On October 7, 2016 our Maronite eparchy (diocese) will celebrate the 50 year anniversary of a Maronite bishop in the United States. There will be a banquet held 8:00pm at the Brooklyn Marriot Hotel. With this upcoming celebration,

it is a good time for the deacon desk to review what is a bishop. The Catechism of the Catholic Church (CCC) tells us: “"In order that the mission entrusted to them might be continued after their death, [the apostles] consigned, by will and testament, as it were, to their immediate collaborators the duty of completing and consolidating the work they had begun, urging them to tend to the whole flock, in which the Holy Spirit had appointed them to shepherd the Church of God. They accordingly designated such men and then made the ruling that likewise on their death other proven men should take over their ministry." "Just as the office which the Lord confided to Peter alone, as first of the apostles, destined to be transmitted to his successors, is a permanent one, so also endures the office, which the apostles received, of shepherding the Church, a charge destined to be exercised without interruption by the sacred order of bishops. Hence the Church teaches that the bishops have by divine institution taken the place of the apostles as pastors of the Church, in such wise that whoever listens to them is listening to Christ and whoever despises them despises Christ and him who sent Christ." (CCC: 861, 862) Amongst those various offices which have been exercised in the Church from the earliest times the chief place, according to the witness of tradition, is held by the function of those who, through their appointment to the dignity and responsibility of bishop, and in virtue consequently of the unbroken succession going back to the beginning, are regarded as transmitters of the apostolic line. “To fulfill their exalted mission, the apostles were endowed by Christ with a special outpouring of the Holy Spirit coming upon them, and by the imposition of hands they passed on to their auxiliaries the gift of the Spirit, which is transmitted down to our day through episcopal (bishop’s) consecration." (CCC: 1556) Episcopal consecration confers, together with the office of sanctifying, also the offices of teaching and ruling. In fact by the imposition of hands and through the words of the consecration, the grace of the Holy Spirit is given, and a sacred character is impressed in such wise that bishops, in an eminent and visible manner, take the place of Christ himself, teacher, shepherd, and priest, and act as his representative. By virtue, therefore, of the Holy Spirit who has been given to them, bishops have been constituted true and authentic teachers of the faith and have been made pontiffs and pastors. As Christ's vicar, each bishop has the pastoral care of the particular Church (diocese/eparchy) entrusted to him, but at the same time he bears collegially with all

A Christian Steward is defined as “One who receives God’s gifts gratefully, cherishes and tends them in

a responsible and accountable manner, shares them in justice and love with

others and returns them with increase to the Lord.”

“Christianity does not exist without the Cross. The cross is not an ornament to place on the altar but is the mystery of God’s love who takes our sins upon Himself.” Pope Francis

God Bless You, Deacon Jack

cont'd from p.2his brothers in the episcopacy the solicitude for all the Churches: Though each bishop is the lawful pastor only of the portion of the flock entrusted to his care, as a legitimate successor of the apostles he is, by divine institution and precept, responsible with the other bishops for the apostolic mission of the Church. Because of the responsibilities given to a bishop, the church recognizes the importance of especially praying for bishops. In our Maronite deaconate proclamations for intentions, you will notice that there is usually a prayer for our bishops. We should always remember our clergy in our prayers, especially for our bishops.

2 Timothy 2:1-10 So you, my child, be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus. And what you heard from me through many witnesses entrust to faithful people who will have the ability to teach others as well. Bear your share of hardship along with me like a good soldier of Christ Jesus. To satisfy the one who recruited him, a soldier does not become entangled in the busi-ness affairs of life. Similarly, an athlete cannot receive the winner’s crown except by competing according to the rules. The hardworking farmer ought to have the first share of the crop. Reflect

on what I am saying, for the Lord will give you understanding in everything. Remember Jesus Christ, raised from the dead, a descendant of David: such is my gospel, for which I am suffering, even to the point of chains, like a criminal. But the word of God is not chained. Therefore, I bear with everything for the sake of those who are cho-sen, so that they too may obtain the salvation that is in Christ Jesus, together with eternal glory. Mark 10:35-45 Then James and John, the sons of Zebedee, came to him and said to him, “Teacher, we want you to do for us whatever we ask of you.” He replied, “What do you wish (me) to do for you?” They answered him, “Grant that in your glory we may sit one at your right and the other at your left.” Jesus said to them, “You do not know what you are asking. Can you drink the cup that I drink or be bap-tized with the baptism with which I am baptized?” They said to him, “We can.” Jesus said to them, “The cup that I drink, you will drink, and with the baptism with which I am baptized, you will be baptized; but to sit at my right or at my left is not mine to give but is for those for whom it has been prepared.” When the ten heard this, they became indignant at James and John. Jesus summoned them and said to them, “You know that those who are recognized as rulers over the Gentiles lord it over them, and their great ones make their authority over them felt. But it shall not be so among you. Rather, whoever wishes to be great among you will be your servant; whoever wishes to be first among you will be the slave of all. For the Son of Man did not come to be served but to serve and to give his life as a ransom for many.”

from Bishop Gregory: Fifty years ago Bishop Francis M. Zayek was assigned as the first Maronite bishop for the United States. With his persistent love, his broad and vibrant vision of the Church, he was slowly able to gain the hearts and minds of God's people, and as they say, the rest is history. We now have two eparchies, over 86 parishes and a vibrant Church. On October 7, 2016, we hope to celebrate 50 years and consecrate ourselves in

order to continue this noble mission. If you able to be with us on that day, please be with us in prayer and support. Tickets are $150/per person. Click on namnews.org to reserve your seat. All paid reservations should be received no later than October 3. There is a program book commemorating business advertisement, personal messages, and tributes for loved ones. Half of the proceeds go directly to NAM (National Apostale of Maronites). Ads start at $100. Click on namnews.org to reserve an ad.

began on December 8, 2015 (the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary) and will conclude on November 20, 2016 (the Solemnity of Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe). How can we show others the

mercy of God? Our actions need to authentically reflect God's mercy.

We can look to the Corporal Works of Mercy:
