• Broadly two functions are performed in the editorial department of a newspaper

1.Reporting2.Editing

The size of the editorial department depends on:

1.Number of pages a daily carries2.Number of editions published from that

place

• Many big newspapers have now started taking out many editions from different places.

• This is basically done for two reasons:

1.To increase circulation by covering more cities and towns

2.To increase the volume of advertising in extended areas

• The newsroom is where the stories are gathered, written, put together, edited and assembled for the news broadcast, telecast or newspaper

• It is an office at a television or radio station or a newspaper where news is gathered and reports are prepared for broadcasting or publishing

Conventional News Room

• News reports are received in a newspaper through two sources– news agencies and newspaper’s correspondents

• The reporters posted at the newspaper office file their stories after typing them

Modern News Room

• Today, no underground cables are laid between the news agency office and the news room of a newspaper

• Correspondents posted abroad or those in the bureau can send their stories to the news room with the help of the net.

Parameter: A) Receiving News Reports

Conventional News Room

• The teleprinters are installed at the bureaus and other reporting units of the newspaper at outside locations

• Outstation correspondents posted at locations where no teleprinters can send their stories through telegrams.

Modern News Room

• Most newspaper offices have mail facility now a days. However, small cities and stringers might not have the same.

• The offices of the newspaper in small cities and towns can use Fax for sending their reports.

Parameter: A) Receiving News Reports

Conventional News Room

• Hundreds of news stories are received in the newsroom of a newspaper every day.

• The copies are then submitted to chief sub – editor of general desk who arranges them by putting the related issues taken together

Modern News Room

• No collection or compilation of news reports takes place in a modern news room. The required story can be downloaded.

• The chief sub editor can easily monitor and supervise it.

Parameter: B) Selection of News Reports

Conventional News Room

• Selected stories are edited on specific desks by the editorial staff posted there.

• The chief sub editor in charge is very important. He/she is the final authority for the selection and editing of stories.

Modern News Room

• Editing of selected items is done online in a modern newsroom.

• The edited copy is headlined by the sub editor concerned.

Parameter: C) Editing of selected items

Conventional News Room

• The edited stories are sent to the composing room for composing.

• In the proof reading section, the proof – readers read the typed matter on the printout and mark the desirable corrections.

Modern News Room

• No composing of news items takes place in a modern news room as already a soft copy is available.

• Since, no composing is taking place, proof reading becomes out of question.

Parameter: D) Composing and proof reading

Conventional News Room

• The proof read copy is sent back to the composing room/DTP room for corrections.

• Having received all the print outs of the news items scheduled for a page, layout is sent to makeup man who prepares the page.

Modern News Room

• The computer terminals installed in the modern newsroom equipped with DTP softwares help in layout and page making.

• In modern news room there is no room for make-up man as all cutting and pasting takes place on the computer.
