Radiohead: 2 + 2 = 5

Are you such a dreamer To put the world to rights?

I stay home forever Where two and two always makes up five

I lay down the tracks Sandbag and hide January has April showers

And two and two always makes up five

It’s the devil's way now There is no way out You can scream it, you can shout It is too late now

Radiohead is a British, indie, rock band that is very successful in the indie rock genre. However, their success wasn’t achieved right off the bat. Like all musicians, it takes awhile to really take off.

The band-mates first met in Oxford, England in 1989. Radiohead consists of five members; Thom Yorke as lead vocals, Colin Greenwood on bass, Ed O’Brien on guitar, Phil Selway on drums, and Johnny Greenwood as lead guitarist. They got their name from a Talking Heads song entitled non-other than “Radio Head” off of the album “True Stories.”

The first album Radiohead launched was called “Pablo Honey”. Although this album was the bands big break, it did get their name out there with their first single “Creep”. By the time they released their second album, “The Bends”, they slowly began to gain a crowd of fans, especially when they released the song “Street Spirit (Fade Out)”, which became a top 10 hit.

Although, the first two albums gained them quite a few fans, the band really sky rocketed to super-stardom with the release of their third album, “Ok Computer”. The album spent seventy-one consecutive weeks on the UK Chart. “Ok Computer” ended up going platinum, and was later considered to be 90’s most significant album.

Band Biography:

The success from the third album, caused their fourth album, “Kid A” to go straight to number one, despite the fact that there was no major marketing plan and no singles released prior to the date “Kid A” was on the market to purchase. They later released “Hail to the Thief” later on in 2003. To this day it is considered to be their most politically charged album. The latest album they have put on the market is “In Rainbows”. The band put the album on the internet for anyone to download for free. Radiohead is definitely a band not about the money, but purely for the fans.

Radiohead has been recognized over the past two decades for their music over the world. They have been nominated for fourteen Grammy Awards, and have one three. In 2005, Rolling Stone Magazine ranked Radiohead the 73rd greatest band ever.

It has yet to be announced when Radiohead’s latest album will drop, but it is known they are making music as we speak. All that is known for sure for the time being is that there are many eager fans waiting for more music ("Biography of Radiohead").

This line in the lyrics represents George W. Bush declaring war on Iraq. The whole point of this being put into the song is to explain how some people question Bush’s authority. Others also wonder as to why George W. Bush is the one to declare war, and the public has no real say on the matter.

Where two and two always makes up five

Literary Reference:

Back

Personally, I take this lyric as the most important line through out the whole song. It basically sums up the whole meaning of what this song is about. The reason behind this is because it is mathematically and politically known that two plus two equals four. However, what this song is implying is that people do not have to be told what is the right thing to do or say. So, to “sum” it up, saying that two plus two equals five demonstrates verbally a rebellion towards politics having the final say in an important decision.

The historical reference to this lyric is talking about being in combat in the war of Iraq. When the word “Sandbag” is said, it refers to the sandbags you are behind to be covered from enemy weapons. When the word “hide” is said, it is used to represent hiding from your enemies while fighting in combat.

January has April showersLiterary Reference:

Back

To me this is referencing towards the absurdness and chaos politics can bring. By saying that January is having April showers, it represents the quirkiness life brings when things are taken completely out of your own control. This line in the lyrics just really makes me visualize a Dr. Seuss story, and they’re quirky enough as it is. This line really paints a picture in your mind.

It’s the devil's way nowLiterary Reference:

The literary reference to me here, is how the word “devil” is meant to represent a person. Although, it never states that it’s a person that is being referred to, it is basically implied. It also tells you that the “person” in the song they are talking about, is evil, for that’s what comes to mind when you think of the Devil.

Paying attentionLiterary Reference:

Back

The phrase, “paying attention” is said over and over again when the song breaks into a quick paced tempo, it is an example of repetition. I also find it clever and a bit ironic that “paying attention” is played repetitively, especially because when someone isn’t “paying attention” you have to repeat what you say to someone over again.

Here, the artist is referring the bugs to the terrorists. For instance, when it says I swat ‘em, it refers to the first time our nation has dealt with terrorists in the ninety’s. When it states, “the bugs keep coming back”, it represents 9/11 and how the Terrorists came back yet again when they hijacked the planes.

All hail to the thiefHistorical Reference:

Back

When I first read the saying “All hail to the thief” I thought of the President. One, because the Presidents’ theme song is “Hail to the Chief”, and two, because words “All” and “Hail” it makes me think of people being forced to worship one person. This phrase in the song is what I believe represents President George W. Bush. I say this because when the War on Iraq was declared, people had no say in the matter, and they also felt as if they were forced to accept it.

What comes to mind for me when I hear and read this line in the lyrics, is a metaphor. I think this because it isn’t stating that they’re trapped in a physical place, but more of an emotional trapped.

Don't question my authority or put me in the box

Historical Reference:

Back

The phrase, “Don’t question my authority” represents what the public felt the President’s thoughts were on the War. Some felt as if there is no ifs, ands, or buts when it came to the ultimate decision towards the War in Iraq. Citizens also felt as if some of Bush’s judgments were poor and they began to “question his authority”. When the lyrics say “Or put me in a box”, it represents the Government putting they publics’ voiced opinions in a box to be ignored or shipped off.

Oh go and tell the king that the sky is falling in

Historical Reference:

Back

The historical reference in this line of the lyrics is people are going to the President and voicing that the world is coming to an end, just like Government officials wanted them to. However, the lyric following this phrase is “But I’m Not” which tells you that some aren’t going to listen to what they want and show them what they are really thinking and want. Also, when it says, “Oh go and tell the King” it seems like they are saying that our Democratic government almost feels like a monarch.

I try to sing along But I get it all wrong Literary Reference:

Back

The literary reference to me is also a metaphor. For example, when it says, “I try to sing along” I believe that it means and represents people trying to get what someone is saying to them. Just like a person trying to sing along to a tune they don’t know. The next part says, “But I get it all wrong”, to me that means in the literal since that when someone tried to get what someone else is saying, but they couldn’t because they couldn’t see the point in it. The metaphorical since is like not knowing the song, you end up getting the whole thing wrong.
