SPARKLING DERBY SALE SAW RECORDS TUMBLEA sparkling edition of the Tattersalls Ireland Derby Sale concluded last night by making notable across the board gains, which saw records fall by the wayside at the premier National Hunt store sale.

At the head of the market prices could not quite match Wednesday’s opening session, but a total of 17 six-figure transactions yesterday, headed by the sale of a €145,000 Milan gelding from Kitty Cowhey’s Loughmore Stables, laid the foundations for a landmark set of results for the auction.

At the close of proceedings last night the Derby Sale produced an aggregate of over €17.6m, which was a 24 per cent improvement on 2016. For the first time in the sale’s history the average broke through €50,000 to come in at €51,654 (+9%), while the median jumped from €36,000 to €42,500, which represented a record by some distance.

The first two major store sales of the summer pointed to a strong edition of the Derby Sale and the flagship store auction more than delivered on expectations. While there may have been

a feeling that activity in the six-figure bracket would drive the growth at this year’s sale, it was instead the middle market where the notable gains took place.

November remains some way off, but the events of the last few days and indeed those of recent weeks bode well for when the all encompassing November National Hunt Sale gets underway in just over four month’s time.

At the 2013 November National Hunt Sale the Gr.1 and Gr.3-placed mare Belle Brook fetched €85,000 and yesterday the Alderbrook mare was represented by her first produce, an excellent son of Milan (Lot 318), who emerged as the day’s session topper at €145,000.

The Highflyer Bloodstock team, who have been exceptionally busy on behalf of a host of UK-based clients over the last couple of days, struck for two of the nicest geldings on offer.

The second of these to come under the hammer was an excellent son of Oscar from Michael Fitzpatrick’s Kilminfoyle House Stud, who cost €125,000, which represented quite a return on the €24,000 he made as a foal. Lot 307 is out of an unraced Bob Back mare and his family goes back to the brilliant Gr.1-winning chaser Strong Promise (Strong Gale).

“He’s been bought for Trevor Hemmings and he’s a particularly nice horse. In fact he’s the best Oscar that I’ve seen here this week,” remarked David Minton.

Earlier Minton also had to go to €125,000 for a Presenting gelding (Lot 233), whom Peter Nolan consigned on behalf of Slaney River Stud. The April-born gelding, whose dam is the Gr.3-winning Supreme Serenade (Supreme Leader), did not sell as a foal but rewarded the faith of his connections on his return to the sales ring.

“He’s been bought for Trevor as well. He’s a typical Presenting, a very good-looking horse, and he’s out of a very smart racemare too. Happily he was in early and we were able to buy him,” declared Minton.

A feature of the store sales so far this year has been the popularity of the first crop sired by the late Fame And Glory (Montjeu) and the former multiple Gr.1 scorer was ably represented by an excellent gelding from Ken Parkhill’s Castletown Quarry Stud who came to M V Magnier for €125,0000. Lot 263 is a half-brother to four winners produced by the Un Desperado mare Victorine, who is a half-sister to the Champion

Limerick-based purchaser Bryan Murphy signed for the gelding and the grandson of Sadler’s Wells represented a current and highly successful National Hunt family. Belle Brook is out of a half-sister to the multiple Gr.1 scorer Boston Bob (Bob Back), while this is also the family of the former Gr.1 Cheltenham Bumper hero Briar Hill (Shantou).

“He’s a lovely horse with a fabulous page and he’ll come back to us now. You’d be looking at a bumper in the spring with him,” reported Murphy.

Hurdle-winning siblings Morley Street and Granville Again (both by Deep Run).

Magnier also weighed in for a €100,000 son of Dylan Thomas, who had been picked up for €23,000 as a foal at the November National Hunt Sale. In the meantime the Lakefield Farm offering (Lot 383) enjoyed a nice update to his pedigree as his half-brother Gunnery Sergeant (Presenting) has won twice, as well as being placed at Gr.1 level.

Another €125,000 son of Fame And Glory came in the shape of (Lot 373), a fine gelding from Mount Eaton Stud, who fell to the busy Gordon Elliott. The leading trainer’s purchase, who was showing a good return on the €33,000 he cost as a foal, is a half-brother to a dual winner in Cloudy Rock (Cloudings). Perhaps more significantly this relation to the Gr.1 Irish Grand National hero Shutthefrontdoor (Accordion) is a half-brother to Cool Getaway (Getaway), who fetched £305,000 at a sale in December, following his debut success in a point-to-point the previous month.

“He’s just a very good-looking horse and I’ve been impressed with the Fame And Glory’s that I’ve seen so far. He’s from a nice family and the half-brother Cool Getaway is promising. He looked very good when he won his point last November,” reported Elliott.

Aiden Murphy’s biggest purchase of the day came when he splashed out €115,000 for (Lot 273), a son of Milan hailing from the excellent Cork-based nursery of Ballincurrig House Stud. The €31,000 foal purchase is a half-brother to the Gr.2-placed chaser Cogry (King’s Theatre) and they are out of the dual Listed-placed Wyldello (Supreme Leader).

Murphy later went to €110,000 for a Fame And Glory gelding (Lot 429), out of an unraced half-sister to the multiple Gr.2 scorer Emotional Moment (Religiously). He was sold by Baroda and Colbinstown Studs.

Also coming in at €115,000 was a Flemensfirth gelding offered by Ciaran Conroy’s Glenvale Stud. Gearoid Costello saw off all challengers for the full-brother to the Gr.2-placed On Raglan Road, whose career began with an impressive Punchestown Festival bumper triumph over the top-class Dunguib (Presenting).

Joseph O’Brien, who will bid for further Gr.1 glory with Intricately at the Curragh this weekend, parted with €110,000 for a son of Kayf Tara from Mill House Stud. This gelding (Lot 367) is a half-brother to the Gr.2-placed Meet The Legend (Midnight Legend) and an unraced Midnight Legend four-year-old who fetched €100,000 at this sale last year.

“He’s a very nice sort and a very good mover and the mare has

already produced a couple of useful types, which is always good to see. He’s been bought for a client of the yard,” reported O’Brien.

The prolific agent Tom Malone, who forked out €220,000 for a son of Kapgarde on Wednesday, was again to the fore and he struck early for a pair of six-figure lots. The first of these was a €105,000 Martaline gelding (Lot 241) hailing from the Goldford Stud draft. The half-brother to three winners was showing a decent return on the €45,000 he cost in this ring as a foal.

A short while later Malone secured (Lot 259), a good son of Saint Des Saints from Peter Vaughan’s Moanmore Stables, with one bid of €100,000. This good-looking bay is a full-brother to the

They are two lovely horses from nice pedigrees and I thought given the market we are in that they represented a bit of value,” remarked Malone.

As the sale came to a close a fine three-year-old from the first crop of the Monsun horse Aizavoski (Lot 455) caught the attention of Ryan Mahon, who secured him with a bid of €110,000. The Glenvale Stud offering, a €17,500 foal purchase, is a half-brother to the useful bumper winner Hardline (Arcadio) and comes from a family littered with high-class jumpers.

Earlier Mahon forked out €100,000 for a Stowaway gelding (Lot 393), hailing from Roxborough Stud. The €23,000 foal is the third produce of a Witness Box half-sister to Denman (Presenting), who won the Gr.1 Cheltenham Gold Cup and took second in the race on three occasions.

Elsewhere Jessica Harrington, who has already enjoyed such a memorable year over jumps and with her powerful Flat team, was busy stockpiling future talent. The Gold Cup-winning trainer’s spending was headed by a €100,000 son of Stowaway, who also formed part of the draft from Peter Nolan Bloodstock. Lot 294 is the third produce out of a full-sister to the outstanding chaser and Gr.1 Cheltenham Gold Cup hero Kicking King (Old Vic). The second dam, Fairy Blaze (Good Thyne), has produced three other Graded-placed runners.

The €100,000 mark was also reached by Tom O’Mahony when he secured an especially good-walking son of Gold Well from Ballincurrig House Stud. Lot 425 is the first produce of an unraced full-sister to the multiple Gr.1 winner and top-class chaser First Lieutenant (Presenting).

Gr.2 Prix Congress Chase hero Saint Macaire, while he is a half-brother to the Gr.3 winner and Gr.1-placed juvenile hurdler Sleeping Mat (Sleeping Car).

“They’ve both been bought to head to Ditcheat for Paul Nicholls.

GROUP COMPANY NEXT ASSIGNMENT FOR ATTY PERSSERoger Charlton’s King George V Stakes winner Atty Persse (Frankel) is expected to take a step up to Group company on his next start according to his son and assistant Harry, who said, “I think we’re looking at the Bahrain Trophy, which is a one-mile-five [furlong] Gr.3 at the July meeting.

“Godolphin have a few others in there. I think Secret Advisor [Dubawi – Gr.2 Queen’s Vase-third] might be heading that way as well, but that’s the plan we had for him. If he’s a [Gr.1] St Leger horse he needs to be winning that type of race or something like the [Gr.3] Gordon Stakes [over twelve furlongs] at Goodwood.”

FRANCE

AUTUMN PLAN FOR DIANE-THIRD TERRAKOVAGoldikova’s three-year-old daughter Terrakova, who lost her unbeaten record when third, filling the same position as her dam, in the Gr.1 Prix de Diane, is set to be rested over the summer and will be given an autumn campaign.

The daughter of Galileo, who won her maiden on the all-weather at Chantilly last November, made her seasonal reappearance a successful one, when taking the Gr.3 Prix Cleopatre at Saint-Cloud last month.

“She’s very well. I’m very happy with her and she looks great. Now we will look to the autumn,” trainer Freddy Head said. “She will have a break now and we’re going to go for the [Gr.1] Prix Vermeille. We’ll give her an entry for that. I think she will stay the mile and a half. The way she ran last time showed she could stay.”

AUSTRALIA

FOUR-WEEK SUSPENSION FOR MICHELLE PAYNERacing Victoria has handed out a four-week riding suspension to Michelle Payne, following a positive test for a banned substance. The Gr.1 Melbourne Cup-winning jockey will, however, be free to ride in August’s Shergar Cup Meeting, as the suspension, imposed on 23rd June, expires on 21st July.

Payne was found guilty by stewards at a Racing Victoria hearing of having traces of Phentermine, a prohibited appetite suppressant, in her system when she delivered a urine sample at a meeting at Swan Hill racecourse on 11th June.

Payne said in a statement: “I would like to make it clear that I take full responsibility for what has happened. The onus is 100 per cent

with me as a rider to know what I am taking and the rules around it – regardless of whether it has been prescribed to me or not.”

Stewards at the Racing Victoria inquiry heard that Payne was prescribed the drug to help “treat gastrointestinal symptoms” after she suffered a bad fall in May 2016 which required pancreatic surgery.

GERMAN THOROUGHBRED NEWS

PRESENTED BY

THIS WEEK’S HEADLINES

KLUG TO SADDLE SEVEN IN GERMAN DERBYIt is Derby time again. Due to the upcoming G20-summit at Hamburg, which brings with it plenty of security restrictions to the city, the Renn-Club has decided to change the format of Derby week, moving the main event to the first Sunday in July. The Gr.1 race over the Classic mile and a half distance carries a prize-pot of €650,000, the most valuable in German racing. There will be 19 runners, just one short of the maximum. More than a third of the field will come from reigning Champion Trainer Markus Klug’s yard. He saddles seven runners, a new Derby record as Andreas Schutz and Peter Schiergen “only” saddled half a dozen.

“I’m pessimistic, I always am,” Klug said when asked about his chances of taking his second Gr.1 Deutsches Derby in four years, following Gestut Gorlsdorf’s Sea The Moon’s (Sea The Stars) triumph in 2014. “Last year I had seven in the Gr.1 Preis der Diana and the best was fourth.” This Sunday however Klug is saddling the favourite, the winner of the Gr.2 Union-Rennen, Colomano (Cacique). The colt will be ridden by Andreas Helfenbein, who rode him at Cologne, after Adrie de Vries was ruled out due to injury.

FIRST ROTTGEN DERBY IN ALMOST 60 YEARSGestut Rottgen, Klug’s employer, is hoping for its first Derby win in almost 60 years. The homebred Windstoss, an offspring of Derby winner Shirocco (Monsun) and Wellenspiel (Sternkoenig), was a strong runner-up in the Union ahead of his stablemate North Sea Star (Sea The Stars), who was bred by Gestut Wittekindshof. “I always had a soft spot for Ming Jung,” Klug said about another of his candidates, but the son of Kallisto (Sternkoenig) has not shown that he really belongs in this class thus far. Last time out he finished fourth in the Gr.3 Ittlingen Derby Trial at Baden-Baden.

That race was won by Langtang (Campanologist), who won the Gr.3 Preis des Winterfavoriten last season as well. However, Andreas Wohler’s first jockey, Eduardo Pedroza, has decided to go with Warring States (Victoire Pisa). He has left Langtang to Jozef Bojko, who won the Derby in 2011 with Waldpark (Dubawi), ahead of Earl Of Tinsdal (Black Sam Bellamy) ridden by Pedroza.

DARIUS RACING HAS TWO CANDIDATES The colours of last year’s winner Isfahan (Lord Of England), owned by Darius Racing, will be carried by the Waldemar Hickst-trained Parviz (Lope De Vega), who won the Listed Derby Trial at Hannover. As will the rank outsider Khan (Santiago), trained by Henk Grewe. Five-time Derby Champion Peter Schiergen saddles Enjoy Vijay (Nathaniel) and Rosenpurpur (Pour Moi), but a win would be even more surprising than a triumph for Sargas (Shirocco) or Monreal (Peintre Celebre) trained by Jean-Pierre Carvalho.

The Derby meeting kicks off today with the Gr.3 Grosser Preis von Lotto for three-year-old fillies. Klug has Gestut Rottgen’s Well Spoken (Soldier Hollow) and Alicante (Lando) as the main contenders. On Saturday the Gr.2 Grosser Hansa-Preis sees a renewed duel between Guignol (Cape Cross) and “Horse of the Year” Iquitos (Adlerflug). There will also be Group races on Monday, Tuesday and on the closing Wednesday at Hamburg next week.

WILD CHIEF BACK TO HIS BESTThe Gr.3 Grosser Preis der Wirtschaft at Dortmund was the only Stakes race in Germany last weekend. For the first time the Classic generation clashed with older horses at such a level. The supplemented Daring Lips (Footstepsinthesand), winner of the Gr.3 Dr. Busch Memorial, could only manage fourth, despite receiving plenty of weight from the field. There were more disappointments. Palace Prince (Areion), a fresh Gr.2 winner at Baden-Baden, ended up in seventh, the normally ultra-consistent Wonnemond (Areion) finished in sixth and last year’s Derby favourite Boscaccio (Mount Nelson) could not improve on his recent win. He finished second-last, beaten eleven lengths by Wild Chief (Doyen), who beat Cashman (Soldier Of Fortune) and Noor Al Hawa (Makfi), both trained by Andreas Wohler.

For the six-year-old son of Wild Angel (Acatenango), bred by Werner Hacker, it was a welcome return to his best form. “There never has been any doubt about his class,” his trainer Jens Hirschberger said. “Last year Wild Chief had a number of minor problems and they are gone now.” It was his first Group win since taking a Gr.2 over the mile at Hannover in 2015. He was fourth in the Gr.1 Prix du Jockey Club in 2014 and third in the Gr.1 Prix Jacques le Marois in 2015. He is owned by Stall Furstenhof and started the season with a win in the Listed Preis von Dahlwitz over ten furlongs. “The Gr.1 Dallmayr-Preis in Munich is now our goal,” Hirschberger says full of confidence. THIS WEEK’S HEADLINES

FIVE REPRESENTATIVES FOR SILVANO IN JULYIt is all about one race in South Africa this weekend, the Gr.1 Durban July at Greyville. The eleven-furlong contest is a race of great tradition and a proud history that has created some of the immortal legends of the South African turf. The honours roll includes the revered names Sea Cottage, Mazarin, Politician, Flaming Rock and London News, while the new Millenium has seen the likes of Dynasty, Ipi Tombe, Pocket Power and Igugu land the country’s premier race.

According to bookmakers, this year’s renewal promises an epic clash between crackerjack three-year-olds Edict Of Nantes (Count Dubois) and Al Sahem (Silvano). On best form there is little to separate them, as was evident in last month’s Gr.1 Daily News 2000. The former’s ability to quicken won him the race, but over the extra furlong, the latter could well turn the tables. Be that as it may, the pair will not have it all their own way, not with the likes of Champion Marinaresco (Silvano), last year’s winner The Conglomerate (Lonhro), dual Summer Cup hero Master Sabina (Jet Master) and impressive Gr.2 Betting World 1900 winner Ten Gun Salute (Henrythenavigator) opposing.

It would be remiss not to mention that Al Sahem and Marinaresco are amongst a record five runners representing Maine Chance standout Silvano. Who can forget the super stallion’s unique feat of two years ago, when he sired the July trifecta with the Maine Chance-bred trio of Power King, Punta Arenas and Tellina?

A sumptuous twelve-race smorgasbord of thoroughbred racing/razzamatazz, the July meeting also includes the Gr.1 Garden Province Stakes (one of no less than six supporting Stakes races), as well as a R1 million bonus race for graduates of the 2016 KwaZulu-Natal Yearling Sale.

Contested over a mile, the Garden Province promises to be a

vintage renewal, with Dynasty’s top-rated daughters Bela-Bela and Just Sensual clashing for the first time. The former, last season’s Champion Three-Year-Old Filly, won the Gr.1 Paddock Stakes earlier this year and most recently finished third against males in the Gr.1 Gold Challenge. The year-younger Just Sensual, a Classic winner of the Gr.1 Cape Fillies Guineas, is equally adept over shorter, as she proved when second to sprint queen Carry On Alice (Captain Al) in the Gr.1 SA Fillies Sprint, before her bold victory in the seven-furlong Gr.2 Tibouchina Stakes. While a Dynasty one-two would not be out of place, Bela-Bela’s stable companion Gimme Six (Gimmethegreenlight) cannot be ignored. A classy winner of the Gr.2 SA Fillies Guineas, she was an unlucky head second in the Gr.1 Woolavington 2000 last time out.

AFRICAN NIGHT SKY WRAPS UP WINTER SERIESDynasty three-year-old African Night Sky stepped into the history books as only the second winner of the Winter Series when he pulverised his field in the Gr.3 Winter Derby at Kenilworth.

Successful in both the Gr.3 Winter Guineas and Gr.3 Winter Derby, Justin Snaith’s charge accelerated from third last at the top of the straight to take the lead approaching the final furlong. Once in the clear, he turned the race into a procession and drew further and further away to win by daylight, the official margin of five and a half lengths flattering the runner-up Paddington (Elusive Fort).

Fred Crabbia’s three-year-old finds himself in exalted company, as only the mighty Pocket Power (Jet Master) managed the same feat and that was exactly ten years ago. Remarkably, both were partnered by Bernard Fayd’Herbe.

This fifth career success pushed African Night Sky’s career earnings to R581,900 and on top of the winning stake, he also collected a handsome bonus of R250,000.

A product of the famed Highlands paddocks, the gelding is one of 42 Stakes winners sired by resident standout Dynasty. His dam, the American import Starzene (Cozzene), proved a stayer of note, winning the Java Handicap and finishing second in both the Gr.2 Gold Bowl and Listed Aquanaut Handicap.

sickness (AHS), a potentially deadly horse disease. Previously, results for the test for this disease took a minimum of two weeks. Thanks to a test developed in South Africa by Professor Alan Guthrie, and colleagues at the Faculty of Veterinary Science’s Equine Research Centre (ERC), University of Pretoria, the test now only takes four hours.

Guthrie explains: “Diagnostic testing for animal diseases is one of the cornerstones of international trade. Because we can now determine the AHS status of a horse in hours, it can reduce the time our horses spend in pre-export quarantine.”

One hundred and eighty one World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) member countries voted on the adoption of international standards in the field of animal health, especially relating to international trade, at the OIE General Assembly in Paris recently.

The Guthrie RT-PCR Test is now officially validated by the OIE for certification of individual animals prior to movement. It has greatly improved the laboratory diagnosis of AHS by increasing the sensitivity of detection and shortening the time required for the diagnosis.

Prof Ian Sanne of the Wits Health Consortium Equine Health Fund commented: “This is an incredible achievement from a local research facility with minimal financial support. AHS has affected South African horse exports since the 1960s and key stakeholders in the industry have been working to find long term solutions to these challenges. This test will support the safe, direct exports of horses from South Africa.”

BSA SALES DATESBloodstock South Africa will kick off its 2018 sales programme on 25th February with the Cape Yearling Sale, which will be held over one session at the Mistico Equestrian Complex.

The time-honoured National Yearling Sale, the source of the most recent Horse of the Year recipients Legislate, Futura and Legal Eagle, will take place over three days, on 24th, 25th and 26th April at the TBA’s sales complex in Johannesburg.

The KwaZulu-Natal Yearling has become increasingly popular with buyers and sellers alike, not least because of the beautiful winter weather expected in Durban, but also as it falls in the same week as the Durban July. The two-day sale is scheduled for 5th and 6th July.

The action then returns to Johannesburg when buyers will have one more opportunity to purchase youngsters from the 2016 crop at the National 2YO Sale, which is scheduled to take place on 15th, 16th and 17th August.

SOUTH AFRICAN TRIO TRIUMPH AT SHA TINSouth African-bred Horse Of Fortune [pictured above] claimed a second Gr.3 victory at Sha Tin this past weekend when he fought his way to a thrilling win in the nine-furlong Premier Plate Handicap.

The result proved to be an all-South African affair, as the six-year-old was partnered by young South African rider Callan Murray for ex-pat Tony Millard. The son of former Summerhill-based Stronghold found a timely split up the inside and edged ahead with 100m remaining to draw away for a length and a quarter verdict.

“He was really tough in the running,” said Murray, who now numbers two Gr.3 scores among his four Hong Kong wins.

Millard was delighted. The South African handler sourced the Stronghold gelding in his homeland as a Listed winner of three races when he raced under the name of Strongman. He now has six Hong Kong wins on the board and two in this Grade, having won the Ladies’ Purse Handicap over the course and distance in November.

“He’s a fantastic horse, he cost next to nothing and he’s done a great job,” Millard said. “He won the Ladies’ Purse this season and now he’s won this. He was a fairly ordinary horse in South Africa – he was around about the Group races, but he wasn’t quite there and I think if anything he’s improved in Hong Kong.“

Bred by Robin Bruss’ Northfields Stud, he is out of triple Gr.3 winner Sweet Virginia (Casey Tibbs), who defeated the boys in both the Winter Derby and Classic. In addition to Horse Of Fortune, she is also the dam of Gr.3 Winter Guineas-third Vilakazi (Visionaire).

Bred by Mrs Elizabeth Grundy, out of British-bred broodmare Persario (Bishop Of Cashel), The Tin Man is now comfortably the highest achieving progeny of Newsells Park’s other stallion, Equiano, with an official rating of 117 and earnings of more than £860,000. Indeed, June proved a particularly fruitful month for the Hertfordshire-based stud, with progeny of Nathaniel and Equiano both registering prestigious Gr.1 successes.

The Tin Man is also a Tattersalls graduate, having been sold at Book 1 of the October Yearling Sale 2013 for 80,000gns.

Premier Yearling Sale going great gunsGoffs UK’s Premier Yearling Sale also enjoyed a successful Royal Ascot, with Barney Roy providing the most significant win when turning the tables on multiple Gr.1 winner Churchill to take the Gr.1 St James’s Palace Stakes on the opening day of the Royal meeting. The Richard Hannon-trained colt was sold for £70,000 at the 2015 renewal of the sale.

Other victories for the Doncaster sales house were delivered by 2yos Rajasinghe in the Gr.2 Coventry Stakes and Different League in the Gr.3 Albany Stakes. The latter went unsold last August due to a minor problem, but now has the Gr.1 Prix Morny in her sights.

British-breds set for Curragh showdownThe Irish Derby meeting at the Curragh this weekend will see Newsells Park bidding for a third top level success in a month when Waldgeist lines up against a field that also includes Newmarket’s Hascombe & Valiant Studs homebred, Cracksman.

Newsells Park’s Julian Dollar commented: “[Waldgeist] was born in Britain, as was his dam… He looks like an exciting horse and we’re all hoping he runs well. [Waldlerche] has a yearling colt by Sea The Stars, who will go to Book 1 of the Tattersalls October Sales. She has a colt foal by Kingman and is in foal to Galileo again. They have all been typical of the family; big, strong, rangy horses.”

Cracksman, meanwhile, bids to go two better for his sire, Frankel, after finishing third in the Derby.

During the past month, British-bred horses have shown their class in sprint, middle distance and long distance races, with British-sold horses also hitting headlines at both the Derby Festival and Royal Ascot, writes Minty Farquhar.

Juddmonte’s Enable lights up EpsomJuddmonte Farms’ Enable lit up a stormy Gr.1 Oaks at the beginning of the month, streaking away impressively to win by 5 lengths in record time. In doing so, the homebred filly gave Newsells Park’s sophomore stallion Nathaniel a first Classic success.

Enable’s dam, Concentric, has proved a valuable broodmare for Juddmonte, having also thrown Contribution, who was placed in the Gr.2 Prix de Pomone at Deauville last August. This success might have been anticipated by Juddmonte, given that Concentric’s sister produced multiple Gr.1 winner Flintshire, having herself been runner-up in the Gr.1 Prix de Diane.

Earlier in the day, Tattersalls was given cause to celebrate when its globe-trotting star graduate Highland Reel overcame a disrupted journey over from Ireland to grind out a fifth Gr.1 success in the Coronation Cup and get back on track after a disappointing run in this year’s Gr.1 Dubai Sheema Classic, won by British-bred Jack Hobbs.

Courage counts at Royal Ascot Highland Reel again showed his courageous nature when swiftly backing up this success with a sixth Gr.1 at Royal Ascot in the Prince of Wales’s Stakes at Royal Ascot, prevailing over British-bred dual Gr.1 winner Decorated Knight, who himself claimed the Gr.1 Tattersalls Gold Cup at the end of May.

Victory in Wednesday’s showpiece race took Highland Reel’s career earnings to £5,974,719, making him Tattersalls’ highest earning graduate of all time. The 5yo was bought for 460,000gns at Book 1 of the October Yearling Sale in 2013.

The following day, in what has since been labelled by many as the “race of the year”, Bill and Tim Gredley’s homebred Big Orange put up a characteristically gutsy performance to land the Gr.1 Gold Cup, proving too strong from the front for last year’s winner Order Of St George and giving British owner-breeders reason to cheer. The gelding’s earnings have now crossed the £1m threshold.

Despite having performed consistently well in quality long distance contests for the past three seasons, the Stetchworth & Middle Parks Studs flagbearer had never previously lined up in a Gr.1 contest in this country. Now that the Goodwood Cup has been upgraded to a Gr.1, the Gredleys and trainer Michael Bell will be hoping that this first top level victory can be swiftly followed by another when the homebred returns to the South Downs to bid for a third successive win in the race.

The closing day of Royal Ascot promised a thrilling sprint contest in the Gr.1 Diamond Jubilee Stakes over 6f, and it was British-bred The Tin Man who prevailed, leading home a British-bred 1-2 from Tasleet in 2nd. Taking on the same course and distance over which he won the Gr.1 British Champions Sprint Stakes last October, the James Fanshawe-trained 5yo overcame a less than perfect run to win his second contest at the top level.

Other established stallions also include: Cape Cross, Dark Angel, Dutch Art, Exceed And Excel, Iffraaj, Invincible Spirit, Kitten’s Joy, Kodiac, Lope De Vega, Sea The Stars, etc.

As the sale is the first yearling sale in the European calendar, it gives buyers the first opportunities to discover yearlings by first crop yearling sires: Anodin, Australia, Charm Spirit, Kingman, No Nay Never, Olympic Glory, Slade Power, Toronado, Verrazano and War Command.

No less than 140 yearlings are out of a mare that gained black-type on the racecourse, making 42% of the catalogue and 53% in Part 1, corresponding to the first two days of the sale. These two figures represent a marked increase from previous years, a reflection of the ongoing effort made by breeders in France to improve the quality of their broodmare bands.

In total there are 41 different consignors, with the largest offering coming from Ecurie des Monceaux, whose catalogued consignment numbers 34. They include Lot 37, an Invincible Spirit half-sister to the 2015 sale-topper Parabellum, Lot 51, a Galileo half-sister to Gr.1 Irish Oaks scorer Chicquita and Lot 79, a Siyouni half-sister to the Gr.3 winner and Gr.1 Prix de Diane runner-up Sistercharlie.

Other consignments include 24 from Haras des Capucines, whose offering includes a Siyouni half-brother to the multiple Gr.1 winner Zagora (Lot 103), while Coulonces Sales have 23 lots catalogued, including Lot 97, a Kendargent half-brother to Gr.1-winning juvenile and young sire Morandi.

Amongst Haras d’Etreham’s 21 yearlings are a Declaration Of War half-sister to the dual Gr.1 winner Shareta (Lot 67) and Lot 143, a full-brother to the aforementioned Almanzor. Haras de Mezeray also have 21 lots catalogued and they include Lot 80, an Invincible Spirit half-sister to the Gr.1-winning juvenile and sire Naaqoos.

Amongst the other choicely-bred yearlings are Lot 43, a Siyouni full-sister to the ill-fated Gr.2 winner Volta, offered by Haras d’Ellon; Lot 57, a Frankel half-brother to the Joint European Champion Two-Year-Old and sire Dabirsim, offered by Haras de Grandcamp; Lot 85, a New Approach half-brother to the dual Gr.2 winner Permain, offered by Camas Park and Glenvale Studs; Lot 101, a Kingman half-sister to Wings Of Eagles, offered by Haras de Montaigu and Lot 160, the Haras de la Perelle-offered Dubawi second foal out of the Gr.1 winner Giofra.

Arqana CEO Eric Hoyeau, commented: “We can say without a doubt that the quality of the August Sale catalogue keeps improving year on year. This is the result of a combination of favourable factors – the track record of our graduates, the improving standard of the stallion roster in France, the relentless efforts from French-based breeders to upgrade their stock, matched by those of our bloodstock team to headhunt some special individuals all around Europe. The input of the first factor may be bigger than usual this year, with the arrival on the market of the best-bred yearlings by Le Havre and Siyouni as well as progeny of some young sires who have already gained international recognition such as Dabirsim, Rajsaman and Wootton Bassett. On the track, the 2017 racing season has been off to a flying start, emphasised by the historical victory of Wings Of Eagles, the first Derby winner ever to have been bought at Deauville. The entire team that took part in the selection process share my confidence in the fact that the catalogue we are unveiling today will reveal many more outstanding racehorses, and we can’t wait for buyers from all around the world to see them.”

DUKE OF MARMALADE FILLY TOPS KZN YEARLING SALE OPENING DAYThe recent racecourse success enjoyed by Champion Duke Of Marmalade spilled over into the sales ring when a yearling filly from his first South African crop led the way at the opening session of the KZN Yearling Sale.

The thrilling victory of his immensely popular son Big Orange in the Gr.1 Gold Cup at Royal Ascot could not have come at a more opportune time for Rathmor Stud’s Mike McHardy, who consigned the sole representative of the Drakenstein-based stallion. She proved a queen in the sales ring. A quality dark bay, C’Est Serra (Lot 25) drew a flurry of bids and at R460,000, it was local trainer Gavin van Zyl, whose pocket proved the deepest.

“She’s a lovely filly and I’m lucky to get her, as all the right people were bidding,” he enthused. “Besides, the stallion has sired some outstanding fillies”, referring to the Duke’s Gr.1-winning daughters Simple Verse, Sound Of Freedom and Star Of Seville.

The filly’s female line likewise is not to be sneezed at. She is a half-sister to hard-knocking One Cool Dude. By Strike Smartly, the now seven-year-old claimed the Gr.3 Cup Trial amongst six wins for trainer Duncan Howells, who was one of the underbidders on the filly. One Cool Dude is now plying his trade in Mauritius where he has won the Duke of York Cup and was beaten a long head in his most recent outing on 3rd June. The dam Misty River (Western Winter) won three times and is out of Misty Heights (Jallad), a half-sister to Gr.3 Langerman winner and Gr.1 Cape Derby runner-up Gingko Tree. He was sired by Restructure, who like Duke Of Marmalade, is a son of Danehill.

Both the top-priced colt and filly came early in the sale. Owner Nic Jonsson dug himself into the trenches early to bid on Lot 3 and at R320,000, he prised a Summerhill-bred son of Visionaire away from the underbidders. The stallion, who moved from Summerhill to Lammerskraal last season, has enjoyed a fine run of success lately and Caliente, a chesnut like his sire, had the added advantage of being a half-brother to Gr.2-placed eight-time winner Greasepaint (Kahal), while the dam, Stakes-placed speedster Lady Red (Russian Revival), scored five times over the minimum trip.

Keeping it in the family, Nic’s father Benji secured the third top lot of the day when he outlayed R280,000 on the Scott Brothers-consigned Moonquest (Lot 46). The bay colt is by Middle Park Stakes hero Crusade (Mr Greeley), who has made a pleasing start to his new career as a stallion with a handful of first-crop winners. The dam, Al Mufti’s daughter Patchouli Moon, won the Gr.3 Three Troikas and hails from an Argentinian family which has enjoyed considerable success in South Africa, via Champion Three-Year-Old and Gr.1 Cape Derby winner Resfa, who went on to Gr.3 success in Hong Kong, as well as the top racemare Ahmatir, winner of the Gr.2 Fillies Classic.

New stallions never fail to grab the imagination and two first-season sires who found favour with buyers were Jackson and Noble Tune. The former, a Champion son of Dynasty, was responsible for Reymondo (Lot 121), which was on trainer Alistair Gordon’s shortlist. His bid of R240,000 was enough to secure Piemonte Stud’s smart bay, the second foal of Taj Mahal

EBN’s June Tweet of the Month winner is Amy Marnane.

Amy Marnane Bloodstock is a relatively new name to the ranks of UK and Ireland sales consignors in her own right, but as the daughter of Con and Theresa Marnane (Bansha House Stables) she has already gained a wealth of experience in the industry. A graduate of the 2016 Irish National Stud Thoroughbred Breeding Course, Marnane wasted no time in getting her name out there and consigned eight horses at the 2016 Tattersalls HIT Sale, quickly followed by eleven foals at the Goffs November Foal Sale.

Owning a Royal Ascot winner is what everybody dreams about, and this year it became a reality for the Marnane family as Different League (Dabirsim) blitzed home in the Gr.3 Albany Stakes. The filly was purchased as a foal from the 2015 Arqana December Sale and is trained in France by Matthieu Palussiere, who said “She has an amazing temperament and, when she won her last race, we thought she was pretty special.”

EBN and Keith Harte Woburn Stud would like to wish Amy Marnane the best of luck for the exciting career she has ahead of her in the industry.

grandam Kit Kat (Mexico II), a moderate two-time winner, made up for her lack of racing prowess as a broodmare. The dam of Gr.2-winning sprinter Thunder Cat and Gr.3 Matchem Stakes runner-up Bee Hive, she became ancestress of a host of Graded Stakes winners, notably Gr.1 Paddock Stakes victress Badger’s Gift.

Piemonte Stud also cashed in on What A Winter’s daughter Ambra (Lot 66), which will make the stables of Dennis Drier her new home after the Summerveld trainer gave R220,000 for the dark bay filly, who is out of the well-related Raspberry. Although the mare scored just once, she is a daughter of Oaks winner Taineberry (Centaine), the dam of Gr.2 winner Jalberry (Jallad) and also the grandam of Gr.1 Cape Guineas winner Solo Traveller, who like What A Winter, was sired by Western Winter.

Overall, the day proved a tough one for vendors as reflected in the final figures. Both the average and turnover came up short of the corresponding figures from 2016; the average shrunk from R88,360 to R72,110, while the aggregate declined from R10,074,000 to R7,860,000.

The second and concluding session starts today at noon.

Trip, a winning daughter of Champion stallion Trippi. The female line has a distinctly international feel to it, with prominent names on the catalogue page those of top sprinter and sire Invincible Spirit, the Champion filly Chinese White, as well as the young Coolmore stallion and Gr.1 winner Pride Of Dubai.

That price was matched by owner Mario Ferreira for Frozen Tune (Lot 143), a son of Noble Tune consigned by Clifton Stud. A Gr.2-winning son of Unbridled’s Song, Noble Tune arrived at Rathmor Stud as arguably the most exciting prospect in many a year. At the time, his half-brother Honor Code was burning up the American tracks, in addition to which he boasted a hugely popular female line, that of Champion Serena’s Song. Local breeders gave him their full support and he has no less than two dozen youngsters catalogued here. Frozen Tune is the first foal of the Western Winter mare Winter Feast, a grand daughter of Gr.1 Gold Cup victress Festive Forever (Foveros), who bred the joint Champion Juvenile Fearless to Western Winter.

Champion Sprinter What A Winter is off to a flyer as a stallion. With three individual Stakes winners amongst his 13 first-crop winners to date, the son of Western Winter leads the way amongst the freshman sires and not surprisingly, his youngsters are keenly pursued, with Howells Racing snapping up Hemel ‘N Aarde Stud’s as yet unnamed colt out of Pikachu (Lot 49) for R260,000. It has changed this area of the business, and explains why many of the specialists are relatively young men; they have grown up with an autumn season and were the first to use it for their businesses.”

LACEY LEAVES NO PLACE FOR SENTIMENTThe pinhooking of stores to resell as winning or placed pointers is just catching on in Britain, albeit the numbers are tiny compared to Ireland.

Herefordshire-based Tom Lacey is among crusaders proving that a store of Derby Sale calibre can win a British point and be resold at a profit – by mid-afternoon yesterday he had bought five at an average of €47,400 – former trainer Charlie Brooks is the most visible investor in Lacey’s purchases.

At the Derby Sale, during a lengthy inspection process that borders on ruthless out of necessity, Lacey says: “We are spoilt here – there are so many nice horses.” A store with potential is asked to stand up, walk out and trot back, and may be discussed at length with Brooks, but lesser models are soon dismissed with a ‘thank you’ to the groom.

Comments range from “An absolute beauty,” to “It’s a bit small in this sale; there’s plenty of other choice,” and “He doesn’t walk with any purpose,” or “He’s very upright in his front leg, lacks action and goes up and down on the spot.”

“T he day we buy is the day we sell,” says Charlie Brooks, during a visit to this week’s Derby Sale.

That principle was in the mind of many as they combed Tattersalls Ireland’s sales complex, looking for the next store that could turn a profit. Bloodstock agents, buying for trainers or racehorse owners, sought racehorses that might stay in a yard for the next ten years, but those on the pinhook trail, buying to sell, to paraphrase Brooks, worked on another criteria.

It involves buying, breaking-in, running, winning and reselling and, while that might be via a bumper or hurdle race, the point-to-point field offers greater scope. Such races prove a horse can jump and has stamina, but trainers don’t need a licence, there are lots of tracks around Britain and Ireland, and you are guaranteed a run, if too many horses are declared for a race it is divided, meaning ‘trainers’, or handlers as they are known in Ireland, can target a race on a date that suits their young horse’s preparation.

If that is conveniently close to a forthcoming sale, and the horse wins or is close behind a well-regarded rival, the final piece of the pinhook jigsaw is about to be placed.

By mid-afternoon yesterday, during the second and final session of the two-day Derby sale – Part II completes the catalogue today – three of these point-to-point pinhookers were among the top ten buyers, namely the Doyle brothers of Monbeg Stables (29 bought at an average of just over €38,000), Colin Bowe of Milestone (eight for just under €45,000) and Denis Murphy of Ballyboy Stables (eight for just under €43,000).

Those averages convey two points; this is not a game for paupers, but nor are such traders in the market for six-figure horses, yet, it will come.

Richard Pugh, Tattersalls Ireland’s director of horses in-training sales, and an authority on Irish point-to-pointing, does not lack admiration for such practitioners. He says: “The top players are different class. They have to select and value a horse, break it in, train it, and sell it – some people are good at one element, but the top players have a massive skill set. There have always been good horsemen, but the current group have evolved their systems and training methods.

“They are doing something that has no precedence – I was not around when Tom Costello and Padge Berry were trading, but the numbers now are different. That is partly due to the autumn season of pointing that was introduced [in Ireland] after foot and mouth [2001].

Another horse is described as having “no depth to his girth, so there’s no room for his lungs; and imagine when he’s fit; one gallop and the saddle would be up around his neck.”

A FAMILY BUSINESSThe rise of the Doyle family’s County Meath-based Monbeg Stables is little short of phenomenal. Starting with the purchase of one horse ten years ago, the business now involves five brothers who buy stores to sell after running in point-to-points.

Monbeg Dude, a €5,000 store purchase who was sold in 2010 to rugby players Mike Tindall and James Simpson-Daniel for £12,000 before winning a Gr.3 Welsh National and finishing third in the Gr.3 Grand National, was a fine advertisement for their business. The following year came dual Cheltenham Festival winner Holywell, who was bought for €7,000 and sold for ten times that sum, and one year later they traded The Last Samuri, a Grand National runner-up.

At 33, Sean is the oldest of the Monbeg horsemen, and one of three trainers, the others being Donnchadh and Cormac; Eamonn and Gearoid are also involved. Sean says: “We were brought up on a dairy farm, but as kids Donnchadh and I traded ponies and riding horses. A local man, Dermot Considine, gave us advice and help in getting started. Ten years ago we went to Goffs Land Rover sale and bought our first thoroughbred for €4,000, then sold him privately for a profit to Rosemary Gasson [a permit holder in Warwickshire]. The following year we bought four stores, and the year after that 14.”

The Monbeg wheel was in motion and, given the youth within the team [Gearoid is 17] it will not be stopping soon. Of some 80 stores bought last year, about 35 have been sold to date, which says Sean is a very good ratio, and the aim is to trade the remainder after they run in Irish points during the forthcoming autumn and winter.

“We were lucky,” admits Sean. “We had land at home, and our father was very kind and allowed us to use it to get started. He still has cattle and, while none of us want to be involved in dairy farming, he loves pointing.

“It’s a great sport, very friendly, albeit with a bit of rivalry. It’s been good to us. Every horse we own is for sale, and we’ll give one away if it proves unable to do a job for racing. The one thing we don’t do is put a horse down. Any profit we make is reinvested in horses or facilities.”

Those who buy young horses to pinhook invariably have a heap of knowledge and good contacts, yet the Doyles do not shackle themselves too rigidly on pre-sale research. Sean says: “If you study too long you can talk yourself out of a horse and buy nothing, but if you don’t study enough you could buy rubbish. You can’t put a price limit on a nice horse, because he could end up looking cheap in a year’s time. It’s a bit spur of the moment, but a store that makes €150,000 is out of our league because the profit would be very limited.”

THE POST-SALE PROCESSIt will be months before this week’s purchases will reveal whether they have the constitution to run in point-to-points next spring.

County Wexford-based Michael Goff says: “Those who are not ready become light, and cannot keep condition. Those who are ready to run eat less, while retaining condition. You learn a lot from what they eat.

“Their first real bit of work will come at the end of February; we go to a local schooling track where they will school over three miles, but they all go to the beach once a week, or to the cross-country course; we’re trying to keep them happy by doing different things.”

He had pointers with other handlers until the bank crash meant his building business went quiet, and he opted to train from home. His stores are lunged over a pole in their first week, and jump schooling fences once a week by the end of September. A three-week Christmas break is followed by further assessment to find out which horses can be tuned for a race.

It is a similar process at Monbeg Stables, where recently-bought stores are broken in, ridden away then given a break. Sean Doyle says: “They come back in on 1st September at which point we start assessing them. The forward ones could run between February and May, the others can start in the autumn season, which has been a very important addition to the sport. What was once a part-time job is now pretty much full time.

“A lot don’t make four-year-olds, but there is still a profit in a good five-year-old. You have to weigh up the options; a weak four-year-old who finishes third on its first start could be worth less than the five-year-old who is given time and wins.”

The second dam, Stormy Larissa (Royal Applause), delivered four other winners, including Stormy Paradise (Excellent Art), who ran fourth in a French Listed race. Stormy Larissa is a half-sister to Khibrah (Lahib), and is from the same female line of the multiple Gr.1 winner and sire Slade Power (Dutch Art).

Annistedda has a yearling filly by Permesso. Franco Raimondi

Grounds) and grandam of the Gr.1 Phoenix Stakes winner Sudirman (Henrythenavigator). The third dam, Paradise Bird (Sallust), won twice as a two-year-old.

Lady Alexander has a yearling colt by Dark Angel and her twelve-year-old daughter Elegant Way (Cape Cross) is catalogued as Lot 259 at the Tattersalls July Sale.
