Tiger head coach Chris Bartels ismaking waves in the Great Midwest Con-ference and beyond. Behind Bartels'lead-ership, the 1992 squad posted a .789winning percentage, the all-time seasonbest at MSU. As the 1993 season ap-proaches, Bartels hopes to build on hispast accomplishments and is lookingforward to the new season as the 1992defending co-champions of the GreatMidwest Conference.

In an effort to gain national notoriety,Bartels has improved the strength of theschedule every year and this year is noexception. This year's 20-game sched-ule includes nine games at home and 11on the road. In one stretch, the Tigersplay nine of 10 games on the road, including matches at St. Louis andCoastal Carolina, of which both advancedto the second round of the 1992 NCAAtournament. The home schedule includesmatches with the '92 Atlantic 10 champi-ons, West Virginia; '92 Sun Belt Tourna-ment champions South Alabama; andlong-time MSU rival, Louisville.

Since Bartels arrived at MSU in 1988,he has seen major improvements in theprogram and the soccer facilities. Bartelshas worked with the MSU Athletic De-partment, Tiger Clubs and the Friends ofSoccer Club to make major improve-ments to Echles Reid, home of the Ti-gers. In 1992, all of the hard work paidoff. Permanent seating was increased to1,000 and the Tigers averaged just un-der 800 fans per game. The season highwas an overflow crowd of 1,290 against

St. Louis.Bartels strives for excellence in the

classroom as well as on the field byrecruiting student-athletes. His programwas recognized for its academic excel-lence in 1992 and 1993. With 11 mem-bers of the Tiger Academic 3.0 club,Bartels squad matched football for themost members from a single program atMSU.

A New Jersey native, Bartels at-tended River Dell High School in Oradell,N.J., before signing with Bowling GreenState University on a soccer scholarship.During his junior year at BGSU, Bartelsworked in public relations for the NewYork Cosmos. After graduating in 1973with a degree in journalism and publicrelations, Bartels stayed at BGSU as anassistant coach until he became a player-coach for the Athletes in Action soccerteam. In 1980, Bartels returned to BGSUas an assistant coach and physical edu-cation instructor while earning a master'sdegree in physical education.

Bartels, who has worked as GeneralManager or coach for three professionalsoccer teams, arrived in Memphis in1982 as an assistant coach and PlayerPersonnel Director for the MemphisAmericans of the Major Indoor SoccerLeague. Later, he served as the headcoach and General Manager of theKalamazoo Kangaroos in the AmericanIndoor Soccer Association.

From 1986 to 1987 Bartels was Gen-eral Manager of the Memphis Storm.

1993 SEASON PREVIEW 4

Coming off the best season in Mem-phis State University history, Tiger headcoach Chris Bartels not only faces amajor rebuilding year but he must alsocontend with the added pressure of be-ing a "marked" team facirtg his mostdifficult schedule ever.

Bartels must replace three defend-ers and find an offensive star to replaceMSU's second all-time leading scorer,Gareth p'Sullivan.

While Bartels lost many of his veter-ans, he thinks the 1993 team will be oneof his more skillful and talented teams, although it figures to be one of his leastexperienced squads.

Gone from the 1992 Great MidwestConference regular season co-champi-ons are Scott Spencer, Frank Pileggiand Rick Morris, who anchored the Tigerdefense for the last three years. In 1992,the Tigers gave up only 16 goals, anMSU record, while scoring 38.

Without the great defensive effort ofthe Tigers, goalkeeperBrooks Monaghanwould have had a tough time attaining agoals'-against-average of 0.80, one ofthe lowest in the nation.

The only position Bartels doesn'thave to worry about is goalkeeper. AnAll-America candidate, Monaghan wasthe fifth-ranked goalie in the nation atone point a year ago. He finished theyear as the top-ranked goalie in theSouth region and inthetop-10 nationally.Backing up Monaghan is Jake Meyer, asophomore from Vancouver, Wash.Meyer was a member of the OlympicDevelopment squad in Washington anda four-year all-state selection.

Brent Jordan, a seniorfrom St. Louis,Mo., is the lone returning starter on thedefense.

"Brent has the experience and theskills necessary to become an excellentdefender," Bartels said. "We'll just haveto build the defense around him."

Forthe first time in several years theTiger defense poses a question mark for

Bartels."We haven't had to worry too much

about defense the last couple of years,"Bartels said. "Last year all we really hadto worry about was scoring goals, but thisyear we have a two-pronged attack ofworries. We have to worry about bothdefense and scoring goals."

During the spring, Bartels experi-mented with several combinations in aneffort to shore up his defense. However,he is most concerned about the last lineof defense, the sweeper position.

That's the big question mark, whowill play sweeper," Bartels said, "be-cause you've got to have a strongsweeper that reads the game well andcommunicates well with the people infront of him."

Thomas Olhmeier saw time at thesweeper position during the spring andBartels was pleasantly surprised.Ohlmeier, a midfielder in '92, was theTigers' second leading scorer and led theteam in assists with six. He also tied forthe team lead in game-winning goalswith three. Another defensive possibilityis Clint Browne, who played the sweeperposition last summer for a local semi-proteam in Memphis and did quite well, according to Bartels.

"Realistically, I neverconsidered Clintat sweeper," said Bartels. "After seeinghis play last summer, he is a definiteoption for us."

Bartels expects to have a little moredepth at the defender position, though itwill be inexperienced. Justin Rose, GoranLarsson, Brian Reddin, Johnny Neff andRobert Pepper are all expected to com-pete for playing time with Jordan.

Rose, a sophomore from White Sta-tion High School in Memphis, came onlate in the season last year and playedwell. Rose saw playing time in eightmatches and made his first collegiatestart against nationally-ranked St. Louis.

Senior Goran Larsson should pro-vide some experience for Bartels, while

1993 SEASON PREVIEW

freshmen Brian Redden of ChristianBrothersHighSchool in Memphis, JohnnyNeff of Bartlett and Robert Pepper ofBirmingham, England should round outthe defense.

At the midfield position, Bartels hasall sorts of possibilities. With the return ofco-captain Russell Church and Ohlmeier, filling the midfield positions will be one ofBartels easier tasks this year. Church, ajunior from South Africa, was the Tigers'fourth leading scorer last year, and Bartelsis counting on him to provide leadershipto the younger players.

"Anything can happen at midfield,"Bartels said. "I think we've got enoughdepth to survive the season."

Also returning at midfield are sopho-mores Philip McDonnell, Tommy Smith,Greg Gallina and Damon Davis. All fourplayed together on three consecutiveTennessee State championship teamsat CBHS in Memphis.

McDonnell started 13 of the Tigers'19 matches and while he did not score agoal, he showed great poise on and offthe ball. Smith played in 16 matches lastyear and had a goal and an assist. Davisstarted just two matches last year, butplayed in 12 and dished out two assists.Bartels is counting on these three toprovide consistency to the midfield

"If they can avoid the sophomoreslump, they should provide us with somegreat play in the middle,"said Bartels."They've played together so long in somany big games, I look for them to havea great year."

Bartels also looks fpr newcomersRobert Pepper, Fergal Ford and Neff tosee playing time in the middle. Pepperand Ford are from England and Ireland, respectively.

"They all have the tools to play at thislevel," Bartels said. "We just have to waitand see how well they adjust to the newstyle of play they will be facing."

One of the biggest questions of the1993 season is how fast can the Tigers

gel, both defensively, and up front. TheTigers don't have a returning starter atforward, but they do have senior DavidMorris of Memphis and junior BernardLicari, of Floriana, Malta.

"I think David will be the first to tellyou 1992 was an off year for him," Bartelssaid. "But this is his senior year, and Ithink he can have a great year in '93."

Norris played in 18 matches lastyear and tallied nine points. Despite tak-ing only eight shots on goal last year, hescored three goals, including a game-winner against Vanderbilt.

Licari is expected by Bartels to seesignificant playing time.

"Bernard got to work out with us lastyear but didn't get to play, and he's readyto get started," Bartels said. "He's a greattalent, and the problem we'll have isfinding someone that can match up withhim."

Licari was the top scorer for theMaltese National team, and he scored agoal against Ireland in the 1992 Olym-pics. While Bartels expects Norris andLicari to see most of the action, he fig-ures on another championship playerfrom CBHS to vie for playing time.

Sophomore Carter Fairley, the 1991Tennessee Player-of-the-Year, could seeaction in 1993. Though he did not seemuch playing time last year, Fairly playedwell when he did. Fairley saw action injust fourmatcheswhilecoming off recon-structive knee surgery. Hetookjustthreeshots but scored a goal against Cente-nary.

Tommy Smith, a sophomore fromCBHS in Memphis, could play forward ifthe need arises. According to Bartels, hehas the speed to soften up defenses.Nicknamed "the Jackhammer", he holdsthe MSU record for the quickfeet ma-chine in the Tiger weightroom.

171992 SEASON REVIEW

The crucial ingredients were all there:experience, talent, motivation and desire.Memphis State coach Chris Bartels neededonly to blend them properly for a winningconcoction, and he came up with a recipe forsuccess.

"With a very talented core of playersreturning and a good mixture of transfersand freshmen coming in, the only questionwould be "would the chemistry be right?"Bartels said.

Bartels expected a good year for histeam despite coming off a disappointing1991 season. MSU started '91 with an im-pressive 7-2-2 record, only to lose it's lastseven games andfinish at 7-9-2. In 1992,theTigers delivered on their promise and setseveral school records in the process.

MSU's 14 wins last year equalled theTiger's record settingl 986 season, the mostin a season. Their 14-3-2 record representsthe highest winning percentage (.789) everat MSU. By giving up only 16goals last year, the Tigers shattered the goals-allowed recordof 22 set in 1986, and with 11 shutouts, theybeat the 1986 record by three.

The Tigers were ateam of streaks in '92,ayear in whichtheyhadanine-game unbeat-en streak, the longest in MSU history. Theirfive-game unbeaten streak on the road wasalso the longest ever for a Tiger squad, andthe five consecutive home wins equalled the1986 record. They had two three-game shut-out streaks, where they outscored their op-ponents, 11-0.

Bartels winning combination included11 returning players and "the best" recruitingclass he said he's had. Seven of MSU's 18new players saw action in 14 or more of theTigers' 17 games. Transfers BrooksMonaghan, Thomas Ohlmeier and RussellChurch and freshman Philip McDonnell start-ed nearly all of the Tigers games and not onlyblended in well with the returning starters butbecame a large part of the Tigers' successlast year.

But the season belonged to the goal-keeper, Monaghan, whotransferedfromtheUniversity of Evansville to record all of MSU's11 shutouts. Monaghan was a top-10 goal-keeper nationally and rated as the top goalie

in the South region. He gave up only 16 goalsin 1992 and had a goals against average of0.80. At one point during the '92 season, hewas ranked fifth in the country with a GAA of0.50. Monaghan will likely eclipse the six-year-old career shutout record of 14 set byE.J. Gilley in 1983-1987.

"Monaghan was an A-1 keeper," Bartelssaid. "He played with an awful lot of confi-dence and he controled his area better thananyone I've ever seen. He doesn't acceptmediocre performances from either himselfor his teammates, and he's pretty vocalabout that."

Of course, Monaghan's teammatesweren't in the habit of turning in mediocreperformances.

Ohlmeier, a junior from Oldenburg,Germany, led the Tigers in assists and ad-vanced his game throughout the year tosco re sixgoals in the latter part of theseason.

"Thomas added maturity and experi-ence totheteam, and afterheadjustedto thecollege game he scored some good goals forus," Bartels said. "He had three game-win-ners late in the season when we really need-ed them, and you can't beat that."

Ohlmeier was second in team scoringfortheTigers behind seniorGarethO'Sullivan.O'Sullivan scored 12 goals last year to leadthe Tigers In scoring forthe third consecutiveseason even though hedrewthe most defen-sive pressure in nearly every game. SinceO'Sullivan's arrival at MS U, he started 57 outof 59 games.

"Gareth was a bit unlucky In 1992 in thathe has scored but 12 goals," Bartels said."But Gareth was dangerous and every teamknew that he was dangerous."

Junior Alan Redd, who moved from thedefender slot to forward last year, did atremendous job in relieving O'Sullivan fromsome of thepressurethathefaced during the1991 year when the Tigers played with onlyone true forward. With four goals last year,Redd was thethird leading goalscorerfortheTigers.

"There's another guy (Redd), who, witha little bit of luck and a little more concentra-tion, could have scored some more goals,"Bartels said. "But he did a good job for us,"

Page 19: 1993 Memphis Soccer Media Guide

1992 SEASON REVIEW 18The play at midfield also took much of

the pressure off O'SuIlivan. With Ohlmelerleading the way, fivedifferentTiger midfieldersaccounted for 16 of the 38 goals scored lastyear. Church, a sophomore transfer from1991 NAIA champion Boca Raton, scoredtwo goals and dished out three assists in1992.

Patrice Lhommeau, a midfielder fromles Sables D'olonne, France, started theyear hot but injured his ankle and missedmost of the season. Lhommeau came backto start the last game of the regular seasonand was ready for action in the conferencetournament where, he scored the Tigers'only goal against St. Louis in the GMWChampionship game.

Midfielders Clint Browne, a junior fromBirmingham, England, and David Morris ofMemphis scored two and three goals re-spectively. Brent Jordan, a junior from St.Louis, provided the Tigers with great midfieldplay while passing out two assists.

"With that kind of balance it makes ittough to pick on one man," Bartels said. "ButGareth was always going to be the markedman."

The Tigers' defense, which was led bythree seniors, was remarkable as well. FrankPileggi, Rick Morris and team leader ScottSpencer allowed only one team, St. Louis, more than 20 shots in a match. The Tigerslimited 10 of their opponents to 10 shots orless and 15 opponents to 15 shots or less.

"The defense was phenomenal," Bartelssaid. "Those three guys played together solongthattheyknew each other's every move. They played their hearts out on every ball."

The talent of the reserves was a decid-ing factor in several of MSU's victories. The1992 sqaud had a great deal of depth, andthe freshmen saw more playing time thanBartels had anticipated.

"I thought they would get a little playingtime here or there, but because of the inju-ries, to Patrice in particular, and a red cardhere orthere, they had to be thrown into thefire," Bartels said. "But when they got inthere, there was no letdown at all, sometimesthere was a surge."

McDonnell, a freshman from Christian

Brothers High School in Memphis, was a keyelement in thechampionshipdrive.Heplayedin all 17 matches and started in 13.

"McDonnell is pretty cool on the ball,"said Bartels. "He always made good deci-sions."

Twootherfreshmenwhosawsignificantamounts of playing time were Tommy Smithof CBHSandGeraldTumerof Harding Acad-emy in Memphis. While Smith did not start asingle match, he played in 16 matches andscored a goal in the final match of the regularseason.Turner started the final two matchesand played In 16 of the Tigers' 19 games. When Bartels needed speed he turned toSmith and Turner for tenacity on defense.

Justin Rose, a freshman from WhiteStation High School In Memphis, played Inseven matches and with only five minutes ofmatch experience against Alabama-Birming-ham, Rose made his first collegiate startagainst eth-ranked St. Louis University inplace of Brent Jordan who had to sit the gameout with a red card.

"Justin may be the back of the future,"Bartels said. "He had a great game againstCentenary and a good game against St.Louis." Bartels likes Rose's work ethic, say-ing he works hard for every ball and will getdown and do the dirty work for you.

Damon Davis, another freshman fromCBHS, saw action in 10 games and whileplaying out of his usual forward positionscored a goal and added two assists. Twomore freshmen, both from CBHS, scoredgoals for the Tigers. Despite playing in onlytwo matches, Greg Gallina scored his firstgoal as a Tiger just 30 seconds afterenteringa match for the first time. Carter Fairley, whoplayed in four matches, had a goal and anassist to tie Smith forthe honor of the highestscoring freshman In the talented class of1995.

37 GREAT MIDWEST CONFERENCE

Things like this are supposed to take time. But itdid not take much time for the Great Midwest Con-ference to make an impact on the national scene. The nation's newest NCAA Division I conference, the Great Midwest celebrated its first season bysending a pair of teams to the semifinals of an NCAAchampionship.

The St. Louis soccer team was the first GreatMidwest squad to make the run at a national title. After earning the inaugural conference soccer cham-pionship in November, the Billikens advanced all theway to the national semifinal game before losing toeventual champion Virginia in overtime.

Cincinnati's men's basketball team provided thesecond shot at a national title. The Bearcats claimedthe first men's basktball conference title en route toa run to the NCAA Final Four before falling toMichigan.

It should not be a surprise the Great Midwest metwith success. From its formation in November,1990, the six-member league has been tabbed withthe "cant miss" label.

"Wo Vo always known this was going to be a verygood conference," commissioner Mike Slivo said."What we had no way of knowing was how quicklyit would happen. Throughout our planning, we ex-pected that we would be a high quality athleticsconference. Having two teams reach the nationalsemifinals brought that recognition quickly.

"In turn, my job becomes easier. Ayear ago, whenI would meet someone, I would have to explain whatthe Great Midwest Conference was. No more. Now,there is a sense of recognition."

The Great Midwest could quickly be recognized ineven more sports. Overall, the conference sponsorschampionships in 15 sports. In addition to soccerand men's basketball, the championship sports arevolleyball, basketball, tennis, indoor track and field, outdoor track and Meld, cross country for womenalong with baseball, golf, tennis, indoor track andfield, outdoor track and field and cross country andrifiery for men.

This is more than a men's basketball confer-ence," Slivo said. "I'm very proud of the fact that wewere represented in postseason play in soccer, women's basketball and volleyball as well as men'sbasketball."

In fact, the Great Midwest earned its first auto-matic qualification in volleyball. The winner of the

1993 conference title gets a trip to the NCAA Cham-pionship.

There also was plenty of academic success. Oneconference athlete earned GTE Academic All-Ameri-can honors and another was honored on the districtlevel.

Academic success should continue. The GreatMidwest is committed to academic success for itsstudent athletes and maintains stringent guidelinesregarding initial and continuing eligibility.

Great Midwest institutions are more than athleticrivals. The league is developing an academic con-sortium to allow students enrolled in one institutionto attend one or more of the other five while earningcredit at the original institution. Consortium plansalso include avisiting lecture series coinciding withathletic contests.

Slivo, formerly a Chicago-based attorney whospecialized in sports law, sees more success on thehorizon.

"We had an exciting inaugural year, truly ashlningstart," he said. "But this is only the beginning. One ofthe great things about starting something new is thatyou can take all the best parts of the rest and mixthem together. That is happening with the GreatMidwest Conference.

"Obviously, when you call yourselves 'the great...', you have high expectations. WeVe alreadyachieved some of our expectations. Still, the best isyet to come."

Slive heads the conference offices, which arelocated in downtown Chicago. Under his direction, the conference developed a sound governancestructure under the direction of the league's presi-dents, which make up the Board of Directors. TheBoard of Directors meets four times annually and isthe body to which the commissioner reports.
