THE OLD TESTAMENT READING Genesis 2:18-25

18Then the Lord God said, “It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him a

helper fit for him.” 19So out of the ground the Lord God formed every beast of the field and every bird

of the heavens and brought them to the man to see what he would call them. And whatever the man

called every living creature, that was its name. 20The man gave names to all livestock and to the birds

of the heavens and to every beast of the field. But for Adam there was not found a helper fit for him. 21So the Lord God caused a deep sleep to fall upon the man, and while he slept took one of his ribs

and closed up its place with flesh. 22And the rib that the Lord God had taken from the man he made

into a woman and brought her to the man. 23Then the man said,

Page 4: 19th Sunday after Pentecost Divine Service - Setting One

“This at last is bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh;

she shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of Man.”

24Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and they shall

become one flesh. 25And the man and his wife were both naked and were not ashamed.

Lector: This is the Word of the Lord.

People: Thanks be to God.

THE PSALM Psalm 128

Pastor: Blessed is everyone who fears the Lord,

People: Who walks in his ways!

Pastor: You shall eat the fruit of the labor of your hands;

People: You shall be blessed, and it shall be well with you.

Pastor: Your wife will be like a fruitful vine within your house;

People: Your children will be like olive shoots around your table.

Pastor: Behold, thus shall the man be blessed,

People: Who fears the Lord.

Pastor: The Lord bless you from Zion!

People: May you see the prosperity of Jerusalem all the days of your life!

Pastor: May you see your children's children!

People: Peace be upon Israel!

People: Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit. As it was in the beginning, is

now, and will be forever. Amen.

THE EPISTLE Hebrews 2:5-13

5 It is not to angels that he has subjected the world to come, about which we are speaking. 6 But there

is a place where someone has testified: “What is man that you are mindful of him, the son of man that

you care for him? 7 You made him a little lower than the angels; you crowned him with glory and

honor 8 and put everything under his feet.” In putting everything under him, God left nothing that is

not subject to him. Yet at present we do not see everything subject to him. 9 But we see Jesus, who

Page 5: 19th Sunday after Pentecost Divine Service - Setting One

was made a little lower than the angels, now crowned with glory and honor because he suffered

death, so that by the grace of God he might taste death for everyone. 10 In bringing many sons to

glory, it was fitting that God, for whom and through whom everything exists, should make the author

of their salvation perfect through suffering. 11 Both the one who makes men holy and those who are

made holy are of the same family. So Jesus is not ashamed to call them brothers. 12 He says, “I will

declare your name to my brothers; in the presence of the congregation I will sing your praises.” 13 And

again, “I will put my trust in him.” And again he says, “Here am I, and the children God has given me.”

Lector: This is the Word of the Lord.

People: Thanks be to God.

ALLELUIA AND VERSE LSB 156

THE HOLY GOSPEL Mark 10:2-16

Pastor: The Holy Gospel according to St. Mark, the 10th chapter.

People: Glory to You oh Lord (sung)

2Pharisees came up and in order to test [Jesus] asked, “Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife?” 3He

answered them, “What did Moses command you?” 4They said, “Moses allowed a man to write a

certificate of divorce and to send her away.” 5And Jesus said to them, “Because of your hardness of

heart he wrote you this commandment. 6But from the beginning of creation, ‘God made them male

and female.’ 7‘Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and hold fast to his wife, 8and they

shall become one flesh.’ So they are no longer two but one flesh. 9What therefore God has joined

together, let not man separate.”

10And in the house the disciples asked him again about this matter. 11And he said to them,

“Whoever divorces his wife and marries another commits adultery against her, 12and if she divorces

her husband and marries another, she commits adultery.”

Page 6: 19th Sunday after Pentecost Divine Service - Setting One

13And they were bringing children to him that he might touch them, and the disciples rebuked

them. 14But when Jesus saw it, he was indignant and said to them, “Let the children come to me; do

not hinder them, for to such belongs the kingdom of God. 15Truly, I say to you, whoever does not

receive the kingdom of God like a child shall not enter it.” 16And he took them in his arms and blessed

them, laying his hands on them.

Pastor: This is the Gospel of the Lord.

Praise to You oh Christ (sung)

THE NICENE CREED

I believe in one God, the Father Almighty,

maker of heaven and earth, and of all things visible and invisible.

And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God, begotten of His Father before all worlds, God of God, Light of Light, very God of very God, begotten, not made, being of one substance with the Father, by whom all things were made; who for us men and for our salvation came down from heaven and was incarnate by the Holy Spirit of the virgin Mary and was made man; and was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate. He suffered and was buried. And the third day He rose again according to the Scriptures and ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of the Father. And He will come again with glory to judge both the living and the dead, whose kingdom will have no end.

And I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord and giver of life,

who proceeds from the Father and the Son,

who with the Father and the Son together is worshiped and glorified,

who spoke by the prophets.

And I believe in one holy Christian and apostolic Church,

I acknowledge one Baptism for the remission of sins,

and I look for the resurrection of the dead,

and the life of the world to come. Amen.

PRAYER OF THE CHURCH

Pastor: Gracious God, Giver of life and health, of daily bread and the eternal feast, grant a bountiful

harvest, if it be Your will, to the farmers of this land and those across the globe. May people here and

everywhere lift up voices of thanksgiving as their physical needs are met. Lord, in Your mercy,

People: Hear our prayer.

Pastor: Grant to every home and all our families Your peace and Your protection, that we may know

and share the comfort of Your love, and rejoice together in Your presence among us through Word

and Sacrament. Lord, in Your mercy,

People: Hear our prayer.

Pastor: For the mission of the Lutheran Women’s Missionary League here at St. Matthew and

throughout the world, that every heart will beat with Your love and all hearts extend Your hand of

service to others. Through the faithful gathering of mites, may Lutheran Women in Mission continue to

encourage us to put all You have given us into the mission of reaching the lost and erring. Lord, in Your

mercy,

People: Hear our prayer.

Pastor: Author of life and salvation, strengthen the faith of all who trust in Your Son. Come to the aid of

those who are sick or hospitalized (especially…). As they look forward to the day when You will wipe

away tears from all faces, give hope now to all who mourn loved ones near and dear to them. (We

especially remember...) Lord, in Your mercy,

People: Hear our prayer.

Pastor: Into Your hands, O Lord, we commend all for whom we pray, trusting in Your mercy for

the sake of Your Son, Jesus Christ, our Lord.

People: Amen.

+ SERVICE OF THE SACRAMENT +

PREFACE

Pastor: The Lord be with you.

People: And also with you.

Pastor: Lift up your hearts.

People: We lift them to the Lord.

Pastor: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.

People: It is right to give Him thanks and praise.

Pastor: It is truly good, right, and salutary that we should at all times and in all places give thanks to

You, holy Lord, almighty Father, everlasting God, through Jesus Christ, our Lord, who, having created all

things, took on human flesh and was born of the virgin Mary. For our sake He died on the cross and rose

from the dead to put an end to death, thus fulfilling Your will and gaining for You a holy people.

Therefore with angels and archangels and with all the company of heaven we laud and magnify Your

glorious name, evermore praising You and saying:

THE LORD’S PRAYER

Our Father who art in heaven, Hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come,

Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven; Give us this day our daily bread.

And forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us;

And lead us not into temptation, But deliver us from evil.

For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen.

THE WORDS OF OUR LORD

Pastor: Our Lord Jesus Christ, on the night when He was betrayed, took bread, and when He had given

thanks, He broke it and gave it to the disciples and said: “Take, eat; this is My + body, which is given for

you. This do in remembrance of Me.”

In the same way also He took the cup after supper, and when He had given thanks, He gave it to them,

saying: “Drink of it, all of you; this cup is the new testament in My + blood, which is shed for you for the

forgiveness of sins. This do, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me.”

PAX DOMINI

Pastor: The peace of the Lord be with you always.

People: Amen.
