Festival Diary 2 - 26 May 2020

Introduction

Welcome to the second edition of our Up North Film & Television Festival. This year we have a great programme of events and special guests to whet your appetite for more northern film, TV and creatives.

We kick off with actor Kris Hitchen talking about what it was like to work with Director Ken Loach on the hard-hitting Sorry We Missed You. We have a rare screening of Oscar winning director, Pawel Pawlikowski’s Twockers, a 1998 TV film about bonfires, thieving and love in Halifax. We’re delighted to welcome back Dai Bradley (Billy Casper) for a screening of the classic Kes, and we’re joining Barnsley-born author Joanne Harris in celebrating the 20th Anniversary of Chocolat - a film that seemed to win every award going!

There’s plenty to get you laughing with our exclusive comedy events! Johnny Vegas joins his good friend Jack Carroll on stage to talk about Vegas’ career. Comedy legends Craig Cash and Phil Mealey join Halifax-born actor Neil Hurst on stage to talk about the cult TV hit Early Doors; and

actor Craig Parkinson (Line of Duty, Sandylands and Four Lions) and BBC Radio 6 Music’s Chris Hawkins have joined forces to bring you an evening of panel show comedy gold! They will be joined by guests from the world of TV, film, radio and comedy.

Music played a huge role in last year’s festival and we’re back with more…only bigger and better! We’re giving you the chance to see the film Northern Soul on the big screen followed by a Q&A with the award-winning director Elaine Constantaine. The night will end with the legendary Wigan Casino DJ Richard Searling providing the entertainment.

Join us for a party at the end of the festival with our big music weekender blow-out! The weekend kicks off with a solo gig from Maximo Park’s frontman, Paul Smith. Saturday sees Mark Radcliffe and his band UNE playing followed by a DJ set from our friend Chris Hawkins, and then we welcome back original Hacienda DJ Graeme Park to end the weekend on a high!
