Hybrid Silage and High Moisture Corn Rating Summary 15
High Moisture Corn (HMC) Management 16-18
CONTENTS
AgriGold understands that corn has many uses and is made for different markets. We realize that corn growers are not only seeking high yielding hybrids and strong agronomics, but hybrids that bring superior feed value as well. That is why we have developed a Silage and High Moisture Corn Book with supporting information, designed to help you plant AgriGold with confidence! As Agronomy Manager, I’m often asked about what we refer to as “The AgriGold Look.” What exactly does that mean? As we approach harvest in the fall, it means a brown husk on a strong green plant, indicating a healthy factory that is still pumping sugar to the ear. The result is maximum yield and better standability, and an agronomic standard that our company takes pride in. We have found that hybrids exhibiting the AgriGold Look tend to make very good silage hybrids as well. This book is intended to help growers understand how our hybrids match up in feed value and to be a learning piece for all. You will notice that we use reputable third party and independent institutions for the majority of our silage testing. This helps us bring consistent unbiased results to the farm. We have introduced several new hybrids in 2018 that were able to enter our testing network. Spend some time reviewing our product and the agronomic information provided, then call your local Corn Specialist at 1-800-262-7333 to see how you can get the AgriGold Look and the best silage hybrid on your farm.

In 2018, independent third-party researchers tested hybrids in the AgriGold lineup for silage yield and quality. Data taken over multiple locations reflects silage characteristics under diverse environmental conditions. Overall averages should be used as a first consideration for picking silage hybrids. Using local results will help narrow the options for the correct silage hybrid.

CORN SILAGE HYBRID SELECTIONSelecting the correct hybrid for silage is one of the most important management decisions for silage programs. The following criteria help growers select the correct hybrids for maximum corn silage production:
• Choose hybrids that are adapted for the region in which they will be grown
• Ensure hybrids will respond positively from the operation’s cultural practices
• Select hybrids that are several days fuller maturity than those adapted for grain production
• Good silage hybrids have a high grain to stover ratio
• Good silage hybrids possess the following traits:- High Forage Yields- High Digestibility- Low Fiber Levels- High Grain Yields
AgriGold is proud to provide this third-party data to help growers make their feed program more successful. Some of the following information can be used to help pick the right corn hybrid for any operation:
• Basic corn silage definitions below
• Local corn silage results on pages 5 to 13
• High Moisture Corn information on pages 16 to 18
Please use multi-location averages and also the data from a few locations nearest to your farm. The charts compare Milk/Ton and Milk/Acre. Hybrids with a high Milk/Ton are hybrids with high silage quality. Hybrids with high Milk/Acre combine high silage quality with high silage yield. Your Corn Specialist can answer any questions you may have about specific hybrids.
CORN SILAGE QUALITY DEFINITIONSCrude Protein (CP): Mixtures of true proteins and non-protein nitrogen. CP is found by determining the amount of total nitrogen and multiplying by 6.25.
Neutral Detergent Fiber (NDF): Composed of the entire cell wall, NDF contains the ADF and hemicellulose. NDF is less digestible than non-fiber plant parts. Higher NDF values lead to reduced feed intake because the animal “fills up” faster. NDF increases as corn matures. Low NDF values are desirable.
Neutral Detergent Fiber Digestibility (NDFD): Measure of the portion of the NDF that is digested at a specific amount of intake. High NDFD is an indicator of high quality corn silage.
Starch: Found mostly in the corn grain, but also is a part of the digestible fraction of NDF. As corn matures, starch concentrations increase. Starch accounts for most of the energy in corn silage.
In Situ Starch (7 hr): Closely related to actual rumen digestion, is precise and demostrates wide ranges in forage and grain starch digestion systems.
Total Tract Neutral Detergent Fiber Digestibility (TTNDFD): It is a direct quantitative predictor of fiber digestion. The in vitro TTNDFD assay predicts NDF digestion of alfalfa, corn silage, grass forages, and byproduct feeds.

MANAGING HIGH MOISTURE CORN
STARCH IN THE CORN KERNEL
The dairy and livestock industries have been using corn to provide energy in the ration for decades. Utilizing High Moisture Corn has become common on many farms. Some factors that can affect digestibility of High Moisture Corn include:
• Harvest moisture• Grinding intensity• Length of storage (fermentation) time before feeding• Addition of inoculants and other additives before ensiling
Getting the most out of your High Moisture Corn can potentially increase production, reduce feed usage, and improve profitability. Differences in genetics and kernel characteristics can make one hybrid a better fit for any unique set of management practices than another.
At AgriGold, we look forward to working with dairy and livestock producers, consultants, nutritionists, and anyone involved in making feed decisions on the farm to increase efficiency and improve the bottom line. Please continue reading to learn more about the makeup of corn kernels and how some AgriGold hybrids might have a fit for the feed management practices on your farm. Contact your Corn Specialist for more information or to set up a meeting with your nutritionist.
Vitreous Endosperm
• Hard, tightly compacted starch• Translucent• Contributes to test weight• Less digestible• Higher in prolamins
Floury Endosperm
• Less dense than vitreous endosperm• Softer starch• More digestible• Less translucent• Lower in prolamins

HIGH MOISTURE CORN MANAGEMENT Hybrids that are characterized by many factors for a low ranking for High Moisture Corn need to be managed to a higher degree for successful use as High Moisture Corn. Hybrids characterized by many factors for a high ranking for High Moisture Corn need less management for successful use as High Moisture Corn.
• Ensiling—The ensiling process has been shown to improve starch degradation by significantly altering the rapid-degradable starch fraction and starch degradation rate (Jurjanz and Monteils, 2005).
• Length of Fermentation—Fermentation of High Moisture Corn appears to be very slow and chemical alterations are occurring over an extended storage period. 0 vs. 240 fermentation days reduced prolamin-zein subunits of the starch-protein matrix from 10-40%. (Hoffman et al., 2010).
• Temperature During Fermentation—Slower growth rates of silage bacteria induced by ensiling dry corn can further be exacerbated by ensiling at low temperatures (Pitt et al., 1985).
• Harvest Moisture—Drier High Moisture Corn ferments slower than wetter High Moisture Corn (Pitt et al., 1985).
