INTRODUCTION

The data on the enclosed diskette complement a map by Wilson and LaRock (in press), which shows mineralized areas and the principal lode mines in southern Summit County, Colorado. The data were initially collected and compiled during a study by the U.S. Geological Survey of the mineral resource potential of the White River National Forest and Dillon Ranger District of the Arapaho National Forest. The information updates the Mineral Resources Data System (MRDS) (USGS, 1990) and provides a base for future studies of the ore deposits in Summit County.

There are four ASCII files on the enclosed 360K floppy diskette: OPENFILE.DOC, 295A.ASC, SYN-COM.ASC, and ALATLONG.ASC. OPENFILE.DOC is a copy of this text for documentation. 295A.ASC (Table 1) is a database arranged alphabetically by mine name, that lists the mineralized area, 7-1/2 minute topographic quadrangle, and various references for the 295 principal mines in southern Summit County (Wilson and LaRock, in press). SYN-COM.ASC (Table 2) is a file containing synonyms and comments for selected mines. ALATLONG.ASC (Table 3) contains the latitude and longitude location for each mine, sorted alphabetically by mine name. Some mines have several openings and therefore have more than one entry in ALATLONG.ASC.

A paper copy of the files is provided for the users' convenience (Tables 1-3). The text is printed in WordPerfect 5.1 (WordPerfect Corporation, 1990), the three data files are produced from Paradox 3.5 (Borland International, 1990).

METHODOLOGY

The authors painstakingly located each mine on current 1:24,000 topographic maps using geologic and geographic descriptions in published literature. Only named locations that could be verified in published literature were plotted, but a single mine may contain multiple named adits and/or shafts. No attempt has been made to show which mine workings are currently accessible and which are not. Mines were omitted if the only location information available was extremely poor. This applied to a few entries listed in MRDS (U.S. Geological Survey, 1990) and to several small mines that are mentioned in published literature but were not plotted on accompanying maps. Numerous undocumented mines and prospects exist throughout the county that are not included.

The mines were plotted on 7-1 /2 minute topographic quadrangle maps printed on stable bases. Using the mapping program GSMAP, version 7.0 (Seiner and Taylor, 1991), each map was digitized individually and then merged into a master database. The data were plotted at 1:50,000 scale (Wilson and LaRock, in press) to match the scale and projection used by the County Map Series (U.S.Geological Survey, 1976).

MINERALIZED AREAS

Each mine has been assigned to one of the following mineralized areas in Summit County: North Rock Creek, Peru Creek, Montezuma, Keystone, Swandyke, Breckenridge, Blue River, East Blue River, Monte Cristo, and Kokomo-Tenmile (Wilson

and LaRock, in press). The mineralized areas were defined by topography, access, and geology and may include or subdivide historical mining districts. Known ore deposits and mineralized areas are described in reports by Brown (1990a,b). The mineral resource potential is currently (1991) being evaluated by the USGS as part of the White River National Forest and Dillon Ranger District of the Arapaho National Forest mineral resource assessment.

TABLES

The following headings are found in the Tables:

Mine: the common mine name. If the name most commonly used in the literature is notthe same as that printed on the topographic quadrangle map, then the literature nameis given in parentheses (it will also be included as a synonym in the SYN-COM.ASC file(Table 2)). Also in parentheses are descriptors that are not part of the official name, suchas lower tunnel, shaft, etc. Mine names throughout the county are not always unique. If a mine name duplicates another mine name elsewhere in the county, the mineralizedarea is given in brackets.No.: the number used by Wilson and LaRock (in press) to identify the mine. Mines arenumbered consecutively within each mineralized area by quadrangle.Area: the mineralized area as defined by Wilson and LaRock (in press).Quadrangle: the 7-1/2 minute topographic map on which the mine is located.References: listed in order of usefulness and apparent accuracy in locating the mine.Letters correspond to the lettered reference list. If the location based on the literaturesearch matched that of a mine symbol on the topographic map, then the map wasincluded as a reference.MRDS No. 1. 2. & 3: entry numbers in the U.S. Geological Survey's MRDS database. Some mines were entered multiple times in MRDS.USBM: a "Y" indicates that the mine is discussed individually and an "I" indicates that themine is included with other mines in Brown (1990b).Synonyms: alternate mine names. Whenever possible, the original mine name is listed, but many of the mines have since been consolidated into larger conglomerates. Forexample, the Breene, Colonal Sellers, Connors, Free America, Michigan, Quail, SnowbankGroup, and the Wilfley are now part of the Wilfley-Kimberly mine (USGS, 1990).Comments: pertinent information that doesn't fit any of the other categories. Letters referto the References field described above.Type: adit (A); shaft (S); prospect, or unknown (X).North Latitude

Degrees: degrees of north latitude.Minutes: minutes of north latitude.Seconds: seconds of north latitude (4 decimal places in ALATLONG.ASC).

West LongitudeDegrees: degrees of west longitude.Minutes: minutes of west longitude.Seconds: seconds of west longitude (4 decimal places in ALATLONG.ASC).
