anytime there are vehicles parked along the road as there will be many pedestrians on or near the roadsides during the sale.
Please take your time when parking and park safely - do not block or impede other traffic using the roadways or prevent emergency vehicles accessing locations. Safeguard yourself by being extra cautious when exiting or entering with your vehicles as you arrive and leave each site.
Homeowners need to be very aware of the people on their property and take steps to ensure no "unwanted guests" are able to go into their residences or outbuildings unless invited. As there is sure to be cash at each location during the sales, please take steps to ensure you secure it and avoid becoming a victim of an unwanted “shopper."
The RCMP wish all shoppers safe travels and "Don't Attempt to Drive and Shop at the same time!! "
