Iwacs aron't BotalNacsRecently, a Vancouver business mag-

I I azine ran an opinion piece question-i ng the l o ng-run v iability o fMacintoshes. The writer's thesis wasthat the Macintosh line of computersis a sinking ship and that users would

If,.,;,'::": jump on the Windows Argonaut. Hebe better to abandon it now and

used the analogy of the failure of the

market. Because at The CorrsprsterPaper we use Macintoshes extensivelythroughout our business, I foundmyself getting hooked by this argu-ment. I both strongly agree and dis-agree with the writer.

Why i disagrooIt is always risky to compare differentmarkets and say because somethinghappened this way in one market, itis hkely to happen the same way inanother. This fails to recognizeunderlying structural differences and

    kets and how they perform.

The writer's thesis was that a "bet-ter format" Betamax lost in the battle. What may have happened wasthat the formats were not significantly different and the one with themost movie titles won. Is there a significant difference betweenMacintoshes and Windows/MS-DOS computers'

Woaltnossos with WindowsIn a professional business environment, the last thing you want to bedoing is wasting time installing and maintaining computers. TheMacintosh can often pay for the additional upfront cost by being pri-marily user-maintained. Computer consultants can be a much largercost than expensive computers that work right. Apple has finallywoken up to this area and is promoting it in a new ad campaign tar-geted at Windows called, 'This is making it easier?".

Most computer users who have worked on both platforms willagree that a Macintosh works better than Windows. The questionremains how much more this is worth.

Why I agrooIndustry experts tell us that Apple will sell over a million and a halfMacintoshes this year. But these same experts bring up the issue ofApple's long-run viability.

"According to 1DC's report, Appk has o twoyear window of opportunityin 1992 ssnd 1999. Its growth phsn ealk for strong high-end systerrs penetrrs-tion into corporate rseeossnts, inererssing rsrsrhet share lssrgely throssgh massrsrsrheting of lmuond rsrsehines, intermationrsl erspansion, and rs profstrsbk eo-deoekprrsent rrestrsre with IBM.

If Appk fails to aeeornplish rst krsst soow of these gords, 1DC warmed, iteorsld shore thefate of rrsidrange eorrsprster rrendors ssseh os Wang and PrsrneCorspsster... " (Newsbytes)

There are something in excess of 5 million Madntosh computersin use plus the million and a half that Apple expects to sell thisyear hardly a failing market, but when compared with the numberof PC compatibles to be sold, it is a smaller piece of a larger pie.

Apple recently launched an advertising campaign, in conjunctionwith Motorola, featuring a chart of speed tests run by Ingram Labs inthe U.S. comparing highwnd Macintosh Quadras to IBM, Compaqand Everex 486-50 MHz computers running Windows. Lo anc(behold, the Mac wins. So you' ve decided to set up an office at home. BY GEOF WHEELWRIGHT

that you could probably buy three 48650 MHz dones for the sameprice as one MacQuadra.

This was brought home for me recently when I visited a friendwho had purchased a SS MHz 486 for under $2,000 complete with100 MB hard disk and color VGA monitor. It just screams along, com-parable in most uses to aQmdra 700, or at least a Mac IHx. To buy acomparable Mac would cost $4 times as much.

This price differential is to some extent made up by using muchcheaperequality components in the lowland clones, but these dayswith vendors like IBM, Compaq and Dell bringing out low pricedproducts and reasonable quality components, Apple's pricing stillstands out as too high.

Apple has done a good job of bringing prices in line on their low-end machines, but no one wants to buy a slow computer or a limitedcomputer. I believe that what they need to do today to stay competi-tive is bring out a range of $2,00048,000 6804$4evel machines withlots of slots (no LC IV's, please bring back the Mac II box). I stillbelieve it is a viable platform, but the prices have to keep falling inline with PC compatibles. I don't think most people will quibble witha $50041,000 premium, but a 800% premium is too high. Apple, areyou listening?

Voice Ilail Heaven .Not HellWith refc, rence to the article by DanaBlankenhorn published in the July 1992issue of The Computer Paper, I would like toclear up a few misconceptions regarding"Voice Mail Hell."

Voice mail is efficient and surely cannotbe blamed for not returning phone calls. Ifthe owner of the voice mail box chooses notto return her call, it cannot be blamed onthe "ineffident" Voice Mail system.

Yes, the telephone system is your compa-ny's &out door, but if you are held hostageby the operator because the system is busyand put en hold for endless periods, it canhardly be a recommendation. Voice mailcan efficiently handle the fiow of telephonetraffic and refer the callers to a desiredextension. If that extension is busy a voicemail system is able to ask the caller if theywish to hold, or leave a message, or re-routethe call to the next available person.

The article was ill chosen and badlyresearched, and as a consultant spedalizingin voice mail in your paper, I am somewhatdisappointed to see such articles appear.Dana should keep in mind, if your messagesare still not being answered, it's obviousthey don't want your business.

I didn't get past your editorial thisround as your topic is one that is of greatinterest to me and upon reading it Ibecame thoroughly sidetrackedl As a userof a variety of online information systems Iwas pleased to see your promotion of aCanada-wide, affordable data communica-tion network In reference to the subject of"popular," open access to online systems, Iam enclosing an article from theJuly 1992issue of Online magazine that I think youmight find interesting. The NREN referredto in the artide is an acronym for "NationalResearch and Education Network"

Regarding "Canada Remote Systems"-when I read that it was only available as alocal call from Toronto a little bell went offin the back of my mind. I seemed to recallthat INET 2000 (Telecom Canada's nation-al network service) provided a dialaut fea-ture whereby PCs and bulletin boards inother dties can be accessed. Sure enough, aquick on-line check and there it was,

Just to ensure that it worked I locatedthe number for Canada Remote (798-7750or 798-7781) and tried it. After a few busysignals I was put through and signed intoCanada Remote Systems as a new user. I wasgiven 20-odd minutes of free time to

Accounting Scamyour editorial about NewViews. I' ve metPhil Quackenbush and am certainly familiarwith the product f'rom my Bedford days,

We used to get 'The Cheque Question"a lot, too. Even though Bedford may havebeen tighter in places than NewViews, it waspossible to print an unposted cheque. Thequestion really is, "Will this software keepmy people from stealing?" Of course it

used was, "lock up your cheques in yoursafe when you leave, the same way yousecure other valuable papers." Another was,"sure this can be done, but you can do itwith a manual bookkeeping system, too."

    Congratulations on your expandingpaper.

According toAndre Turgeon, chief operating officer forExperComp, the rationale behind this is toget away from the public perception thatIBM-branded products are more expensive. He claims that many people will not evenlook at a PS/I because they assume theprice is too high.

ExperComp is leveraging off a similarexperiment by IBM in England and pur-chasing the ready-to-run Ambra line ofcomputers from them. The new computerline, expected to begin shipping in August, will include; the Sprinta Series, a 25 MHz586SX, with a 40 or 80 MB hard drive, 4megabytes of RAM, 3 expansion slots, choice of VGA or SVGA, ISA bus and a oneyear warranty for about $1600; the HurdlaSeries is a similar configuration to theSprints, except for a 16K Cache to improveprocessor performance, as well as 80 or 160megabyte hard drives; the Treka Series is a

processor and 40 or 80 MB hard drives. The company's goal is to claim 5% of

the Canadian market for IBM~ompatibles, which according to their research will beon the order of 1 million new computersthis year. They also estimate that there areover 200 "assemblers" selling IBMwompati-

them amounting to more than 1% of thismarket. Their plan is to achieve this marketshare with a national scale advertising cam-paign and through national distributorsMerisel Canada and Hartco Enter'prises.According to Turgeon, ExperCom itself, although well financed by IBM, is startingsmall with only five employees and operat-ing out of an IBM warehouse in Markham.

IBM's U.S. parent company is appar-ently watching the Canadian market with

nyone thinking about setting upan online Bulletin Board System(BBS) for their business, specialinterest or commercial service,

would do well to peruse this book It coversmost of the territory well. It is a good readand offers useful suggestions.

The authorsprofile these systems and interviewed theSysops (System Operators) who gave feed-back on their biggest hurdles and currentobsessions. This part was fascinating.

Swnmury: This is a book aboul all facets of thetechnical support pictursr. how to setit up, keep lt nlnnfng, and get themost out of it when you have to useit. Highly recommended for thoseneecgng to operate a technical support crganfxaaan. Not so importniItfor those who unll simply use techet+xL

f there is one subject that most com-puter users caa agree on, it is the uni-versal irritation, and dislike of, havingto use the technical support offered by

software companies. It seems like a nogginsituation you call a number and thh dis-embodied voice seems to either mock yourignorance or cannot help with your prob-lem and sends you to other companies, phone numbers, and just plain outerspace. This fa all assuming that you get tothe voice in the first place. Ask any com-puter user and you will be regaled withtales of hours spent oa hold, eadleas ses-sions with voice mail systems, and the worstsin of all having someone answer thephone {fmally) only to take your name andnumber and promise to have someone callyou back Right.

The interesting thing is that most com-

    wish to enter that field.

panies are aware of that dreadful imageand are really trying to work on it~t leastthose companiea that wish to remain in thecomputer buaiaeas do. Ralph Wilson'sbook is actually intended for those peoplewho are settiag up or running a tech sup-port group, but I found it instructive read-ing nonetheless.

The book's 227 pages are divided intoseven chapters that altogether demystifywhat is going on at the other side of thatphone line. Wilson talks about what ittakes to motivate tech support people. Hegives examples of what works and whatdoes not. He issues recommendations oawhat to do and how to train your tech sup-port people so that you get the most fromthem. And all of this advice is backed up bythe fact that Wilson runs his own companythat ia purely dedicated to providing techsupport services to companies that do not

The seven chapters are t i t l ed:Manufacturer Support, Internal Support,Communicadon Skills, Handling SupportCalls, Information Techniiptes and Tools,Alternative Methods of Support, and AUser's Guide to Technical Support. As youam aee, the author covers the field pretty

He initially breaks the support taskdown to two main activities: internal andexternaL External is that tech support linethat we are all fhaahar with. Internal is thetech support that some of the bigger com-panies can offer by having some of theirpersonnel dedicated to supporting userswithin the organization on programs thatthe company has purchased from'outside.

Wihon draws on the similarities of thetwo types of support in the first two chap-
