Williston Downtowners Association and Williston Area Chamber of Commerce today announced their participation in Small Business Saturday, taking place on November 29, 2014. Small Business Saturday is a day dedicated to strengthening the community by supporting local small busi-nesses. “Small businesses help make Downtown Williston a vibrant and unique shopping destination,” said Williston Downtowners Association Ex-ecutive Director, Karissa Kjos.

Williston Downtowners Association and Williston Area Chamber of Commerce rec-ognize the importance of sup-porting small business in Wil-liston, the jobs they help create and the culture they instill in local communities. “Regard-less of where you live, small businesses remain the back-bone of local economies and have been for generations,” said Williston Area Chamber of Commerce Executive Di-rector, Scott Meske. According to the U.S. Small Businesses Administration, as of 2012, small businesses nationwide accounted for 64% of net new private sector jobs created and represented 99.7% of all

West Side Elementary School will have its annual Book Fair, Nov. 19-21, at the West Side School Library, 1100 5th Street SW. The Book Fair will be open during regular school hours, as well as from 2-6 PM Wednesday, Nov. 20, and 3-7:00 PM Thursday, Nov. 20. The fair ends at 10:00 AM Friday.

This reading event will offer students, parents and teachers the opportunity to

see the latest works by pop-ular authors and illustrators of books for children. Along with winners of state and national awards, the Book Fair will present hundreds of titles se-lected to excite and motivate students to become lifelong readers. Special attention is

appeal to the emergent, the experienced, and the reluctant reader.

All parents of Preschool and younger children are in-vited to attend, as there will be

many selections just right for those age levels, too.

Ron and Barb Scherry, well-known educators in el-ementary education in Mon-tana before taking over Great Northern Book Company, will be doing book talks with stu-dents Wednesday morning, and will be available through-out the Book Fair to give advice on reading selections.

For more information, contact librarian Dawn Green-wood at West Side Elementary School, 433-2530.

Submitted by Richland Shrine ClubRichland Shrine Club of Sidney is starting its 2015 Shrine

Hospital Fund drive. The overhead of the direct mail campaign; envelopes, postage, etc. are furnished by the Richland Shrine Club. Last year we gathered $9,946.33 and sent that same amount to the Shrine Hospital.

Richland Shrine Club is currently sponsoring many pa-tients in various stages of their treatment. The typical patient makes several trips to the hospital in Spokane, Salt Lake City or Minneapolis. The average hospital stay is seven to eight days, but surgery and/or treatment may be over several years to accommodate growth of the child.

The SHRINE operates 22 pediatric hospitals, which in-cludes 19 orthopedic hospitals to help children with problems of the bones, joints or muscles and 3 Burns Institutes for children needing reconstructive surgery and rehabilitation as a result of burn injuries.

Since 1922, Shrine Hospitals for Crippled Children have been helping children, regardless of race, creed or color. The Majority of the support of the Hospitals for patient treatment and

research is by the Shriners, Endowment fund, and charitable fund-raising events by Shriners and Shrine Clubs. This Hospital Fund Drive is only one of many types of projects throughout North America by Shriners. Currently through the benevolence of Shriners and other Masonic bodies two million dollars per day is going towards various Philanthropic endeavors, such as our hospitals.

2015 Wheat Show Hi-LitesSubmitted by Warren Froelich

NDSU Extension Agent - Williams CountyThe 62nd Annual National Hard Spring Wheat Show will

focus on a variety of issues but much emphasis will be given to strategies of preventing Fusarium head blight (SCAB) and

and vomitoxin. These issues will be discussed by Dr. Senay Simsek of the Northern Crops Institute, NDSU Crop Quality Specialist and Grain Marketers.

Another hot issue on the agenda is grain transportation. Dan Wogsland, Executive Director of the Northern Grain Grow-ers Association will give us the latest details on efforts to bring balance to get grains to milling and export destinations.

Consumer issues including gluten intolerance and food

varieties and crop salinity tolerances. The keynote speaker is Dr. Mike Boehlje of Purdue Univer-

sity. One of his presentations will focus on a possible cyclical downturn of agriculture income. He is concerned about the fall or a possible decline in exports due to the decline of economic

growth in China and India. He also feels farmers can expect interest rates to rise steadily during the balance of the decade. The U.S. farmers export products equal to approximately 25% of their income.

The world has put more land under the plow and he feels this and other factors could cause agricultural land values to drop as much as 15%.

Of course during his three-hour presentation Dr. Boehlje

production decisions in the near future.During the Williams County Farmers Union luncheon

attendees will learn how they can easily be advocates of the business of farming. Also, the Williams County Farmers Union has secured a great speaker who will talk, sing, and make us laugh and cry. This presentation by Mark J. Lindquist is titled “Passion! 8 Steps to Find Yours”.

The “Trade Show”, photo contest, and Bread Fair for area 5th grade students will continue as in the past. Watch for more details, as I will bring them to your attention in future weekly columns.
