1st CORINTHIAN - CHAPTER 13 Rewritten for the Christmas Season If I decorate my house perfectly with lovely plaid bows, strands of twinkling lights, and shiny glass balls, but do not show love to my family, I’m just another decorator. If I slave away in the kitchen, baking dozens of Christmas cookies, preparing gourmet meals, and arranging a beautifully adorned table at mealtime, but do not show love to my family, I’m just another cook. If I work at the soup kitchen, carol in the nursing home, and give all that I have to charity, but do not show love to my family, it profits me nothing. If I trim the spruce with shimmering angels and crocheted snowflakes, attend a myriad of holiday parties, and sing in the choir’s cantata but do not focus on Christ, I have missed the point. Love stops the cooking to hug the child. Love sets aside the decorating to kiss the husband. Love doesn’t envy another home that has coordinated Christmas china and table linens. Love doesn’t yell at the kids to get out of your way. Love doesn’t give only to those who are able to give in return, but rejoices in giving to those who can not. Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, and endures all things. Love never fails. Video games will break; pearl necklaces will be lost; golf clubs will rust. But giving the gift of love will endure. www.StMichaelsCleveland.org | 5025 E. Mill Road | Broadview Heights, Ohio 44147 | 440.526.5192 DECEMBER 2019

1st CORINTHIAN - CHAPTER 13Rewritten for the Christmas Season

If I decorate my house perfectly with lovely plaid bows, strands of twinkling lights, and shiny glass balls, but do not show love to my family, I’m just another decorator.

OFTEN OVERLOOKEDMy favorite excerpt of Dickens’ Christmas Carol is the almost overlooked conversation between Bob Cratchit has with his wife upon returning home from church with Tiny Tim. Bob tells her that Tim “hoped the people in church saw him because he was a cripple and it might be pleasant for them to remember upon Christmas Day the one who made lame beggars walk and blind men see.” What is so touching about this statement is the fact that Tiny Tim wasn’t seeking pity for his affliction, but humbly desired even his crippled body to be a means to reflect God’s glory on that great Feast. On this year’s Bright and Radiant Nativity Feast, may we also truly honor the Christ Child by “setting an example in speech and conduct, in love, in faith, and in purity” (1st Timothy 4:12) - Fr. John

Christ is in our midst! I welcome all of the brothers to the Autumn Session of the Holy Synod of Bishops of the Orthodox Church in America. This year, we celebrate the 225th anniversary of the arrival of the monastic missionaries to Alaska in 1794 and we look ahead to our year-long celebration of the 50th anniversary of the granting of autocephaly and the glorification of Saint Herman of Alaska. These are historic events that define us as a local Church and they will occupy a significant portion of our agenda this week, along with a number of other important pastoral and ecclesiastical matters. For this meeting, we have deferred the celebration of the Divine Liturgy to allow for a synodal concelebration on the feast of Saint John Chrysostom tomorrow at St Vladimir’s Seminary, a day which also marks the seventh anniversary of my election as the Primate of the Orthodox Church in America. This concelebration by our entire brotherhood, rarely done outside of the All-American Council, will be a wonderful way to inaugurate our anniversary year and to make a formal proclamation to the Church inviting them to participate and prayerfully support our common celebration.

This is the first Holy Synod following the repose of our brother and concelebrant, Archbishop Nikon, formerly of Boston, New England, and the Albanian Archdiocese, who fell asleep in the Lord on September 1st of this year, on the commemoration of the ecclesiastical New Year. I am certain that all of us continue both to remember him in our prayers and to reflect upon the fruit of his Archpastoral ministry and his contributions to this brotherhood and to the life and mission of the Orthodox Church in America. We will have occasion later today

to intone “memory eternal” to him and we will offer a memorial service for him on Thursday, as well as lifting up his name tomorrow at the Divine Liturgy.

I am grateful for your prayers as we gather as a brotherhood to address all of the matters that impact the life of the Orthodox Church in America with the guidance of the Holy Spirit and I invite the brothers to venerate the Cross and the Gospel and receive the blessing of the sanctified water.

Once again, it is good to welcome the brothers to the Autumn 2019 Session of the Holy Synod of Bishops of the Orthodox Church in America. We have a full agenda and will maintain the structure of our Spring Session, that is, meeting in closed session, unless a guest is specifically invited to make a report. We will also maintain the same clear delineation between deliberative sessions and decision-making sessions, allowing an appropriate amount of time for those topics which require more discussion, but also punctuating our deliberation with clear action items and decisions. Beginning with this meeting, we have also introduced a fully electronic report book which was delivered to you in the form of a dedicated and secure website to which all the documents could be uploaded for easy reference. That website will be continuously updated during our sessions, so please make sure to refer to it as needed. We nevertheless have provided you with a slimmer binder containing the most immediately relevant documents (the main omission are the Metropolitan Council materials). These documents are generally numbered according to the order of their chronological presentation during our sessions, for ease of reference.

HALOSS’mores and More November event was a smashing hit with our largest turnout to date at 47 people! 20 adults and 27 kids including our youngest member, Maxim Herzak—who made his first appearance! Our precious Halos filled their bellies with grilled cheese sandwiches in the Shanty as Fr. John shared a “fiery” story from God’s Word. Afterwards, warming up by the fire was a must on the chilly November night, but no one seemed to mind as we all stuffed our face with roasted marshmallows, s’mores and apples! We proceeded to the gym so we could finish warming up by racing each other with a fun fall relay game using candy corn. To top off the night, we had six Halos recite from memory John 15:5 to earn a prize!! All in all, we are looking forward to gathering again soon and sharing some Christmas cheer with the cute cherubs on December 6 from 6-8 PM at the Noll residence! Don’t forget to RSVP to Beth at 216-402-3276 or look us up on Facebook at Archangel Michael Halos!

TEST YOUR KNOWLEDGE ON THE NATIVITY OF CHRIST 1). What is a manger?2). What is frankincense?3). In which city did the birth of Jesus take place?4). Who ordered the death of many young male babies?5). To where did Mary and Joseph take the baby to escape?6). For what reason did Joseph and Mary travel of Bethlehem?7). What are swaddling cloths?8). Which Old Testament prophet predicted the virgin birth of Christ?9). Which carol says, “While mortals sleep, the angels keep their watch?”10). To which city in the Holy Land did the Magi first go?11). In this novel, the Pequod leaves the harbor on a cold Christmas day?12). What are the names of the three Wise Men (Magi)?13). Jesus was given His name and circumcised on this day after His birth?14). In this short story by O. Henry, Jim and his wife Della exchange gifts that end up being a twist of fate.15). Which artist released a 2009 album titles, “Christmas in the Heart”?16). The character in this novel said, “I will honor Christmas in my heart, and try to keep it all the year.”17). After he stole all of the Christmas presents from their homes, this character ponders his actions, saying, “Maybe Christmas” he thought, “doesn’t come from a store.”18). This character, “hoped the people in church saw him because he was a cripple and it might be pleasant for them to remember upon Christmas Day the one who made lame beggars walk and blind men see.”19). What was the ancient name of the town of Bethlehem?20). What date is our Lord’s Nativity celebrated on the Old (“Julian”) Calendar?

SOMETHING TO THINK ABOUTOur Lord’s Nativity overturned the laws of nature and created paradoxes which continue to be stumbling blocks to many. For instance:

• A Virgin gives birth.• God becomes man.• The eternal One enters time.• The uncontainable is contained.• The uncreated is created.• The invisible becomes visible.• The Law-giver submits to the law.• The All-knowing grows in wisdom and understanding.• The One Who has no need of baptism is baptized.• The All-powerful voluntarily takes on human weakness and

frailty.• The King of Glory accepts humiliation.• The Immortal One willfully submits to death.• It is through love, not power, that our Lord attracts and receives

worship.• It is friendship rather than compulsion that draws us into His

service.• He prefers companionship with the weak, the marginal, the

outcast, the hurt and needy to that of those who are powerful, successful, tasteful, clever, good-looking...and unrepentant.

NATIVITY QUIZ - ANSWERS1 – a low, open feeding trough2 – the sap or resin from a Boswellia tree that is burned as incense3 – Bethlehem; 4 – Herod, the king of Judea5 – Egypt6 – to be enrolled or registered in the census7 – strips of cloth commonly used to wrap a newborn8 – Isaiah9 – “O Little Town of Bethlehem”10 – Jerusalem 11 – Moby Dick12 – Melchior, Casper, and Balthazar13 – the eighth day14 – “The Gift of the Magi”15 – Bob Dylan16 – Ebenezer Scrooge17 – the Grinch18 – Tiny Tim19 – Ephrattha20 – December 25th, the same as the New (“Gregorian”) Calendar; it’s just that there is at present a thirteen day differential between the two.

CHURCH INFORMATION

Since the Christmas season is upon us, here are a few guidelines for choosing safe toys:

• Inspect toys before purchasing. Avoid those with flying parts or that shoot.• Toys should not have sharp edges or points and should be sturdy enough to withstand any significant impact without breaking.• Choose toys for children with special needs that appeal to different senses such as texture, sound, and movement. Consider toys size

appropriate and those that allow the child to play with others.• Inspect the toys your child receives. Check for age and skill level. Make sure of the

developmental appropriateness.• Make sure the toys have passed a safety inspection. “ATSM” means the toy has met

the American Society for Testing and Materials standards.• Make sure Crayons are “nontoxic.”• Make sure the toys do not have small part including magnets or small button

batteries.• Make sure the toys do not contain lead.• Make sure toys do not have ropes or heating elements.

Have a blessed Christmas season!

Orthodox Q & AQ: On the Gregorian calendar the Feast of our Lord’s Nativity falls upon December 25. What day does it fall upon on the Julian calendar?

A: Both the Gregorian and Julian calendars celebrate Christ’s Nativity on December 25. However, since at present there is a thirteen-day differential between the two calendars, the Julian date of December 25 falls upon the Gregorian’s January 7. Eventually another full day will need to be added to the Julian calendar to make up for its mathematical inaccuracies – thus making it a fourteen-day differential. This means that at that point December 25 will fall on January 8!

“O House of Ephrathah…”As part of the Church’s pre-festal hymns for the Nativity of Christ we sing this lilting, yet very sublime hymn: “O house of Ephrathah, the holy city, the glory of the holy prophets: beautify the house in which the Divine One is born.”

Ephrathah was the ancient name of modern-day Bethlehem, the place where Christ’s Nativity took place. References to this fact are found in the prophecy of Micah: “But you, O Bethlehem Ephrathah, who are little to be among the clans of Judah, from you shall come forth for me one who is to be ruler in Israel, whose origin is from of old, from ancient of days.” (Micah 5:2)

Ephrathah (Bethlehem) is also the traditional site of Rachel’s burial after she died giving birth to Benjamin (Gen. 35:16-21); a connection made all the more profound after King Herod ordered all the male children in that region, two years old and younger, to be slaughtered in an attempt to destroy the Christ Child: “A voice was heard in Ramah, wailing and loud lamentations, Rachel weeping for her children; she refused to be consoled, because they were no more.” (Matt. 2:18 quoting Jeremiah 31:15)
