* RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THIS TOPIC AND THE CULTURE OF MACAU

*One of the many similarities between the two locations’ religion is that there are so many kinds. But there are different ways to express them all because of Culture

* AS you all know, Religion is the belief in a God and in the meaning of life. Culture is a set of customs and cultural habits shared by many people. It is true that sometimes religion can be part of the culture of a country, but that doesn't mean that these two things are the same.

*This particular topic’s relation with culture is that history formed religion. To compare with HKSAR, there are a few different characteristics because of the changes of history (the Basic Law)

*The history of Macau/Macao is very long, due to there are so many religious events happening in Macau over the long years.

*Since HK once belonged to China, the citizens also followed the Triple Religion like their ancestors and their sister city

*Also, Since Macau is near HK, Reverend Robert Morrison also came to HK to send his message from god Lord to the people of the Chinese: “To lead them to the way of the God’s life, follow the mighty Shepard and let him lead your life.”

in HKSAR and Macau

*Christian: When the American Missionary Mr. Robert Morrison came from Nueva York to Macau. China, he started his work of religion in Macau and Hong Kong.

He dressed and lived like a citizen of the Chinese, living in secret and trying to persuade the Chinese to follow the path of God.

*Continuing the

topic……

*Taoism spread to Macao in the third century when Macao belonged to Fanyu county.

*Taoism developed quickly during the Song Dynasty when Macao belonged to Xiangshan county. Records of Xiangshan states that several Taoist temples were built at that time.

*Taoism development further during the Yuan, Ming and Qing dynasties. The Supreme Clarity Temple and Northern Emperor Temple played very important roles in Taoism's spread to Macao.

Confucianism

*Many people who live in Macau are Chinese. The culture of Macau is influenced by Chinese Confucianism and morality.

* In 1909, the Macau Confucianism organization was started. The purpose of the Macau Confucianism Organization is to "respect Confucianism, spread the holy virtue, educate the talented, promote the culture". They started a school to teach them this motto and its meanings with different Confucian books, such as “Mencius”

*Others that caught our sight

*There are other religions in these two regions apart from the ones shown, such as : Islam, Falun Gong and WAV(Vodun/voodoo).

*Also there are some people who are weirdly believing in the religion of Mayan, which is one of the dead races in this world.

*Data collected from Macau

*Most people in Macau believed in the religion of Buddhism due to the people in early China and early Macau, but there are at least 45 per- cent of people who believed in different kinds of religion, such as Christian, Roman Catholic, because the missionaries came to Macau due to the different laws of China doesn’t allow it, due to the laws for the people of different countries does not allow foreigners to come to HKSAR or Guangdong.

*A dialogue from

the interviews

*“They do not respect the religion like in the old days.” One old interviewee said,” They do not respect the gods like their ancestors; they just say the oath of the gods and go along without respecting them.” He also said that in the present day, if god was on land, he will personally banish them himself.

An interview with an anti-Taoism

*1. I am a carefree person, I do not care about this religion and I certainly do not want to know about its history in Macau or in HKSAR.

*2.Even if my school is a Taoism School, I do not want to know or learn about it, they are quite boring and they only talk about Confucius, which only involves history, which is only spoken in China History.

*3. Since the Law didn’t forbid us to not choose a religion, so I would go this way as well without any regret or remorse to think or to do. But I still hate this religion because even though I study in a Taoism school in HK, I do not like the culture and its traditions

*4. No, because if it is Taoism or Buddhism, they have to ring a lot of annoying bells or speak a lot of unknown and loud languages; even though that Christian is much better, they still cause a lot of chaos on the streets with their loudspeakers.

* The similarities and differences of religion between MACAU and HKSAR

Similarities :

*All religion came from China, Portugal and America

*The laws for religious events and choice of religion are on the same principle- the Diocese of Macau and the treaty of the Special Administrative Region

*There are many religious- themed or related activities, arguments and treaties in these two locations.

*The two regions’ governments both respected religion with great passion

Page 19: 1S (28) Dragon Yu Yiu Ting(Leader/ report writer) (18) John Ngan Tsz Chun (Secretary 1/ interviewer) (18) John Ngan Tsz Chun (Secretary 1/ interviewer)

Differences

*Since Macau is the first city that started religion such as Protestantism Christian and Roman Catholic, so there are more different churches and cemeteries in Macau than Hong Kong that stored information of the history of religion.

* The graves of the most famous people in religious history are most buried in Macau because according to history, Macau is also the “City of God”, which has a long line of the word religion behind it, in which that Hong Kong has no history of religion apart from Buddhism

Page 20: 1S (28) Dragon Yu Yiu Ting(Leader/ report writer) (18) John Ngan Tsz Chun (Secretary 1/ interviewer) (18) John Ngan Tsz Chun (Secretary 1/ interviewer)

*The Basic Law

time!

*Religion in both Macau and HKSAR are diverse: there are no state religions; the freedom of religion and belief is protected by the constitutional document: the Basic Law.

*The government allows freedom of religion; residents have the right to practice their religion of choice. Based on the Basic Law, "The people in both Macau and HKSAR have freedom of religion and they can preach, or participate in religious activities

Page 21: 1S (28) Dragon Yu Yiu Ting(Leader/ report writer) (18) John Ngan Tsz Chun (Secretary 1/ interviewer) (18) John Ngan Tsz Chun (Secretary 1/ interviewer)

*Conclusion

*Religion is a big topic, because there are so many churches and temples in the world and the kinds and numbers of religion. Everywhere, there are so many churches and temples to honor the gods. Religion is also very special and would cause many arguments, because for many years, the number of religious activities and events caused many arguments and many parades of angry people.
