at the bonfire to

support their team.

The second annual

bonfire, sponsored

by the Varsity

Cheerleaders,kicked off this

year's homecoming

festivities.

Sparked by

school spirit, fans

cheered wildly in

hope of a Titan vic-

tory. Coach Mike

Kell delivered a pep

talk that "pumped

up" his team for

the big game.

Inspired by

his talk, the foot-

ball players hoisted

a dummy into the

air and hurled it

into the fiery heap.

The crowd burst

with excitement as

the dummy with-

ered into ashes. The

bonfire setthe mood

for the memory-

filledweek end that

lay ahead.

Rhonda Chapo

My advice to the underclass-

men is to never forget your

goals and dreams. Do ev-

erything you can to achieve

them. I best remember win-

ning the SoftballNews Herald

tournament and two basket-

ball district titles. I plan to go

to U ofM to study aeronau ti-

cal engineering.

Aimee Dallos

My advice is to work hard

early in high school so you

can enjoy your senior year. I

remember when the hockey

team won States. It was the

most school spirit I've seen in

a long time and it was excit-

ing to be a part of it. 1 plan to

go to MSU to study physical

therapy.

Carrie Hinson

My advice is to hang in there

and never doubt your ability to

succeed. My most memorable

experience was getting locked

out of a theater with Kristie

Gutowski during a Spanish field

trip. I plan to attend MSU to

pursue studies in physical

therapy.

Philip Hoener

My advice is to never worry about

what people think of you. I re-

member performing a song I wrote

iind dedicated to the Class of 92 at

Band-A-Rama. 1 plan to graduate

from college and become "Impe-

rial Grand Emporer" of the uni-

verse. If not, then I'll become a

wanderer, playing my guitar in a

bar until someone kills me for

taking his beer nuts!

Matthew Diroff

My advice is to take advan-

tage of all nine absences, but

don't usethemup too quickly.

My most memorable experi-

ence was beating Durand for

the first time ever. I plan

graduate from college with a

degree in music. Then, I plan

to teach a marching band that

beats Rob Hcckman's band.

Danielle Fletcher

My advice is don't use the

excuse "1 have a whole year

ahead of me." Your sr. year

goes too quick. I remember

when Dave Kinney fell off

the stage in Mr. Pinkowski's

class. If we'd had a camera,

we'd be $10,000 richer. Iplan

to study medicine and be-

come a pathologist.

Carrie Hawthorne

My advice is to have fun and

strive to achieve your goals.

I best remember beating

Riverview at tennis during

theMelluslnvitiational. The

match lasted for three hours

and went into three sets. 1

plan to attend MSU and

major in prc-vct medicine.

David Kinney

My advice is to work to your

fullest potential. You have your

whole life ahead of you so start

preparing now! My most

memorable moment was when I

almost died in one of Eric Hood's

"Stud Van" missions. I plan to

attend GMl, majoring in electri-

cal engineering and minoring in

business management.

Julie Kremer

My advice is to have fun now

because these are the best years

of your lives. My most memo-

rable moment was when Dave

Kinney fell off the stage in Mr.

Pinkowski'sclass. I plantoattend

U of M and then go on to law

school. Eventually, I hope to

have a large comer office in a

major law firm.

Paul Lulgjuraj

My advice is to enjoy your se-

nior year as much as possible

because it flies by. My best

memory was my first varsity

basketball game against

Riverview when I scored 24

points, 16 in the last four min-

utes. 1 plan to attend U of M to

study aeronautical engineering.



Jennifer Marek

My advice is to share special

timeswith your fricndsand plan

for the future because it's not so

far away. My best memory is

Junior Prom. It was a fun and

beautiful memory. I plan to at-

tend MSU to study biomedical

engineering.

Osama Muzher

My advice is to keep striving for

your goals but make time for

fun, too. My best memory is

winning the drumline state

championship. 1 plan to get a

degree in mechanical engineer-

ing and be on the cover of Time

as the Renaissance engineer of

the Century, responsible for

putting foreign cars to shame.

Aaron Schurg

My advice is to be patient. My

most embarrassing moment

was when 1 ate some pretty

good chemicals in my ad-

\ anced chemistry class. 1 plan

to attend MSU or U of M , get

a degree in engineering, be-

come a billionaire, and even-

tually buy Rhode Island to

retire at.

Roxanne Smith

My advice is that if you have

a dream, go for it and don't

settle for less. My best

memory was when the band

went to Florida and Erin

Mahancy dressed up like the

Frito-Lay Budda. I plan to

attend Sienna Heights to

study Medicine, Biology, or

Chemistry.

Meghan O'Keefe

My advice is to have fun while

in high school, but don't forget

why you're here. My most

memorable moment is yet to

come. . . graduation! 1 plan to

attend U of M and get a degree

in civil and environmental engi-

neering.

Molly Robertson

My most memorable moment

was this year when the band

went to Florida and

Disneyworld, and a bird

pooped on my head. I plan to

attend MSU and receive a de-

gree in biochemistry.

Brian Russell

My advice is to get involved

while in school. I remember

when we went to Florida. Toby

Darren, Mike, and 1 called Molly,

Nikki, and Liz and played taps

forthem with plastic instruments.

(I guess you had to be there.) 1

plan to attend U of M to study

aerospace engineering.

Michael Shriver

My advice is that no matter

how life seems now, look to the

future. My most embarrassing

moment was during a play

performance in 11 th grade.

When it seemed like nothing

could go wrong, my fake

moustache fell off and onto the

floor. If not at my humor, the

audience certainly laughed at

that.

Dana Volpini

My advice is to treasure the

time you have in high school

and with friends. My most

memorable moment was

winning the state title for

hockey. I also remember a lot

of fun times in track and

marching band. In the fall, I

am moving to California and

attending college out there.

Paul Witt

My advice is to study hard

and have as much fun as

possible. My most memorable

moment was being on the

hockey team when we won

sta tcs and being section leader

when the drumline won states.

1 plan to go to college and get

a high paying job so 1 can re-

tire at age 35.

Another SuccessBand-a-Rama has grown suc-

cessfully over the years to include

dancing, skits, and special goups,

such as Jazz Band. The 1991

show was no exception. Included

in this year's Band-a-Rama were

dances by the senior and junior

girls, band camp skits "King Tut"

and "Russian Bandstand," songs

by Molly Robertson and Phil

Hoener, and a special performance

by our state championship

drumline! The Masters of Cer-

emony, Mark and Jack, entertained

the crowd with their unusual array

of bad jokes as the band's new

uniforms were spotlighted. The

band performed music from their

marching show such as Selections

from Swan Lake, Snow Pine For-

est, and the Finale from Symphony

Number 6.

The 1991 season was one of the best for

the AHS Color Guard. The dedication and

enthusiasm of all the girls paid off greatly.

Steve Ryan Instructed at band camp andput more than a great deal of creativity into

the show. Cammie MacDonald, well-known

among the color guard and bass drum line.

Instructed for the rest of the season. With

help from Alecla Burns and co-captain Liz

Ray, their scores Increased quickly. Every-

one was proud of the results and of the

outstanding season.

They went undefeated and captured

Anderson's first drum line state title,

in Plymouth, on October 25, 1991.Their score of 9.5, (out of 10), wasone of the highest in state history,

Parading (Down

Main Street

The AHS marching band took a short,

but memorable vacation to sunny Florida

during the cold Christmas break. On

New Year's Eve, the band had a big New

Year's party and started the New Year

with a march down Main Street, in the

Magic Kingdom, for their annual parade.

Thousands of people were taking pic-

tures of our band.

The trip also included a visit to Epcot

Center and Daytona beach. This isn't

the first time the band has marched at

Disney and hopefully it won't be the last.

The trip will bring back some great

memories for everyone in years to come.

Southgate, Michigan, the Anderson March-

ing Band always impresses the audience

with its precision and musical skill.

Posed with the question, "Who will be the next

Mr. Anderson," excited audience members

cheered on the finest Southgate Anderson

has to offer. The contestants presented quite a

show as they competed in the talent, best buns,

and question /answer categories. Theevening,

sponsored by the baseball club, was led by

emcees Jason Bentley, Danielle Durwoed,

Michelle Milspaugh, and Enza Vitale. In the

end, Kevin Keating was crowned the 1991-92

Mr. Anderson. Runners up were Shawn Sage

and Ken Johnson, m m

CONGRESSThe Senior Class

has been very busy this

year. With the pressures

ofgraduation and college,

they still tried to stay as

involved as possible. They

have planned the prom,

as well as class colors,

songs, flowers, and voted

on the "Who's Who."

been on the go all year long.

Finding outhow expensive

things really are was a les-

son the juniors had to deal

with. However, their con-

stant involvement with

fundraisers brought them

out of the slump and pre-

pared them for their senior

high school, they have

ticipated in Drama this

year, we reached a pin-

nacle of talent. Perform-

ers from all classes illus-

trated their abilities in this

year's play. With

fundraisers, they earned

enough money to buy

some new equipment for

the auditorium and take a

trip. We also helped

young Davidson thespi-

ans with a small produc-

tion.



On December 19, 1991, the

students of Southgate Anderson

High School came out in full force

to give the most meaningful gift

. . blood. Sponsored by the Stu-

dent Council, the blood drive

drew both teachers and students

who were willing to give a bit of

themselves to save others. Ev-

eryone displayed a lot of gener-

osity and concern as they do-

nated blood to the American RedCross to help people.

studio of TV-35. Anderson is one of the few

fortunate schools to offer a class in the pro-

duction of television video.

Students are excited to learn the ba-

sics of television production and what it is

The ambitious Burgandy &Silver Press has encountered and

dealt with many subjects this year.

Some of those subjects include AIDS,

athletics, and improving attitudes of

the student body. At the same time,

they strived to reach the goal of

delivering information and entertain-

ment to the students of AHS.During the course of the year,

the paper's quality was improved by

adding color printing and various

graphics, causing an increase in price.

However, the students were more

than willing to pay it so that they

could keep up with the latest hap-

penings in school.

ACADEMICSThings have changed from the time

when our parents went to school. If they

were to walk through the halls today, many

would be shocked at how Southgate has

changed- for better and for worse. Those

long, agonizmg, essay question tests and the

days of waiting forgrades have taken a back

seat to the quick, but not always painless

scantron type. CUff Notes are now available

to assist in grasping ideas and doing book

reports for Uterature classes. Channel One

is now broadcast to every classroom daily.

Mandatory computer classes have replaced

the once popular cooking, sewing, and

woodworking courses. However, your

parents probably have an edge on you in

geography and spelling. Whatever the

differences, the teachers are workmg to

bring students the best possible training and

education to prepare them for the world

that lay outside Southgate's doors.

^TLOUR" CHILDRENMany juniors were introduced to the world of being a parent this year

in Mrs. Curran's parenting class. For two weeks the halls were filled

with students carrying around their five pound bundles of flour which

served as their babies. Many student parents dressed their babies up,

carried along diaper bags, and even namedthem. Lugging these "flour

children" around really gave them a perspective of the responsibility

of caring for a real child. The aching backs and sore arms were proof

of this. Students were particularly impressed with the fact that being

a parent is really a full time job. Ifthe parents wcrebusyorcallcdaway,

they had to make sure that their

child was well taken care of by a

responsible baby sitter. Even with

all precautions taken, there was al-

ways the threat of "sacknapping".

FACING THE CHALLENGETypically, junior year is the most academically challenging of

one's high school career. This is because a majority of the juniors

elect to take Chemistry, Algebra II or prc-Calculus, plus the re-

quired English classes with their heavy reading lists and research

papers. Don't forget that the all-important ACT Test must betaken

by those who are planning to enter college. The results of this onetest may very well decide the course of one's future! The juniors

face many decisions and demands while awaiting their senior

year.

All of this extra pressure can

be overwhelming for some

students, and cause rather

drastic measures to be taken

to cope with it all. Just ask

Rob Longton, who recruited

his stuffed animal to protect

him from these pressures.

Although Rob needs this se-

curity to see him through to

his senior year, there are srill

other juniors, like Joe Jones,

who manage to stay cool and

calm through it all.

DINING IN

Because most sophomores can't

drive until the spring, they spend a

lot of time eating in the school caf-

eteria;. The menu at school tries to

please the tastes of teenagers, offer-

ing pizza, nachos, tacos and chicken

patties. Although the food is good

most days, talking and socializing

with your friends is the best part of

eating in the cafeteria. A table of

sophomores wind down after lunch

before heading off to fifth hour class.

SOPHOMORICA sophomore is a learned person and one who studies.

The Class of94 found the truth in this title this year. An

English class is required each semester, along with math

and science. Language classes are popular and hopefully

there is room in the schedule for an elective like art,

BAND CAMP ROOKIESBand camp hcilds some of the strongest

traditii>ns at AHS. One of tlie traditions

that always holds true is freshman initia-

tion. During the week at camp, the seniors

treat the freshmen as slaves. The poor

unsuspecting ninth graders must bow to

the orders of the "all superior" senior band

members. Failure to do whatever the

seniors request of them results in very

serious consequences. Those ninth

graders who were especially uncoopera-

tive are "executed" at the end of the week

These "executions" are carried out in a

variety of manners, none of which arc

very pretty.

will be the first class in many years to have a closedlunch for four years. Unhappy about the loss of this privelage,

freshmen complain that the change will cause confusion. They

that different lunch times and class schedules will make it difficult

them to attend club meetings. However, the administration has

that this hassle is necessary to cut down on the number of

and truancies. Whether this new rule will prove beneficial or

the students at Anderson can expect to endure many more school

next year.

Southgate a respected and feared

football team reached its pinnacle

Boys Varstiy Swim Team had its

best season ever! Our Wrestling,

Golf, and Hockey TeamsJdominated the league ancUS

captured the championships.

Wrestling even sent two of its

finest athletes to States. The

Cheerleaders also brought

Anderson recognition as they

placed" in all their competitions.

Meanwhile, the other teams

worked hard for rewarding

seasons. They have started to

ACC-League. H'ith the talent possessed by

these fine athletes, it's no wonder that they

ton. This tie gained them the title of co-

SOUTHGATE SUPPORTS ITS TEAMSThrough the seasons,

we've seen many wins and losses,

but the fans have stuck by the

teams throughout it all. They

were there to cheer on the athletes

when they celebrated in victory

and to support them when the

scoreboards didn't favor them.

Even though the crowd didn't re-

ceivemuch of the glory, they were

definitely there to give it. For that,

the athletes owe much gratitude

to their dedicated and loyal fans.

ANDERSONSWIMMINGThe Southgate Anderson Boys Swim-

ming team dove head first into a season of

glory. The team had a record of 7-6 overall

and a league record of 3-4. The athletes

continued to drown the opposing team in

the Taylor Invitiational, earning them a sec-

ond-place trophy. The enthusiasic team was

a prime example of dedication and determi-

nation.

The captains were Kirk Cumbo and

Kevan Swiney. The boys were coached by

Mr. Fleming, Jerri Bradley, and Ms. Dickenson.

The MVP award went to Kirk Cumbo and

Chris Bemis earned the most improvedaward.

Jason Kupser was honored as league champ

for diving. Overall, the season produced a

fine balance between a fantastic coaching

staff and an enthusiastic team.

girls began volleyball not know-

ing quite what to expect. How-

ever, as the season progressed,

they not only caught on, but also

It UpThis year's JV Volleyball

team had a good season. They

finished with nine wins in league

games. The captains, Kristina

Tkacz and Michelle Herrick, led

the team in their efforts. The girls

gave their coach. Shannon Wynn

all that she could ask for by giving

100% at all times. That talent and

good coaching paid off in the

games. We look forward to seeing

them back next year to continuetheir success in the sport.

Cheers Lead

The CrowdThe Freshman Cheerleaders helped the

crowd get fired up at all of the football and

basketball games this year by leading them

in chants and getting them to yell for the

Titans. They supported their teams as well

as improved their own routines. The ninth

graders gained a lot of valuable experience

along with the enjoyment of being able to

march in theHomecoming parade, cheer in

school assemblies, and compete at

cheerleadingcompetitions.

Beyond The

The Varsity

Cheerleaders put in a lot of

hard work throughout the

season. Besides the cheers

seem by the crowd at games,

the cheerleaders were busy

making signs, organizing the

bonfire, and planning several

assemblies. Cheerleading,

finally being recognized as a

sport, demanded that the girls

put in long hours of practice

during the summer and often

in early Saturday morning

practices. However, that

practice paid off as the team

placed highly in each

competition they entered.

Overall,cheerleadinghasbeen

a verypositive experience that

drew the girls closer together

as both athletes and friends.

ANDERSON TAKES

ON A NEW LOOKThe facility committee of Southgate school district

was established in 1988. The committee was made up of

people in the community from all walks of life. It was

directed to come up with a plan to update current facilities

and suggest needed areas at the high school.

Due to the sale of Schaefer, they had to upgrade the

football field atAnderson. This involved resodding, putting

in new bleachers, fixing the track, and building a new locker

room and workout area. In addition to the outside, a new

multi-purpose gym was added on to the high school.

A MAKEOVERIn the spring of 1991, several

students took on the large job of creating

a focal point in the courtyard for all the

students and staff toenjoy. BillPalazollo

and Amanda Herrick came up with the

wonderful idea of creating a pond by

using a blueprint to accomplish the task.

receiving support from the administration, the actual construction of the pond began over spring break.

Bill Palazollo oversaw the pond's construction with much assistance from Dave Russell, Amanda

and Julie Palazollo. After wheelbarrows of dirt were transported from the courtyard. The liner, pump,

stone for the wall and waterfall were assembled. Once the main work was completed, flowers were

and a park bench was added so students could enjoy this quiet little spot during lunch.

There have been many others who have contributed to the pond since the project began. The janitors

been very supportive, helping everyone in one way or another. Mr. Skura even donated two turtles!
