FIRST SUNDAY OF ADVENT

This week we begin a new liturgical year, a new Church year with the 1st Sunday of Advent. We can say that today we wake up to a new Church year. The season of Advent prepares us for Christmas. So, the 1st Sunday of Advent is like the alarm clock ringing. The 4 weeks of Advent to slowly wake us up to Christmas.

These coming weeks we are going to have many things that will demand our attention. From the commercial things, we just started the busiest shopping time of the year, to the family and social functions that we have to attend. It is a busy time and it goes fast. But there is one thing that should be the center of our attention these coming weeks and that is the coming of Jesus on Christmas day. Let’s us reshape our hearts and minds so that we may bring Christ’s peace and joy to our world. Let us live in expectation of doing God’s will and then we will be doing good things.

Congratulations On last Saturday we had a Sacrament of Confirmation service during the Mass in which two of the candidates received the Sacrament from me. They are Amanda and Kate and let us congratulate them for coming forward to accept Jesus and the Holy Spirit in a deeper way. I too thank Alex and Jenny Popov for preparing them.

Volunteers Mass Held A big thanks to the volunteers for coming to the last Sunday’s Mass and to the morning tea thereafter in the parish centre. I thank the PPC social committee members for organizing the cakes and biscuits. First Latin Mass We are happy to inform you that we are going to celebrate our first Latin Mass in our church on Friday 4th of December at 5.00 pm. Come and experience its rich universality. The traditional Latin Mass not only provides a visible and unbroken link from the present day to the distant past, it also constitutes an inspiring bond of unity across the globe.

Christmas Party

We invite you all to our Parish Christmas Party on Friday 11th Dec at 5.30 pm in

Christmas!

Formation to them. The “10 wise maids” are Elma Coverley, Eleonor Della Bosca, Trudy Wilkinson, Lucia Anning-Chan, Cindy Bovell, Mary Mclean, Rosemary Van Schoor, Grace Lazaroo, Beneth Eddison and Cynthia Galindo. They have started serving the weekday masses and they will be officially installed by Fr. Tony Chiera, Vicar General, on 20th December at 9.30 am Mass. Let us wish them every success. Art work from MCC I am happy to state that the Art club of Mandurah Catholic College has gifted to our Parish their beautiful work done by the students of Year 7 to 10. It is a Contour Window painted stained glass on Biblical stories. Congratulations to the junior artists and we thank the MCC team for their generosity for giving us this precious product. Let us find a suitable place to fix this beautiful art work. Have a beautiful weekend! Fr. Johny Arattukulam, O.C.D.

Advent Wreath Ceremony

Sat 6 pm- Eunice Hope Sun 8 am– Sun 9.30 am– Sun 6 pm-

Presider: The Presider blesses the wreath with these words: “May the spring of this water remind all of us gathered here of our first sharing in the grace of baptism. During this time of Advent may we prepare for the Lord’s coming with open hearts and minds. May this wreath be a symbol to us of this time of prayerful watching and waiting for the coming of the Lord, and a symbol of faith in the power of the Holy spirit as we anticipate the fruits of the Plenary Council.

(The parishioners light the first candle) V. Lord Jesus, your coming was proclaimed by the prophets of old. The Prophet Isaiah proclaimed to the people that we are the work of God’s hands’ we are the clay, and he is the potter (First Reading). Mold us in your image as we walk together the pilgrimage of the Plenary Council. Response: Come, Lord Jesus.

V. Lord Jesus, we believe you come among us now. St Paul declares that the Spirit will keep us steady until the last day (Second Reading). May our hearts be centred on listening to the Holy Spirit throughout the Plenary Council journey. Response: Come, Lord Jesus. V. Lord Jesus, you will come again in Glory. You ask us to ‘stay awake!’ (Gospel). May we be awake and ready to hear the movement of the Spirit in the world around us. Response: Come, Lord Jesus.

First Reading

A reading from the prophet Isaiah 63:16–17; 64:1, 3–8

You, Lord, yourself are our Father, Our Redeemer is your ancient name.

Why, Lord, leave us to stray from your ways and harden our hearts against fearing

you? Return, for the sake of your servants, the tribes of your inheritance.

Oh, that you would tear the heavens open and come down

- at your Presence the mountains would melt.

No ear has heard, no eye has seen

any god but you act like this for those who trust him.

You guide those who act with integrity and keep your ways in mind.

You were angry when we were sinners; we had long been rebels against you.

We were all like men unclean, all that integrity of ours is like filthy clothing.

We have all withered like leaves and our sins blew us away like the wind.

No one invoked your name or roused himself to catch hold of you.

For you hid your face from us and gave us up to the power of our sins.

And yet, Lord, you are our Father; we the clay, you the potter,

we are all the work of your hand.

The word of the Lord

Thanks be to God.

RESPONSORIAL PSALM

R. Lord, make us turn to you, let us see your face

and we shall be saved.

O shepherd of Israel, hear us,

shine forth from your cherubim throne.

O Lord, rouse up your might,

O Lord, come to our help. R.

God of hosts, turn again, we implore,

look down from heaven and see,

Visit this vine and protect it,

the vine your right hand has planted. R.

May your hand be on the man you have chosen,

the man you have given your strength.

And we shall never forsake you again:

give us life that we may call upon your name. R.

SECOND Reading

A reading from the first letter of St Paul to the Corinthians 1:3–9 May God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ send you grace and peace. I never stop thanking God for all the graces you have received through Jesus Christ. I thank him that you have been enriched in so many ways, especially in your teachers and preachers; the witness to Christ has indeed been strong among you so that you will not be without any of the gifts of the Spirit while you are waiting for our Lord Jesus Christ to be revealed; and he will keep you steady and without blame until the last day, the day of our Lord Jesus Christ, because God by calling you has joined you to his Son, Jesus Christ; and God is faithful. The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

Gospel acclamation

Alleluia, alleluia! Lord, show us your mercy and love, and grant us your salvation.

Alleluia!

GOSPEL

A reading from the holy Gospel according to Mark 13:33–37

Jesus said to his disciples: 'Be on your guard, stay awake, because you never know

when the time will come. It is like a man travelling abroad: he has gone from home,

and left his servants in charge, each with his own task; and he has told the

doorkeeper to stay awake. So stay awake, because you do

not know when the master of the house is coming, evening,

midnight, cockcrow, dawn; if he comes unexpectedly, he

must not find you asleep. And what I say to you I say to all:

Stay awake!'

Gospel of the Lord.

Praise to you Lord Jesus Christ.

Vinnies Christmas Appeal Mandurah Conference

Vinnies is taking pressure off families by providing food, emotional support, and paying for some of the essentials. Help us help support families in Mandurah and Dawesville at breaking point this Christmas.

The unprecedented number of job losses, the reduction in Job Seeker support, and the looming end to the moratorium on evictions, plus an economy in recession for the first time in decades all point to some difficult times ahead. We expect more people than ever will turn to Vinnies to help get them through this difficult period. This year our Mandurah Support Centre has used $168,000 to help 2450 people – 38% were helped for the first time. You can help us financially, and with food.

Barry Vanderputt My name is Barry. As I am fairly new to the Parish, Father Johny has asked me to provide some brief background details for the Parish bulletin.

I was born in Calcutta India in 1959. I was five when my family – Mum Dad & four boys immigrated to Australia in 1964. We arrived in Manly, NSW which was a significant change in lifestyle coming from the hustle & bustle of Calcutta & Delhi. After 5 years in NSW, dad’s work saw the family move to Western Australia.

I met my wife Debbie as a teenager. We have been happily married for 40 years & have been blessed with two sons who are now in their mid 30’s.

My first & only job was with Bankwest. I worked in a number of different roles from teller, Sales Manager to Business Credit Manager. After 39 fulfilling years with Bankwest, I retired in 2015.

I have been involved with hockey over many years. As a junior, I represented WA & captained the State under 16’s. I played & coached hockey for many years & only stopped playing 6 years ago. In 2006 I got together with a few hockey friends & started a new club - Southern River Hockey Club. Starting a club from scratch was challenging but extremely satisfying. The Club flourished with 18 teams established in a short period of time. I had roles as Club Treasurer, Bar Manager & coach of the top side as well as playing veterans hockey.

Prior to moving to Mandurah in 2019, I was a parishioner for many years at the Sacred Heart Parish in Thornlie. My children went to the Catholic school established alongside the Church. I was on the Parish Finance Committee for many years & worked closely with the Parish priest to assist with maintenance & upgrade requirements for the Church, Admin Centre & Presbytery. For the bulk of the past 15 years I prepared & presented the Finance Committee reports for the Parish Annual General Meetings.

I now look forward to being part of & contributing to Our Lady’s Assumption Catholic Parish Mandurah. Thank you Father Johny & Father Anson for making me feel so welcome.—Barry Vanderputt

St. Andrew- November 30 According to the New Testament, Andrew was born in the village of Bethsaida on the Sea of Galilee during the early first century. Much like his younger brother, Simon Peter, Andrew was also a fisherman. Andrew's very name means strong and he was known for having good social skills. In the Gospel of Matthew, it is said Jesus was walking along the shore of the Sea of Galilee and saw Andrew and Simon Peter fishing. It is then he asked the two to become his disciples and "fishers of men. John the Evangelist presents Andrew as a disciple of John the Baptist. When Jesus walked by one

day, John said, “Behold, the Lamb of God.” Andrew and another disciple then followed Jesus. Little else is said about Andrew in the Gospels. Before the multiplication of the loaves, it was Andrew who spoke up about the boy who had the barley loaves and fishes. When the Gentiles went to see Jesus, they came to Philip, but Philip then had recourse to Andrew.

Legend has it that Andrew preached the Good News in what is now modern Greece and Turkey and was crucified at Patras on an X-shaped cross.

St. Francis Xavier – December 3 Francis Xavier was born during 1506 in the Kingdom of Navarre, a region now divided between Spain and France. His mother was an esteemed heiress, and his father an adviser to King John III. While his brothers entered the military, Francis followed an intellectual path to a college in Paris. There he studied philosophy, and later taught it after earning his master’s degree.

In Paris, the young man would discover his destiny with the help of his long-time friend Peter Faber, and an older student named Ignatius Loyola – who came to Paris in 1528 to finish a degree, and brought together a group of men looking to glorify God with their lives. At first, personal ambition kept Francis from heeding God's call. Ignatius' humble and austere lifestyle did not appeal to him. But Ignatius, who had undergone a dramatic conversion, often posed Christ's question to Francis: “What will it profit a man to gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?”

Gradually, Ignatius convinced the young man to give up his own plans and open his mind to God's will. In 1534, Francis Xavier, Peter Faber, and four other men joined Ignatius in making a vow of poverty, chastity, and dedication to the spread of the Gospel through personal obedience to the Pope. After he was ordained a priest in 1537, Xavier went on to Lisbon and from there sailed to the East Indies, landing at Goa, on the west coast of India. For the next 10 years he laboured to bring the faith to such widely scattered peoples as the Hindus, the Malayans, and the Japanese. He spent much of that time in India, and served as provincial of the newly established Jesuit province of India.

Francis Xavier became ill and died on Dec. 3, 1552, while seeking a way to enter the closely-guarded kingdom of China. In 1622, both St. Francis Xavier and St. Ignatius Loyola were canonized on the same day. Source: https://www.catholiconline.org & francisanmedia.org.
