EDITORIALby Phil Stevens

Last Monday evening was a special night for the VAFAwith the first ever Vote Count evening where all sectionsgathered on the same night at the same venue forcounting of votes.

I feel that the idea of pre-counting the first 13 roundsplus the one and two votes for the last 5 rounds andactually calling the last 5 Best on Ground votes only forSection A to F was an unqualified success and gaveequal exposure to all sections .

As this was the first evening of its type I wouldappreciate feedback from those in attendance so thatwe can either plan for a similar type of night in the futureor revert back to the old style of vote count nights -keeping in mind that this special type of Vote Count nightwas planned to be a special event in this the CentenaryYear of the Association .

So any written or faxed feedback c/- The Editor (P.Stevens) would be very much appreciated .

Congratulations to the winners (listed below) . Fo rfurther information on how individuals from clubs polledplease contact club secretaries who have been providedwith all voting details .

A SECTIONby Adam Kenyon

REVIEWCollegians strode into the A Section Grand Fina l

when they defeated a gallant De La Salle by 14 pointslast Sunday.

Collegians got the jump on De La and from thatpoint on they kept De La chasing .

De La who trailed by 16 points at quarter time didhave the opportunity to be a bit closer but they wereunder pressure and failed to convert their chances .

Collegian veterans Stephen Mount and RickSchober were providing all the options up forward .

Collegians continued to setthe pace inthe secondterm but it was their turn to be inaccurate adding 2 goals7 behindsto goto the long break leading by 21 points.

Pat Mannix seemed to be the only forward lookin gdangerous but the midfield pressure applied byCollegians meant that his chances were not the resultof accurate disposal upfield .

Andrew Ronchi was doing well in the ruck for DeLa but his work was being sharked by Matt Galbraith,Mark Hibbins and Co .

In a fairly even third term both teams attackedrelentlessly.

Chris Campbell and Col McClounan gave it theirall for De La but Collegians certainly stuck to theirpressure game plan and extended their lead to 25points at 3/4 time.

Mount really was outstanding and despite the DeLa Salle last term revival he finished with a matchwinning 7 goals.

Many of the De La stars were well down on theirgame .

Peter Rennie, Brett Mahoney and Julian Maloneycan play far better than Sunday's performance.

Collegians slowed in the final term which hasbecome a dangerous trait and one that could createan upset on Grand Final day if it were to continue.

The strength of Collegians all over the ground wasbasically too much for De La Salle to hold . Every timethey covered one player another Collegian would bobup and create havoc .

It now remains for De La Salle to take stock andregroup as they prepare for battle against St Bernardswho have had a week's break .

PREVIEWToday's game should be an epic struggle . We all

know that De La are capable of a lot more than theyhave shown this year .

St Bernards play very much on emotion andcommitment .

With both teams desperate for a Grand Final berthwe can expect to see a bruising encounter today withbodies on the line and the ball being the objective .

In the first semi final St Bernards cleaned upHaileybu ry - Frank Dunell was absolutely inspirational

. . . . I , ---iL---

-- L. :-

St Bernards will look to him again to provide theleadership and experience that they will need to winthis one today.

Luke and Jason Gollant will be the main targets upforward and either or both of them can be dangerous .

Nick Mitchell seems to be out of touch and wit hGreig Wood suspended the `Bernards' may have torely on their running brigade to score a few goals .

Peter Rennie, And rew Mackintosh, Danny Smith ,John Tully will be the players asked to stop the StBernards forwards and on talent they should be ableto but on desire it will be an even match .

At the other end of thefield De La will be hoping thatNick Fraser, Pat Mannix, Sam Hunter and JulianMaloney will kick a winning score.

Apart from Dunell, Paul and Anthony Capes andFerdi Comito will carry the hopes of the St Bernardsdefence.

Across the midfield Chris Belleville, Mark Lowe andChris Campbell will take on Simon Walsh, RobPurcell and perhaps Corey Mallia . The De Lacombination are hard to beat in this area and at bestI can only see St Bernards breaking even with themacross the centre .

On the ball Wayne Carey should have a great duelwith Andrew Ronchi .

The ruck roving battle between Col McClounan andJulain Maloney who will be pitted against JackOverman and Gavin Keane could well decide theoutcome of this game .

At the fall of the ball Brett Mahoney and MorrisMastriani will be challenged by the talented and verymuch in form duo of Matt Mulkearns and Vin Comito .

On form St Bernards will control the roving tussle .So where are we now?De La has a forward line out of touch . St Bernards

are relying on two major forwards to kick their goals .De La have a better centre line but are currently down

in the roving department .All indicators saythatthis gameis bound to be close.Determination, concentration, discipline and

commitment will win this one.St Bernards are displaying more of this at the

moment but perhaps lack the experience of De LaSalle .

The conditions seem likely to favour St Bernards andI'm leaning their way in what should be a thriller.

St Bernards by 5 points .

At last Monday's Vote Count Night each section's leading goalkicker was presented with his National MutualTrustees Medallion for the number of goals kicked during the home and away season . The winners were as follows, with goals in brackets : A : Gary Petroff (53) Marcellin ; B : Adam Acreman (63) Old Mentonians ; C : Ralph Bergman(107) St Kilda; D: Mark Crawford (60) Hampton Rovers ; E : Dean DeMorton (93) North Brunswick ; F: Joseph Simundza(99) Old Essendon ; G No rth : Andrew Treganowan (76) Marcellin ; G South : Matthew Dalton (74) Old Xaverians ;U19/1 : Craig Bennie (71) Marcellin ; U19/Central : John Raywood (82) Ivanhoe ; U19/South : Wesley Douglass (110)Monash Blues .

A highlight of the Vote Count Night was the conduct of a LUCKY DRAW which saw one of the attendee's namedrawn from a barrel which won for the winner a night for two at the Radisson Hotel followed by complimentarybreakfast the following morning .

The winner was Mark Wilson from the Bulleen-Teplestowe club. Thanks to the Radisson for its suppo rt of the Association with a couple of functions over the past couple of years.

Congratulations to Old Brighton on their first ever promotion to A Section - a wonde rful achievement and I'msure that by their depth of talent they will be in A Section for a long time .

Other teams promoted to this stage are as follows : From C to B - Fawkner and Bulleen-Templestowe ; From Dto C - Caulfield Grammarians and Mazenod ; From E to D - Brunswick and North Brunswick ; From F to E - StLeo's Wattle Park and Old Essendon .

Last Thursday night 6 clubs from outside the Association were interviewed with a view to possible inclusion inF section 1993 .

The recommendations of the interviewing committee will be put to the Executive on Monday evening who willconsider possibly : (a) whether to add 4 clubs only to F section making 2 sections of 10 for 1993 ; or (b) whetherto add more than 4 clubs making perhaps 2 F sections of 12 clubs each .

Another consideration may beto reduce G section to a single section consisting of clubs who are a 3rd eighteenof an existing club, a new club to the association or an existing F section club battling with numbers which mayneed a year as a single team club to re-group .

Clubs in G section at the moment who are single team clubs who do not fit the above criteria may be askedto adjust to a 2 team F section club .

The above may be the subject of discussion at the Executive Seminar where all club submissions are consideredalong with the Executive's ideas.

B SECTIONby Tom Johnston

The opening of Saturday's B Grade second semi finalwas predictably intense and highlighted by scramblypatches of football and errors . Played in conditions bestdescribed as holding, both teams were committed tothe ball and body clashes were numerous. Thespectacle, as a result, was not great early, but clearlyshowed the importance of the game. Significant tacticalmoves saw Andrew Pryortagged by McAulay (A movewhich would continue for most of the day and in someways reflected the attitude of Old Melburnians - onthe back foot from the start) . Mark Parker opted to useNick Perry on the dangerous Scott Teal early . Thisduel proved to be very interesting .

Old Melburnians kicked against a slight breeze inthe first quarter and worked hard to create early chancesfor their forwards . Useinov missed a simple goal in theopening minutes, running into an open goal a lack ofconcentration saw the ball miss and an easy goal gomissing . But for this miss socres should have beenvirtually levelled at half time . Old Melburnains alsoplayed the quarter with a four man forward line, preferring to push extra men like Anastakis intodefence. Such a move would prove to benefit OldBrighton more than OM's. Constantly Melburniansusing their mark and kick game bombed the ball intotheir forward line only to meet a wall of Old Brightondefenders across their half forward line . Brightongained possession often and their running in linesshared the ball out of defence. Only poor delivery tothe leading Hayden combined with the efforts of TonyWitts in defence prevented Brighton from turningOM's unplanned and ill directed attacks into goals .There is little doubt in my mind that to match it with OldBrighton who workto create loose running options asafundamental element of their play you must man up .Furthermore Old Brighton were working hard to gainand hold front position. Teal was forced wide and a longway from goal for his kicks due to the lack of supportnear him . His long goal during thefirstterm was agreatexample of his personal talent and ability.

In the second quarter Old Brighton built on their leaddespite kicking against the breeze . Their ability to winthe ball out of the centre was a decisive factor in thisterm . Running into the wind in numbers they madetheplay and were continually committed to sharing the baliaround. In contrast OM's tended to bomb the bailindiscriminately relying on glimpses of spontaneousindividuality rather than the consistent team play ofOld Brighton . Jeremy Nichols' mark of the dayperfectly underlined this but such bursts of individualtalent were constantly negated by the continuoustackling and pressure of Old Brighton . On a numberof occasions Old Melburnians were forced to kickhurriedly without purpose - resulting in turnovers .

At the start of play I felt that Melburnians held theadvantaqe in the air but it was the marking strength of

&a

Old Brighton that was proving to be significant .Rickarby was leading the way in this department . Butfor a long goal from a near impossible angle by Salterafter the bell Old Melburnians could have been 20points down at the main break . Instead they still hadsome hope. The persistence of the Old Melburnianscoaching staff with a four pronged attack even with thebreeze had again proved advantageous to OldBrighton who ran in numbers to the midfield beforedelivering to their leading forwards.

The signs at half time were not good for OMs buttheycame out firing after half time slamming on two quickgoals . Any hope of a recovery was short lived however, when the possession game of Brighton began to linkfaltlessly and the accurate passing found Hayden orthe numerous options provided by the energeticBrighton forwards. The intensity, of the game had liftedbut Old Brighton's tackling was continuing to provideheadaches for Old Melburnians who compoundedtheir misfortune by failing to man up ieaving far too manyoptions for Old Brighton to exploit with short chip kicks.Mark Parker had obviously decided to go on the attackafter half time as he switched Nick Per ry to centre halfforward, a move that merely reflected the positiveattitude of Old Brighton throughout the day. Gameslike this need to be won and the team that makes theplay, takes the advantage and attacks benefits . OldMelburnians may well reflect on their decision to tagPryor, whilst it eliminated him from the contest it tookthe pressure off both Andrew Grant and Matt Talbotwhose creativity more than covered that of Pryors loss- you can't tag them all . The other significant factorwas the lack of drive from the OM's midfield Webb andMaskiel were both quiet for example .

At the 3/a time break Mark Parker reminded hisplayers that 7 months hard work was on the line andthat a place in the B Grade Grand Final and A Gradewas near at hand . Paul O'Brien on the other handcould only plead with his players to try anything .

The last quarter, marred by rain, would see OldMelburnians finish as they had played throughout theday - without much system or pattern . Brightoncontinued on their way and their slick ball handling andclever delivery to leading forwards was a feature . Theymust now be favoured to take out the B Grade flag .

Old Melburnians on the other hand must re-examine their goals. Do they really want another chanceat winning the B Grade pennant and thereby gainingpromotion? It would seem to many that they may bea little unsure and hesitant . They have 7 days to recoverand refocus - re-establishing a system that will suit theirstructure .

I would not discount them yet as they are capableof anything and their year to date has seen many highsand lows . However, I believe Old Trinity having had a

i

week's break have more incentive and desire to achievethe goal they narrowly missed in 1991 . Doubtsconcerning the fitness of Nichols and A Wilts plus abelief that Old Trinity have better options up forwardand a midfield in top form lead me to believe they canwin . Old Melburnians rely heavily on Scott Teal andtheir midfield too, others must now accept the challengeand take the game up to Old Trinity ,

Well done Bulleen/Templestowe on winning yourway to'B' Section in'93 and in doing so earning anothercrack at your nemesis Fawkner in today's Grand Final .Commiserations to Commbank who now have torejuvinate themselves over the off-season and launchthemselves towards the higher grade with an evenbigger effort on and off field in '93. Congratulationsalso to Uni Blacks who won their way through to theReserves Grand Final with a hard slogging affair overMHSOB's . The 'Schoolers were hoping to getsomething out of the year but alas, all to no avail .REVIEW ( PRELIM . FINAL, 5/9/92) Bulleen/Temp.vs Commbank .

1st Qtr - The BT's opened up brightly with manyscoring opportunities but all resulted in minors . Theirfirst major came some 10 minutes into the quarter afterthe Bankers had evened up the scoreline with their ownbout of inaccuracy. Even this early in the game it wasquite evident that the game would reduce itself to a reallyslogging affair. Bankers couldn't trouble the scoreboardman with a goal but Bulleen/Temp . helped themselvesto another `twin' just short of siren time to .go in handyleaders at qtr time by 15 points.

2nd Qtr - The breeze came up, the rain came downand the Bankers lit up. Whilst it took 10 minutes or soto register their 1st goal for the qtr (and the game) they(Bankers) were beginning to play much the better teamfootball . Linking up, Running and Centre CorridorFooty transformed them into a much more competitiveunit . The 'Bullants' though were able to slip an easygoal through the Banks defence after a great smotheroff a defender's boot . Back to square one at the 15minute mark . All of a sudden the Banks' hard workstarted to pay dividends up forward where players wereprepared to lead, get in fro nt and kick with authority.Into time-on the Bankers had a chance to slip away toa healthy lead but to the credit of the BT's were heldto the slender leading margin of 2 points at the longinterval .

3rd Qtr - Conditions had now settled, no breeze orrain to mention, this however, was to be the calm beforethe storm . A real slog for the 1st 10 minutes then theBankers controlled play for the next 10 but try as theymight couldn't penetrate the 'Bullants' defence for amajor. Plenty of minors but these were from kicks toofar out or snaps off impossible angles . Next thing youknow the game changes dramatically and the BT's arein full flight, command the game, slot through, goajafter goal and the horse has just about-bolted . Howquick a game changes . Come 3/4 time and the Bullantsheld a commanding 16 point margin.

4th Qtr- Down came the 'heavens', hail and all andwith it sank any hopes the Bankers may have had .Realistically, in the conditions something around a 7pt lead would, have been sufficient iet alone the 16 ptadvantage. The stable door was all hut shut and to mak

e sure of it the `Bull, ants' attacked relentlessly'o do al lthescoring of the qtr a[ d run out (o r swina) easy ~,:-i nnersby 29,pts.-8

PREVIEW ( GRAND FINAL) 12 SEPTEMBER 1992RESERVES - FAWKNER vs UNI BLACKS

A tip-top game is assured here between clearly the2 very best teams the competition has thrown up thisseason . Uni Blacks all but did a 20 goal turnaroundin the 2nd semi final to go down by 3 majors . The result, whilst giving 'Blacks' some confidence, gave the'Fawks' a distinct psychological advantage and a wellearned week's rest from the rigours of a very hard slogin the Prelim . Final conditions . I'm sure the 'Blacks'will equip themselves well but I've got to select the'Northerners' on the basis of facts, figu re s and formto hold the 'Premiership' cup alogt by 23 points .

SENIORS - FAWKNER vs BULLEEN/TEMP.Very much the same sort of theories surround this

game as in the 'Rezzies' encounter. BuUeen/Temp.are most definitely in the game with a chance of an upsetvictory, certainly improved if Elsternwick Park issubjected to inclement weather through the week. Theclass factor of Fawkner would be substantially reducedgiven these conditions, on the other hand the BT's growanother leg and do a'Van-Der-Hum'.

I pen this articule in the belief that the weather won'tbe a factor and that the 'Park' will be in fine fettle . Onthis basis alone I give the ' nod' to the' Fawks' who havean abundance of players that the 'Bullants' will haveto cope with . Some they might, others they won't andmore still will 'bob' up to help out .

With or without T. Young the Fawkner engine roomlooks more efficient and their defence looks up tohandling the `Bullants' given that the ball gets downthere often enough to give them a'sweat' . Up forwardfor Fawkner an array of players can 'chip' in for a hauland it's going to take a super effort by the BT'sdefenders to hold them to a low enough scoreline toallow their own forwards an opportunity to outscore .Hypothetically, if midfield, attack and defence zonesare negated or break even then the on-ball factor ofFawkner is surely enough to tip the scales in favourof them . D SECTIONby Peter Lemon

Congratulations to the Mazenod Club which lastweek added another two premierships to their doublesof 1989 and '91 . The Firsts grand final was easily thebest game of the series : strong second halfperformance, but wayward kicking up forward wasperhaps their undoing .

The first quarter was even and of a high standard ;both teams had telling forwards, with Noble already onthe wayto a match winning performance, and Mathewskicking early goals for the Fields. The second saw theNoddies gain the initiative ; their tackling was relentlessand the Fields struggled to establish their pacey, run-on game. With a deficit of 21 points at the break theylooked in great trouble, especially as the Noddiesrunners in the form of Mannix, Rogers, Dom . Barkerand Marshall had clearly gained the ascendancy .

The third term saw Caulfield fight back strongly, withtheir on-ball players such as Trevor Royals gainingmore use of the ball ; they lifted their work rate and weredoubtless aided by a Mazenod'send off' for 15 minutes .However, the results on the board had their supporterswincing - 3 goals 9 for the quarter was a disastrousreturn for effort, and the stuff of nightmares for yearsto come.

The final term was a thriller with the lead changinga number of times. Caulfield had a number of chances, but managed mainly points - or nothing at all . (Fourposters in the second half did little to help the cause) .The Noddies struck back, and despite magnificentdefensive work from Clinton Simpson on a numberof occasions, Caulfield eventually went under. It washere that the finals experience of Mazenod counted ;they were cool when it counted most, whilst a coupleof Field's errors under pressure were costly. Eventually, into time on, Murray goaled on the run forthe Noddiesand the Premiership was theirs .

For Caulfield Grammarians, there's little consolationin knowing that they contributed to a fine game offootball : their endeavour lacked nothing, but 5 goalsfrom 20 scoring shots in the second half underscoredthe truth of the statement - that bad kicking is badfootball . For Mazenod, it was another triumph andanother step in the seemingly relentless progress to thehighest sections of the VAFA .

Rese rves : It's hard to believe from the final scorethat this match was level at half time. After that, M azenodtotally and utterly dominated proceedings, booting acasual nine goals tojust about nothing in thethird . TheHoes were outclassed all over the ground (not that itgot into their forward line on more than a couple ofoccasions), and were beaten, in their own words, bya 'remarkably skilled unit'.

F -TROOPby "Stand-In"

Hello F •.rroopers, to the last report this weekend with OldEssendon holding off a fast finishing Carey to win bythe slenderest of margins 1 pt. Congrats go to OldEssendon for being promoted to E Grade for season1993 . I have put together my F Grade superteam sidewhich I think will cause a lot of controversy. Alsocongratulations go to J. Jackson of W. Brunswick forwinning the F Grade B&F and to S. McMahon on beingrunner-up, back luck Macca . Anyway don't forget theGala Grand Final Breakfast at the Prahran Town Hallon Sunday 20th September, there are still plenty oftickets available. Well to all my avid readers I sayfarewellto all and I promise I will practice my umpiring betweennow and April .

REVIEWSENIORS : In probably the best game I have seen fora few years Old Essendon outlasted Old Carey to wi nby a solitary point . Going into the last quarter an injurydepleted Old Es had a comfortable 4 goal advantageat the 10 minute mark only to see Old Ca rey rally toget within 2 pts with about 5 minutes to go. Carey gotthe ball down to their forward line where Hickey hadan open goal to put Ca rey in front but he missed from5 metres out and had he kicked it, it would certainly havebeen curtains for Old Es. Commiserations go to OldCa rey and don't worry they will be back again next year, bigger and better.

RESERVES : Sambo's Sailors held of St Leo's by 7ptsto advance to the Grand Final to set up a clash withSt Pat's Mentone .

PREVIEWSENIORS : It's Grand Final time and I feel St Leo's willhave too many guns for Old Essendon and shoulddo it easily by 10 goals. After watching last week it's hardto see Old E's getting u p to beat St Leo's who will havefresher legs. All I can say is, good luck to both sidesbut as I said before St Leo's easily.

RESERVES : After speaking to both coaches and StPat's having the week off I feel they will have too muchtalent for Peninsula and should get home by 4 goalsin a hard-slogging affair.

First thing to acknowledge this week are the winnersof the individual awards for this season . The goalkickingwinners were Craig Bennie, Marcellin (Div. One) ; JohnRaywood, Ivanhoe (Div. 2 Central) and WesDouglass, Monash (Div. 2 South) . Best and Fairestwinners were Danny Kogler, Old Melb . ( Div. 1) ; SamHorskins, Old C'Well (Div. 2 Central) and AndrewMcLean, Old Brighton (Div. 2 South).

Congratulations also to Steve Rust and his boys atMonash for their fantastic performance in winning theVicHealth Discipline Award with an incredibleaverage score of 8.8 out of 10 per game. A specialcongratulations also to Johnny'Red' Harper who gothis Rovers into second place in only his first year ofcoaching .

REVIEW OF LAST WEEK'S GAMESDIVISION 1 - 2ND SEMI FINAL

This was undoubtedly the best wet weather contestI have ever seen between two U19 teams . Both Xavsand De La were totally committed to getting in andgetting the hard ball and must be commended for theirefforts. The first half was pretty even with the onlydifference being the early goal that Xavs got before therain started . The 3rd quarter saw De La repeatedlyhaving the ball on their forward line but they wererewarded with only 2 goals whilst Xavs made more ofless chances and booted 4 goals . There were 2highlights for Xavs in this term one being the`Maradonna' goal by Tucker and the other being theoutstanding solo running, tackling, recovering effort byStewa rt Barlow which resulted in a Xavs goal late inthe 1/4 . Chris Lester, Julian Taylor and Paul Clancywere just 3 of D's great triers whilst, from a very evencommitted Xavs line-up, I thought they were best servedby Luke Fray, Stew Barlow, Michael Dillon and theirinspirational skipper Andrew Egan .

DIVISION 2 CENTRAL - PRELIMINARY FINALI saw the first half of this game and, whilst not wanting

to discredit Uni, I was pleased to see Wells bounceback and show the form that put them in top spot duringthe season . Sam Horskins really inspired Wells withsome great goals in the first half while Andrew Cocksreturned to form with a great effort at full back againsthis giant opponents . Richie Dodds was Blues onlyforward while I was there and ended up kicking half adozen, however, I don't think he is likelyto join the `DonalU' Fan Club after their 'meeting' in the first quarter.Tippett was another goer for the Blues whilst BenTaylor was a great leader for the Wells .

DIVISION 2 SOUTH - PRELIMINARY FINA LMy confidence in tipping High as winners 2 weeks

in a row was shattered when they fell away in the secondhalf and allowed Parkers to get home by 5 goals . Allof Parkers big guns fired and this was too much for theboys on High's backline. 'Pembo' was back to his best

as were Pedler, Spirli, Paola, Simmonds and Vinniebooted another 4 to move to 92 for the year. High werebest served by David Harris who booted 4 and AdamHoward and Paul Barge . Good to see Jeremy Goldinback in action and playing well after his 'setback' theweek before. Peter Fountas with only 1 goal was left3 short of the ton - bad luck Peter.

PREVIEW OF TODAY'S GAMESDIVISION 1 - PRELIMINARY FINA L

I'd like to have an each way bet on this game todaydependent on weather conditions. After seeing theirgreat endeavour in the wet last week, I'm pretty surethe D's can win in heavy conditions but not so sure ifthey can roll OM's in the dry. OM's have been hit cruellywith late injuries to Jock Campbell and 'Jobbers' whilstD's should be at full strength if not a little leg weary fromlast week's encounter. OM's are strong where the D'sare weak - the forward line. 'Branch', Theodore andThompson are 3 of the top 5 goalkickers in the comp .whilst backman 'Sheeds' kicked 2 of D's 3 goals lastweek . I'm confident OM's can kick a winning scoretoday but I'm not so sure that their defence can holdD's down to a lower score than theirs . I was impressedby D's commitment last week and I'll go for them to justedge OM'sout. Besides I couldn't face'Tubey's' mumcomfortably if I tip OM's and they lose.

DIVISION 2 CENTRAL - GRAND FINA LThis is a replay of the 2nd Semi but I'm sure we'll see

a much closer contest. C'Well really toughed it out lastweek to come from behind whilst the Roys benefittedfrom the week's rest . Wells' on ballers gave them greatdrive last week and will need a repeat performancetoday to have any chance. Therry's backline was verystrong last time and generated a lot of run and driveto the forwards where they will hope that `Gilly' kicksthe ball rather than stabbing at it . I think Therry havea little too much class to let this slip away from themalthough they have to control their tendency to be overconfident and must be sure their discipline doesn't letthem down . Therry by 20 points.

DIVISION 2 SOUTH - GRAND FINA LJackers and Chirnside have held top spots for

nearly all the season and deserve the right to play offtoday in another 2nd semi replay. This will be their 3rdencounter in the last 6 weeks with Jackers winning the2 previous outings although pressed in the semi final .Parkers will miss'Pembo' who is unavailable today andeven though Michael thinks he can cover for him, I'mnot so sure. Jackers are a pretty even methodical teamwho don't rely on any individuals fortheir drive. As muchas it would be good to see Brendan, Don and all thehard workers at Chimside rewarded fortheir efforts witha flag I think it will be the Jackers who will pop thechampers corks tonight. Jackers by 10 points.

Would it be the firsttime it had beenJone for the 'B' Section grand finalists to make it nextyear to the 'A' Section grand final? Tipsters Ross Boothand PeterFrench thought Paradians would be thereand so continued on their shocking record of finalstippings.

At half time it looked as if the boys may be right . Afteran even first quarter, two goals apiece, Parade playeda magnificent second quarter, kicking 6 goals in 17minutes, with 5 coming from the boot of forward,Michael Skerritt, and led by 28 points at half time .Centre half back Dale McCann, rover Frank Gleesonand forward Ted Flynn had all been prominent forParade while Ormond had struggled.

It was a magnificent third quarter by Ormond . CoachMcArthur-Allen made some significant changes -Paul Sutherland totheforward line, Brad Nash on theball - they each kicked 3 in the 2nd half, and full forwardPaul Schuhkraft got 6 to make it 87 for the season .

Parade were magnificent in defeat. They came backstrongly for 6 goals in the final term, only to be matchedby Ormond with the same number.

First gamer Lindsay McMahon was magnificent inthe ruck for Ormond and other best players were Nash,Schuhkraft, Cox, Sutherland and Tobin . It was hardto see how they left out Phil Meh rten and PhilKingston .

Mehrten was reported in the final term and, it wouldbe a long time to Tribunal night for the Mondssupporters. Gleeson, Broad, Woods, Skerrit, Grillsand Canavan were Parade's best.

In `B' Section the Executive were very worried at thelast change that it would be another draw. A prodigiousgoal by John Pearson and then one of the biggestgoals ever at Elsternwick Park by Greg Wood madethe game a certainty for St Bernard's. Sullivan,Nathan, O'Dea, Hogan, Comito, Federico (St B's)and Flaherty, Reddick, Quinn, Ratcliffe, Gibson,Matton (Therry) were best.

After 29 years as a player and official, 240 gamesand President from 1972to 1987, Elsternwick's presidentGraham Holmes had decided to step down . A specialpresentation was made to Graham at the club's TrophyNight .

10 YEARS AGO - 1982Goal umpi re Ralph Bridges waved the flags for his

350th VAFA game. De La Salle's strong second halfdominated by their small brigade, saw No rth Old Boysdefeated 15 .13 to 10.17 .

Best were Maher (4 goals), Williams, McDonnell,Bourke, Frenetic, Greene (De La Salle) and Walsh,Griffin, O'Rourke, Clark, Conti, Ryan (North OldBoys)./.a -uc eunTEUR FOOTBALLER 1992

No rt h Old Boys went on to annihilate Marcellin inthe preliminary final, leading 14.9 to 1 .6 at half time, withfinal scores 19 .16 to 8.12 . Stars were Griffin, S. Weir,Borchich, O'Rourke (No rth Old Boys) and Cain,Ebert, Howard (Marcellin) .

In 'C' Old Camberwell took out the flag when theyrepeated their semi-final win against Coburg to win justas convincingly 17.20 to 11 .7 with the best playersRogers, Hackett, D. Steven (Old Camberwell) andPurcell, N . McAuliffe, Peck ( Coburg) .

Parkside beat St Pius for the third time to win 'D'premiership. B . Clark, Arnold, Heaver, Bastow (8goals) would go down in Parkside's history asthe grandfinal stars .

Traditional rivals Therry and Banyule staged atypical encounter for the E Section flag -a close gameall day, the lead changing frequently, and Therryproving too strong in the final term kicking 5.4 to 2 .1to t iumph 16 .6 to 14 .10. Best were White, Whyley,McMahon, Weir, Biddlestone, Chetecuti (Therry)and Ladd, Taylor, Power, Fraumano, Foster,McKenzie (Banyule) .

The match was obviously very fiery - 5 Banyuleplayers were reported and suspended for a total of 24weeks while two Therry players were reported for oneweek's suspension .

The closest grand final Bulleen United beatPeninsula Old Boys by 7 points, 14,8(102) to 13 .17(95) .Morley, Viney, Anderson ( Bulleen United) andWiltshire, Doyle, Horne ( Peninsula Old Boys) starred .Junior premiers were Bulleen Templestowe, Ivanhoeand Fawkner.

15 YEARS AGO - 1977De La Salle staged a real form reversal to annihilate

St Bernard's O.C. and go into the grand final againstNo rt h Old Boys .

!n'B' Section, Ivanhoe scraped home by one pointfrom Reservoir Old Boys in a see-saw game in whichthe teams were never more than 10 points apart .Fawkner proved their supremacy for the season in 'C'with a 29 point win over Parkside in a high scoringgame, 20.21 to 17.10 . Best were Richardson, Quinnell,Foley ( Fawkner) and Howell, Felle, Wilson(Parkside).

Other grand final winners were ' D' Old Brighton24.13 to Alphington 14 .11, 'E' Heatherton 17.13 toWest Brunswick 8.16, 'F' St Bedes' O.C. 12 .16 toBulleen Templestowe 12 .14, Junior 1 St Bernard's20.13 to Ivanhoe 12 .16 and Junior 2 Hampton Rovers20.16 to Geelong 18.17.

The Association bid farewell to George McTagge rt ,editor of the Amateur Footballer for close on 30 years, who was retiring from the Titles Office in October to gooverseas with his family for two years . (He came backbetter and bigger than ever, N .R .) .

20 YEARS AGO - 197 2Parade's shocking inaccuracy, 3 .14 to half time

against Caulfield Grammarians 6.7 almost cost themthe game which really went their way when they kickedfour goals in as many minutes in the third term to goon to an easy victory.

A great performance by Parade who had won the'B' Section premiership in 1971 and would now meet1971 'A' Section premiers, Ormond in the grand final .In 'B' Section University Blacks contributed to theirdefeat with poor shooting 11 .22 while Ivanhoe kicked18.10 to earn the right to meet Geelong in the'B' Sectiongrand final .

I reland, Hughes, Dickson ( Ivanhoe) and Baiter,MacCallum, A . Costello ( Blacks) were best .

Rese rvoir shocked Assumption with 10 .4 to 1 .1 i nthe second quarter to go on a win the 'C' Sectionpremiership and retain their unbeaten record .

Devlin, Bates, R . Shepherd (Reservoir) and Lewis,Du ro, Phillips (Assumption) were best .

Parkside with a 1 point win over Old Brightongained the 'D' Section premiership, Ridd, Sammut,Graham, D ryden (Parkside) and Watkins, Mullett,Templeton (Old Brighton) were best .

25 YEARS AGO - 196 7Caulfield Grammarians (14 .12) defeated

COACHES CLIPBOARDedited by

Mike McArthur-Allen

THE AUSSIE COAC Hby Simon Meehan - Senior Coach, Old Haileybury

Australian Rules Football was devised in 1858 by two we may hear will be the direction all require for automati c

crickerters, Thomas Wills and Henry Harrison . It wasdevised with the aim of inventing a form of football whichwould provide cricketers with healthy exercise duringthe off-season . Wills and Harrison developed thisformof football dismissing Rugby and Soccer with theiremphasis being on running and ball-handling . Thegame proved an immediate success and as we knowtoday is a'religion' among the southern states .

As a coach, I make the rules and set the strategiesfor my side. All coaches dothis and hence we can lookat Wills and Harrison as the first coaches of our code .From the time these two men initiated our game, coaches have been manipulating people and devisingmoves to succeed in our game. We read articles andlisten tothe'gurus' words of wisdom, hoping that what

success.Below is some notes I wrote for myself in 1986 when

applying for the coaching job at St Kilda C.B.C. they maybe of some interest to my fellow VAFA Coaches andaspiring coaches of the future. Just as a matter of fact,I missed out on the job .

• The club must be together with a definite aim .• The coach must be buddy and teacher to all

players .• The coach must give players faith in himself, the

club and themselves . Make sure enthusiasm is at its

utmost .• Bring mature and past players back to the club to

give support to teams, committee and club members .continued next page ®

COMPULSORY LEVEL 1 FOR ALL SENIOR COACHE SFrom 1993 ALL Senior Coaches in the VAFA must have at least LEVEL 1 ACCREDITATION and from

1994 the same situation will extend to Assistant and Reserve Coaches. Also, ALL Under 19 Coaches must

continue to have Level 1 Accreditation as has been the case for the past 3 years .This decision was made at the VAFA Executive Seminar last November and this directive was sent to

ALL VAFA Club Secretaries in December in the Christmas memo .Therefore there will be a big demand for Level 1 Courses before next season . A course is avaiable on

Sat/Sun 17th-18th October, 1992 at the Royal Melbourne Showgrounds. Application forms are available

from VAFA Headquarters by ringing 531 8333 . GET IN EARLY.

• Want outsiders.• Develop the junior base, so as they want to play

football for the club.• All players must be able to come and talk to the

coach at anytime with questions relating to their positionin the team and the club.

• Also the coach must be able to talk to his players

when guidance is needed or confidence needs to bere-assured .

• A coach must never coach a team all the same .• Each person has a different personality with

different weaknesses and strengths .• A good coach is one who knows all these and can

react to help - not damage .
